  1. Hey, that sounds interesting! Borland resource workshop does the job but in a very unhandy manner. Thanks for the info. Only problem is that the free VC++ express 2005 is XP SP2 only. Do older versions do that as well?
  2. Ok, I have to agree with you about the banning. Why the f*** did they ban her after all she's done for the 98 community and for MSFN in general? I've checked her last posts. Nothing bad there. Now WE're going to pay for that? At least give us real reasons that we can understand! But for the rest? WTF? People do their best here and time is something limited. Anyway, maybe it's my limited english skills but I can't understand the title of your thread or even what you expect from people in it so that might one reason why nobody posted. I can understand you've had a bad day but you still can't shoot down everyone's work for no reason... Take some time to relax, it's always a good thing.
  3. I think the fact it's turbo-cached might be the problem. Turbo-cache means the graphic cards uses the motherboard RAM instead of embedded video RAM (to reduce the amount of GPU RAM -> expensive). That's why to benefit from the whole 512mb video RAM capacity, you must have at least 1gb of physical RAM. This is probably something that Win98 doesn't support well. LE cards and SE cards are usually turbo-cached (look for the initials TC in products description). It's widely used on low-cost graphic cards and on laptops. You'll probably have more success with a non TC card.
  4. Try to disable evey "power support" items in BIOS. You can also uninstall the yellow marked device and reinstall ULI's drivers. Tihiy posted a reg file to disable ACPI support some time ago but since I can't find the link anymore but still have it on HD, here's the entry to modify: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Detect] "ACPIOption"(dword)=2 HTH
  5. Hi Dr. Mac. Usually updating windows (SP2, autopatcher...) helps with this kind of problem. And then, well I guess it depends of what you install but for an out of the box 98... This programs tend to act once windows is started so they could be the reason of the hour glass: - systray.exe -> not stricltly needed (though not useless) - mstask.exe -> something to be disabled if you don't use scheduled tasks - taskmon.exe -> logs the programs you use to increase defrag efficiency (personnaly, I see it as a privacy vulnerability that slow things down and disable it) For better investingations, get a logger that will tape every program action while windows starts. Hope this helps!
  6. Eh. Chill out guys! I have a 6200 right now on my AGP port. I'm writing here with it on Win98. It uses 81.98 drivers and works perfectly fine (play games and stuff). So 6200 IS supported officially since a long time despite the fact it doesn't appear in the readme. In fact, here's what you find in nvaml.inf: NVIDIA&DEV_00F4.DeviceDesc="NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE" Anyway, the Win98 drivers were not made for PCI-e cards when XP/2K drivers were. So I don't know, have you tried comparing the XP package with the 98 one? 98's is 19mb big when xp's is 29mb. 98 probably can't use the whole speed of PCI-e (well I don't have a clue actually) but I'm sure it detects it as a PCI port. I know ATI X8xx PCI-e cards work in 98 (look at older topics, there are several testimonies about that). Hope you make it work.
  7. I may be wrong but: LE is for Lite edition -> cheapest SE is for soft edition I think -> middle (originally ATI but nvidia uses it sometimes now) TC is for turbo cache -> uses the mobo memory instead of GPU memory You're saying the LE isn't listed in the official drivers? I myself got a 939-Dual-Vsta so it has both AGP and PCI-e. To make one the AGP work, you've got select it in BIOS as primary, install the AGP drivers, then the GPU drivers and disable the PCI-express slot in Windows (VGA PCI adapter for me). SO: if you want to make the PCI-e work, select it in BIOS and disable the AGP port in 98 if you see it. I'm guessing you might have problems with the nvidia drivers (supposed to be AGP only) and the fact they see an AGP slot. Personnaly I have both AGP (win98) and PCI (winxp) cards so that's why I see a standard VGA PCI adapter. Try pluging a card in both and disabling it after.
  8. I still think many people in fact bought Vista and are just using it right now since it's brand new. It doesn't mean those people won't keep 98 on their 2nd or 3rd PC. Besides, if the number of wired computers went up since Vista got out (increase of sells due to people who were waiting for Vista to buy a new computer), the percentage of 98 users can lower (relative) even though as many people as before keep using it (absolute). (don't konw if that was clear?!) Anyway, I still hope you're wrong but eh... we're used to be a small community now. As long as we stay committed and united, we'll make 98 live longer than any OS has ever done!
  9. Here you go: http://rapidshare.com/files/16328925/Big_HDD_2.0.zip.html
  10. I'm not sure if I understand. Do you use Maximus-Decim's NUSB? - If you already have it, then I don't understand. You see the device but can't open it? Please explain your problem again. - If not, then get it installed now and your camera will be recognized just like under XP (all the other USB storage devices as well). > http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605
  11. Hi man. Reduce to 16bits and delete autoexec? No way for me (I need good graphics and azerty keyboard support)! What I do: Delete the "Applog" folder and "common files" folder (empty since the french "fichiers communs" is used instead) Turn off those useless "Schedule tasks". Use a small start menu. I probably forget a lot of things...
