  1. there is this server out of the box, install, called CWS its based on apache php perl ftp mail and mysql postgresql and some other stuf like that, it also includes a hosting control panel called WEB-CP its free, and aesy to install neads 9gb of diskspace and 256ram www.completewebserver.nl (build in english as far as i know by a dutch guy)
  2. you said new login screen? have you ever tried, the logon stuf from windows neptune... (2k home beta)
  3. btw. G from around next week or so i got myself a (powerhouse) > (dualcore 1,8ghz cpu) with 2gb of ram... so if for any reason you nead any cpu-time for building it or compressing it.. just ask...
  4. no it couldn't - it just changes the looks. if you want xp to get stable wait for sp3 or VISA (without the 3D interface though).
  5. Note! this file is hosted on rapidshare, but you'd better get the file from, The official Firefox webstie post edited for relevantie
  6. probably stupid to ask but, firefox 2 wil prably be released this year. and v3 next or the year after that.... looking at the computer timespan, why even concider gooing to that mutch truble for an OS that will hardly be able to run on a stock computer. as i looked at the manual of my 939 mobo it does no longer support windows 9x me divers. just win2k and XP (and linux on the website). and this a mobo at the age (time since intro), of 1 and a half year... would mean that youd like to build an os that doesn't run on any (new) computers since the last 2 years... an avarage computer lives 5 this win vesion would than be more than twice a old as a computer should be living ... but ofcaurse its always fun to try because you can... even though i believe that if one would like to work in c+ (or something alike) creating Win api's id would be of far greater use if contributed to WINE (for OpenSource Software).
  7. doesnt work that way... even though it could it would make more trouble for end users. for example, if we would have packs a b and c and pack a and c need file editiong of file x but b nead a complete update of file x than wicht of those packs should we change file x first, and what happends when the end user doesn't install a b and c in Our Prefered (and calulated) order. this is probebly the biggest problem with creating windows service packs... and recomanded thing to do is as a friend to download it on broadband and burn you a cdrom with it... btw most drivers and patches are OS-specific, though most aplications work on both 2 and XP drivers and sucht wil not, as the base code and kernel has taken quite a lot of change. and a rumour goes, in SP3 comming Q4 of this year (or so it should). thing regarding drivers wil change in full,
  8. S939 is NOT dead... absolutely NOT, A because, there will stil be the opterons for s939 (no the won't be build for M2 (at least amd says so). B because, there is a huge market for them, C because it takes about 1.5 to 2 years before end of stock... i realy think amd will think twice befor completely killing s393 (opterons) because its making them quit a lot of market share on highend desktop / and lowend server markets...
  9. Admin / Power user = full or partion admin you nead to make them user or guest user... download restrictions are found in IE-policies (but i have no server running to look voor exact key).
  10. OC-ing a Althlon 64 (?) in that case try to buy ureself an opteron 1xx and 939 mobo its not that mutch more expensive but clocks a hell of a lot better... Im going to order a 165 x2 series (dualcore 1.8ghz), myself sometime next month.. but a 146 (x1) easily clocks over 2.6 ... (with some supper colling fan... there are those that blow over the top (sideways) instead of right on top (downways) .....
  11. also by the way.... why buying watercooling, its a myth, as since long (AMD Socket A) interl P4 a lot of manufacturers have made AIRFlow-coolers, that are in 90% of all test-cases more efficient than a wattercooler, and for prices, air cooling costs about, CPU ( E 30.- ($40)) for performance) GPU ( E 10,- ($12,50)) CASE (E 15,- ($20,00)) total: 55 ( $72,50), water colling over a 125 euro's ( $150+) also aircolling costs less engergy (as a hydropomp takes more watts that a few fans). BTW: when using thermal past, PLEASE dont use to mutch, its not cement on a cracked wall, but raiter the morter betweek the bricks... so make it as thin as you can, for best result... BTW watch out if you have thick vingers, (i always use a cottonswap (btw did take me 15mins to translate this word from dutch (NL) LOL), good luck...
  12. ill start right on theme this weekend - thank god my isp has changed bandwith limits for me from 10 to 24gb per month, (helpfull for these tasks)...
