I'm due to take my A+ and Network+ soon. I'm 21 and a half. @ethanmcf, just some advice: People will want employees with experience over certifications. If your resume is packed with certs then that will land you a good job, but to get higher up than that you'll need some years. Sorry that's quite off-topic.

You don't install a slot. Your mobo either has the AGP slot or it doesn't. If it doesn't, you take an AGP card and insert it into the slot. Very simple.

Always check the 12V lines. You should get yourself a nice Antec 350 or 400W PSU. Artifacts could be power, driver conflict or overheating, or even a low-quality model of a PSU. Some video cards are known to be problematic. How many devices do you have in your PC?

Versions of Windows released prior to Windows 95 did not have a start button.Correction: I've never known any version of Windows prior to 95 to not have the Start button.

Click Start > Run > type in “msconfig” (without quotations). Under General > Selective Start-Up, uncheck "Load StartUp Items". Reboot. Notice a difference? Also, you might want to evaluate your software choices. If you use Norton/Symantec, that is one cause of slow boot-up speed. You may need to defragment your harddrive and as a seperate task, perform a boot-time defrag with either PD8 or DK2007. You do not need extra software to tell you what you can disable from start-up. Windows already contains what you need. There is never anything listed there that if disabled will prevent your system from operating normally.

Why not just download Windows XP and use your Product Key? That's what you pay for anyway; the code, not Windows. Then you can backup your device drivers, integrate SP2 (if necessary) and your drivers (or wait until setup is finished). Do an Unattended install with nLite so you don't have to input anything during setup. Format, install, install software, configure everything, then Ghost/Image. @Andromeda43, we all know you're the guru of techs, no need to praise thy self. Also, the "best" Av and AS software is subjective and debatable.

What Anti-Virus do you Use/Recommend?
Jeremy replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I'm actually considering switching to this from Kaspersky. It has a higher detection rate and the GUI is very nice. The memory usage is fine, two services, responsive and detailed. It was actually fun taking screenshots of it compared to some other products I tried. -
I've heard of a lot of FTP programs but never GuildFTP. Try out FileZilla.

What does a security vulnerability have to do with certain media types not playing back in the browser? What type of media are you trying to view? I use Opera and I can view Flash/Shockwave, QT, RP, WM.

Disable all start-up entries and reboot. Same thing?

I've never known any version of Windows to not have the Start button. Perhaps it was Reshacked out? Which version of Windows is it?

If you have an original XPCD you can use nLite to integrate SP2 and RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update Pack, and all your device drivers if you have backups. This should allow you to repair an existing XP installation.

Looking for a Suitable Windows Tweak or Application/Software
Jeremy replied to kumarkumar's topic in Windows XP
Updating Windows via the Automatic Updates Service will give you the option of specifying which updates you wish to install. I personally prefer to disable WUs entirely and get only the necessary ones from 3rd party locations (or tools). -
Did you remove the Windows Image Acquisition Service?

You need the .IFO and .BUP files to go along with the DVD. I just tried with only a .VOB file in my Nero and received the same warning.

Thank you for pulling out the real message here!!!!I said it before he did. Different wording, but I used bolded and underlined text. Hehehe.

Normally when you convert a DVD to AVI, you remove the region code(s).

What is your favorite Anti-Malware application?
Jeremy replied to Tarun's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
if you're using CCleaner, then why are you using TuneUp Utilities? -
Region codes are only present in DVDs. You can use DVD Shrink or AnyDVD or one of many others to remove region codes. The first two are the best IMHO.

What Anti-Virus do you Use/Recommend?
Jeremy replied to DigeratiPrime's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Not quite. If you use HDD images to restore with, then you can completely rollback to a clean installation as long as you have an image that was taken during a point in time when it was 100% clean. If you don't wear a seatbelt and have a head-on collision going 100 km/h, game over. No rollback. Of course. You can be safe, but another coming in your direction may not be. But it's a little different than a computer virus. This is partially true, but some people simply cannot help it. Elderly folk with some second hand PC using aged hardware just for the sake of browsing the web are:a. Either not know what a virus is. b. Not know what an anti-virus is. c. Realize they need some sort of protection and go with whatever had good marketing. It's sad that people will go with Norton and Symantec, but it happens. They are not inferior, just not the best. Any AV solution can become victim of a smarter virus. No AV is the ultimate dominator, only very good, Nice ideas. I've never known an infection to be possible via streaming audio, the others I've heard about, though. -

What are your system specs? Do you have NIS2007 customized (Services disabled to only allow few functions)? I find that extremely difficult to believe. -
I suggest you use RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update Pack in the future. It's a .7z file that can be integrated into your XP source with either the Integrator available on the same site, or by nLite.

Did you even bother to read the previous posts? I have 2 GBs of Dual Channel PC3200 and had my pagefile set down to 512 MB from 4 GB and running several applications gave me the low virtual memory warning. See my other post in big black letters? Therrree you go.
