That is only partially true. Some latest versions (that are bloated anyways) wont work, but some recieve definition updates still and there is few that workss First is spybot S&D 1.62 that works down Windows 98 and gets def updates still. That may be able to remove it. For tradiotional viruses there is Clamwin antivirus that uses clamav engine, is free and open source and up to date. Hopefully those two will fix your issue

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Nokiamies replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
well remember what Moonchild(ish) devs did to Openbsd build of palemoon? Attacked against it for licence violation only because it was "deviating from official configuration". Ironically Palemoon originally supposed to fix issues Firefox had (addon blocking, removal of useful features) but it is slowly becoming same as firefox . What next? Maybe load tons of telemetry and useless bloat like Mozilla? I hope forks of it wont die off but future seems dark for now -
I got Windows 98SE with 98lite micro shell (95 explorer and no ie) on Vmware workstation with 4gb of ram for testing software before deploying it to my real Windows 98 system. Just avoid excess use of vmware tools drag and drop. It tends to crash with drag and drop on any win9x based os if 4gb ram. Also firefox/retrozilla may give random memory error which is solved with rebooting Windows luckily. Some of software just do not like it sometimes which is not big issue

I just have to slap barrel charger in without looking way it is which I like. Also made it easy make my own charger dock to few phones I have three batteries. One is BMS-2 which is to my Nokia 6110 and also works on my 5110. It works from phones released in 1997 to phones released in 1999 for most parts. Then I got blc-2, that works on my 3330 and 3510i and also works on almost all phones until 2003 or so. Then got BL-5C that works all other phones expect 9300 communicator and E-Series. For charger acp-7e works to every phone mentioned there and acp-12e works all but 6110 and 5110. This gives me freedom to change phone whenever pleased. Also older phones stored sms and contacts to sim by default so all need to do is pop battery to other phone with sim and good to go. I now moved from 6110 to 3330 for fun and may go to 3510i or other and then back to 6110 just because I can. Wonder if carrier is thinking why my phone imei keep changing every so often I would say standardise battery physical size and others also forbid non removable batteries because they make repairs harder and causes more e waste. I have been extending many device life by getting spare battery to them. I am not comfortable melting any glue to do it to be honest since risks related to it. Also in case something goes wrong, unplugging battery will kill power and minimise damage. Example being water damage that saved my phone few times when got wet from inside. And of chargers making real charging soluction. For while usb seemed like it but seems that new chargers wont co-operate. I got galaxy a40 on workplace and had battery running out of it and borrowed workmate oneplus charger with usb-c header. Guess what, it did not want to charge phone at all. I am not against quick charge but there should be compability mode that supplies standard voltage to device if handshake fails. Standards are good but they seems to be fading away again.

i was able find spare case to nokia 6600 I have laying around when used enough time online That looks similar to 1110 I have in box expect slimmer. Likely same hardware with slimmer design and few bugfixes. Does it last few weeks on single charge?

yes I remember. It is ironic for that

my point was not I do not want to have browser. I mean browser on OS should be user removable. Baking browser that keep getting updates if terrible idea. Microsoft abuses it monopoly by bundling unremovable components on Windows. That is my problem.

What I noticed Windows 11 start menu is forced to centre before you activate it. I was setting it up to one person and my practise is avoid excess internet use before done all tweaks and seems option to force to side is locked behind activation. After it was activated had no issue and it offered centre or side. I guess finally found reason to make peoples buy licence by forcing it wrong place by default Internet explorer is sorta gone. Microsoft edge got ie compability mode that uses mshtml.dll from internet explorer. Small step to right direction. Now all they need allow is remove MS edge, anticonsumer inexperience (one that downloads all bloatware and shows ads), microsoft store and lot more and add option to them at add and remove software menu and remove all traces off them if user wants unticks it, but I highly doubt they will allow remove features that benefit M$. Last time windows had browser free desktop by default was in 1995 on windows 95 RTM. well Windows 11 is just Windows 10 with kde ripoff desktop, stupid artificial requiments and few other tweaks. It is not different from the Windows 10 mostly for now which makes me wonder if win11 updates can be used on windows 10 in 2025

