XP/Vista-compatible clients for modern email services?
dmiranda replied to Mathwiz's topic in Windows XP
Very nice discussion. I wonder if it would be safe to use outlook from MS Office 2007 professional. I use the (local) office products, not outlook (which I only fire up when I need to explore emails stored in old accounts different jobs forced me to use). This may make it worthwhile to try @Cixert's tutorial at Cheers! -
It does look quire complete. I forgot I'm using another button that I think came in the custom buttons addon I got from this thread, which opens about preconfigured to both open about: config on pressing the button, and allows to search for specific entries, preconfigured to look for extensions.yetanotheraboutconfighelper. This one you are now showcasing puts together that an the about pages as well. To a degree, the same concept as in pref toggler, which allows to switch on and off entries of my choice, thus consolidating many of the custom buttons you originally posted. Nice job!

Of course, (effectively) preventing (not so much with faking) fingerprinting means forgetting about social media and will result in systematic cloudfare (and other forms of fingerprinting) failure, unless you create exceptions in your defense (which defeats the purpose).

Hi. In sp52 I use CB button Restart & Purge and Pref Toggler. I would use About- Menu, but it won't work in sp52. I would welcome and try other buttons. Cheers!

It's an old discussion (among chromium users) on how and whether it is possible to avoid fingerprinting. My understanding is that it is impossible in chromium and (most) firefox derivatives. There are two routes in some firefox derivatives (not in official firefox). First: the look alike strategy, best accomplished by torbrowser, if you run it through tails. Second: be always unique (every time with new uniqueness) which can be achieved through arkenfox, specially when supplemented by proxying tor (and also best in tails). I don't think chromium (ungoogled or not) allows for (effective) use of either of those strategies. For supermium (including ublock and umatrix) the jshelter addon may be a good profilactic solution to resist most basic forms of fingerprinting. Be well. EDIT: I was able to tweak jshelter for use in old versions of mypal68 (vanilla), not anymore. But I haven't truly tried.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
dmiranda replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
For SP52 I use the latest ublock mod by Astroskipper. For Mypal68 I use the latest Ublock Origin build for Firefox. For Supernium I was using v. 1.55 for Chrome. Following your implicit prompt, I updated to to the latest build for chrome, and now YT works as I want it to be. Cheers! -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
dmiranda replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
In chrome derivatives that is true. Every other month or so, adds make their way back in. It happened today to me. [EDIT] Updating to the latest Ublock Origin build for Chrome (plus the settings below) solved my issues. I had forgotten to update it for too long a while. In serpeny52 (or mypal) it has been the odd add that slips in, and I mean for a couple of years, all with ublock filters mostly taken from the site suggested a while ago by @Sampei.Nihira: https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/wiki/solutions/youtube/ My additions from other sites and manual tweaking ! https://www.youtube.com (DM the following three added to get rid of chat altogether) www.youtube.com###chat www.youtube.com###chat.ytd-watch-flexy.style-scope ||www.youtube.com/live_chat? ! https://www.youtube.com - remove comments sections (DM added) www.youtube.com###comments > .ytd-comments.style-scope !adds stuff *_ad_$media,domain=youtube.com,3p www.youtube.com###main www.youtube.com###masthead-ad youtube.com###promotion-shelf youtube.com##.masthead-ad-control,.ad-div,.pyv-afc-ads-container ||www.gstatic.com/youtube/img/promos/$image www.youtube.com##div.ad-slot-renderer.ad-item.ad-renderer.pyv-promoted-videos:nth-of-type(n) youtube.com##ytd-display-ad-renderer:upward(ytd-rich-item-renderer) www.youtube.com##.ytd-banner-promo-renderer.style-scope.ytd-banner-promo-renderer-background youtube.com##ytd-video-masthead-ad-advertiser-info-renderer,ytm-promoted-sparkles-web-renderer youtube.com,youtube-nocookie.com##+js(json-prune.js, [].playerResponse.adPlacements [].playerResponse.playerAds playerResponse.adPlacements playerResponse.playerAds adPlacements playerAds) youtube.com,youtube-nocookie.com##+js(set-constant.js, ytInitialPlayerResponse.adPlacements, undefined) youtube.com,youtube-nocookie.com##+js(set-constant.js, playerResponse.adPlacements, undefined) ww.youtube.com##.sparkles-light-cta.ytd-in-feed-ad-layout-renderer.style-scope -

