  1. If there are large SQL databases, check there size. You may need to split the database down. Also try running a backup and restore of the batabase, we have to do this on our database once a week ... But it does speed it up ... Our database resides on a seperate drive than all the other data. This drive is always defragged - according to Diskeeper and MS Defrag this drive is always badly defragged, but thats just the way SQL works. Hope this has been some help....
  2. There is a lot of setting up and maintenance to a server. However in your case and with your knowledge, buying a ready made server would be your best option. And you dont need to spend £1000 on a server. I have some dell servers, they are good value and they will customise them for you. For an entry level system i would suggest: Dell Poweredge 1800 I have 3 of the 1850 servers which are the 1U rack mounted versions of the 1800. The rack versions are more expensive than the standard tower range, but with all Dell machines, you do get a quality bit of kit ! Dell Servers Hope this is a help!
  3. Agreed.. ME is the worst O/S ever been written... I would rather go back to DOS 5 than install ME ! Tis true that XP is better for games, but if u have 2000, there is nothing wrong with it - i use 2000 for network gaming and find it better than XP... Dunno why, it just seems faster, and the game doesn't "jadder" so much.... Can't wait to play Doom 3 tho... Didn't know it was out !
  4. Your notebook should be able to boot from a cd.. Xp and 2k both support the installation from cd so there shouldn't be a problem. However, you may have to enter the bios and check the boot sequence so you can enable it t boot from the cd rom before the hard drive...
  5. Simply put... No. XP architecture is compleately different.
  6. If your just wanting to run a program from a remote machine just click start, run and type in the share + program name ie "\\pcname\sharename\myprogram.exe that will run it across the network. If it is a program you use regularly then create an icon on the desktop useing the same path... Tis easy !
  7. Hello All.. I'm having some issues with 2x 2k servers. They both have AD installed, but i need to demote one of the servers so i can remove it and reconfigure it. The problem is how do i get the server to replicate manually? since the 2 servers have been in AD they have have various sync problems. So now i need to have only 1 running the AD and the other as a member server. I also need to move the DHCP, the DNS and other settings over, but i dont want to loose any account details, and profile settings... Please help ! Thanks ppl Edit: Update... 1 of the AD servers can browse to the other server ok, but the 2nd server cannot browse to the 1st!!! it says: "the target account name is different" Any one seen ths before????
  8. Is it the same laptop? or any laptop? If you plug in a new machine does it do it? Odd one tho...
  9. WOW !!!! I wanna go there, if not just to "sea" it That is a way cool idea for a night club too ! no neighbours to complain about the noise, and all the fish you can eat !! I wonder what is on the menu ? - Other than fish!!
  10. lol I HAVE !! My adsl router has firewall, and wireless (locked down) so i can roam with out logging on to the server !! Then the server also has a firewall to protect those beneth it - the server has 2 network cards.. certain users dont have web access... but me being wireless means i can take the server down and still have the web !! For my next trick... i need another wireless connection on the "internal" network so i can connect there too... Cos me firewall stops all connections between the two network cards... except the routes i have applied! I still have a few bugs to iron out tho
  11. Nope... I aint that rich !!! I have Win 2k server at home running my network. I have a firewall setup on the server, then all the Pc's have to log on to be able to use the net... It saves virus and cookies...
  12. Blimey... If your that bored can i sugest a hobby? something like paintballing - take an old pc into the woods and "paint it" Or hows this for "unthinkable"... wot u do is go to the nearest toy shop, and buy.... .....a...... .....REAL pack of cards !!!! Then go home and move the keyboard and mouse, and use the new found space to enjoy hours of solitare without using a computer !!! There is also a FREE cheat pack called "i cant do it" which will come after the first few games without compleating the one of them!!! Enjoy !
  13. Setting up a domain won't make any performace difference. But it will make administration of your netwotk shares far easier!
  14. I assume this is a member server? not a domain controller? You can simply rename the server, BUT !!! every pc that uses the database will need reconfiguring with the new name. This is done (on my server anyway) through BDE Admin. But this depends on your aplication of SQL... Double check all the seting first. You could rename it when there is nobody using it, then goto a workstation and edit the paths there to test this ! Hope this helps...
  15. I am asuming the Device drivers are not loaded for the USB Ports themselves, not any devices plugged into them? Start by unplugging the USB devices (if there are any) including internal ones! Remove the device from the hardware manager Restart and let the pc auto-detect the new hardware - watch the install process and it will flash up the type of USB i.e. generic USB controller. If it asks for the drivers for this then insert the CD, if not once it has installed the hardware double check the device in the harware manager. If the usb still isn't working, see if the manufacturers web site has updated drivers. Hope this helps, it certainly sounds like a driver issue. If not, please put the make and model of your motherboard on here. If it is a USB riser card, then try driverguide.com
  16. No. The windows update is only for critical updates and Service packs. The should be a CD that came with the motherboard and if your graphics card is not on board (i.e. the graphics connector is on the same panel as the mouse, keyboard, printer etc...) then there will be a CD for that as well. If you still need drivers, try the manufactures websites or Driverguide.com Hope this helps.
  17. Are there that many icons on the desktop? or do you just want to tidy them up more?
  18. If you use the "Send To" option, then you need to put the link to the folder on the desktop in to the "C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo" folder Hope this helps !
