  3. I recently ditched Firefox because it quit running without additional runtimes that I'm not going to install on my system and it is heavy and buggy , I am now a 360 user . The best browser so far. It just runs ! It doesn't want a couple of gigs of redist packages (bloatware). I absolutely don't care if all firefox browsers , including this one , will cease to exist . They had their chance . Now start to downvote me.

  4. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think more or less everyone with any interest in this latest round of the drama is already pretty exhausted from reading and talking about it, be it here or elsewhere. My idea was that since these browser threads here are really intended to be about development and support, any future upstream drama related discussion can be taken to the drama thread, so it doesn't take over this one the way it has occasionally happened in the past.

  5. As I'm sure you realise, English is not @heinoganda's first language, and many of their posts are therefore a bit strangely worded and need a bit of interpretation! I will add the note about Vista, but of course the tool was originally only intended for use on XP, where admin rights are not an issue. I've also reworded the section you mention to make it clearer (I don't know what "loud" was supposed to be either!) I hope what it says is now correct!

  6. Modern browsers work on Windows 98 as per the first post. Read the hard work put in by other members to find out how to do it.

  7. I'm sorry, you're telling me I should read 23 pages of discussion instead of asking for a simple two-line summary for what's the latest browsers I can run and what I need to install for them? I read most of the thread and I have absolutely no idea what's going on q.q PS: Not a fan of cliché philosophy quotes.

  8. Hi guys! I have solved this issue without having to do a recovery.... Firstly...I swore some time ago I would never let Microsoft support in another customer computer....- but I was a little desperate for answers.... I will add it was a waste of time and he came up with what others have said a partial recovery- but I wasn't having any of that and thanked him and went back to the drawing board... I tried once more with the following: sfc /scannow dism /online /cleanup-image /scannhealth dism /online /cleanup-image /restorhealth Had no errors and rebooted - but the same problem remained....couldn't find any upgrade on window update... I did one final check... I right clicked on drive to do disk-cleanup and then cleanup-system files... When I looked in the list there was old image files....I removed them and cleaned up windows update directory and rebooted... I clicked on Windows update and this time 20H2 came up and has installed with all updates....no sign of 21H1 but that isn't a problem Now it could be that the customer missed an error on upgrading and it caused the problem because there were already system problems...no point in speculating now...it works! I am not sure this will help any others in the same boat....just wanted to say it is solved. bookie32

  11. Same here, @Mr.Scienceman2000. A LOT of folks here at MSFN like to post YouTube "content" and I always just get gigantic empty space because I do not allow YouTube content unless the domain I am on is YouTube. So my Stylus kills the gigantic empty space and I just read on past it, "Not worth seeing if it's an embedded YouTube on a non-YouTube domain."

  12. Are you planning use it on laptop or desktop? If answer is laptop I know one model that will work under Windows 98SE. I have not found driver yet, but it listed Windows 98SE as offically supported. I got one of them and model is Sony Ericson GC85 Edge card. It is triple band so as long as Poland (if flag is right) got 900 or 1800 or 1900mhz band for GSM it will work just fine. Another on go soluction is depending your wireless handheld telephone device (phone in short) is to use it as modem. Atleast older Siemens and Nokia phones until around 2004 or so had offical modem drivers for Windows 98SE. Depending model can use either IR, bluetooth (if got 9x compatible bt card) or data cable. They can generally achieve 43-100kbp/s speed which is not fastest, but fine for me on a road. Here operator killed older UTMS bands and in two years rest of UTMS bands are closed. Next goes 2g I guess and that point Finland which used to country highly developed in mobile technology will roll back to era where most had no phones. That point I may redirect all of my calls to answer machine that says. "Unfortunately person you tried to reach cannot use his phone because operator shut down GSM band and does not offer him landline. If you want contact owner of the number, please first call to operator number and tell them how stupid decision was to kill essential services." Also edge/gprs speed is not that slow depending how you tweak your software. I use email over IMAP with offline folders, use WTTR.IN to check weather, block js by default. On road edge/gprs works just fine. Back in day before web turned to bloat 100kb/s was luxury I did not have

