  1. So basically, nobody knows what they're talking about except you. The rest of the world (or even MSFN) is just a mass of complete idiots with useless opinions. Your posts made me think about those politicians who wanted us to vote the european Constitution so much. We voted 'no' but for them it's not because it's we did not want it. It's because we didn't understand how good it was! Silly us... Anyway. I agree that between a 5kb prog and a 50kb prog, there's an unoticable difference, but the way you think (since we got space, let's waste it!) is dangerous. That's how we now got apps or OS that are getting a lot bigger for no reasons. And no, not everyone can afford buying a 500gb HDD every year. About .NET: the average users doesn't like .NET because it requires to install hundreds of data (=bloat) just to be able to execute some small programs. Yes, it IS making programmers life easier but its also a pain for users. No matter if people have more space or faster internet connections. Work on that (smaller .NET installers for exemple) instead of flaming those that disagree...
  2. Ok, originaly Christmas was religious and now is really commercial but still. It's a nice day to see your family and get presents. New years eve only means people yelling at midnight and cars klaxonnig all night.
  3. Well, isn't the autopatcher here for that? It will even install DX9, MP9 and IE6 for you. But maybe you just don't like the fact that the autopatcher mixes unofficial and official updates? Maybe ask Soporific about that. He might do an option to install unofficial updates separatly (well, lot of work though).
  4. Ok. Enough. Linux's the best, Win2k's the best, myOS is the only one on earth, the rest worth nothing...bla bla bla... This is going nowhere. This thread was made by somebody who wanted to understand why we like Win98 so much. He asked an "honnest question" so we gave him our reasons. Done. You don't have to agree and we're not forcing anyone to switch to 98 but we're getting tired of fighting flamers all day. Why do you even come? This is our forum and if you don't like it, leave... And since when the unofficial support is bloated? You just don't like RP Lite? Then don't install it. Oh, and don't dream... Linux is not the future. (Unfortunatly) Vista is.
  5. Wow, this is going totally off-topic... but eh...since that now seems the place to say it: "Bonnes fêtes à tous" !!! (et vive le Québec! )
  6. To answer globally to your posts, there are two types of peoples in this thread, those who ask an honest question and get answers, and those that start a flamewar. Don't expect the same kind of reaction. Do you realize you're not making any sense? We're in a Win98 forum !!! If people don't have it they won't come here! You don't like this forum then don't come here! We live fine without it. There are tons of unofficial updates and everything is fixed way better than when just M$ was on it. So indeed, Win98 is still supported. So because you heard of one guy who had a problem with a DVD drive in 98, DVD drives don't work on 98? Lol. The guy was not smoking but you've got to be pretty high to post such conclusions seriously. You definitly don't know what you're talking about... Why would anybody want your win2k in 2006? NT crap without the advantages of eye-candy and game compatibility XP provides...But we respect your choice. "Respect" means that even if we don't like it, we don't come in your forum to say it's useless. Petr and Ponch already answered very well so no point wasting more time.
  7. Hi 98 Guy! Isn't that what you're looking for ? Check here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46581
  8. Thanks Petr for PE Explorer!!! It's a good program and with it I was indeed able to modify new Shell32.dll. : Thanks as well to MDGx and anonymous author of this great patch. And to Max_04 who asked about the problems localizing it! Anyway, I've made a french version of the update executable. Download is here : win9x4ever.online.fr
  9. Vista is very demanding for purposes that nobody really needs (3D windows? really?) but fine. I understand that for the average user, it's nice to have an eye-candy OS. The real problem is that using security as an excuse, they prevent users from controlling their PC to make (they think) more money. Soon, you won't be allowed to play music or watch a video that's on your hard disk (DRM are already there but it will get much worse with Vista). That's something dangerous and that's something even the basic user doesn't like. Besides, if M$ really cared about security they would have got rid of services and all the bloat they include in the package. For exemple, the OS would have no open port out of the box until you decide to connect... Why should we ask M$ or any major to do anything on our PCs? What about people without an internet connection (or who pay every time they connect)? What about states and administrations dealing with citizens personal informations? The whole concept of property is being jeopardized. Sure, you'll be able to overpass all that with tweaks and hacks and they've changed the EULA a bit. But is this really the best kind of OS we could have? They're will just be more Linux fan out there.
