In Windows XP you need a dedicated tool (shell extension), the one that works (I am running it since many years) is this one: Background Command: http://www.roggel.com/NGNeer/BackgroundCMD/index.shtml It provides a proper "command prompt here" (unlike other "solutions" that offer "command prompt in the selected directory"). jaclaz4 points

@AstroSkipper Take it easy. Using another tool instead of Explorer (like you do with Total Commander) is of course perfectly fine, I only posted a reference to a tool that is useful when running Explorer, working "correctly" unlike the very common suggested workarounds, like these ones: https://petri.com/add_command_prompt_here_shortcut_to_windows_explorer/ that are described as "command prompt here" while they are actually "command prompt in the selected directory". jaclaz2 points

Agreed, not big on large context menus. I prefer Directory Opus on the home computer and Q-Dir on the office computer. I've used Total Commander, XYplorer, and Explorer++ and they're all way better than Windows Explorer. DirOpus wasn't free though. I used to own an Amiga and I've been a DirOpus user ever since ('92ish?).1 point

Here is a quotation from BackgroundCMD's website: Your "proper" "command prompt here" does nothing different from Total Commander's "solution" "Open command prompt window". I personally do not use the Windows Explorer for file management but Total Commander. And I don't like too much unnecessary entries in the context menu. Therefore, I can't see why such a solution is not as proper as yours. I think the following rule applies: AstroSkipper1 point

But on Vista you probably want one that is compatible with UAC (not tested by me): http://code.kliu.org/cmdopen/ jaclaz1 point

... And why would you "fear" that? Why, OTOH, didn't you "fear" that something had gone wrong on box's side ? If it wasn't immediately obvious, no wrong doing on "your part" was implied/insinuated; I posted the "Sorry..." box screengrab as an indication that at the time I tried to fetch that file (thanks ), I was met with that box response ... Sure enough, currently (ca. 15:40 GMT) the page loads as expected and the download button(s) works, too (screengrab from St52):1 point

Something has been going on with Windows Defender update. Today was the first time in 6 days that I have been able to update Definitions, and that required 2 attempts on the Desktop computer. I was able to update the Laptop computer on the first attempt through Windows Update.1 point

Right! This function does not exist in Windows XP SP3 natively but in Total Commander. You can easily open a CMD window in whatever folder you want by clicking onto the entry Open command prompt window. It is located under the menu bar item Commands.1 point

... I often do that myself when I have to batch-change file extensions inside a directory, however it won't help me much when needing to change something in the actual filenames ; and one other thing: the functionality you described in the first line requires at least Windows Vista, as it's not present by default in Windows XP SP3; I have seen, though, over the years, some .reg files or other utilities intended for XP that try to emulate it; e.g. https://techjourney.net/add-open-command-window-here-to-windows-xp-folder-with-powertoy/ https://petri.com/add_command_prompt_here_shortcut_to_windows_explorer/ [Use at your own risk! Have not tried myself...] Regards.1 point

Or simply hold shift, right click inside the folder - open CMD here ren * *.jpg (or any other extension)1 point

IIRC the is 2038 issue effects all systems that use the 4-byte integer for time with a start date of 1/1/1970, including the previously mentioned Unix. I do not know of a full list of OSes (and hardware) that have this issue but I doubt WinME will be any sort of priority. Presumably it could also effect any system with a clock that has a year, like maybe a VCR. So now consider what types of non-computers that exist in the commercial or industrial space that could potentially have this problem.1 point

In my case, Panda was removed by performing a factory restore after it bricked not only me but thousands of other users: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31851125 That was quite some time ago, but Malwarebytes 1.75 was already 2 years old and I had moved on to 2.x versions. Your biggest fan is actually a Vista user who I believe cares more about your politics than security software. I am genuinely interested in the software and would not write at length about a program that I never used.1 point

No, speaking of "groups", you are very selective to whom you admonish. UCyborg is a tech savvy guy, I'm sure he wouldn't have a slightest problem with just a link, without several A4 sheets of reply accompanied it.1 point

Resource leak detected. See a bunch of "D3D9Window" windows? I guess new one is created every time a D3D9 Device must be recovered. Two ways I can reproduce this: Minimize the browser, launch any proper 3D game (that uses Direct3D or OpenGL for rendering). Disable or enable one of the monitors. Restore the browser window afterwards. That's on latest and greatest Serpent 52.1 point

Where were you before!? I'm on iPhone with the iOS 15.6 update, and it feels slow, indeed!1 point

I agree with Jody, 12 is rather good! Just don't upgrade any further on the old devices, like this one is really slow. 4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 15.7.7 & 11 Reasons Published 3 days ago on 06/30/2023By Adam Mills Apple’s iOS 15.7.7 update could have a huge impact on your iPhone’s performance. While most users should install the firmware right now, others are better off waiting a few hours or perhaps even a few more days before upgrading from older iOS software. iOS 15.7.7 is the latest iOS 15 upgrade for iPhone and it’s available to download right now if you own an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, or iPhone 7 Plus. The software’s not available for newer iPhones. The iOS 15.7.7 update is a minor release, but it brings important security patches to these iPhone models. It doesn’t have any new features or bug fixes on board. https://www.gottabemobile.com/4-reasons-not-to-install-ios-15-11-reasons-you-should/1 point

