this would be nice. MSFN basic function works without enabling javascript on nmatrix which is nice. Only file upload need js. Some forums that look and claim to be classic compatible refuses even shows posts unless allow js. Still could be smaller what is stupid is they wont offer rss even to paid users. I pay from few magazines and got access their web as bonus. Like said I wont have internet acess 24/7 and is nice read news offline on computer I have not browsed without nMatrix and noscript for long time for security and privacy. Iltalehti works without js but for example karjalainen (local news paper I pay) wont anymore after layout upgrade This is all you see when js disabled even if you are logged in with customer account. Article needs 4 sites worth of js to work after layout upgrade and when I contacted their feedback nothing happened. I guess will stick with paper version. but there is still some somewhat decent feeds left from Yleisradio (Public radio company funded by taxes). They got RSS feeds to multiple topics. Also YLE got teletext (with flight timetables, radiation, emergency alerts, news weather etc.) on tv and accessible over their website when I got no TV to use. It is tax funded so likely wont never pull plugs

german seems not have hopped in to social media bangwagon yet luckily iltalehti rss like most rss feeds now (expect Finnish Meteorological Institute) need access to bloated website to read news article fully. I prefer read it inside newsboat or other viewer without loading anything off web. Also rss can be fecthed offline with few clicks that is useful to me when I am on move and want see day news. I know that trick. Have not yet tried way on Windows but on linux newsboat+mpv allows also watch video without distraction using rss feeds

Internet downfall started with HTML5 and forcing too much of javascript and dropping many good standards. Standards started changing all the time by google resulting browsers not to work properly on sites. RSS is dead and you need use newspaper bloated webpage that needs 5 domains worth of javascript allowed to view news unless disable css that makes it look horrible. Back in old days RSS (real simple syndication) was everywhere. It is feed that had articles from site. Every news site and other had it. Even blogs did. I liked since was able load it to laptop or pda with rss viewer and read day news even when was away from internet connection. Also was able easily multiple news feeds and blogs and delete what ever articles liked (promotional or old articles. It was like social media news feed but single user, user was on full control, not controlled by single company, worked offline. Nowadays every possible Nowadays RSS feeds got only headlines when cannot read artcile with reader or feed wont exist at all. One local newspaper killed RSS feed and tells download their mobile app (basically website wrapped to electron) to read news now. Everyone uses social media now and smartphone. When I said one I got no whatsapp and should call me or text or email it to me, that person started asking why not and how much I need use them. People feels sometimes be unable be without their social media and phones even for minute. When I was young I had nokia brick that could run snake and had even built in video and audio player (whopping 128mb mmc card to files ). Thanks to price of cellular data it kept me away from it and spent actual time with friends which feels hard now. Was thinking making phone park to my house so peoples would not look their phone every third second since it beeps when visiting me since it is very annyoing. Also I miss p2p based instant messaging. Best you can do to find new simple sites is use Wiby search engine (I am not affiliated with it just found it) that only indexes simple and mostly personal sites. I found lot of sites I did not knew existed trough it. Also not to use Chromium based browsers since they are mostly made by google. I am using mypal trough all my Windows systems (since palemoon dropped classic addon support and main developer is anti XP) Yeah MSFN is pretty much best out there that is still left. I like board way of doing it, no need own name or profile picture plus can have signatures which is nice to have. Can talk with peoples all around the globe without needing have all personal data on profile. Just like in old days

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Nokiamies replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
did they stop providing source code to client? Atleast interlink site lacks it. I am worried addon may break on future Few months ago I reported bug on mailnews and finally been able to find when happens. If I leave any IMAP folder open from either of my emails (inbox as expection) and close the client, next time it will cause something corrupt, all folders disappear and creates junk folder to server like on picture. Same also happen if try read any folder before IMAP connection intialises after start. Only way fix is restore profile backup or delete appdata. I am tired for needing to worry if forgot change view to local folder when closing client. So far tried reinstall, new profile, no addons and none helped. @roytam1 I know you lack access to source but is there any way for you to trace this bug on code -
here same but on winter and begins with negative digit. It causes issues on winter when moving laptop. Mostly risk to moisture and need wait until reaches room temp before can power on. Had that struggle on college. Had to bicycle to school at extreme cold with laptop. Tried best to protect it but year after college ended had multiple technical issues. Cpu was locked to max clock speed and voltage all the time for example all it needs is one important chip to fail that kills everything else

