Connect via terminal server more than 256 colors
MadGutts replied to very_clean's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Oh well.... Thanks Very clean.... Stupid software, that is silly, i'm sure that NT TSE was more than 256.... -
Never heard of it... I would suggest checking the MS knowledge base for removal of hot fixes... They wont charge you either. - i asume it wont let you roll back before these hotfixes? Have you got the latest service pack?

Connect via terminal server more than 256 colors
MadGutts replied to very_clean's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I too have the same problem. I have used the TSE connect disks i created when i setup the TS.... And also downloaded MS newer TS connect program, but neither will give me more than 256 colours Any Ideas? -
For 90% of users on the net, 10Mb is too much ! If everyone was sending over 10Mb the internet would grind to a halt. The limits are set for both data security - to stop data sent being currupted, and for speed. There are still some ppl with a slow old dialup, and before long the spammers and junk mail will start using the 10Mb to send all their crap out. Also, the e-mail servers have plenty of drive space, but the routers dont! So 10Mb is Ample.... If your that desperate to send huge files, then burn a cd and post it ! or setup an ftp site where those who want to spend the time downloading the files can access them!

You can remove the hotfixes from Control panel, Add/Remove Programs. They are towards the bottom of the list. But are you sure that the hotfixes are the problem? Run a spyware program like AdAware and a virus scan to double check. I would suspect there to be some spyware on your machine. Hope this helps.

It is easy to create a RAM disk, but why do you want to? windows has a memory manager. Ram disk is only used in dos to create a temp drive. i.e. when you install 98. Its just used to store some files to enable you to setup the hard drive before loading the OS because running format (for example) from a floppy takes ages. RAMDISK also uses the extended memory in the pc, thus, you will have a decreased extended memory size for the rest of your programs to use. althought this may not be a problem if you have 1Gb of memory! Hope this helps you decide... If not Post why you want a ramdisk....

Looking at your spec, and the overheating Problem. I would suggest your PSU is not man enough for the job - or its on the way out. That would be my first guess - especially if the PSU is getting hot. The other way to prove this, is to remove the new HDD's and run the machine to see what happens. The only other thing that comes to mind, do you have any fan contollers? If you have a temperature and speed gauge on there, it would tell you what was getting too hot first (providing its got more than 1 temp sensor. Hope this is of some help.

Is an a/b/g wireless card worth it? (public use)
MadGutts replied to Professor Frink's topic in Hardware Hangout
The only "G" cards i have seen are back compatible with both "a" and "b" standards. But since you aint paying !!! lol But the new "G+" standard is coming out now as well... As wit all pc bits, when ever you buy a piece of hardware, they will release a newer model. and anyway, if its usb/pcmcia then you can always upgrade later... Hope this is of some help. -
Or you can go into the control panel, double click "network and dial-up connections" right click "Local Area Connection" and click "Properties" then double click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" then type in the IP address for the pc, the subnet and the gateway. And if you know them, the dns settings. Once those settings are in, you can then browse the network... AND ! the cool thing with 2k s you dont need to restart to change the IP address !

EXE Files Don't Run From Explorer or Desktop
MadGutts replied to th3politician's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I hate all viruses, Worms and general nasties..... .... But i hate the Creators More. If there so **** good at wrighting these programs, they should put it to good use and wright some decent stuff that could be used elsewere for good. However... I have had exactly the same problem in 2k. I managed to download a fix though, when i had it it was a worm which didn't happen if you start up in safe mode. so once your into safe mode you can run the fix and its gone. I don't know if this is any help or not, but it does sound like a worm to me. -

Welcome to the forum.... Send some of that sun to England (when you get it)

I agree... Paswords are security. If the isp wern't bothered who was connecting, they wouldn't ask for a password! And why does your freind need your password for his internet?

how to share files accross two netowrks
MadGutts replied to teleri's topic in Networks and the Internet
The other option is to use a terminal server, this would allow files and programs to be run on the server, and only the "screenshot" of what you are doing would be sent down the wire. Hope this helps... -
If you dont use it, or use a firewall then remove it. Is it dragging down your performance?
-
LOL Shouldn't laugh.... But what difference would the OS make to the Virus? If you dont update the virus definitions then you are asking for trouble. The best option is to setup a hardware firewall between the outside world and your network, then have a pc routing with a firewall on it and of course an up to date virus scanner. This works for us, we have had attempts on our network, but none successful, even my collegue tried accessing the internal network and couldn't, so the boss was very happy! We use McAfee Virusscan 7 Enterprise, the server also downloads the virus definitions for the whole network. But hackers are always looking for a challenge.....

I can see nothing wrong with the code. Are you sure the pc you want to exclude has the correct name? goto a command prompt and type "set" (i think that works in 98, been a while! ) Hope that helps.
-
LOL That really is paranoia ! - Should be in funny farm tho...

What OS are you using? And are there roaming profiles?

As far as i'm aware, all w2k act the same. But i'm sure the SID Stays the same. If you ghost a machine, then the SID needs to be changed, because renaming the pc has no effect on the SID. Hope this helps.
