  1. The problem is that when you reinstalled the SP2 over RP7, it didn't replace files with a newer version (most if not all) but changed the registry to the older settings, resulting in a mess. To restore a working config now, you could extract manually all files from SP2/your 98 CD and copy them from DOS like Awergh said. Or... I don't remember the switches but there must some way to "force" the install of SP2 over newer files. Try to look this way.
  2. I think this is just another crusade from XP die-hard fans against older OSes. NTFS is not the solution to protect your computer... It can be usefull but it's not the solution. Sure, NTFS can prevent access files but if you log in as an administrator (which you need to do to fully use your computer), you lost most of the protection. Ok, you can still protect specific folders but that means you need a password to open them -> dedicated programs can do the same on FAT32. > Than, just use AES encrypted storage to protect your sensitive files. Besides, it's not a good idea to rely on your files system to protect your data ! I mean, if they're already on your computer, where you've kept your credit card numbers, you've already lost ! Nobody should ever be able to break in your computer. You can do your best to prevent this from happening. Indeed, the biggest security threats are open ports and Win98 can be secured within minutes -> Get a firewall that stealth your ports outside, then close your ports from inside (get an offline port scanner, find what ports are open and close the programs that opens them). Eventually, unbound file sharing from TCP/IP and you'll be fine. A fully networked computer (local and internet) does NOT need any open port (despite what XP makes you think)! When you boot, all ports should be closed. The when you start your browser, related ports will open to allow data transmission. Finally, do what Galahs wrote: Get a good firewall that will ask for your permission before opening any connection. (-> use best security settings and never allow connection without warning) Get Firefox / Opera / anything you want but IE. Get a good (free/commercial) updated antivirus and scan every file you download (you don't even need a real-time shield if you do that). Keep only needed programs at startup (disable auto-updates, report functions, programs you use but that don't need to start with your computer -many-...). Use a program that protects your system files (like the excellent Winpatrol). and make Windows backups.
  3. You tried sharing a folder right? But it's unclear to me if you have tried sharing a full FAT32 partition? Does it give similar results?
  4. Check the Restore CD. Often, the *.cab files needed to install 98 are hidden in a lost sub-directory. If you can find an oemsetup.exe or WinXX_XX.cab files, there's a chance. If you don't find anything then eBay's your friend.
  5. I think you can hex-edit explorer to have flat buttons but I don't remember exactly where I read about that. However, I suggest the use of Hook99. What do you think?
  6. News: French translation is over. I sent you a PM. Feedback: I found a few problems but I guess that's how you go from beta to final! - The program can't find how much RAM I have anymore. - French language is detected but english text is displayed even while french strings are nox translated. How comes? - Manual settings for keyboosttime and mintimeslice don't seem to work (is it just me?) - There's a problem with chunksize when configured automaticaly: it displays the same string twice Hope that helps!
  7. So you did read my post about win.ini! Here's for french: sLanguage=fra I'm on the translation ! It'll come soon.
  8. I'm not sure I understand. You want to install both KUP (Kernel Update Project) and 2gb patch? If that's the case, yes, you can. Just install the 2gb patch first.
  9. Ecco amico : Hope you'll use it! PS: updated the list in my precedent post
  10. Ok people. I got a message from a mod: the size limit for images in signature is 300 pixels wide. So you can use the normal userbars everywhere else on the net but not here. But don't worry! I made special versions you can use on MSFN ! Enjoy! Win95/98 style : -english -french -italian -german Win98/Me style : -english -french -italian -german And for fun: Updated.
  11. Good decision! Though, I suggest you make Copy2gb and Enable48bitsLBA sticky too!
  12. Merci ! Here you go. Hope you like it. (PM me if I didn't get your point)
  13. Ok, I'll give a fake date if there's no other option. Still, I believe it's a bug since when you register, you DON'T have to pick a birthday (unless this has changed now). Anyway, thanks for the info ! PS: updated my signature. I didn't figure it'd be a problem since it matches the userbars standard. But here, it's 300px large now.