I am mostly using custom desktop computers now. They are not foolproof and can have failure but can fix many of them easily. Bad cpu fan: replace fan or cooler with ones you can find from everywhere. Bad power supply: Just go to store (may not be soon thanks to ATX12V insanity to kill old hw) and buy one, bad gpu: replace it. I had constant freezing and crashing on old XP system (Phenom X4, 4GB RAM, 8800GTS) due Nvidia nForce crashed all the time making computer freeze and was able swap parts to same old chassis for new rig. Also can extend lifespan by increasing cooling or even running open chassis

sounds like bad hdd and bad power brick.
-
what failed on it? Ram, cpu or what? Old laptops had swappable cpu and you can find old processors with 10 euros or less on ebay I recommend looking refurb laptops. Can get older better quality business laptop cheaper even with XP compatible hw. Here one store sells some that can run XP mostly 2nd or 3rd gen intel

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Nokiamies replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
On latest MailNews (Roytam 1 fork) Enigmail (used to PGP encrypt emails) plugin glitches and shows menu twice. It works but menus show twice unlike with offical mailnews -
I think need to have TS2 compatible server since new one just errors out and refuses to connect on old version anything that sounds more clear than NMT phone during thunderstorm is good quality to me. And older codecs were more cpu friendly

you can make grub work with secure boot and can use grub to load Windows. Of course that is not easy task and will need lot of work unless will also run linux. Manually doing it requires to have secure boot keys

many times using setup.exe on game folder instead of autorun.exe on root folder helped fixing it. Quake 3 autorun was 16bit while installer was 32bit

Sign a petition to bring the old Youtube Layout BACK
Nokiamies replied to WinFX's topic in Websites and Boards
I was sent automatically to spam box on one console repair related video for sectence "some of problems are related to ANA/HANA (Xbox 360 video encoder chip) not gpu itself" likely since bot though it was mistype of one word. I hate auto filtering for that reason. Also seems some other words are autofiltered even if they are not insulting or mean anything bad -
Sign a petition to bring the old Youtube Layout BACK
Nokiamies replied to WinFX's topic in Websites and Boards
Petitions like that wont do a thing. Google will bloat everything. They have so far killed wap version of their search (redirects to bloated new site with ridiciously big icons for old handheld), wap/mobile version of youtube site that allowed stream 3gp files to selected media player (allowed use old handheld to listen music or watch videos off youtube, then killed flash 7 compatible site and messed page layout making use of youtube with ff2 impossible. Then they killed rest of flash support and blocked multiple browsers from working with new HTML5 player that worked fine with old one. And site only works properly on Chrome...feels like 1998 and IE again... Best soluction is stop using youtube. I use Pipe-viewer (linux only) to watch videos from youtube. If need download when on XP I use invidious to search video and youtube-dlg with xp compatible FFMPEG library to download. One bundled with youtube-dlg wont work with Windows XP resulting conversion to mp3 or other format fail -
I have tried Windows 11 and I will tell you my experience
Nokiamies replied to WinFX's topic in Windows 11
It is usually since first have 7 year old Windows install filled with bloatware, fragmented drive, lot startup services. Then they do upgrade which does fresh install of Windows (been since vista) and for some reason freshly installed new Windows with no programs, fragmentation etc runs faster. Freshly installed os is fast and snappy and will only over time get slower if user wont maintain it. Second change is user had 7 year old computer with 5400rpm hard drive, bare minium of ram, integrated gpu, cpu that was low end even for time. Then they buy brand new desktop with high end cpu, gpu, plenty of ram and SSD with latest Windows and then praises Windows to be faster ignoring fact they got brand new system to new Windows. For most pc means Windows and hardware wont matter. Good example was long ago when one Mac user called Windows trash since ran slowly compared his Macbook. His Windows laptop was lowest end 200-400€ laptop with 1gb ram, Celeron M, intel gma and Macbook was 2000€ and I think it had Core2duo, 8gb ram etc (wont remember specs properly anymore). Of course 2000€ laptop is faster than cheapest market laptop. He said Windows to be reason to slowness not laptop price different.Second example is one client who said she had upgraded to Windows 10 and had some issues. I asked if she had verified hw was good enough to run Windows 10 and told her to show laptop so I could check it. Laptop was brand new with preinstalled Windows 10. Tried explain client it was hardware she upgraded along with Windows and kept calling laptop Windows. That is most annyoing thing I keep hearing, refer Windows as hardware not as OS -
Also no more fully free linux install with dual boot with Windows 11. Need have secure boot compatible loader that only exist on ubuntu. Wonder how long it will take for ms reject linux bootloader secure boot keys

