  1. Tripredacus, I just happened to know about it a few days ago. I asked some friends but they don't know. Some don't use Win 8, and some don't use the same kind of graphics card as mine.
  2. I want to ask another thing about the Windows Experiene Index. On Win 8, why does it say "Engineering Sample" about my graphics card? It doesn't say so on Win 7. I wonder what that means.
  3. The icon of any USB stick that I plug into my computer doesn't display on the system tray. When I have finished doing with the USB, I have to right click on it in the explorer then choose Eject there. It's fine. But it's finer if I have the icon show on the tray so that I can quickly choose to remove it safely. If I just simply pull it out, does it do anything harmful to the files on the stick? My computer has dual boot. And there isn't such a problem when I am using Win 7. Is there anything I can do to solve this? Thanks for any reply.
  4. Maybe some updates has changed the registry and influenced the way it works. I don't dare to turn off the Metro Start any more! I just choose to use the desktop the minute my computer starts and everything displays on the screen. It's better now.
  5. Interesting topic! There are quite a few pictures posted long time ago so I can't see them. Reading through the whole pages tells me that the score is not important at all.
  6. Tripredacus, Sorry, I don't know there is such a topic. Could you remove the image on your post please?
  7. Well, I used the Refresh function and I've already got them back, both Metro Start and the new Task Manager. But I have to re-install some applications too. It took plenty of time, of course. As for Taking Ownership, I just found something helpful here: http://www.intowindows.com/take-ownership-of-files-and-folders-in-windows-8/ PS. It's terrible that I post here by myself!
  8. I tried installing Firefox 6, 5, 4, and then 3 but the scrolling problem still remains. This doesn't happen with IE or Maxthon. And it doesn't happen when I use Firefox on Win 7. How vexing! I wonder if there is a tweaker that can create the Take Ownership command on the context menu.
  9. Er... what is it? Can you post your score? Here is mine, just for fun as you said! -------------------------- Edit: deleting image
  10. Is this score important? It gives scores so that we know which component needs upgrading, right? Some people told me this score is just for fun when I ask about it! On Win 8, I have the base score of 4.9, whereas it says 5.1 on Win 7. It has already had Aero effect after the first boot into Win 8 so I don't install any graphic driver for it. Maybe it is the reason.
  11. I also see this a lot while browsing the webs with Maxthon. It doesn't annoy much because when a window pops up, I just move the mouse to another position and the window closes down itself!
  12. Hi MagicAndre, thanks for replying. I search for RPEnabled in the registry and I have 4 keys in all. They are located in the following paths: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer The values were all set to 1. I changed all of them to 2 as you said, restarted my computer, and I couldn't have the TM I wanted. I also lost the ribbon and the automatic in Window color and appearance, which I can't stand at all! I've already changed all the values to 1 again. It seems to me that Win 8 doesn't allow users to change anything in the registry! It's OK, however. I don't have the new looking Task Manager but I still have some other features such as the explorer ribbon, auto color theme to match the wallpapers, and new copy/move/delete dialogs... (Hey, I like the automatic color for themes so much! When I first knew about it, I kept changing the desktop wallpaper again and again just to see how it tint the theme over and over!) As for the problem with Firefox, I hope someone who is using it on Win 8 can tell me whether they have the same problem or not. I will try installing another old version to see what will happen. Thank you again. Edit: removing the image
  13. Hi everyone, 1/ I installed Win 8 around a month ago. After the installation, I didn't like the metro start and it was hard to manage things without the old desktop so I turned it off, using Metro UI Tweaker. I chose the option to disable the Metro Start Menu only. Two weeks later I decided to turn it on again with the same tool, but it wouldn't do! It's not a big problem at all but recently I find out the Task Manager works so weird. It takes nearly 15s to display on the screen! And it looks old just like the one on Win 7. Does anyone know anything about the problem? Is there any way to take back the new task manager without reinstalling Win 8? 2/ My favorite browser is Maxthon but recently I try using Firefox as well. When I scroll the mouse wheel, sometimes it zooms out/in the text on the webs instead of scrolling down/up the web page! Then I have to click and drag the scroll bar. I find it very annoying. I tried an older version of Firefox but it didn't help. I wonder if there is anything else I can try to stop the problem. Thanks in advance for any reply.
  14. Huh? ... OK, I don't come to the forums as often as I used to. If I have small problems I always try to find the answers by using Google search. It will save my time and people's time! I only come to ask for help when I am tired of searching and reading through a lot of information but nothing can solve my problem. It's interesting to hear people telling about the forums they are joining. Again, sorry for not having a poll any more!
