there is a certain codec that sum avi files are encoded using that cause explorer to crash/hang, this can be fixed by removing a couple of registry keys, as to which ones those are i honestly cant remember. i have tested both XP and 2003 as a workstation and when both nlited i find they do use pretty much the identical amount of resources , but win2k3 is alot faster and a hell of alot more stable. The only thing about using 2k3 as a workstation is that certain programs like firewall/antivirus/defrag all require that you download server editions instead of personal editions, not that it bothers me in the slightest as i dont use firewall/av and i already use O&O Server Defrag anyway.

i too would be interested in how i could go about setting up my 2003 SP1 similar to this, i would ideally like to have it setup as a workstation by using unattended install and reg tweaks.

gotta agree with ripken, most pc experts will choose to custom build their pc so that they can choose the best components for what they specifically want todo. Dell probably arent to happy with Intels choice to start supplying Processors for the Mac. Also im sure they have seen recent figures showing that AMD is now the CPU of choice in nearly every aspect of todays computer market and that it will certainly boost their profit.

Dell use expensive underperforming Intel chips, Alienware favour AMD which are cheaper and more powerful, that would be why Alienware come out cheaper.

i dont think that dell will interfere too much with the way Alienware is run. You never know they may even be able to lower Alienwares extortionate prices.