  13. Thanks for all responses. An old workplace didn't provide system admin rights, when working on the road i would bring small games that didn't need installation. My faster Windows 98 install @Mr.Scienceman2000 uses NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400 (64 MB AGP, Forceware v71.84) and DirectX9.0c. Basic tests like DirectDraw and Direct3D are good, the system runs stable. No games installed yet. So @j7n you're then having to manually modify the registry for true bold. If you later use DisplaySet again to save changes then your preferred registry tweaks get reverted? Maybe i'm misunderstanding, nobody called 'computer programs viruses'? I indicated above viruses for these old systems may no longer exist in the wild. Some time ago i referenced modern Firefox as being spyware (IMHO). This is not the same as calling it a virus. Nor is referencing a single application the same as calling all 'computer programs' viruses. Regardless, people have good reason to be apprehensive about using systems online, so many examples making the news. Maybe you've been fortunate, through diligence or luck. In regards to the Firefox spyware reference, for example: https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/firefox.html Open an old browser, like RetroZilla based on SeaMonkey v1. In about:config filter 'http' and you get nothing. Newer Firefox releases have dozens of HTTP entries (calling home) but they've removed the ability to filter search 'http' and toggle view (eg. default/modified), why? Well then just filter search 'google', that trusted, cuddly company with your best interests in mind, example: browser.safebrowsing.provider.google.advisoryURL https://developers.google.com/safe-browsing/v4/advisory These are URLs built into Firefox's code, you won't see this in lean, calm browsers like Dillo or Links. Or just patiently scroll all about:config, hiding in plain site. Personally i don't feel safer (Safebrowsing) knowing Google is using telemetry while banking. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mozilla.lockbox&referrer=utm_source%3Dprotection_report%26utm_content%3Dmobile_promotion https://apps.apple.com/app/id1314000270 https://www.mozilla.org/%LOCALE%/firefox/geolocation/ https://www.youtube.com/,https://www.facebook.com/,https://www.reddit.com/,https://www.wikipedia.org/,https://www.amazon.ca/,https://twitter.com/ https://incoming.telemetry.mozilla.org/submit/sslreports/ Sites like ghacks exist because Firefox's default configuration is not as safe and secure as advertised. https://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/18/a-comprehensive-list-of-firefox-privacy-and-security-settings/ A service does not need to be running, referencing backdoors, just a connection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backdoor_(computing) Intel Management Engine (ME), just one example, there are also lots of software backdoors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Management_Engine - The ME always runs as long as the motherboard is receiving power. - The ME is an attractive target for hackers, since it has top level access to all devices and completely bypasses the operating system. - The ME itself is built into all Intel chipsets since 2008, not only those with AMT. - The subsystem primarily consists of proprietary firmware running on a separate microprocessor that performs tasks during boot-up, while the computer is running, and while it is asleep. - Intel claims the ME is required to provide full performance. Its exact workings are largely undocumented and its code is obfuscated using confidential Huffman tables stored directly in hardware, so the firmware does not contain the information necessary to decode its contents. - The ME has its own MAC and IP address for the out-of-band interface, with direct access to the Ethernet controller; one portion of the Ethernet traffic is diverted to the ME even before reaching the host's operating system, for what support exists in various Ethernet controllers, exported and made configurable via Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP). The ME also communicates with the host via PCI interface. - Several weaknesses have been found in the ME. In May 2017, Intel confirmed that many computers with AMT have had an unpatched critical privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2017-5689). The vulnerability, which was nicknamed "Silent Bob is Silent" by the researchers who had reported it to Intel, affects numerous laptops, desktops and servers sold by Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard (later Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc.), Intel, Lenovo, and possibly others. - "Full control of affected machines, including the ability to read and modify everything. It can be used to install persistent malware (possibly in firmware), and read and modify any data." - Tatu Ylönen, ssh.com - In 20 November, 2017 Intel confirmed that a number of serious flaws had been found in the ME, Trusted Execution Engine (tablet/mobile), and Server Platform Services (high end server) firmware, and released a "critical firmware update". - Essentially every Intel-based computer for the last several years, including most desktops and servers, were found to be vulnerable to having their security compromised, although all the potential routes of exploitation were not entirely known. - Critics like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Libreboot developers, and security expert Damien Zammit accused the ME of being a backdoor and a privacy concern. Zammit stresses that the ME has full access to memory (without the owner-controlled CPU cores having any knowledge), and has full access to the TCP/IP stack and can send and receive network packets independently of the operating system, thus bypassing its firewall. - In the context of criticism of the Intel ME and AMD Secure Technology it has been pointed out that the National Security Agency (NSA) budget request for 2013 contained a Sigint Enabling Project with the goal to "Insert vulnerabilities into commercial encryption systems, IT systems, …" and it has been conjectured that Intel ME and AMD Secure Technology might be part of that program. - As of 2017, Google was attempting to eliminate proprietary firmware from its servers and found that the ME was a hurdle to that. Like the example above, software firewalls can be bypassed, and most users don't own (ie. have full control) over their network router either, typically provided by their ISP.

  14. @Dixel Try using Wget directly to download the files with the links provided by @Ben Markson You can set Wget to use proxy settings: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/11211705/how-to-set-proxy-for-wget#11211812 https://superuser.com/questions/526710/how-to-set-http-proxy-address-for-wget-under-windows#526779 Try something in the CMD like --> "wget use_proxy=yes http_proxy=127.0.0.1:8080 http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authroots.sst" Maybe that could help. Cheers.

  15. Yes, DirectX9 is miserable. It even breaks audio/video quality on Vista and W7 ! Most good games do not need that DX9 redist. package anyways. And if some game wants it , just put the wanted DLL in the game folder , problem solved.

  17. I used to say Windows 10 is worst Microsoft operating system, but I have to take my word back, Windows 11 way worse . I did more testing with it more on my isolated lab network (Yes I highly trust new MS products). It is pain to configure for deployment. Yet have not found way to configure start menu template properly. Was way easier on classic start menu since mostly needed drop files to sample user folder on image or server. ADMX templates on servers need to be replaced. Also I do not like built in android emulator, because it may take developement away from win32 and 64 (or appx if someone even uses that). When Microsoft will enable it somepoint I really hope they add GPO option to disable it (more replacing files on server yey!). And worst of all it feels like running Windows 95 on 386 with 4mb ram despite test hardware is fast enough (ryzen 5 3600). I keep having high cpu usage from edge. And do not get me started on Windows 365. It is like returning to terminal era where all client systems were dumb terminals connected into company mainframe that generally was leased off big company like Digital or IBM that charged per cpu cycle at worst. I really really hope my or other workplaces wont get it. I see huge security risk on that too. Imagine your hard drive being on cloud and then someone hacks that service and downloads all of virtual disks. There goes trade secrets and others. I really wish could have had something positive to say, but Microsoft did not learn anything from Windows 8 or Windows 10 and future of computing looks dark . Well since it will be shoved down everyone throat who works on IT (or anything with computers) without questioning, time to start testing deployments. I have not tested, but pretty sure using bios will fail on MDT since Windows 11 needs uefi. Then test automated installations and other things.

  19. No,it won't work anyway, my time machine works quite fine but of course you cannot take anything ferromagnetic with you due to the nature of the fields used whenever proto-tunnelling warps are involved . Maybe, in the future the approach may become useful to source good ol' SSD's ... jaclaz