My comment was mostly joking from throwaway culture where all is old when comes out. Anything using google framework will go down and refuse work unless microg keeps support. Highest hope is on f-droid apps. Sadly nobody really cares about old devices anymore even if they are usable. Only hope is on community. For example I have modded few of my symbian phones I play around to support sha2 and can login even to gmail over imap that way which is fun since s60 3rd edition came out in 2005. Sadly any site asking over tls 1.0 refuse work unless use opera mini and being limited to tls 1.0 will also kill gmail over imap some point. Also got openstreetmap based map program on it called s60maps that is still updated. Feels anything will have community trying extend lifespan if user is not afraid of modding and tweaking

2011 and 2013 phone outdated. Well for me it is outdated when it no longer works

very old ccleaner is fine to older machines. For newer try one called bleachbit. It is free and open source. Though learn how it works before using it.

well if we ignore avast owning advertising company and selling user data and lifelock before norton and their social security number scandal (ceo posted social security number internet claiming nobody can abuse it) then yes. Avast is bloat nowadays and norton always been bloat so we can only wonder what will happen. I stopped using avast on version 12 I think which started show popup ads on free edition. I liked media player interface avast (up to 4.8) most. Was simple yet still intuitive UI and worked down Windows 98. After it became more and more bloated. 4.8 worked until 2017 on defintion updates.

I was able use old asrock nforce board with intergrated mainboard on older win10 build that way. Of course was limited to reduced feature set -

good to know. I personally wont use Windows 11 but some peoples will likely want upgrade to it even got older but still powerful hw (believe or not some got very similar old workstation hw as you do) and know atleast for it now it can be done unless ms hard codes requiment to kernel level. -
If that phone is this it looks like poor 5110 or 6110 ripoff. That is not definitely most best made phone but does it job. Sadly many judge all plastic basic phones by those. Old school nokias had near unbreakable plastic and I had few phone taking lot of abuse as kid (i dropped it to asphalt too many times when walking or cycling and dropped to water and other) and they still works. I got 1110 as alarm and it is very good phone. It has talking clock too I currently got nokia e71 for similar purpose. It got 128/128kb/s internet plan. I just have to hook it to computer I want and either use nokia own internet sw or setup standard gsm modem to internet access.

i have had on nokia going for a swim and survived after took off battery I think all it needed was type per device code when no sim inserted? I do have smartphone at work but it is not my property technically like my work laptop. It is loaned by workplace to me as long as work there, but outside it I got no smartphone. But on work been surviving without using it mostly other than calls. But workplace provided more than sufficent work resources I use my workplace phone only to work related calls and it sits on office desk daily. Only time took it home was when had to work remotely. Some workmates uses personal smartphone to work too with all software like outlook and they answer messages even when not in work which will mix work and private. I cannot be distracted by work emails when off work since only access it on my work laptop

wonder if you managed get gpu working with it proper? Windows 11 is picky from gpu and needs dx12 compatible one -
mine is mostly sitting on desk or in pocket or car dashboard. I got profile called high priority enabled on it which alerts only from my parents number and few other that I know wont call me without good reason using built in caller group option ("family", "VIP", "Friends", "work" and "others" as options). Only thing outside call and sending random short messages is listening it ringtones or playing snake if too bored middle of nowhere. I had plenty of spam calls on my old operator and when switched they ended. I also got private number which by law does not allow spam calls. If marketer or bot calls to my number will result issues to caller. I just said this is private number to few and it ended. But funny enough smartphone users seems getting more spam calls than me. Maybe that is due apps collecting data and selling to telemarketers?

