Just as an off-topic aside, on Windows 98 I'm still running an ancient Trend Micro antivirus program wonderfully named 'PC-cillin' from 2002. It stopped getting automatic updates over ten years ago, but I can still manually download and install the pattern files even after all that time, which I do every week. As long as the format of the pattern files does not change of course, there's no reason why you can't do that indefinitely.4 points

In other news, you're right, reading through that Malwarebytes forum has a lot of XP Hate. Only makes me stick to my guns and use XP all the more. Some form of "reverse psychology", if one truly wants to rid the world of XP, caps, or BOLD, tell everyone how much you LOVE it and then they won't dig in their heals. Clique this. Click that.3 points

The programme Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is great piece of software. Although the old versions have slightly worse detection rates than some other programmes of this type, they run perfectly under Windows XP. I've written two detailed articles about different versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in this thread now, and I've only spread positive things. And what do you read about it in the Malwarebytes forum? The guy who posted this is one of many on the Malwarebytes forum who, for whatever reason, hate Windows XP or Windows Vista and their users. Instead of being happy that their programme is appreciated and maintained, only snide remarks, ridicule and scorn. This guy should be so ashamed of himself. (Edit: In the meanwhile, he offered me his apology, which I accepted. ) I am also a member of this "friendly" forum, and I've been really upset with this forum for a long time now, which is not doing a good service to the Malwarebytes product and potential users. A few months ago, I had a bad experience myself in this forum and spoke plainly. I reported about it in the old antivirus thread. Here is the relevant thread from the Malwarebytes forum: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/296406-windows-xp-does-not-have-lifetime-support/#comment-1561223 Anyway! Here, you can read my reply to this nice comment: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/262745-definition-updates-failing-v17501300/?do=findComment&comment=1578365 Cheers, AstroSkipper3 points

If this was manual deletion, it may be a problem that cannot be easily solved. If you made a list of which files you replaced you may be able to revert. A repair install may be in order. This part of the OS is not redistributable. Since you have access to VMs, you could make a new one and install XP and IE6 and get the files yourself.2 points

That's absolutely correct! Another, nice example is SpywareBlaster 4.6 which was the last version compatible with Windows ME. Updating of the definition files stopped when the version 5.0 was released. The most recent version is 6.0. When updating the definition files in SpywareBlaster 6.0 under Windows XP, they can be used in the version 4.6 under Windows ME without any problems. BTW, SpywareBlaster is on my internal list, and I will write an article about it soon.2 points

That last post cites this -- "I have quoted exile360’s August 13, 2020 post above because I tend to agree with his opinion that current definitions cannot be expected to work effectively with a 10-year-old version of Malwarebytes, however I am not an expert on that myself." I have to agree. "Having" a definition created SEVERAL YEARS after the "engine" does not indicate that the engine KNOWS WHAT TO DO with that "definition". Caveat emptor!2 points

At least for 7 you can have the bootloader on floppy disk, if you want, still it would be BOOTMGR+BCD. Windows NT6+ can only be booted by BOOTMGR (or bootmgr.efi in case of EFI BIOS), which corresponds to NTLDR, the issue, as you highlighted, is managing the configuration file which is the BCD, which corresponds to the good ol', plain, boot.ini.. The BCD file is a binary (actually it is a Registry hive) and MS only provides (inconvenient/complex) command line tools to manage it. You actually need BOOTMGR and BCD, so you might want to look at (third party) tools that allow an easier editing/changing of the BCD. I can suggest you: Bootice http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=21956 Bellavista http://www.zezula.net/en/fstools/bellavista.html Visual BCD Editor https://www.boyans.net/ Lilo won't help you at all. Grub (now GRUB2) is (IMHO) overly complex, in case you want to make a "bridge" between your current NTLDR+BOOT.INI and the BOOTMGR+BCD of your new installs I suggest you to use grub4dos instead which is much simpler to install (or not install as it can be chainloaded from NTLDR+boot.ini). jaclaz2 points