  14. Cool, thanks!Glad to see you're already using it! Well, I can do one for you without the colorful squares/yellow line if that's what you want (is it?).However, I'd prefer not to break the Win9x unity and keep the "still using windows 9x" text. But if you REALLY want a "still..95" one and ask nicely... By the way, french or english?
  15. I'd like to add my new website to my profile but no matter what I try, I just can't modify it. I get this message: The error returned was: You entered an illegal date for your birthday. You may have chosen 30th February, for example. I don't want to enter a birthday. Is this why ? (I amended my profile a few month ago and I didn't have to enter a date, has it changed?) Thanks in advance.
  16. Win.ini contains strings like "sLanguage" and "sCountry". Pick the one you prefer!
  17. I've been thinking a bit recently. With the banning(?) of an important member (can't you do anything MDGx?) and all the reactions after that...now Tihiy moving to W2k (please don't, we need you here!)... other people moving too... I think we need a boost! So come on, let's not give up people! We must stay committed and defend Win9x. It's our favorite OS, we paid for it and we have the right to keep using it if we want to ! People are already beginning to start fighting to keep XP and they'll get into the same troubles as us. That might very well help us out! Anyway, all this to say that I saw a "proud to still be on XP" userbar recently and I decided to look for a Win9x one. There are app103's avatars (thanks man!) but a userbar can be nice too and since I didn't find any, I decided to make my own one. -> Feel free to use it and show that you're proud to use Windows 95, 98, SE or Me !!! version française: english version: Hope you like it and use it !
  18. Ok. Just tested the new version deeply. And...everything runs perfectly! It detected the right amount of RAM, installed everything fine and used the backup to restore the original file. So what can I say... your program rulez !!! :
  19. Something interesting you can read on intel's site: Operating System/Application Compatibility ------------------------------------------ There is no Operating System impact that is foreseen as the change in design is in the Physical Layer. Any future improvement of PCI Express will occur in the Physical Layer. Compatibility with the PCI addressing model (a load-store architecture with a flat address space) is maintained to ensure that all existing applications and drivers operate unchanged. PCI Express configuration uses standard mechanisms as defined in the PCI Plug-and-Play specification. The software layers will generate read and write requests that are transported by the transaction layer to the I/O devices using a packet-based, split-transaction protocol. PCI Express Compatibility ------------------------- PCI Express maintains backward compatibility with PCI to ensure that all existing applications and drivers operate unchanged. The PCI configuration space and the programmability of I/O devices are key concepts that are unchanged within the PCI Express Architecture; in fact, all operating systems should be able to boot without modification on a PCI Express-based platform. The run-time software model supported by PCI is a load-store, shared memory model - this is maintained within the PCI Express Architecture in order to enable existing software to execute unchanged. The changes implemented in the PCI Express architecture affect the Physical layer only. The problem is that your 7300GT is already not supported officially on AGP. If you want to clean old drivers, try the drivers tools here or Driver Cleaner Personnaly my ATI 800GT is seen as two standard VGA PCI graphic cards (it has VGA + DDVI). I've never tried to install drivers since I also have an AGP card in my box.
  20. Ok, here's mem in action. Never liked that thing. There's a freemem with freedos I think if you're interested. Anyway : And here's the error:
  21. Just tested it. Since I didn't have much time to provide feedback about Autopatcher recently, I thought I'd do that one! Seems nice. The readme about all the functions is really useful. Guess it took you time to compile all that stuff! Anyway, I've encoutered several problems. It detected only 1mb of RAM... So I told the prog I have 1gb. I choosed the High performance preset and it wrote the values correctly. Then I tried to tweak some settings and it worked fine. However, it failed to save and install. It displayed several "error creating file" or something like that and ended with an error. Don't worry, this app is on the right way! Keep up your work! Ask if you want more info / reproduction of the error.
  22. Nice to hear that. It's always nice to have a choice. Thanks!
  23. Don't edit the image. Export it somewhere. Then convert it to 256 colors using Photoshop/the Gimp or whatever you want and import it back. Here you have a nice colorful bitmap when you open system properties!
