I did the same thing as above, and got my video card to work. Windows will keep asking you if you are sure... this driver/file is not digitaly signed... blah blah blah, just install it already dammit!

I tried installing Longhorn build 5048 and build 4074 on my SATA 60GB Maxtor hard drive and it would just keep freezing. Even if I installed from within Windows XP.... I was using an Intel Desktop Board D865PERL. But like "NIKOS_LA" said, if you do that, it works fine for me!

not unless you count IRC/bittorrent as being public

Don't know what you did or waht went wrong? So you are saying you can't boot into windows XP at all now? I was reading the read me file saying something about if the hard drive was not "C:" when installing Longhorn, but didn't pay much attention to it.... sorry. So can you boot into anything or just not Loghorn, did you make a back up copy of your Boot.inf file? If you can still boot into Windows XP re-install Longhorn. Here is what my boot.inf file looks like; (keep in mind at the moment I have a quadro OS Boot option) ~~~~~~~~~~~ [boot loader] timeout=10 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Blam-O!" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="GaMEr'Z OnLy" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="LTP 9" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Codename Longhorn 5048" /FASTDETECT ~~~~~~~~~~~ if you don't have access to windows or a stable OS, but have access to a floppy disk and some way of downloading a free utility: go to http://www.terabyteinc.com and download "EditBINI", it is under the 'Free Software' section. EditBINI ~~~~~~~ Use this DOS based utility to edit the \BOOT.INI file on an NTFS partition. This program will run under DOS or Win9x/ME. It will not run correctly under Windows NT,2K,XP. hope that helps..

I think it is both, a little of "borrowed" unix in a shell and some other ""borrowed" " code from another system kernel - all in all Microsoft is just a MUTT

Hmm, I wonder If using an old PS2 mouse has the same problem; guess i'll never know since all I have is USB - lol.

Download Longhorn here. Enjoy!

If the PC is old and you say it doesn't come to par with longhorn requirements, then the obvious answer is no. If Windows XP is installed as the Primary OS then Longhorn wil know that you have another OS there, as long as you don't install Longhorn over it! ... Have you even read the "Read Me" yet? (Parts from the Read Me:) Important Information about Setup Computer configurations for installation You can install Longhorn onto a computer that meets the following requirements: The version of Longhorn for x86-based systems requires a partition that must have 6 gigabytes (GB) of free space and 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM. If the video card is sharing system RAM with only 256 MB, Setup will not be able to complete this installation. The version of Longhorn for 64-bit extended systems requires a partition that must have 6 GB of free space and 512 MB of RAM. If the video card is sharing system RAM with only 512 MB, Setup will not be able to complete this installation. You are not installing this preliminary release of Longhorn on a hidden partition or a partition reserved for use by your OEM. The drive on which you want to install Longhorn is not a dynamic disk. Install Longhorn on clean partitions only You can perform only a clean installation of this preliminary release of Longhorn. You cannot upgrade your computer to this release. You can start a clean installation of Longhorn from the installation DVD while you are running Windows XP, a Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 operating system, or Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1. To perform a clean installation, be sure to format the target partition as NTFS before you start the installation. If you have no operating system installed or you are running an operating system other than Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003, start the computer from the installation DVD and perform a clean installation. You can format the partition as NTFS during Setup. You will be unable to install on FAT and FAT32 partitions. Although you cannot choose a format other than NTFS during the installation, if you install this preliminary release of Longhorn on a drive or partition that was previously formatted as FAT, you must reformat the drive to NTFS before you install Longhorn. We recommend that you start Setup from the Longhorn installation DVD. From the Setup Wizard, enter the product key, read and agree to the License Terms for Microsoft Software, and click Clean installation. To format the partition, on the Where to install Windows wizard page, choose the partition you want to format and click Format. Then install Longhorn.

I don't quite understand the last part of your post. No I don't beleive Longhorn was ment to work under MS-DOS. (Read the other posts, you will find how to install longhorn) Use Daemon Tools to mount the image. Then install Longhorn from within Windows XP. Or use VMware Workstation to simluate the install proccess. Make a Windows 2003 Server install, don't use the other ones, and make sure to preformat the Disk space as NTFS with at least 6GB. (next time use the "Search" fuction...)

Dude, your just going to have to re-install longhorn. Longhorn wasn't meant for what you are trying to do with it at the moment.... It is an alpha after all! Try it on build 5048 - LOL.
-
- Run Setup.exe - Click next - agree to license agreement - click next about 4-6 times more - click finish - enjoy! B) LOL, I just answered you. Sorry, been busy with things....

Anyone had Longhorn 5048 running on VMware?
Blam-O! replied to ithinkurdumb's topic in Windows Vista
No luck here using lastest version from VWare 5. It keeps freezing at the same spot everyone else gets stuck! Crappy Micro$oft, it worked fine for build 4074..... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EDIT Micro$oft Windows Codename Longhorn Alpha Build 5048 Ok, I got it working, don't know what I was doing wrong. I did what everyone else did.... It just worked all of a sudden - Installed VMware Workstation v4.5.2 Build 8848 - Made a new Windows Server 2003 Disk space with 12GB - Preformatted the disk with NTFS, using SCSI - Gave it 512MB of system memory - Disabled the sound, (My sound card doesn't work with Longhorn - Audigy2 PlatEx) Worked like a charm! BTW: I tried it on my SATA drive first, that didn't work. The third-forth time around I installed it on my old Maxtor 80GB, IDE. B) -
Wohoo! I love bugs, yummy. Isn't learning fun Kids? Not only is it full of bugs, it is full of crap. Soo much crap it takes away your 2GB of memory just to run it smooth. Of cousre turning off half of the background services will give you back about 68% of your memory uasge. The bigest one is the Index service. Anyone know of some good "Optimization Guides" and some Longhorn "Tweak Guides" for build 5048? I have two Optimization Guides and one Tweak Guide for Longhorn Build 4074, but not for build 5048. Most of the Guide still works for 5048, but not all of them, just wanted to know if anyone had something else to share? .... B) EDIT, I found a light tweak guide, but its not as good as the first one. Longhorn_5048_Tweak_Guide.doc

Just curious... But have you or could you start a new thread on this please? I have longhorn build 4074 and have been playing around with it for some time; but 2 is better then 1 - and a whole board full of MSFN geeks is better than Microsoft!!!

@ "oofki"; You must work for Best Buy... And yes this is very affective on most PC's. Other PC's require a Restore . lol, imho (I use FireFox/Opera most of the time.) btw: you forgot to add... - AutoRuns - Avast! Pro - KazaaBeGone - Stinger -

That's the only part that sucks. I do like the idea that it is DVD-R though; usauly better compatibility... I have been using some DVD+R for data storage/back ups that are 8.5GB big and must be on a single disc - they work like a charm . Although they are still expensive even in bulk when compared to a stardard DVD that holds only 4GB. Not to mention it takes almost 40min to burn a single sided DL DVD on most common DVD burners. Where as it only takes about 12min avg to burn a 4GB per DVD disc. I would rather save the money and time - burn two DVD's at 4GB; 24min time. Later on when the prices go down - speed goes up - and "DL RW/+/-" is availble in one drive that has a good standard; then I will pick one up. LOL! my opinion anyways...