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
dmiranda replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
REF Vorapis: I kind of noticed an improvement in the loading of gif thumbnails (after removing all YT related UB static filters and monkey scripts, but nothing dramaticaly different to allowing only (in UB and Umatrix) youtube.com, www.youyube.com, gghpt.com, googlevideo.com and jnn-pa.googleapis.com (and blocking all google.com, google.com.x, doubleclick.net, and gstatic.com). While also keeping my lot of UB static filters, and two TM scripts that do not seem to do damage (Simple YouTube Age Restriction Bypass and YouTube CPU Tamer by AnimationFrame). I prefer that to vorapis, but that is my setup and my bias for knowing as exactly as possible what the code I run in the browser does. Cheers! -

For on demand, offline scanning of files, trendmicro works relatively well (although slow as expected in large full of data disks) with the following setup. Note that if you are not finicky about non portable stuff, you probably get the same or similar by using https://www.trendmicro.com/en_il/forHome/products/housecall.html which seems to run in XP and auto-update of patterns and definitions: o sysclean.com - the main executable module, you need to run it in a directory of your choice; while running, copy all the files that sysclean.com unpacks in the folder, including sysclean.exe, into a subflolder, close and delete sysclean.com and move the content of the created subfolder to the root folder . From then on, run the program using sysclean.exe. DOWNLOAD FROM http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/aupattern/tsc/sysclean.zip o readme.txt - basic, standard instructions for use DOWNLOAD FROM http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/aupattern/tsc/readme.txt o ssapiptn.da5 - spyware pattern file DOWNLOAD FROM https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=31®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 o lpt$vpn.XXX - malware pattern file (see Requirements) DOWNLOAD FROM https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=1®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 o ENGINE vsapi32.dll: there is an arguably outdated engine (9.750.0.1005) included in sysclean.com, also downloadable from With different results (depending on setup and happenstance), it can be updated using the 4 methods below. Use the one that suits you best. Downloading https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_engine&clkval=365®s=nabu, you can get (21.600-1005) Running housecall -https://www.trendmicro.com/es_mx/forHome/products/housecall.html- and getting new engine (22.610.0.1017) from user/local settings/temp), Downloading TM-ATTK, https://helpcenter.trendmicro.com/en-us/article/tmka-17906, unzip attk_ScanCleanOffline_gui_x86.exe, and get vsapi32.dl (22.610.0.1017) Downloading http://files.trendmicro.com/products/engine/VSAPI/21600/dll/VSAPI-NT-DLL-21.600-1007.ZIP you get the scan engine vsapi32.dll (21.600.0.1007) o Patterns (the ones in readme.txt and other not mentioned in readme.txt) that may work at: https://www.trendmicro.com/en_gb/business/products/downloads.html#all-pattern-files. The links to those files in said page may vary from setup to setup (VPN, DNS provider, DOH in browser, etc) so I also report the names. If the links below don't work, you can search and find and then download in the above webpage: Consumer Smart Scan Agent Pattern - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=51®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Conventional Enterprise OPR - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=1®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Damage Cleanup Template - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=11®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Network Virus Wall Pattern - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=19®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Smart Scan Agent Pattern - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=35®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Spyware Pattern - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=31®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Threat Discovery Appliance - NCCP - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=107®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 Threat Discovery Appliance - NCIP - https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=103®s=nabu&lang_loc=1 I now keep this portable on demand/offline scanner with clamwin (that can be supplemented with -I seldom use it- on the fly, kind of real time scanning with ClamSentinel), and Avast anti rootkit. MBB is out of the picture now. As per our host here, @AstroSkipper, other similar available products for XP are eScanAV Anti-Virus Toolkit (MWAV) or RogueKiller Anti-Malware Free. Be well!

