  1. "Dimension 9200" - F12 is the Diagnostics, F2 is BIOS. That's what the Service Manual says. @Sophy - be REAL careful about just "turning off" the PC, particularly during Booting Into Windows since Pending Updates may be being processed. BTW, forget using F12 from here on since it's absolutely useless (boots you to the Diagnostics Partition #1). Dell did some REALLY silly stuff with all of that and (AFAIK) no longer supplies that facility (or partition) with newer PC's preloaded with Windows 7 and up. Also, I suggest you find (and download) that Service Manual since it gives a bit more details than the Owner's Manual. Just go to dell and search for "Dimension 9200" then click on the Documentation tab. HTH Side Note - That Partition#1 is/was their dumb way of avoiding helping by saying "Run Diagnostics and we'll try to help you. Oh, and maybe we'll just RMA (replace) your Motherboard." Vendors' Tech Help Line is usually pretty useless IMHO.
  2. Side Note - F12 is for going into the Diagnostics. You probably used the F2 to get in a "fix" it. Please confirm. Also with the "Windows Updates" updates that jaclaz linked to (get them manually) you MAY get a better Windows Updates experience. I have a Clean Windows 7 sitting at the side with ONLY the WUA (Windows Update Agent) Version 7.6.7600.320 installed and Manually went to Windows Update to get JUST the necessary Updated Drivers. It was pretty quick. I blame Microsoft for clobbering their Update Servers for the sake of Windows 10. Manually download and Install this (WUA v7.6.7600.320) and try again. You MAY get a bit further as it seems to help in the "redirect" that MS now uses. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2887535 Be aware that newer "WUA updates" exist (linked by jaclaz) but the FIRST one that needs installed SEEMS to be the v320 one as MS doesn't APPEAR to "offer" it whatsoever via Windows Update (anymore). HTH
  3. FYI - Everest v2.20.405 Home (Free) *may* display your Physical Devices. Whether it will show Ven/Dev for "unknown" in the "Windows Devices" section, I don't know. I don't have a Win98 installed (and usable) on any physical HW ATM. There's also a software called "Unknown Device Identifier" that's floating around on the WWW. Seems a shame to have to load up XP to get the info. HTH (worth a try)
  4. @roffen - Post#14 (as I said) - Whether that's true or not... You did read that post, right? Can we "assume" that the problem was "fixed" with later processors? I don't have an XP on my Dell AMD Dual-Core (x64) ATM, so I can't confirm any of this, but I'm pretty sure that Dell inserted that "fix" into the XP MCE 2005 install (before I "broke" my E521's). I don't remember that BOOT.INI being present, though. Side note: I now have a Dell Inspiron 531 (almost the same, just "upgraded" hardware). Can't remember if it will take a Quad (which I don't have), so...
  5. ? FTP "incoming" ports are 20 and 21. Why Port 2121 on the phone? You'll note that's the open (incoming) ports on your XP and Win7, so.... You also may need to allow incoming ICMP port opened for "ping" (or "echo") to work. Of course, this is the "server" ports (which may make the above irrelevant) but there's also the "browser" service involved with Local, as well as all devices being in a common "Workgroup". For Windows 7 you should use "Public" (not Home/Work) and open up all the other options within it. Now backing out, since jaclaz is "on" this...
  6. Free Beers for everyone? Free LastSession.ini for everyone! Eggs over light, please, imaginary cook. Rip everything out and test it, m-kay? Let us know how you fare and if you need help - after you do that.
  7. It goes no further than EI.CFG. There is no other difference in the content. In other words, look at the contents of the two and tell me what the difference is. I have compared the OEM and Retail DVD's and they're exactly the same (except for said file). Unless, of course, you're referring to a Customized (by the actual OEM) DVD. P.S. That looks like a WAREZ DVD. For a fact, DAZ is (it's a Loader).
  8. Again, I don't get it. All you need are the listed files and the modifications to AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. I've done this many times. It's the same principle as DOS and Windows 95 (which used DOS drivers). You do *not* have to install the way that website stated. That's just dumb! And according to this, there's Intel Chipset drivers that should work (no hacking?). http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/t/3698745 DVD Drive or CD Drive (you've stated both)? Which Chipset Drivers are you using?
  9. Post #14... I *knew* I seen something about AMD Multi-Core processors having some trouble with XP. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1925941 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/895980 http://support.amd.com/en-us/search/utilities
  10. Both French -and- English. I have the UL (not the latest, but...) and yes, it -does- separate the Win10 into a separate sub-selection in case you want to (foolishly) have the spyware (malware/trojanware) installed for some esoteric reason.