Well good news or bad news ... over at the Malwarebytes forum dealing with v1.75.0.1300 ... someone is reporting about all this here at MSFN and v1.75.0.1300 able to get updates again. Nothing has been posted there for three years until 4 hours ago. https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/262745-definition-updates-failing-v17501300/ I wonder where all this will be going. The poster uses the term 'A couple of Windows XP diehards at the MSFN forum (their last stronghold)' ... doesn't sound too friendly. I hope doors won't be kicked in as these 'last Windows XP diehards' are hunted down and their computers are destroyed with sledge hammers. We shall see and I hope they won't stop future updates for v1.75.0.1300. Go to the last post.2 points

Unsure if it's a 23xxx problem or the SAB test build (using the one with the July 9 signature), but selecting "Pin to Start Menu" for an item in the Start Menu actually pins it to the taskbar instead, as if you chose "Pin to taskbar."1 point

Hi, I try to install fresh from my 200 Euro expensive original win10 Home version 1703 from March 2017, on my Asrock z370 k6 fatal1ty board. Crazy, install stops, because this original USB stick from Microsoft shows unreadable sectors. And it is write protected, so no chance for any repair. Nice from Microsoft. Ok, after crazy search for this 1703 german version of this win10, I find 15063.0.170710-1358.rs2_release_svc_refresh_clientcombined_ret_x64fre_de-de_d6cd31298648aab2ff081004ceff2ffceb7aab64.esd on Microsoft Servers. There is also a 32 bit version of this 1703 version in german 15063.0.170710-1358.rs2_release_svc_refresh_clientcombined_ret_x86fre_de-de_52c33a275f77116954abe5f508d1254a49f5fe20.esd Then I build from it via this tool an *.iso for 64 bit. esd-decrypter-wimlib-63 From this I get the *.iso 15063.0.170710-1358.RS2_RELEASE_SVC_REFRESH_CLIENTCOMBINED_OEMRET_X64FRE_DE-DE.ISO I make an bootable USB stick, using Rufus. And voila, there installs win10 home 1703 without any problems. At once I click on the nice file from @mjd79 wushowhide.diagcab and can select there, not to install win 10 22H2. And now, all my problems with crazy Updates for my compi are gone. Very interesting to know, how many millions of hours are gone thanks to Microsoft on this crazy crazy stupid Update behavior. For example, now all devices in Device Manager are correct installed. And the Update offers me also the Nvidia driver for my Nvidia 730, which was not shown in the "last" win10 version Dietmar1 point

The versions v1, v2 and v3 of Malwarebytes each have different formats in which the virus definitions are stored. Although MBAM v1 and v2 store the virus definitions in the file rules.ref, these files still differ. MBAM v3 has completely different files for storing virus definition called rules.mbdb, and additionally the files wprot.mbdb and wprot2.mbdb. In any case, their virus definitions cannot be exchanged among each other. Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

Hello to all! Last year, @cmalex had not only made available the proxy tool ProxyMII, which I rebranded ProxHTTPSProxy 1.5.220717 and took as the basis for my package ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3 3V3, but also another proxy tool called 3Proxy. Does anyone here use this tool? Or at least, has anyone of you tried or tested 3proxy? Here is the link to the original post: And here is the GitHub website of 3proxy for additional information: https://github.com/3proxy/3proxy Cheers, AstroSkipper1 point

What are you trying to edit "without success"? "Sunsetting Chrome Translate for old Chrome" - is the cause. Research done in a couple of clicks. https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/217285368/sunsetting-chrome-translate-for-chrome-m95-and-older?hl=en They claim to still support 96 and up, which is not entirely true, at least on my end, I was only able to get translate fully working with Chrome 103 (May or June 2022).1 point