  15. Huh? What about your desktop? Why don't you show it first? OK, just kidding. If you want to see everyone's desktop, there is a sub forum here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/24-windows-desktops-screenshots/ You can post yours there too. Just find out a right thread for it.
  16. Wow, time passes by so fast, it's a year ago! Hi everyone! I did make a poll but I lost it by some mistake. It happened when I edited the first post, deleting some sentences. I really wanted to get it back but failed at that time. So now, we can only talk about how many forums we've joined, which one we like best, and on which one we are most active. No poll to vote any more, and sorry for that. Well, as for me, I'm still a member of two forums! But I don't come and write posts as often as I used to. I even stop going to the forums I don't belong to. However, I find it always nice to return here and say something like this. I am glad to know everyone and everything are fine. Tripredacus, Thanks for fixing the poll, or rebuilding it as you said. Not sure why it's gone. How weird!
  17. Never mind, Tripredacus. On second thought, it's not a big problem. I think I will be accustomed to it soon.
  18. Hi, Ruudino. I began to use the internet 4 years ago. The person who taught me how to use a browser to surf the net told me this first lesson: "Never let people know about your personal information. The less they know about you, the better it will be!" I have done exactly what he said, and I feel very comfortable when talking to strange people on the net. I've chatted to a lot of people in many countries and what I 've told them is 99,9% of the truth , I can tell them what I like and don't like, I let them know what I am good at and what I am bad at. I answer all of their questions except 3 things about myself: age, gender, and nationality! However, to people I meet in real life I can only keep my age secret! Well, I don't know what to choose in the poll, but it's quite an interesting question. I wish you and your Marijke good luck.
  19. Tarun, what I care about is why some people can have such only lines on their posts, and I would like the same on my posts. Can you tell me how to make it, please? What should I change in my profile options? By the way, I don't tell what OS I am using but people can know what it is. Because I always put my problems on the right sub forums, XP for example. And I know you and most of the others don't care about a person's gender when you are answering him/her to help. Then why bother putting this information on? Thank you for replying.
  20. I would like to have only 3 lines (Group, Posts, Joined) under my name like this post: On my posts there are Gender and OS, which are not necessary. I don't give information about these, then why are they displayed like that? How can I change the way it looks? Thanks in advance for any replies. I read all the posts on that topic, and then read some different old topics. I feel that there are no females on this forum at all! Not sure why gender should be put on every post! The only thing I like about the new theme is that I can choose a color to match the current theme on my computer. And, I find that posts with quotes look more beautiful than the others! Maybe because of the colorful background!
  21. Jaclaz, I am glad you made it clear. That sentence "I simply think IE8 is newer...", I talked to Dencorso only, not to Galahs. I just suggested him to use it because I think it is more updated than IE7. And they both look nearly the same. OK, I must agree with you on this, we only say our own opinions, let people decide what to do or use.
  22. Jaclaz, What exactly do you want to tell me? I feel sleepy if I have to read a lot of long English posts! What Office did you install on your computer? You think that I shouldn't use IE8 and Office 2007? Don't worry, I don't take this very seriously. Just tell me exactly and shortly what you think about the way I am using the computer. Maybe your words can help in some way. Although I am rather stubborn, I'll follow advice if I find it really good and nice! And hopefully, Galahs allows us to talk off topic! Edit: have to log out now.
  23. Cool! Maybe I missed the thread when I didn't come to the forum often to read the posts. I nearly forget how Office 97 looks like! I have used Office 2003 on XP for a long time. Office 2007 was installed just a few months ago. I didn't like it at first. I find it OK now.Sorry I am talking about IE again! If you can stand IE7 then surely you can use IE8, Dencorso. They look nearly the same.
  24. Dencorso,I simply think IE8 is newer, more updated, so it is better than IE7. I'm a little curious, have you ever tried IE8? As for Office 97, of course we choose to use what we feel like the most. But when you have a file from Office 2003 or 2007 and want to open it, I don't think Office 97 can do it for you. I myself don't try to use all the newest applications. But if something is important and needs updating, and my computer meets the system requirements, I won't refuse to use the newer. Ah, the link from post 23 leads to a so long reading!
  25. Herbalist, When MAM or Avira found something, I saw that most of them come from the Temporary Internet Files folder. I didn't mean that cleaning the temp folders could completely protect my computer. I thought it partly did the protection, so it helped in some way. I use Disk Cleanup twice a week, and think it's good enough. Thank you for answering. The explanation is very clear.
