  1. walign.exe : windows alignment tool i think but ive never had it work on 98se i think there is a scheduled task for it though, i have used it on 98fe once not sure what it did though this is probably not a good idea because there a lot of useful commandline tools in there that you will need sooner of later if you remove them
  2. is this really a problem you change skins that often? you should not judge a browser by how it looks
  3. it might be only cdplayer.exe but im not interely sure and i cant check from here
  4. mplayer2.exe: windows media player 6.4 mplayer.exe: earlier version of wmp not sure which version maybe 6.0ish theres the other components such as Breifcase: never used this Quickview: never used this think ive seen it on nt4 Microsoft Wallet: never used this Personal Web Server: apache is apparently much better Web Publishing Wizard: ive never really worked out what this is for either i always uninstall it when i install office
  5. Telnet deffinatly useful many modems\switches\routers can be accessed with telnet and also windows server can be used as a telnet server. Telnet works fine though maybe it would be better if it could just run in command line hmm maybe it could be replaced with putty since putty includes ssh and other useful options that telnet doesnt provide Useful command line stuff Doskey Edit Ping IPConfig FTP Tracert winipcfg32 however i dont think is very useful only useful on 95 where ipconfig doesnt exist Syncronise what is it used for, usually it is used to syncronise offline files and files on a network but im not sure if its the same thing here Web Folders ive never used this nor have i ever worked out what its used for other components such as Direct Cable Connection: which is also used for data transfer over serial or paralell pretty much the windows version of interlnk but you need dialup networking installed which is why i prefer hyperterminal over this Doctor Watson Netwatcher: allowing you to see open files and users connected to various shares on your computer Tour98 should be removed Sound Recorder is a bit too basic for any audio recording main thing i dont like is the short time limit Maintenance Wizard: basically a wizard to configure scheduled tasks for system utils Scandisk Defrag Disk Cleanup Wupdmgr.exe: just launches windows update system monitor: graphs of stuff like cpu usage Resource meter: system resources and stuff shown Drive Space\Compression Agent: Useless for FAT32 should be removed Actmovie.exe: doesnt appear to do anything except provide an icon for the shortcut to the rundll command to start amovie.ocx SFC.exe: System File Checker Sysedit: 16bit app that shows autoexec.bat,config.sys,win.ini,system.ini and stuff msconfig.exe : obviously useful for stopping processes start up such as those stored in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run SCRs: are the screensavers important anymore? internat.exe: quick acess to language options through taskbar icon equivalent of language bar but slightly less annoying stimon.exe: used for scanners and stuff JDBGMGR.EXE: never known what this does i do remember claims that this was a virus though
  6. I Dont think Hyperterminal was bought by Microsoft, I think it was just licenced by them or something. A decent alternative might be something like interlnk and intersvr because they are command line and provide all the functionality you would need for data transfer however you could not telnet into something like a cisco switch, it is just for data transfer over serial cable and also only works in DOS AFAIK, because you have to put DEVICE=C:\DOS\INTERLNK.EXE into config sys for it to work. Should this become a complete list of components in 98? or just a list of components to remove from it?
  7. I wouldnt like hyperterminal being removed as soon as its not there ill need it, mainly I use Hyperterminal for data transfer over serial cable when I havent installed any drivers also I would use Hyperterminal if i was using a serial connection to a cisco switch or something although perhaps hyperterminal could be replaced or improved in some way perhaps so it is more like telnet but used with the serial interface rather then the network interface like telnet is
  8. hmm i thought i saw something saying it still worked but perhaps i saw the wrong document but trying to open a big pdf it started complaining about low resources so maybe its a good idea to use an older version actually i dont like the look of v3 as much anyway
  9. sounds like a problem in KEXVER.INI in that ini file there should be a line shuch as Firefox Setup 3.0.1.exe=winxp except with the appropriate setup name
  10. 18, so many ive never heard of and the amstrad one wasntt there , maybe that was only released in Europe
  11. nlite are you sure? nlite is NT only, you havent been trying to do soemting with 98se and PC DOS or is it completely standard install as in format C: copy cabs to C: and then setup /is or something similar
  12. instead of downloading and installing individual drivers for every usb drive you have you should use this http://www.msfn.org/board/Maximum-Decim-Na...USB-t43605.html which provides generic drivers for 98SE
  13. i think i installed vituralbox on ubuntu 8.04 and it worked but i didnt find out taht it didnt come with a video driver for 98se til after id isntalled it which annoyed me. as for ubuntu 8.10 the ubgrade process using the 8.10 alternative disk worked fine, im not used to using adifferent place for shutdown menu thing. maybe it wasnt just ubuntu human that had glitches but ive really only tried 2 themes maybe cause i didnt think i should try windows like themes on linux, cause i think i saw that glitch with one of the other themes that brownish one.
  14. do you mean when the titlebar sort of goes white and u sort of have to minimise and stuff to get to go back and only happens on clear looks ubnuntu human theme but doesnt happen on the older bluish one?
  15. im pretty sure usp3b3 support 98lite, 2.1a definately does usp should work fine to be installed after removing ie
  16. i think 48bit lba had to be enabled in 2k not sure though, FAT32 support up to 2TB Partitions and NTFS supports bigger then that
  17. stealing my old thread, anyone tried Ubuntu 8.10
  18. agreed server 2k8 runs well, 2k8 felt much more responsive then vista on p4 2ghz 512mb ram, but its upto you what os you use
  19. agreed 2000 can be made to run faster using nlite and disabling services. i can run 2000 fine on a PIII 667 as a dedicated server for ut99 (though i would prefer to use NT4 but hamachi is needed so i dont)
  20. 2000 and XP support NTFS and FAT32 2000 might load some of the services that you dont want just like XP eg Remote Registry you will probably find that DOS games wont work as well as on 9x because its NT
  21. mmm PCI, used to use GF4 MX 420 PCI card, and i had 3 PCI slots and no AGP on an intel 810 chipset pitty the board died, dont know why though.
  22. but i think it is more about the challenge to see what you can run vista on just like here Vista slowest hardware experiment
  23. i know ive been able to do someting with 2 network cards on 98se though im not sure if it worked properly. here is an aricle that lets u configure ip routing on 9x/NT though im not sure it is what you want. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...s/w2kprout.html
  24. any particular genre? RTS Warcraft I Warcraft II Age of Empires I Age of Empires II Starcraft Red Alert 1 Command and Conquer Gold FPS Quake I Duke Nukem 3D Strife RPG Diablo I Adventure Monkey Island I Monkey Island II Day of the Tentacle Loom Other Sim City 2000 Civillisation II
  25. ive run both these on a P3 866 with a GF4 MX 420 PCI but your right in that i didnt bother changing the graphic level much. hmm thought cache had more effect then that though i havent done research