  12. If terminating spool32 works, I think there is a tiny "apps killer" program included in the Win98 powertoys but I can't remember for sure. Check that if you have the PToys. You can also use Batchrun since it's free and works fine. This way you can program a script that will kill spool32 and shut down the computer. You can then put it on the desktop for your client. I've also solved a lot of network problems in the past by using IPX/SPX instead of TCP/IP (better to be kept for internet only). But of course the change takes time and can create even more problems.
  13. Well, you've checked most stuff. What eslse could you try... A problem with spool32.exe maybe? Just check you don't have WinME version installed (I've had problems with it and I think MDGx took it off from SE2ME -am I right MDGx?-) Otherway, the only issue is the ink report function failing? Well, in that case, you can try to uninstall completely the printer (delete the registry entries, the inf and everything or try again with a new cartridge) and reinstall. Or bypass the HP program if it uses any. What do you mean by doesn't shut down? Hangs when? This could come from something else (even nvidia drivers make that happen). And do you use fixed IPs? Anyway, that's weird. You CAN buy a new printer and see but if it doesn't work, don't count on assistance for 98 (especially since Vista's now out).
  14. Version 1.8!!! Didn't even have time to try 1.7! Ok, will download ASAP. : (nice avatar by the way soporific).
  15. WTF? I read LLXX is banned? What's going on here?
  16. We don't supply this kind of link here... Why would you need 98 anyway if you don't plan using it? If you just want to format/convert a NTFS partition to FAT32, any good disk utility will do. You can even use XP's tool for that. Check here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html
  17. Are you sure the update didn't simply reset temperature properties in the CMOS? And if you're certain the BIOS update messed things up, you can still flash it with the old version (but be carefull, it's never a good idea to play around too much with the BIOS).
  18. If you read carefully the KUP topic, you'll see people posted what's working and what's not. You should post your questions there. Here's the latest list you can find on the thread: +apparently Oblivion works. I can tell you Civ4 runs fine but it probably does without KUP since it's coded in Python. WMP11 and Windows live messenger won't work whatever you do (but you're not missing anything really, there are tons of very good opensource/free softwares doing the same job).
  19. CD drives are disabled in safe mode so that's normal (don't understand why since such devices almost never crash but anyway -for speed maybe?-). For the rest well... can you disable your network adaptater physically (unplug the PCMCIA card) or is it integrated? In the last case, can you disable it in BIOS? You could also try to install some generic ndis4 drivers. The HP CD will probably work but I totally understand your position. 40€ is a lot of money.
  20. There are several things to try. First you can try to extract the vxd from the Win98 CD in case its wrongly copied (seems unlikely). You can as well boot in safe mode and delete the mouse driver from there. In case it fails, you can rename the vxd to something msmouse.old and see but I don't really believe it will help. You can try to delete Enum from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in registry. Sometimes this mouse driver issue is caused by other drivers (modems, GPU and even simply USB stuff pluged in) or Wifi PCMCIA cards (did you add any?). So like charles__ suggested, your good to unplug everything that wasn't there originaly and take of drivers one by one. By the way, when you skip loading this vxd in step by step mode, what happens?
  21. Artic Silver (edit: of course jeremy, I meant cooling; !) make good products from what I've heard. The NVsilencer is nice even though personnaly I prefer Zalman fans (the CNPS7700 is quite cheap now and still efficient). And yeah your temperatures are fine (especially hard disk with just stock). But what the hell is remote to be that hot? Your GPU? PS: 7670RPM ! That must sound like an aircraft landing! Wonder why you want new fans
  22. Hmmm. Usually this kind of symptom reveals a registry crash but if you just formatted it can't be that... Safe mode works? Ok maybe a vxd/driver problem then... Have you tried step by step boot (if that's the english name) to see exactly where it fails?
  23. You could try to modify the .inf from 82.16 but you'd still have a problem: i945 chipsets have no Win98 drivers. You could try Win2k intel drivers but everything would be highly experimental. If you have time, try a double boot and see. You never know. In fact, if it worked it'd be great news not only for you.
  24. A nice french abandonware sites with diamonds games on it (with games in english too, don't worry). http://www.abandonware-paradise.fr And for people who speak french: you can find rare abandonwares here: http://www.gameslover.org/index.php?option...9&Itemid=47 Thanks Xavierxray for the OpenTDD link! I had no idea they were doing something like that. Cool really. B)
  25. Well, can you be more precise. Where does it fail? No drivers? No boot? etc...