I am technically doing that on administrator job. Paid well to use Windows 10

Microsoft announces a Windows event on June 24. What do I think?
Nokiamies replied to sunryze's topic in Windows 10
They did overhype from every Windows version. And everyone are already praising Windows 11 as only os they every need. Few months before it they said they never need any other os than Windows 10. This picture define it pretty much and is still true on Windows 11 There is cult following every tech company. Tesla got it cult, so does Apple, Microsoft, Valve, Google. They are blindly praising anything new company does and try defend every single company bad decision. They also call everyone disagreeing with them id*** or something else insulting that is biggest issue. Companies got their blindly following For example I questioned some self driving car and had some of it flaws as argument and got called id*** (is there profanity filter now since part of word turned to ***? That word is not even profanity), boomer, not ready to future etc. Same when said critic about Apple anti repair practises. Got lot of hate and called id*** again. And you can guess what happen if criticise anything on Windows or linux. Same . I respect other opinions and wont go personal insults if someone disagree with me. I am sorta fanboy on some cases, Classic Nokia and SAAB as good example, but not blindly liking everything on it and can take critic from them and response to it without telling opposite id***. MSFN is pretty much last place where can have civil conversation even if criticise things without getting eaten alive. wonder if microsoft will do what Vmware did and skip 13 to 14 Well if google Floc (baked in more precise browser spyware) becomes requiments to most websites, even retail stores and banks it will be. Right now most of web still works without Chrome or Chromium luckily so even XP can browse web just fine but on future if flock is required and google drops legacy support will not have access to even my own bank account other than bank office or pulling money out from ATM -
We are reaching point where monopoly I have been warning long time starts happen. When Windows 98 came out ms paid vendors to make many usb devices only run on win98 offically since windows 98 had Internet exploiter forced in. I was able force many windows 98 exclusive usb devices run under Windows 95 with little or no tweaking and usb was not so big deal. Many pda devices (ibm workpads as good example) and phones (example nokia 9000 communicator) had serial port, so did cameras and printers until 2002 or so. Plus there NT4 as other option that still was very good to workstation use. Atleast gpu and mainboard supported Win95 until nivdia fx 5xxx. On that point there was luckily 98lite that allowed run win95 shell on windows 98 and remove ie plus there was Windows XP and Windows 2000 which even I hate IE intergration are pretty solid and mature operating systems and run xp as daily drive. There has always been two or three options to windows that been offically supported. Not talking about ability to buy it from ms since many retailers had unsold copies and internet had unused copies sold too to get it. When Windows 8 came out I knew things were going to be bad. It was impossible trying power use it on my works. Touchscreen UI got no place on desktop. Knew would be some point left with only Windows 8 as offically supported. Then Windows 10 came which was utter piece of junk and worse than Windows 98 FE with ie4. I only got Windows 10 at work laptop since all domain systems must run it and whatever ms software. On home windows 10 is banned permanently, I would rather go fully linux than win10. My issue is with win10 is constant updates, messy ui (two intergrated browsers, two control panels etc). Now Windows 11 is rolling out and seems we are slowly going Windows RT line of locked down computing devices in name of security. Actually peoples who know exploit can damage locked down system while user who is accepting fact it is locked down cannot stop it. There is no more good options on Windows. I warned long time what ms will eventually do but nobody listened since "microsoft is my friend and they care from me". We need hope community will stay strong. Do not give up using OS you like just because you are told to. Fighting back is worth it even if hard sometimes.

For Voip clients latest version of mumble client still runs under Windows XP. Murmur server used to host instance however wont. Was able login into my friend server and also public servers and use voice/text chat just fine unlike with teamspeak that latest version no longer runs on XP.

Updated browser list for Windows XP
Nokiamies replied to Cixert's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Seems MSFN is back online so can finally post this here. Since nobody seems not to have mentioned it yet, latest version of Netsurf browser for Windows runs on XP. Netsurf is minimal web browser using custom render engine. It is proof that "modern" web browser does not need have lot of bloated code and does not need hog all ram like Firefox and Chrome/Chromium forks do (and before someone says they uses ram to improve performance, how it is gonna improve performance filling ram and using swap on low ram system) . That is pretty much sweet spot between going console browser or more memory hog browser. I did run some tests under my asus eepc 900 (512mb ram, 900mhz celeron M) running tweaked Windows XP and had 25mb memory usage and 20% cpu usage at worst with it while was able access most of websites. Windows build is experimental but I had no issues with it. This is good option consider to peoples with lower end systems like @Gansangriff if you still run that Pentium 3 system Here is screenshot from ssllabs (on main pc since bigger monitor) and it ssl test. It supports all expect tls 1.3 s- 81 replies
