  1. That's a good idea for users who've already created the Rescue Media Boot CD and are picky about having the 100+ MBs installed just to create images. I don't like the idea of having to reboot and boot to CD to do so, especially if I'm doing daily backups, but it's not a bad idea.
  2. I just decided to type up a text file listing and explaining each of the freeware programs I use and include it on a CD/DVD or just send it to them. But WPI looks cool.
  3. There was a huge thread about peoples' favorite software, however I was unable to locate it after several searches. Maybe I overlooked it.
  4. Or you could use software that doesn't install Services. Or you could configure the Services to Manual.
  5. Yeah, I saw that on Half-Life 2.Net a while back. A group of people are doing/did a total conversion of Half-Life 1 called Black Mesa Source. It's been months since I checked on that, though.
  6. Nice find!
  7. Nothing's perfect. The product does work like a charm and for that I am grateful. If the uninstaller isn't clean, you can manually clean things up afterwards. Obviously, you shouldn't have to, but that's life. I find a bit of pride in my ability to manually cleanse my system of traces of uninstalled software. I actually did that yesterday for about 20 minutes. I found reference to around 15 programs that had long since been gone. Of course jv16 PowerTools helped me do all of that, but the fact that it didn't find all those in "Aggressive" scans had me questioning its ability for a moment, but then I remembered once more that nothing is perfect. At least it helped me find the traces after unsuccessfully cleaning them automatically.Anyway, back on topic, I'd say those Common Files are for the BartPE and Rescue Media. After you have that CD burnt off, perhaps you can remove the Common Files or some of them. I might experiment with that sometime.
  8. What do web browsers have to do with a spy tool designed for Yahoo Messenger?
  9. That's just for Yahoo Messenger, though.
  10. No, I uninstalled the K-Lite Codec Pack and installed FFDShow. I don't know how I can make that any clearer.
  11. I prefer backing up to DVD, but thanks.
  12. 7-Zip, Acronis True Image, AnyDVD, AviSynth, CCleaner, ConvertXToDVD, Diskeeper, FFDShow, FileZilla Client & Server, Foxit PDF Reader, HyperSnap-DX, IrfanView, jv16 PowerTools 2006, Media Player Classic, M$ Office, Windows Live Messenger, Nero Lite Micro, NotePad++, OpenOffice (just trying it out), Opera, PeerGuardian2 (trying it out), QT Alternative, Skype, UltraISO, UltraVNC, Universal Extractor, Unlocker, uTorrent, VMWare Workstation, Winamp. This doesn't consist of the programs on my FTP as I don't have them installed myself but use them to do maintenance work on others' PCs.
  13. I just ditched the K-Lite Codec Pack and installed FFDShow.
  14. Use Dial-A-Fix to "Fix Windows Updates" and see if that works. There's lots of information on Google about this as well as MSFN, as it's not the first time someone has asked about this.
  15. No, only if you're one of Gate's slaves. You're using Windows, right? "I must rebel against M$ by not using a Service Pack, I am to be dubbed Sir! Geez, if I had a dime for every one of those..." I installed Windows SP1a on my mother-in-law's PC and the Blaster worm hit me before I had a chance to open IE. Just slipstream the service pack and be done with it.
  16. I just checked the filesize of my Acronis True Image Home Edition 10 and it's 17.3 MB (18,160,502 bytes).
  17. 420 viruses?! What the hell have you been doing? I'd say you'd be better off reformatting and starting from scratch. I think you need to rethink your surfing habits...
  18. Acronis True Image Home Edition 10 for me. 100 MBs, pfft, big deal. It's worth the filesize for the ease of use and convenience of being able to restore without reformatting/reinstalling from scratch if something major goes wrong. Tarun, do you happen to know the difference between True Image 7 and 10?
  19. Don't make such a big deal out of Services, you can set them both to Manual and have full functionality w/ PerfectDisk.
  20. I was wondering when the day this would go final would come. Thanks.

    IE 7

FileZilla Client and Server, both freeware.
  22. While I agree with most of the software choices for anti-spyware, taking 6 hours for one PC is not practical in my opinion. I had to spend 8 hours on a PC a while back and even had to call in to M$ to get the OS activated for my mother-in-law. I decided from that point on to invest some time into some automated methods of installing good software to reduce the hours spent. Most PC shops that get busy need to do things as fast as possible to try and not get swamped by PCs needing fixing. I did my workterm experience in a tech shop and now how busy and slow it can get. I agree that it is frustrating when people don't do as you instruct them. However, if you're giving them RegClean, for example, they are justified in not following such advice. CCleaner and NTRegOpt or RegCompact.Net, Avast, Comodo, Opera, IrfanView/XnView, OpenOffice, Media Player Classic, QT/Real Alternative, maybe a few others I'm not thinking about are all they need. All freeware.
  23. Merry Christmas, All!

    driver update

Uninstall it from Device Manager. Reboot. Install new driver. Reboot.
  25. Can you see your mouse cursor at that distance? That's probably why...
