    New IE Removal Fileset

Q (for FDV), has anyone ever looked for a way to change a regkey or someting to replace the QL directory from: '%program files%\Internet Explorer\Quicklaunch' to '%userprofile%\QwuickLaunch'
  2. based on your great work (but with Minor editing (hope you dont mind), same logo, with diferent text and text-color //edit by what, the blue logo is briliant, tnx a mln, but could you please redo the txt on the uSP5 logo to look mor like. Microsoft® Windows 2000™ unofficial Service Pack 5 note the 3 lines. - (instead of 2) and maybe a fade (from white to grey or other way around) - lots of thanks already -
  3. why even bothering, - have a look at VNC (there are lots of clients and services for it also many free (or opensource), just run it as service (windows service) and your of for a good start

    HALT fix for Win2k?

just add it, - Gurglemeyer added it in uSP.5 (lateest build) and it works fine on both OEMs HT's and non-HTs only proc im not aware of is 'Ax64* (in 32bit ht-mode)', (* Amd x64 (athlon 64), has some series that let windows think its bit 33 to 64 are actualy a Hyperthreaded vcore).
  5. yes it is, - if you can supply ALL patches - /G has used, problem is lots and lots of them arn't public - and mainstream support has ended, (so if you want them, buy them). another option would be to - make a 'as mutch as you can get your hands on' version, its all up to you, (i know if tryed a dutch version, and maybe ill even retry (but chances are slim, and time isn't cheap)), thats why ive chosen to rather just stick with the enlish version (and made a point to al the who ask me about it, (if you cant use windows 2k in enlish - use xp). its hash but very real (imho)
  6. *smilles* - great, But im not going to download the same version twice, so you might want to tell me what 'last minute fixes' you made, tnx.
  7. 90hourst straigh and even managed to sync an AD (of just over 50megg) i know it isn't 20gb like it should have but i dont realy have sucht a large testing machine to build 20gb of shares on a signle volume nor do i have time to create one, by the way G i didn't even notice support tools hade probs - at least not on my system but i didn't take any time to trash them after you told me about it.. anways. - i havn't realy found any probs that i'd call critical ore dangerous, - and since i didn't encounter any major probs i dont see why it isn't ready for early adoption - BUT: i dont recomend it for production yet, (like i said before, the best way to realy test it is to realy run it...in realy would enviroments . but thats still doesn't mean its enterprice ready... greatz..
  8. oke here are some requests, A> Microsoft - windows 2000 - unofficial Service Pack 5. in 640 x 480 (to make a bootscreen, out of this, and B: on with the winlogo a bit blue gray-ish, and a musical note in it. also for windows 2000 (its for a media center -like version im planning on based on a opensource project called mediaportal.sourceforge.net). by the way.. you'd bet better edit your post and tumbnail the image and link to the real one. read posting rulez....
  9. A: i realy dont thinkt hfslip and uSP5 wil be happy to see eachother lol B: yeah you should use modifype after hacking or changing files.... just create your cd.. and just before burning it to cdrom replace all files that you want to modify with modifype'd versions of the hacked files...
  10. there isn't realy any - though - if you realy want it, there might be a way to uses windows NT4's version (which doesn't have Active Desktop yet), or you could use ROSexplorer (which isn't realy that stable), but both arn't realy an option, (not in my point of vieuw anyway).....
  11. yes, AD is required, at least, > 1 NTFS v5 partion (on the ad-server, (preferably on a diferend harddisk than the os is on) (!tip:) > 1 master DNS server, > 1 primairy domain controler, and optionaly > DHCP service > WinS service // note that windows 2k on sufficient hardware is realy quit capabel of running all those services on a single machine, - but its usually recomanded to have a 2nd server as a replicator in case your pri- server brakes down... (!tip:) personaly i always recommend a disksetup like. > 7200rpm 10gb harddrive (master: IDE-0) for %winddir%, > cdrom drive (master IDE-1) for installation > any kind of tapestreamer (on Slave IDE-0) for backup > 3x 20gb 7200rpm IDE-raid 5 aray (formated as NTFS v5) - you nead at least 3disk for raid 5
  12. webserver doesn't either. to explain a bit more, on web edtion this only aplies to remote conections with (ms remote desktop) and the <shared folders> IIS or windows versions of apache seam to work just fine, also things like IRC of Bittorrent seaders can have more than just 10 conections, - at least i never encountered any problems at all..
  13. Your computer sience Prof. is realy an interesting guy but, lest face it he is probebly in his mids 40s and at the time he was introduced to *nix systems, the only stable kernels where run from an UltraSparq I mainframe, now a days, id be glad to cmpeate whith him running a series of test, like performing a siries of test in office tasks setting up networking creating and editiong audio video pictures - and stuf like that, and in the mean time checking the system usage. in proof: linux can be just as easy managable as windows, but has way more configuabillity. for example there is this zenwalk linux, wich actualy responds about 10% quicker than windows 2000, on a celeron 1.7ghz laptop with SIS 640 chipset and 20gh 4500rpm harddisk and 256 SD100 ram but certainly my choice for older hardware.
  14. will i actualy work on 2000 - ow my dear god - how stange, sinse mainstream support has already ended LOL - and true it wont run on 9x windows, since it isn't an update to DX9 or older but its nearly a complete rebuilde, based on avalon subsystem, that is also why i can hardly believe that it would actualy work on 2000, since xp will have avalon(-like) suport from SP3 and up. sorry cant find the tech artical where i wread about it right now,