  10. Ok. (just for info, the 77.72 don't support TNT2 but the 71.84 do) To stay in the subject, I've downloaded the BFG drivers linked by Bugtest (thanks man! ) and looked at it. As Petr stated, it adds a few lines to Nvaml.inf to support 7800gs and others. So if they did it, it's possible. That would be an incredible achievement to make Win98 support newer cards. Even if it's AGP only.
  11. You might download System Information as well. This will give you all the info you need about your computer. And it's free, small and runs without having to be installed... edit: sorry, I was too long to post. But that can still be useful
  12. Weird, I've seen this chipset on mobos but I can't find any ALC800 on Realtek's site. Only 850 or 880... I still think it's UAA based. I've had the same kind of problems with some other UAA chipset but with all sorts of high CPU activities (not only net traffic). I never found the reason. Not very helpful is it?. However I can tell you is it stoped when I plugged a seperate sound card in.
  13. I believe the Detonator 5x were the fastest avaible for the TNT2. However they're quite old so if you plan to play games released later, you may need to install the latest Forceware supporting this card (7x).
  14. Just the same. Their ads are holly attracting and it has what a computer will never come close to. Exactly my opinion. Always thought I didn't need a console since a good PC can do the same and even better... But the Wii has got me wrong. No PC has such controller. Now I wanna be one of those idiots doing funny moves in front of their TVs !
  15. Please don't make this a "dual-core/dual-proc good or bad?" thread again. Better start a new topic for that. Here, we're trying to find solutions to get recent hardware capable of running Win98. So quadruple-core hardware with SLI nobody can afford anyway is not really what we're after. :
  16. Well, a Hard disk is mechanical so if it happens to fail, there's not much you can do about it (do you hear weird noises?). Sometimes heat causes problems (that would explain why it takes a few minutes to crash), sometimes it's just incompatible with others HDD. Or it's just breaking slowly... The best thing to do would be to try it on an other PC and see what happens. Anyway, if you took it off you should be safe.
  17. lol... I didn't think anyone could be THAT stupid. And believe knowing the real world... Please tell me "that" doesn't vote...
  18. Well well well... Officialy the motherboard doesn't support Win98. But the Xpress 200 chipset is supported by 6.2 Catalyst as it was said some time ago. The southbridge is Uli so that should ensure compatibility too. The audio chipset (Azalia) is a Realtek. They usualy make drivers for Win98 but this time it's a Vista ready crap. So no drivers. However, it's UAA based (universal audio architecture) and I myself got a UAA integrated sound card and it is recognized by 98 as USB audio and works without any added drivers. I don't know about the lan though and this mobo means PCI-e.
  19. Welcome Pixturesk ! Always nice to have more people here supporting Win98!!!
  20. If that helps you, all the files you mentionned reside in my Windows/system folder only.
  21. Difficult to find a benchmark comparing those two but knowing a 9800Pro is about as powerful as a 6600GT (talking about games in general). And that a 1650Pro is about as powerful as a 6600GT, you've got two cards that overall should theoricaly be the same. Except the 9800Pro is yesterday's high quality and 1650pro today's low quality. So the 9800 could have more brutal power compared to a 1650 which however supports modern technology (shaders...). Can't you order on the internet to have a larger choice?
  22. Stickers exist for foreign languages (well, here they do ). Try to buy a european language set. Here's an exemple: http://www.keyboard-stickers.com/clavier/index.html
  23. I've used Zonealarm for years on 98 and XP (I prefer the old versions though [v2.x]). Never had one problem on every PC it was installed (many). Your ports become stealthy and it gives you total control over outgoing connections. So basically, it does a perfect firewall job. Nothing ever went throught without permission. @Jeremy: Virtual Machines and net can cause problems so no reason to accuse ZA for that. It's hard to believe so many people don't use a firewall at all while there are so many good ones (this topic proves it!!). I mean, even if you're "safe" from the outside, you don't know what's connecting from the inside. And most software (not only viruses/trojans but almost everything) send data to unknow places if you don't stop them...
  24. Images in 98 Browseui are 16 pixels high (small icons) and 20 pixels high (big icons). In XP they're 16 pixels and 24 pixels high. So the small buttons look fine but you have to resize the bitmaps for large ones or use Tihiy's trick to modify buttons height : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=83500 But anyway, as there's no alpha-blend support, the buttons look bad when disabled. RP is the only solution to avoid that.
  25. That's what so cool in this forum. People come from all over the world ! Welcome IceSigil!