  13. i don't think a byte pacher will do the trick.... because its often far from acurate. a dif file though COULD perhaps help A litle bit though i think the work wouldn't be worth the few extra megs saved... @gurgle, someone has picked up a nice project to create a 2k-ize patcher for win2k... screenshots look promising... another thing involes that BTS-driver packs now supports creating a fully-slipstreamd driver-base... (drivers.cab dosnet.inf etc), so my question for you is, witch types of drivers do you prefer build in windows and witch you want out (for now) i myself would thing that, it would be best to start with basics, Chipset, VGA Sound LAN PCMCIA and SATA ... and fully removing printer + scanner drivers... do you agrea?
  14. *driverset update (including driver.cab + dosnet.inf etc), is there any reason to suspect that it would also work on windows 2000 (provided that i or someone else would collect these drivers).
  15. prob with that though is that ist WAY slower for extraction than running from cd-itself, if you realy want a quick install, build a ghost image (install your software, use sysprep to deletele user config (and the HAL), and put the ghost image on a hidden partition, than make a floppy boot with ghost to load that particular image.... et voila (and even if you, change hardware, no-problemo (because while deleting HAL - you also should have deleted drivers, (this will make setup ask for local & regional settings a LIC-key, and will finalise setup (with installing drivers)...
  16. got my intrest for sure, BUT A: is it performing, / stable B: is it fully based on freeware or opensource (without anny addware of nasty stuf like that. C: (will probebly pop to mind later) id personaly prefer default windows .theme files, that can be enabled quite easily
  17. 1: so do not remove mdac component with nLite, 2: and in the advanced mode of removal put all of the following files in the "KEEP these files" box... > MSHTA.EXE, > JSCRIPT.DLL, > MSHTML.DLL, > MSHTML.TLB > SP3RES.DLL
  18. true, but some software checks wga (wasn't sure wmp10 did it to), at least no i found that Windows PLUS Digital media doesn't install without wga.. (checks by installer), and im anicipationg other software will do so to.. its not imposible to use windows update to enable wga (but surely undesierable), For example because i dont like AV-software slowing down a HTPC, thats why i asked. (or did i actualy overlook some sort of - offline checker).
  19. try low-level formating the disk ... most hdisk manufactors have a tools disk for such operations... Search @ Google = low level format <insert hddrive name here>
  20. is there a torrent ??? or shall i seed one ??? on some (thats meand i havent chosen one yet), torrent site....
  21. PRE NOTE- this is NOT about warez.. is it posible to create a cdrom, that auto enabled WGA. for people who have (no or not yet) setup internet conections... (stand alone computers), that want to run for example WMP10 or other wga-required software.... al this without using hacks cracks or other warez ofcaurce ... (as i dont think ms would allow this (even if it was on a legit copy of windows). Note this is NOT about warez but about computers (in my case MCE) that i do NOT want to connect to the internet for activation, previously it could be done by phone-activation, now it only seams do-able with WU please advice....
  22. my best AV solucion is still running linux in non-privileged mode, but as id say, a few moths a go i say this comparison test on a mayer dutch techsite witch still state - kasparske nod32 (and 1 or 2 other) as quickest respondends on nieuw virus threads, and in my opinion that IS the most important thing, (not how many bugs are in software) but how quickly it is resolved after discovery ... some techguy at microsoft once state that per 1.000 lines of code you get 10 coding-mistakes in normal software, 5 on critical software (like firewalls and antivirus, and mision critical corporate software, and aprox 3 in an Operating system.. this doesn't mean all are exploitable but are faults non the less... so lets not only talk about how good it looks, or howmany features it has, or how few resources it needs, but also about how quick it responds to new threats, (with updates).
  23. i ment like the UI ... (how id love to see 7zip with cristal icon set (as has mozilla firefox... )
  24. in that case why not create an entire new installer... i dont think there is a lot to it... but my proposal is lest also look at the Gui (cauze that to look a bit sh*tty).
  25. here i ask myself, currently AMD has its Opteron clocked at 2.4 ghz. (i know that people have managed it a 3.5ghz) its a perfect 64bit chip with good bus speads and 1mb L2cash per core (it has 2), its running from a 933 (realy ell-cheapo (but true-power) mother board, so why didn't i see it come bye in this thread... by the way, most revieuws are quite positive about conrou, but i WILL cost WAY to mutch. and to those who though the 65nm AMD will rock the house, - the wont, its exact copy of the curring cpu (but smaller, and uses a little less power), the one chip that would maybe put its wage in tha scale for AMD probebly is based on the AM2 socket ... dont get my wrong at this point i prefer amd WAY over Intel, but the conrou is a real pain for amd to beat.... btw so is the intel Celeron M 420, (for its price range of +/- $125 that is).
