It doesn't prove anything. You DID try to connect via HTTPS. You should see "403 - Forbidden: Access is denied" when connected to http://update.microsoft.com/v6/ClientWebService/client.asmx

However, I still don't know why are you trying to connect to that very page. Where did you get it?

Hey there. I wanted to ask, if the windows update site is no longer ever able to provide updates from years back, how do we get them now ?? Is it even humanly possible anymore through some other program or site or anything ? "not" including the "update catalog" site that has everything manually you can search for.

What i mean is for example i get a new PC or hard drive with XP,  or something similiar. How will i be able to know what updates i might or might not be missing up to the final ones in April 2014 ?? I wouldnt have a clue what "kb numbers" i dont yet have up to 2014. So i wouldnt be able to just use the "catalogue" site if you know what i mean.

Is there any way anymore, because of the regular Windows Update not being able to scan and whatnot you guys mentioned ?? I hope this makes sense. I tried my best to explain.

I've only read a little about this "mini update tool" thing that apparently is the alternative, but i think you guys discussed earlier in this thread, or another one about that not working anymore either. So i dont know.

what i mean is, is there another way to actually scan for updates i dont already have if regular windows update and "mini update tool" are no longer able to ? assuming there even is any "trusted and safe" website or program to do so.

You could try my jscript to scan updates offline (updated and no modification is needed):

scan updates offline.js

Read comments first, for you should modify it a bit (the path to wsusscn2.cab).

p.s. If you do not have an old wsusscn2.cab file,  don't use the link in the comment to download it! This is the link I used to download, but now it is SHA-2 signed and cannot be used on XP. As @max-h previously indicated, you should download from https://web.archive.org/web/20191209214827if_/http://download.windowsupdate.com/microsoftupdate/v6/wsusscan/wsusscn2.cab (I tried it myself and that file is unusable either. Actually, Everyone are lied. Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256 works on Windows 2000.

(If you wish to install by your own with the original Windows Update 7.6.exe , follow below. First , you have to extract the Windows Update Agent 7.6 by using 7-zip or winrar or other zip extracting software into a folder. When you open that folder, you will see three files. Then you have to extract a file called WUA-Downlevel into a folder. Open inside and run the wusetup.exe , run through the setup and it is done. A warm reminder , It has the same requirement like Windows Update Agent 3.0. Don't try to run directly from the Windows Update Agent 7.6.exe , otherwise a error message will pop up and said that the file is not a vaild win32 application.)

That wsusscn2.cab file doesn't work for me in WUMT, I just get a "No signature was present in the subject" error like with all the other recent ones,

Judging by the "wsus.reg" on the desktop... You're probably not using the normal windoze update servers.

This poster is banned now so they wont be responding, but i highly suspect people are not lying when they say the original MS servers dont cater to 2000 and XP anymore. Third-party WSUS servers are the only way to do it reliably since I think almost a year ago now.

Did you try my new uploaded jscript? I had encountered phenomenon that signature related error on same wsusscn2.cab file that previously works, and the error would disappear after system restart; also it seems have something to do with the way function UpdateServiceManager.AddScanPackageService is called (maybe WUMT encounterd the same thing). My new jscript seems to have eliminated that symptom (on my machine). YMMV
