After thinking about this for a while, it's not for the reason you think. The reason he said to you "it’s rather late to call yourself a “legacyfan.”" is because he thought you want Windows to be fully patched with security updates (that is, patching it from any vulnerability). So, I think @Vistapocalypse rather stands a point about that.

Welcome to MSFN ItCoder! That possibility was mentioned in a very lengthy AskWoody thread about Defender updates that @Volume Z contributed to, so I do not doubt what you say. Have you actually tried that for MSE updates? (It is astonishing to me that Microsoft hasn’t ended those definition updates yet.) Is there any particular reason why you wish to avoid build 6003? However, any readers who wish to install the extended kernel and/or install Windows updates up to the end of support for Server 2008 (by which time updates were signed with SHA-2) are still going to need KB4474419, which entails “upgrading “ to build 6003.

I've tested it two months ago. MSE 4.4 works even with autoupdate (there's no need to run mpam-fe)! I want to avoid 6003 because it isn't "Vista" and if you want to install some updates (such as Ultimate Extras) you must have Windows Update working (with a proxy)

Hi, although it could be a little too late, I have discovered you can add SHA-2 kernel-level support in Windows Vista SP2 installing KB4039648. This won't change the build number to 6003 and works fine (for example to update MSE and Defender).

I agree with you, mate. It's also saddening me that members who used to talk to me often (like @AstroSkipper, for example), talk to me less nowadays, which rather gives me the feeling that they don't like me, but, as @UCyborg once said: "I guess sometimes something just snaps in one's mind and then things are never the same again.", so, I guess I'll have to accept how things go.

Each and every one of the above is a very interesting topic to converse about , however I humbly think here is not the most appropriate "place"; I, as much as anybody, can live with "a few" OT comments among a majority of posts with substance/relevance to the main subject(s) discussed in a dedicated thread; more than "a few" and I picture "trains de-railed" ... At the same time, some members here wonder why "these" threads reach so quickly the 200-page threshold ... (I'm also subscribed to these threads via e-mail notifications, "OT" posts also cram my inbox (and disk space, as I use a dedicated client, not webmail), so even more personal time needed to devote on sorting out the "valuable" from the "OT" e-mails...) So the issue is not the BIOS (in itself) nor (probably) the USB drivers (in themselves) it is a combination of the two. Pure speculation, to be checked/confirmed: Case A, stick connected before booting: A1) when legacy USB is disabled in BIOS the OS knows nothing about the USB stick and when the drivers load they load/mount the device fully A2) when legacy BIOS is enabled in BIOS the stick is mapped by BIOS and when the USB drivers load they *somehow* load/mount the device partially Case B, stick connected after booting: B1) no matter if legacy USB is enabled or disabled in BIOS, the OS knows nothing about the USB stick until the drivers load and ... (either mount the stick fully or not) In theory A1 and B1 should behave the same, but there could be a difference between the USB drivers enumerating the stick when loading (case A1) or after having already loaded (case B1). jaclaz

Imagine. Someone extends Office 2010 in the future so it can properly render all documents made with Office 365.2064! And wrote plugins that incorporated all of that new version's features... Why didn't anyone do that with 2000/2003? OK there's the compatibility pack (wish it worked on Windows 95) but I've seen PPTXs that don't even work properly with 2007. I bought Office 2000 because I thought it would be the gateway to reading Office Open XML documents on Windows 95.
