  1. hey soporific, Autopatcher is a great piece of work - thanks for that! i've had some troubles with it and wonder if anyone can help... - i recently revived an old laptop (toshiba satellite 4030 cdt - celeron, 128 mb ram) with a new HDD and a fresh install of win98se - i started out with win98 first edition, but when i tried to install win98se over it, the install failed. so, i removed windows completely from the hard drive and installed win98se from scratch. then i downloaded autopatcher ver 1.95. the first thing i did was run the report to see what was missing. the report said that 142 (of the total 178) patches/hotfixes/etc. were not installed. i assume the rest were included as part of win98se?? - i configured autopatcher to install nearly all of the available fixes. after i ran it, i reran the report, and it showed 108 fixes were not installed, and 40 fixes were successfully installed (108+40=148 vs. 142 reported by the log - math doesn't quite add up here ??). i've since done some manual installs to get IE up to 6.0 SP1 and fix the windows update bug. - i was disappointed to see that the win98-to-me update didn't install - of the fixes that WERE installed, WinMP 9 doesn't work (double click on icon, nothing happens). my main questions are: 1. should i run autopatcher again? 2. how do i fix the WinMP 9 install? 3. how do i get it to install the missing patches, especially the win98-to-me? 4. should i uninstall autopatcher, reinstall and rerun? 5. will autopatcher 1.96 address these issues? thanks in advance for any help/advice! ps - the log file is posted below - remember the 1st log report is BEFORE i ran autopatcher, the 2nd one is after... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Report for Auto-Patcher v1.95 Preview Release 2 generated on Wednesday, 11 April 2007 - the time is now: 3:31am - the most recent report is at the end of this log file. 2. Thanks for posting georg & doc365a, and apologies to the rest for being snippy - bad hair day yesterday. my main interest in 98SE is it appears most of the security fixes, patches, updates, etc. are for SE only. all of the unofficial goodies on this site are also SE only. i probably wouldn't care, except my son will probably want to get on the 'net someday. we have a home network w/ hardware firewall, but i'd still prefer to have each pc on the network as up-to-date as possible as far as security goes. i'm still digging around the web looking for non-shady places to get 98SE. if i find it, i'll post the link...
  3. Ok, let me restate my problem, since it seems to have gotten lost: - I have the backup CDs for Win98 First Edition that was installed on an old Toshiba laptop. - I've been able to use those CDs to install a fresh copy of Win98 First Edition on a new, 100 GB hard drive - I'm now looking for some way to upgrade, update, or whatever, to Win98 Second Edition So, suggestions like looking on the backup CDs for the .cabs, asking M$ for their help, etc. - I don't think that does me any good. The .cabs on the backup CDs are FIRST EDITION - I need Second Edition. M$ is surely not going to help anyone to remain stuck in the past, especially since they discontinued support for Win9x over a year ago, etc., etc... Forgive my frustration folks, but please reread the original post so your reply is relevant. Looks like my only choice is ebay or a swap meet. Flame away...
  4. Not to be ungrateful, but I can't find any advice on whether, and in what order, to install these upgrades you guys have worked so hard to produce: 98 SE SP 2.1a (Gape) Auto-patcher for Win98SE (soporific) Windows 9x Power Pack v4.x (jimmsta) 98 Revolutions Pack (Tihiy) Major questions are: (1) Should I install all of these? (2) Isn't there some overlap in what they provide? (3) Does that matter? (4) If I do install more than one of them, does the order matter? Thanks. Help is much appreciated...
  5. Funny, I agree with both eleventhcmd and BenoitRen - I think it could run XP, but it may be excruciatingly slow. Right now with a fresh win98 install and a new, fast hard drive, the old girl is pretty da*n fast. The other issue is it will be loaded with old games, some of which may not run on XP. I don't know of any way to be sure except to try it, which means buying an XP upgrade that I may never use. Agree it would be an expensive test. I guess I could use the XP upgrade on another aging machine in the basement. Anyway, thanks for the advice folks. I'll repost when I've found a solution...
  6. not really interested in seedy p2p. linux is not a good fit for this one, it's for my son (2nd grade), primarily for him to learn typing & some mindless kiddie games (most are hand-me down win98 games, circa 2000). i might dual boot it with a linux distro just for fun, then see how that develops.
  7. actually, i DO have a CD, it's the backup CD for Win98 First Edition, which is what came preloaded on the computer. what i'm looking for is a retail upgrade (or full version) of Win98 Second Edition. Pretty sure there's no place to download the whole OS, only service packs & patches, etc.
  8. A little update. I wasn't able to get the cloning operation to work - I tried using xxclone, but it couldn't find a source OR target drive. Eventually, I punted and tried to restore to the new hard disk from the backup CDs. Turns out that worked, it just wouldn't boot because I forgot to make the partition active when I formatted it. So, I booted to a floppy and ran FDISK to set the partition active. Then rebooted to the hard drive, and all was well (sort of). The restore process finished after I rebooted. In hindsight, maybe xxclone failed because the target partition wasn't active, so it couldn't find more than one drive? Although it has an option to make the target bootable... So, now I have a fresh copy of Win98 on the new hard disk, but with no updates, bug fixes, patches, etc. Still looking for SE, but I'm not eager to go ebay. That may be my only choice, or give in to the dark side and try XP... Edit - forgot to mention I formatted the drive using the updated Win98 FDISK (the one that correctly recognizes partitions larger than 64GB). Worked like a charm, but sloooow. Only hitch was the set active thing, but probably my fault :-)
  9. Well, I'm trying to resurrect an old Toshiba laptop for my son (2nd grader). It's sloow, but built like a tank (Satellite 4030CDT). Anyway, the hard drive is maxed out, so I bought a new one (100 GB for only about 75 bucks). That's way more than it needs to be, but I figured when the laptop finally croaks, I can make the HDD into an external USB drive for backup. So, the machine came with Win98 (NOT Win98SE). I tried to clone the old HDD onto the new one, but it failed. The new drive is partitioned and formatted, and is supposed to be bootable, but it won't actually boot! I also tried to restore to the new drive from the backup CDs that came with the laptop, but that didn't work either. Question is, anybody know where I can buy an actual copy of Win98SE? I was thinking of just installing a fresh copy of Win98 from scratch. Called a few stores today and they all kinda laughed. Any help is appreciated...
