  1. Update notification! As already reported here, the Root Certificates have been updated and are now from 28-11-2023. Here is a screenshot: Therefore, my self-created, offline Root Certificate Updaters in the section 11.2.4. Downloads related to Root Certificate Updates (in the first post of this thread) will also be updated as soon as possible. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  2. Yes, you're right, I also have the piece of garbage Asus on that rig, with Fujitsu Siemens Haswel board it happened very rarely, but still happened, annoying. Looks like China made boards simply use cheaper timers, seems like a plausible explanation.

  3. No BSOD, no performance drop, but black screen of death, right at the start with anything after RTM, SP2 with updates especially! Only hard reset! With RTM it was a delayed or never started service/services, most common: audio service or some other services like "licensing". Black screen of death also happened with RTM, but rarely, and it could be bypassed via task manager.

  11. ... Not all Google Search results offer the "cached" version feature ; as for NM28 with "the" SSUAO, I did a test right now and can't confirm your finding ... The "modern" GS GUI loaded alright, I searched for "xenon fluoride": the "about this result" popup to the right (for the first result) has a footer with a "cached version" button, that leads to, er, a cached version of the result, with the proviso it hasn't expired by the time you asked for it (the specific example in the screenshot now returns a 404 ...): FWIW, in NM28 I've noticed that the popup has the word "beta" in its header, whereas in Kafan MiniBrowser (I'm writing this on ) the popup is quite different, supposedly it's the one you yourself get with Mypal68 ... ... As you said, the "legacy" format is much more lenient to older, under-resourced, H/W XP users are likely to be running the UXP browser(s) on ; one thing I still like about the old format is that it's kept the "pagination" feature in result pages (look for it at the bottom of the page, i.e. "Next" -> "< Page 2 >" -> "<< < Page 3 >" etc.), while the "modern" format has now permanently switched to "more results/infinite scrolling" ; BTW, while the true UXP-based browsers have no issue with that, Serpent 55 is BROKEN in this regard ; STR: in St55, apply the SSUAO that enables the "modern" GS GUI; search for a term that is likely to generate a lot of results; as you scroll the results page down and have almost reached its end, a rotating circle will briefly appear but no additional results will be displayed; thus, in St55, you are limited to the first 10 results the "modern" GUI will offer ; pinging @Mathwiz and @roytam1 ...

  13. I updated my lists in the second and fourth post of this thread. Then I downloaded the most recent Avast VPS update for versions 9 to 11 which can be found here: https://install.avcdn.net/ivps9x/vpsupd.exe I compared this file to the one from 16.10.2023, and both are identical. Since the middle of October, the Avast VPS offline updater for versions 9 to 11 wasn't renewed anymore. Thus, I have to say: Avast 2015, rest in peace!

The only information I need is their email address and username that they'd like to use. If you can talk to this person and get that info, you can PM it to me and I can make the account.

  21. The "ALL" is just passed to bcdboot.exe, which than creates BIOS and UEFI boot files. If it does not boot in UEFI mode, than either the boot partition is ignored (maybe it's NTFS) or the UEFI is a bit picky and does not look for the EFI boot loader on a MBR disk. If the UEFI allows it, try to start the loader manually: \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi @dimo70 Yes just use WinNTSetup to apply the backuped WIM, it will change drive letter assignment and create a new boot entry.

  24. Thanks for checking. Here's a screenshot of the popup I was getting (it contained more content accessible with the mouse wheel, but a "cached" link/button was nowhere to be found). Turns out the problem was cookie cruft: prompted by your post, I tried deleting all cookies containing "google", and now I'm also getting the "beta" popup with the "cached" button (which is what I was getting in Mypal 68). Good points. No disagreement from me. I may end up changing my mind and switching back to the "legacy" interface myself, though the features/functionality offered by the "modern" one are useful at times. Though I guess I could pull up Mypal and get to it there on the occasions I needed it... I need to work harder at minimizing my use of Google (with its user tracking/data mining) anyway. DuckDuckGo is okay, but its results sometimes don't catch things Google does, and its regular interface doesn't split the results into separate pages either (though like Google, it does at least currently allow one to switch off the dreadful automatic loading/"infinite scroll"); its "HTML" and "Lite" interfaces do, but are also stripped-down in functionality. One search engine I keep forgetting to use is Startpage, which delivers Google results (that they pay Google to use) without the tracking; I just tried it, and am pleased to report it still uses traditional pagination.