It is because "lines been disconnected" . It started here from operators skyrocketing prices of landline. Before was 20 mark soon 40 then more. Then dropped gsm prices. When enough had switched off they used low use as excuse to end sales to it. Now operators around europe plan do same to any dumbphones by killing gsm "in benefit of consumer". Soon only option is smartphone sadly and I seem to be last person seeing issue on that or earlier dropping landline. Only other option is voip which I highly dislike due tied to broadband. Landlines could run on batteries for weeks if outage
-
I am one few who despite using and liking cell phone are fine for someone not having one. It is more distract free life and if someone said had landline I called them instead of sending sms. I do not understand why some think person cannot live without one. It is user choice. I choose use one since advantages on a road or on move where I am mostly and I can always mute it only letting trough most important calls. You in other hand do not want distraction at all while on move which is understandable and person own choice
-
was it due short circuit or overheating that caused it? I rarely see melted pcb on mobile devices does it also have programmable contacts like one comsys landline phone I got? It got internal phonebook and option to program speed dial ever feel like despite being younger than many others you still got oldest phone out of them? Some wonder how I can work on computer industry without smartphone.
-
Since nobody else had started thread about it, I decided to start one. What type of phone everyone are using here? Smartphone, dumbphone or still been able to stick with landline phone or something else? Also what brand and what model and is there any special reason why that exactly? I am currently rocking on Nokia 6110 from 1997. I use it because durable body, it fits well to my hand, it got long battery life (1-2 weeks on single charge), and it is from era when Nokia assembled all phones in my home country. Sure they costed more but were more reliable. I have customised it a bit, got custom logo instead of operator name (old one from one tv channel) and got knight rider theme as ringtone. On pic it is sitting on desktop stand that can charge spare battery too I currently got no wired phone since operators no longer offer them to private. Been thinking getting voip, but my internet tend to drop sometimes and would miss a call for it
-
I do not want put you down, but there is more to it than just starting up shell. Windows system files might be missing some api calls it depends on, Windows XP shell is tied to internet explorer which is slowly dropping on win10 (only MSHTML.DLL will be left) and it may and will cause compability issues. Also control panel and others would not work proper since new control panel that is replacing old one soon. Back in late 90s there was software called 98lite for Windows 98/ME that allowed replace whole ie based explorer shell with one from windows 95, but windows 98, 95 and ME were very close each other mostly different driver model and shell (that worked mostly same on every version) while Windows XP got lot code different to windows 10 and also win10 updates could break it. And I am aware there was inexperience patcher for XP that swapped win2000 stuff to XP, but original winxp was mostly Windows 2000 with pretty look until sp2 which made it closer to Windows server 2003. I am not saying give up with your project, but that will be huge project to reprogram everything to work proper and unless you would need plenty of programming skills, time and other while not violating Microsoft software licence way they could sue you. Perhaps one day you prove me wrong (I will be amazed if someone actually does it) but in my opinion it is better keep focusing what XP community been so far, backporting software and drivers to XP. only way you can get true experience is to run Windows XP. I have had multiple peoples asking if can have win7, XP or 98 shell on Windows 10 and I explained why cannot. Everyone seems want someone magically make their Windows 10 desktop be fully like XP that is like asking Saab 900 turbo experience on Tesla Roadster. Only way is to run Windows XP and using hw and sw compatible with it to get experience..

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Nokiamies replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Palemoon is slowly going firefox way due hostitle developer and recent stupid decisions example blocking addons like noscript since "security issues" or other stupid reason like mozilla, blocking XP support and trying make everyone believe palemoon cannot run on XP or vista. List would go on for miles but latest bad decision killing legacy ff addon support, for no good reason. But luckily like any foss software if someone takes undesirable path fork will appear without those issues. For Windows newmoon and also Mypal which address those issues. For linux there webbrowser that is palemoon without antifeatures. But otherwise it code is very good and it is more like what firefox used to be back in day before turning it bloat. I hope moonchild devs would stop being stupid on some decisions. it is due chrome optimised javascript. I generally browser very minimal amount of web these days mostly js blocked and if site refuses show me few text line without js I got no reason visit it. Some sites actually uses javascript to display text instead of using normal HTML I do not know from android side (nokia 6110 cannot run firefox ) but I used to have dualboot on my machine too. What I did was using profile manager made shared drive with custom profile accessible by both operating systems. That way I was able "sync" data between profiles. Of course that means need same browser on both sides, but that is one option. Not sure if can sync between New Moon and firefox somehow due code different.