  15. posted on the wrong, forum - also there have been so many discussions about this allready and noone realy wil be able to deside for you... but than again, a 'simple search on this forum would maybe help you to read about some previous topics on this matter, so have fun reading and searching this board, you are nr. 10.987.654.321st user to ask this very same question... but as posted before, so many times. best operating system, > windows 2000 > windows xp (home) or (proffesional) best antivirus . > Macaffee > Nod32 > Panda AV (personal) !! > On windows 2000 always use Mozilla Firefox or Opera (as your webbroser), on xp you can (if you realy want) also just use IE6.sp2 !! > On windows 2000 you also may want to use a firewall, (like kyro personal firewall), xp has a build in firewall, but you may want to replace it, with kyro, (zone allarm is also quite good choice). Note: I'm not going to explain why - im also not going to debate on this, just read about it some more on the forum and start thinking and make your own decision, or ask your local retailer....
  16. Use Web Edition, Since you seem to be a scollar (right?) and you dont seam to be that teachy to actual want a windows domain controler, - Also buying the student license for 2k3 web (instead of standard) wil save you about 50+ dollar - nmX.Memnoch is right about the soundcard though - Lose it, its not a thing you'd want on a server (maybe a small tip is to put it on ebay and trade it for a raid controller card - so youd' be able to add more disks in the future, (promise is a good - and not to expancive brand for raid devices) if you actualy want raid - you probebly want a ATA133 based (raid 0 / raid 1 / or preferably raid 5) enabled device, also keep in mind that youd want to disable as many services as you can...
  17. it is NOT possible, no'r is it legal, I concider myselfe 'semi proffesional' on the windows 2000 operating system. and yes i have tryed and failed, - there where simply to many hooks to the kernel and driver base to get WMP 10 stable enouth on NT5.0 also i feat there are little to no advantages for me to forcefully hack the thing stable. just for that (and for memory footprint), i desided to find my luck with other media software instead. - there are some great opensource aplications, that manage to be working perfectly on Win 2k.
  18. take winzip or what ever, archive-tool you use, open the exe file (as like it was a zip file), extract its conence to a folder exmp; C:\office2003\ now look for the installer, setup.exe (or setup.msi), now create an autorun.inf file [autorun] open = office2003\setup.exe icon = path\to\office.ico and put in in the root of your cdrom, now add the entire office2003 folder to your cdrom 1 final tip though, - Use a Rewritable cdrom, to test this first. (you could also just create the iso (and mound it with vitual drive).
  19. yes but 800mhz is realy not that much for any HTPC (Home Theater pc), for example, especialy not with windows XP. for example my HTPC is an AMD Duron 1.1ghz with 384mb SD pc133 ram, (256 + 128), and it can handle just 1 recording stream and 1 playback on a simple MPG2 format. but am running in on a dedicated linux install, to use it with xp (google told me about - THIS site wich is an opensource replacement for the MCE-component by MicroSoft (so you could run it from the far more afordable "Home" version of Windows XP), but they already talk about 1.4ghz, On a system like yours id even recomand not running xp at al (but look for a used win2k licence), or at least, Nlite-ing the hell out of XP. Goodluck.... though..
  20. Just installed, Active directory service (AD), with just 1 errormessage about Conection Mangager Component, wich says it couldn't be modyfied, - (error message 0x80070006) seams like it was already running at the time it was supposed to be installed, checking the logs, to see when its installed, (probebly with IIS).
  21. update: dec. 17 Installed IIS 5.0, and Windows Media Services, and also no problems supmerged, the default.asp file caused me no problems, and my service conected to a domain controler like a charm, there is 1 minor, flaw in the add/remove software wizzard, but im not sure if it is caused by internet exploeren or by my SIS Driver installer.. it just says (where x normaly should be the name of the program). It should be about the size of my 'vga driver install', and it seams to be not a real bigg problem... (but more like a litle anoyance). Update: - It actualy IS my VGA driver, (just deinstalled it to see what heppens, (dont ever do this on a production server boys n girls) -
  22. Date: Dec. 16 2005: (start testing (windows 2000 server (standard)) Slipstreaming and installing, (using nlite v1 rc3) went well. Dec. 17 2005 (checked windows update) Found 3 'high risk' security updates:Microsoft - Malicious Software Removal Tool (december 2005) This is a normal update, witch microsoft recomends running once a month to check for mallware on your computers, this is NOT to be included in the uSP (it is not a security patch) but you should run this tool, with every new release (once a month). Security update for DirectX-8 and DX-8.1 (2 updates) DirectX comes with most vga drivers, (mine came with version 8), I do not recoment installing this patch, (you should update to directX 9 instead) I Found no update for, MS directory service, or IIS (yet); will install those, and check what WUS will tel me after that.... Please dont screw this topic up with repley's like 'Cewl' or 'When will it be released' you realy should only post in this topic if you have questions or comments on specific things you'd want me to check for, (im testing this on a 'server os', so also please dont asks things like, "wil it work with, my favorite game", (unless its a game server). I wil NOT, answer any questions other than about, the actual testing,
  23. hmmz, - forget what i said earlier, - I For buisnesses like Eolas - not to exist.
  24. To GOOD to be true.... /me Smiles....
  25. did you OEM Brand you install, iff so info on removed components should be in (right click my computer) - the nlite logo should be in the left down corner of the screen, and a buttot 'support information' should lead you to a list of remove components - if not, there's basicly little i can think of that could be the problem, -