  26. Another way: once you have already set up your search engines the way you want, you can copy and save somewhere the file youprofile/search.json.mozlz4 and later on, routinely, replace the one in your polluted profile. That way, you will always have them as you want them. The same applies to sp52, and you may in fact use your already sp52 profile/search.json.mozlz4 in mypal. The issue with mojeek and brave is more complicated, because mypal installs them from yourprofile/extensions.json. As described before in this forum, you need to open this extensions.json file, and delete the items to prevent them from reappearing. PS: two caveats. 1) When copying your archived use ready search.json.mozlz4 you are likely to need to go to prefs and reassign your default search engine. Otherwise, GG (oh surprise) takes over. 2) the text for mojeek and brave in extensions.json will have changes in uid, as per your installation, so copy and paste over won't do the trick. you will have to find the code, and delete it manually)

  32. @dmiranda The solution to let the custom button aboutbutton recognise by the CSS stylesheet buttons_on_navbar_button_roundness.css is a bit more complicated than I thought. You have indeed to change the code of the script aboutbutton.uc.js. It seems to be a class issue. This is the first part of the original script code from line 1 to 26: (function() { if (location != 'chrome://browser/content/browser.xul') return; try { CustomizableUI.createWidget({ id: 'about-toolbarbutton', type: 'custom', defaultArea: CustomizableUI.AREA_NAVBAR, onBuild: function(aDocument) { var toolbaritem = aDocument.createElementNS('http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul', 'toolbarbutton'); var attrs = { id: 'about-toolbarbutton', class: 'chromeclass-toolbar-additional', type: 'menu', removable: true, label: 'about Seiten öffnen', tooltiptext: 'about Seiten öffnen' }; for (var a in attrs) toolbaritem.setAttribute(a, attrs[a]); return toolbaritem; } }); } catch(e) { }; I changed the class of this button in line 15 from 'chromeclass-toolbar-additional' to 'toolbarbutton-1 chromeclass-toolbar-additional': (function() { if (location != 'chrome://browser/content/browser.xul') return; try { CustomizableUI.createWidget({ id: 'about-toolbarbutton', type: 'custom', defaultArea: CustomizableUI.AREA_NAVBAR, onBuild: function(aDocument) { var toolbaritem = aDocument.createElementNS('http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul', 'toolbarbutton'); var attrs = { id: 'about-toolbarbutton', class: 'toolbarbutton-1 chromeclass-toolbar-additional', type: 'menu', removable: true, label: 'about Seiten öffnen', tooltiptext: 'about Seiten öffnen' }; for (var a in attrs) toolbaritem.setAttribute(a, attrs[a]); return toolbaritem; } }); } catch(e) { }; This change seems to be enough to let the CSS stylesheet buttons_on_navbar_button_roundness.css recognise the custom button aboutbuttuon as a standard toolbar button. Thus, the button can be rounded by this CSS stylesheet. Here is a screenshot to show the result of my change (I added borders around the buttons via CSS code for better visibility ): The positive side effect of this modification is that the custom button aboutbuttuon behaves as a normal toolbar button from now on, even if it is not rounded off by such a CSS stylesheet. Cheers, AstroSkipper

  33. I already posted the meaning of the error code 0x800706B5: Check if there are problems in your system with the event log service! @WSC4 As far as I understand your error code, the service BITS fails to start because the Eventlog service is not running. Check both services! Are they set to start automatically (auto)? BITS is definitely needed for MU/WU and has to be working correctly. And keep in mind, my guide was generally written for Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit. But there were members like, for example, @maile3241 who got MU/WU running under Windows XP 64-bit using ProxHTTPSProxyMII 1.3a in the past. Whether it is still working in these days or not, I really don't know. If you can't fix it and all fails, you should give another method a try.

  41. Unfortunately, a lot of problems. No space for additional PCI cards. Quality of IDE-SATA adapters, lack of space, compatibility problems, IRQ incompatibilities and so on. I've already bought IDE-SATA adapters and expansion cards, but I'm happy if my old computer doesn't need any further modification. This cheap electronic stuff has burnt me out before. I am not really a friend of such adapters.

  42. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as you describe here. You can't buy a new PATA meaning an IDE hard disk anymore, and that for years. They are not produced anymore. In old systems, there is no SATA controller or can no longer be retrofitted so easily. Old systems lack of PCIe slots, they have PCI only. Therefore, it could be important to maintain and take care of old IDE hard disks and their data as long as possible.
