  1. I installed this Classic Shell, but just a few minutes of going through the settings I uninstalled it! IMO, the best skin of this is Windows 7 Aero, it looks nicer in comparison to the others. It seems that I am already used to the lack of the old Start Menu.
  2. I happened to run an old game and had this error: I clicked OK then this popped up: This game runs fine on W7. I wonder if there is a way to force the card to support 800x600 resolution so that I can play this game without having to boot into W7. Thanks for any help and suggestions.
  3. JorgeA, Your topic is very impressive. Thanks. I just want to talk a little about launching Windows Defender. I am curious why you have to open it manually. I let it start automatically with Windows and can forget about it. My computer is always in protected status. Windows Defender will notify me of any malicious threat it finds.
  4. I tried pressing Windows key, and even clicking on the lower-left corner, it just toggled between the Search Screen and the Start Screen. Then if I clicked on the Desktop tile, the screen flicked and nothing happened, I was still at the Start screen. I hope you are not confused with my description!
  5. Thank you. Umm... I'm afraid of using the Search on the Start Screen (well, I won't call it Metro Start any more!) It's OK if there are some results after I hit Search. But if it doesn't find anything, I can't return to the desktop screen at all. Then the only way to get rid of Start Screen is to sign out and then sign in again!
  6. Can you post it, MagicAndre? What is it? You don't like it, you can always go to the old view of the desktop. I don't like the Metro Start either. I rarely turn to it, just working with the desktop all the time!
  7. Hi back! I think a downloader may help with the problem. If you haven't used anyone, give this a try: http://www.filehippo.com/download_orbit_downloader/ It works with both Opera and Firefox.
  8. OK, I've installed Windows Consumer Preview and Firefox works perfect! I am pleased that the problem related to the mouse scrolling has gone. And what's more? When I plug a USB stick into my computer, the icon to remove it safely is there on the system tray. How nice! I think I love this version of W8! And the About Windows says I can use WCP till January 2013. Edit: remove the image.
  9. It didn't allow me to install WCP over the current WDP! I had to format the partition and install WCP fresh new. I have no complaints so far after a day of using it. Ah, although the Windows Experience Index has a new scale from 1.0 to 9.9, my computer score is the same as before; 4.9!
  10. But the WDP will expire soon, you can't keep it for comparison for long. OK, the downloading here was finished just a few minutes ago. I've decided to install this WCP onto the WDP. I am not sure how much the registry and the user account will be changed, so I need to finish some other stuff and do some backup first. Perhaps I'll have my computer ready for the installation at weekend! I've enjoyed reading your posts and others' discussions about WDP and I'd like to read your experience of this WCP too. Thanks. Then I guess I'll have to uninstall and unpin almost everything on the Metro Start again! Thank you for the very first preview.
  11. Thanks for the announcement and the links. It will take time to download the setup. I must try it as soon as the downloading has finished. Do you install it too? I'm afraid I'll need some suggestion. How should I install this version? By upgrading from the current WDP or installing it on a different partition? Which choice do you think is better? Thanks again.
  12. JorgeA, I think you don't need to install any extra antivirus or anti-spyware programs. Just go to Action Center and make sure all the options there are on; Network firewall, Windows Update, Virus protection, Spyware and unwanted software protection, Windows Smartscreen, and so on ... Windows Defender works fine and it keeps my computer completely clean.
  13. I've just found this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21462/how-to-enable-or-disable-the-libraries-feature-in-windows-7/ It's related to the registry, so read it carefully before you decide to use it.
  14. I watched Flipped a few days ago. What a lovely film! Both Juli and Bryce are so cute. I laughed a lot with Bryce's funny thought about the school auction. There's a trailer here:
  15. I didn't try Win 7 during its beta time, so I don't know for how long the evalution lasted. I really like WDP and hope to use it for a little longer! The only thing I don't like about it is the Metro Start, all other new features are nice, especially the automatic color theme.