Hello @Mark-XP! Sorry for the late reply! I totally overviewed this. I managed to get the "Alternating row highlighting" working in MailNews right away without any problems. So what is your problem in detail? For me, it works like a charm. Here is a small screenshot from my MailNews client: Greetings from Germany,1 point

To force the installer of DreamMail Pro 6.6.6.2 to use English instead of Chinese as the installer language, I updated my small loader that does this when it calls up the setup program. It must be executed in the same directory in which the setup file is located with its original file name dmpro_setup6.6.6.2.exe. Here is the download link of my loader Force_En_Install_DM_Pro_6662.exe: https://www.mediafire.com/file/6byu8gx1g996m3r/Force_En_Install_DM_Pro_6662.7z/file Although some virus scanners detect this file as malicious, it is just a false-positive as always. Use my loader to force an English install, only if you trust me, of course! Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

A small update information! DreamMail Pro is now available in version 6.6.6.2.1 point

That's correct. Only username and password is not sufficient anymore. The email client has to support OAuth2 or app password to access a Google account. Gmail's web interface still works with username and password, of course. And Android's Gmail app works without any problems if the user has logged in their Google account. I mention this as I am an Android user for nearly ten years. Windows XP and Android (and rather rarely Linux) are my main OSs. For example, DreamMail Pro (I wrote about this email client in some previous posts) also works with Gmail under Windows XP, but only via app password, at least in the version 6.6.5.9. No real OAuth2. MailNews supports a real OAuth2. It opens an own window to allow access to your Google account. No app password needed.1 point

As promised, some further information about MailNews. It's now my standard email client in Windows XP. All my email service providers are supported by MailNews. I talk about GMX, WEB.DE, Gmail and Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail, now the light web version of Microsoft 365). It works without any problems, simply great. Here are some screenshots from my installation: I installed a lot of extensions from both Binary Outcast and Thunderbird.net, without any modifications, no editing of install.rdf, right out of the box. Furthermore, I activated the embedded calendar Lightning. I am very happy with MailNews, no cumbersome and heavy loading web interfaces anymore. This means I can fully recommend MailNews. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

The last XP-compatible version 7.2.35595.0 of eM Client Pro is much too old. It does not do anything. No access to my email service providers. This version is nearly four years old and that's definitely too much for an email client nowadays. Anyway! MailNews is my best choice on Windows XP and works perfectly with all of my email service providers. The browser's web interfaces of my email accounts are heavy on loading and sluggish, and a lot of them work only in a restricted mode.1 point

Actually, I wanted to test the email client OE Classic, but ads in outgoing messages and the limit of only two accounts in their free version are a no-go. That's why I tested IceDove, but unfortunately, it doesn't support OAuth2 or authentication by app password which means no access to Gmail by this email client. That is a pity and therefore not an option for me. But another candidate has long since appeared on the horizon that meets and even exceeds all my requirements. And that is @roytam1's email client MailNews, which is ultimately based on Thunderbird 52. This email client has a real, working Oauth2 protocol that makes accessing Gmail easy. For me, simply perfect and the best choice for Windows XP at the moment.. More about that in the next days! Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

I installed the last XP-compatible version of eM Client (eM Client Pro 7.2.35595.0) on my system in 2019. It's a fully licensed version. I think it won't work properly with Gmail due to its age, but I didn't try it. It needs ProxHTTPSProxy to look for updates (using IE engine!). No good! Simply too old! The current release of eM Client is 9.2.1577.0 and of course not compatible with Windows XP. For more recent OSs, it is supposed to be a good email client, though. PS: I tested eM Client Pro 7.2.35595.0, it no longer works properly in Windows XP, not even with the simple email service WEB.DE. Uninstalled.1 point

To force the installer of DreamMail Pro 6.6.5.9 to use English instead of Chinese as the installer language, I created a small loader that does this when it calls up the setup program. It must be executed in the same directory in which the setup file is located with its original file name dmpro_setup6.6.5.9.exe. Here is the download link of my loader: https://www.mediafire.com/file/4bh4pybunlmr5hq/ForceEnInstall.7z/file Although some virus scanners detect this file as malicious, it is just a false-positive as always. Use my loader to force an English install, only if you trust me, of course! Cheers, AstroSkipper I installed DreamMail Pro with my self-created loader to force an installation in English (default is Chinese) which worked fine. I tested DreamMail Pro wth two email services, WEB.DE and Gmail. The configuration of WEB.DE was easy and works as expected. The configuration of Gmail was a bit tricky. DreamMail Pro can only work with Gmail if the two factor authentication has been enabled in its account settings to get and use an app password. DreamMail Pro doesn't seem to provide a real Oauth2 protocol as MailNews does. But it works with Gmail, too. The documentation is only available in Chinese (for non-Chinese people not easy, you need Google Translator). The automatical creation of message folders and their handling by DreamMail Pro has definitely to be improved in the next releases.1 point