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware v1 Free/Pro (compatible version with SSE only CPUs) Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a high performance anti-malware application that thoroughly removes even the most advanced malware and spyware. With effective, quick scans and malware removal capabilities, this program is the perfect addition to your PC's defences. It is still XP-compatible and can be used in two versions, Free or Pro. The full version of the product includes a number of key features, including the ability to schedule updates and scans, and most importantly, a real-time malware protection module that blocks malicious processes and websites before they even start. Furthermore, this antimalware programme supports old computers with a CPU lacking of the SSE2 instruction set. Features: Here is a screenshot of a comparison between Free and Pro version: Homepage: https://web.archive.org/web/20130618025654/http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Version number: 1.75.0.1300 Date of release: 09.04.2013 System requirements: Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Release notes: Review: https://www.ghacks.net/2013/04/10/malwarebytes-anti-malware-1-75-update-adds-archive-scanning/ Download links: Installer: Installer of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Database Update: mbam-rules-2019.10.17.zip Installation: Remove any old installation of Malwarebytes! Run the installer mbam-setup-1.75.0.1300.exe provided by the first link above, but do not start the programme directly after installation has been finished! Now, execute the file mbam-rules.exe which is inside the file mbam-rules-2019.10.17.zip provided by the second link above! This will update the installation and bring it up to date as of 17.10.2019. Be sure to deactivate the automatic programme update to avoid receiving an unwanted programme upgrade! Finally, select your other options and update the virus definitions via the Update programme tab! If updating doesn't work directly, try again until it works! From now on, you will receive the latest virus definitions. Explanation: The manual, offline Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Database Update not only updates the virus definitions, but also changes the internal update server addresses. This step allows the programme to access the update server again. Screenshots: Trial version: Free version: Pro version: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 is the last release of the version 1. It can be used as an offline scanner or, if the user own a licence, as an antimalware programme with real-time protection, especially on old computers which lack of the SSE2 instruction set, i.e., SSE and not more. It is very lightweight, low on resources and can be used in other Windows XP systems, too, of course. I used it in the past and was fine with it. And, I will install it on my old Athlon XP computer. And finally, thanks to @Monroe for reporting that his installation of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75.0.1300 is still receiving most recent definition updates in 2023. Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper1 point

:OT I use the well-known, very good screenshot programme Hardcopy from sw4you. Another German software and absolutely great! I use it for more than 20 years. It is free of charge and still XP-compatible. I save all screenshots in the file format PNG and upload them to an image hoster. The hoster I use is postimage. It works as it should and is free of charge in standard mode. You have to register there, of course. :END OF OT1 point
-
Looking at the images @Monroe has attached in his post: one can clearly see that updating of definitions in Malwarebytes v1.75.0.1300 is working in its Free version, too. Furthermore, I was able to activate the Pro version by using my lifetime licence. Only in the Pro version, you will have a real-time protection as is usual with Malwarebytes and many other manufactures of antimalware programmes. Cheers, AstroSkipper PS: If you have problems to open a CLP file, install IrfanView! The most recent version 4.62 is still XP-compatible and free of charge. IrfanView is a great piece of software. I use it since the 90's of last century, starting under Windows 95.1 point

I'm sorry, but this can not be taken serious in 2023 year. The first CPU with SSE2 was released in year 2000. That's more then 22 years ago. Let those people go and upgrade to something more modern. Windows XP works so much better on 4-core systems. Now we have even 8 core Ryzen work with XP. There is no excuses left for staying on none SSE2 system now. Go and upgrade to at least Core2Duo or Athlon64X2 - they are dirt cheap now. I repeat there is no excuses to seat on, like Pentium 3 or Athlon XP and demand everyone attention. Those systems are completely obsolete, they serve people well for 2 decades, now live them alone and upgrade! It is more than serious. And you do not have to understand that, either. There are users who are, for whatever reason, still interested in antimalware programmes targeting Windows XP on old hardware, whose CPU does not have more than the SSE instruction set. And it doesn't matter why. In any case, these computers still exist. For example, one of my computers is equipped with an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Thoroughbred (Model 8). But frankly, I wonder what your problem is. It doesn't concern you anyway. I think the following rule should be applied:1 point

It's not an overclock per se. The BIOS just unlocks the boost limit. And all voltages will stay the same. It doesn't mean the card will run in boost mode for 24/7, and you have a proper ventilated case.1 point