  16. Perhaps people can know the reason and help if you tell them which browser you are using to log in.
  17. OK, just want to tell some more problems! Sometimes when I go to the desktop, there is an icon of Homegroup jumping out from nowhere. I can't delete or rename it. I can move it around on the desktop only. If I log off and then log on again, it's gone. I don't know what made such a weird problem and it has happened twice. I also notice that Control Panel is always viewed by Category although I have changed it to Small/Large Icons. It will automatically turn back to Category view the next time I open it. This doesn't happen on W7 or XP for sure. Finally, if I open Explorer, click on File > Help > About Windows it says nothing about the expiration . But if I view Windows version by opening Run and typing "winver", it says the evaluation copy will expire on 12 March 2012.Too bad, I thought it would last longer!
  18. JorgeA, Sorry about the link. Maybe I misunderstood and thought that you wanted to replace what you don't need on the Metro Start with something else more useful. I posted the link to let you know how to do it. If you don't need to add anything to the Metro screen, then forget about it. In fact, I put just a few items on the new Metro Start so that it can share the burden with the desktop! I don't like a desktop with so many shortcuts, and I don't like a deserted Metro screen either after I removed a lot of things on it. I believe it's more convenient for many people (and I am among them!) to have the shortcuts on the desktop, and run them there. About IE10, I just found this link. Hope it can help: http://forums.techarena.in/technology-internet/1436467.htm I rarely use IE but if I have to, I use the one on the desktop, not the one on the Metro. It works OK for me. But I am using Maxthon now, as usual!
  19. Er... should I hang myself for suggesting him to try W8? Indeed he didn't mention it in his post. But I must say it's interesting to read what people are discussing in this topic!
  20. Hi Andromeda, Your desktop looks cool! I like your post, but I am a little curious and want to ask something. Why did you have to install W8 so many times? As for me, I've installed it twice and used the Refresh to repair it once. I didn't want to ruin the current OS on drive C, so I had it on another drive. First I installed it directly on D, where I store games and a lot of other stuff too! It worked fine. But when my friend said that it was better if I had the OS on a clean seperate partition, then I reinstalled it. And it took me plenty of time to remove W8 from drive D safely and completely. I made another partition out of D and named it H, on which I've installed W8 for the second time and it has been working so good so far. I refreshed it once to take back the new-looking Task Manager, which I lost after I tried to disable the Metro Start. Running the Setup inside folder Sources gave me the choice of upgrading to W8 from the old OS or installing it new onto any partitions I have. PS. I used Metro UI Tweaker to turn off the Metro Start and it didn't show Microsoft Confidential part on my desktop. You can check it here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/metro-ui-tweaker-windows-8-released I wish you a happy new year too, friend.
  21. JorgeA, You can replace the items on the Metro Start with any other ones you like. I uninstall and unpin nearly everything on the original Metro Start. Then I put on some applications I really want there. This guide here helped me a lot to do it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/add-remove-programs-windows-8-start-screen/ Dencorso, Alt + Tab has the same function as that on Win XP or Win 7. But it looks totally awesome! Ctrl + Esc works just like the Windows key, it toggles between the old desktop and the Metro Start.
  22. Why shouldn't a beta OS be suggested here? I suggest it because I find it good enough to try. And above all it's free. You said it was full of bugs? Then at least tell me about one or two of them, please. What are they? I use my computer for simple needs, and Win 8 works fine for me. So far I haven't got any critical errors when I am using it. Actually I've got some small problems but they are not serious. It's OK because, as you said, it's still a beta.
  23. Hi Thydreamwalker, Thanks for replying. I set all of them are on. But the pendrive icon doesn't display during the time it is plugged in the USB port. Only when I choose "Eject" from the context menu of Explorer then I can see the icon pop up shortly, saying that it is safe to remove the drive now. ---------------------------- Edit: removed picture
  24. Thydreamwalker, Well, I simply think if the computer can run a newer OS, then I will give it a try. I never use Vista. I installed Win 7 in April this year. However, I rarely boot into it since I started to use Win 8. Actually I want to tell the OP to try Win 8 but he didn't mention it in his first (and only!) post! Ah, nice to see you around, friend!
  25. If you have a new computer with 4 GB of RAM or more, then Win 7 is a better choice, I think.