  11. Disable the NGEN service ("Optimization"). Always. It's a hog. BTW, Server 2k8 includes dotNET as a "feature" and does NOT include that "service", strangely enough. BTW, I was under the impression that XP would only deal with two physical CPU's so those cores are apparently within a single package (pretty sure that's true). I've seen some sites speak of the 6-core version causing some XP problems. I'd suggest doing a WWW search on that. Something is definitely amiss.
  12. Warez indeed. Further, absolutely useless since they are Hard Disk Images and can't be installed since the Install Media (the CD and the I386 folder, just like XP, BTW) is "missing". A real CD is the ticket. Glad you found one as they are rather scarce.
  13. I don't get it. If you already HAD the OS installed, then all you needed to do was to begin at Step #6 (skip steps 1->5) in order to load CD/DVD Driver software. You can do that anytime on a running OS. You don't need to do anything with a Floppy. Boot Disks Images can be obtained with those drivers (etc) and extracted via WinImage (in the running OS) and proceed from there. HTH
  14. Interestingly, TeamViewer goes though a "third party" (themselves). JFYI... Also, I'm referring to their "free edition" which ABSOLUTELY refused to run on my XP machine to allow me to get to my brothers' PC. Maybe because initially I tried to access him via my Server first and it logged my IP? (see "third party" above"). TeamViewer - never again. Sits on my HDD dormant and uninstalled in my "archive". Hopefully, the OP will return and report Success/Failure. Seems a lot of folks never come back to report that (see "Upgrade Dell Vista to Win7", the Topic I created and gave a link to via PM).
  15. Ahhh! I see! Therein lies the advantage then. Maybe the OP may need a link/links to a basic tutorial on booting USB using G4D? Or MAYBE read that PassPass link since it's pretty straight-forward and hass simple How-To instructions? Allow me to repeat it - http://reboot.pro/topic/18588-passpass-bypass-the-password/
  16. Ahhh!!! DRAG the quote! Thx, Trip! Wish I'd have known that sooner. The quote "appears" to be a Picture/Snapshot-type dealio (a/l to my nonsense-icle sensibilities). This new forum thingie is soooo different than WYSIWIG of the previous version. Seriously, there needs to be a basic Instruction Manual / Help for "How-To's", or does it already exist and I missed it?
  17. Nonetheless... I want Free Beer, but I have to pay for it. Sorry, no prefab pictures. Take your own selfies. Good luck to the OP in their endeavors to shrink it so small it does absolutely nothing. Better off creating a (dependable) VistaPE with WinBuilder.
  18. Also - God bless Russians (I found it also - now archived). Win 98, NT4, Win2k also "available" (FWIW).
  19. Conxion link - deader than a doornail (like all other Conxion links). https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://mssjus.www.conxion.com/download/winddk/install/august00/winme/en-us/* You'll probably have to get it from "other" sources (based on filename).
  20. ...which is where I would have started from (clean). I can't wait to see if WU clobbers my fresh installs once I actually start Updating. As I have stated before, I have *not* installed anything *but* certain (two?) WU-related updates and WU (manual search) runs pretty fast. Note that I have *not* allowed WU to Update as-of-yet. However, once I allow it (them) to actually UPDATE may be an entirely different story.
  21. The Linux Distros are extremely small (as in CD, not DVD). Got one sitting here in my "toolbox" tray. Regardless, any bootable-to-USB will work, Not sure, but I belive I have the associated Boot Floppy (set) for that same software, so any Grub4DOS USB stick should do it.
  22. Not OT (surely), but (as I have stated before) older OS will only support older Browser, hence the loss of some (many) Win9x Members. UNLESS they upgrade to (Win2k? or) XP (and maybe even higher). Kind of reminescent of MS' "upgrades" that clobber Windows Updates (yes, they moved to a different server platform). The only choice is to do battle with what we have, work around, tweak, upgrade as necessary (both HW and SW), hack a little, and pray for the best. < /NotOT >
  23. TeamViewer may barf if going through Router/Firewall as well. It "thinks" you're a Server. At least, I had to give up using it in my case. Smarter to open up the appropriate Ports on your Router and Firewall (including the OS) and get the External Addresses (directly from the Router's Interface) and use the RDP software. I guarantee that will work. Note - Router=Cable/DSL Modem/whatever (including any INTERNAL routers). Other than that, good luck on TeamViewer. Once (I stress that word) I got it to work a looong time ago helping my cousin in FL and we were connected to Cable Modem directly (no routing). TeamViewer does NOT like routers (they ARE Servers)! As soon as I was behind the Router it was over ("You must use the Corporate Version" or some such). So, NO, you don't have to have "special software" or (e.g.) DuckDNS to get your real IP. Better learn how to manipulate that ISP Modem/Router.