The range proposed (maybe also the order/sequence of dlls, it doesn't hurt anyway) works well for me. It really makes a difference taming RAM peaks on launching (multiple pages) and together with other tweaks discussed in this (but also in @roytam1's) thread in preventing crashes and keeping browsing much more satisfying than otherwise. In my case, an altogether improvement. Cheers! PS: I run my profiles and swap fromRAM (8gb). Since rebasing I haven't seen an out of virtual memory crash anymore, so far (I've been playing with different ranges for the last month or two in all the browsers I use.

Very nice discussion. I use basilisk (form most work related and some casual surfing), mypal (for social media) and supermium (for whatever doesn't work in the other two). I have been playing with some of the ranges proposed here and in the supermium thread) and the following combination works well in my setup. As this discussion makes clear, free ranges may vary depending on your setup and the apps you run. Basilisk, I'm testing the range proposed by @AstroSkipper for mypal, 0x6af00000 Mypal, I'm testing the range proposed by @feodor2, 61D90000 Supermium, I'm testing the range proposed by @UCyborg somewhere in the supermium thread, a while ago, 10040000. So far, so good, much better than the addresses chosen by XP SP3 when left alone. Cheers!

Hi there. I retry this thing, and living the base forlder to default (somewhere in %USER% --> say myusers\me\syncthing) works well. Make sure that before running it you modify the following lines in %APPDATA%\Syncthing\config.xml <autoUpgradeIntervalH>0</autoUpgradeIntervalH> <upgradeToPreReleases>false</upgradeToPreReleases> <defaultFolderPath>%USERS@\ME\SyncThing</defaultFolderPath> <---

I can confirm that rebasing xul.dll (I also rebase mozavcodec.dll, libGLESv2.dll and nss3.dll) improves RAM usage by MyPal. I'm trying the address proposed by @AstroSkippernow, but I used it with other addresses with good effects as well. ALSO: running mypal in sandboxie (checl @Multibooter's thread in the general windows XP thread) is effective to prevent crashes when using more than a few tabs. Cheers!

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
dmiranda replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Well, after some digging I found out why these sites were out: for decades, I managed to browse and enter these sites as well firewalling off IGMP and udp (17) to remote (67) and local (68). Not anymore. liberating these connections (I can;t understand why should I, but so it is), I can now reach them again. -
I confirm mui cache is touched, sandoxie no matter. To see what else is touched I will later on test with RegistryChangesView and update this post. I tested a few programs, but beyond mui cache, couldn't find anything else. I wonder what causes this (and if there may be other registry items that can be touched). In terms of causes, configuring sandboxie [GlobalSettings] automatically asks you if you want to grant access to stuff like virtuawin, 7zipShellEx, fontchache, LogitechSetPoint and similar processes that may touch on every windows process. Of those, 7zipShellEx and fontchache have direct IPC direct access (if you aid yes to the previous question) and virtuawin, strokeit and others have IPC Windows Access [by the way, I see here a strange [#] itemI can't recognize and will get rid of to see what breaks or doesn.t]. For my use I have set up a mozilla sandbox that, after granting access to apps I do use in normal browsing and profile manipulation works fine (in fact, more stably than out of the sandbox as per my perception), except for the openwith extension when trying to connect to chrome, which I run in a separate sandbox. That is cool to me, but may be an inconvenience to others. I have finally a generic restrictive sandbox to test new versions of already tried software - for trying new stuff I always use a VM. Overall, it is a great addition. It ain't perfect, but surely reduces attack surface. Cheers again.

Hi @Multibooter, thanks for this thread. It's maybe a placebo thing, but I feel mypal68 and serpent52 (both with e10s) run more stably in a sandbox than without it. I still grant them access to my RAM profiles and usual download places, and sandboxie (restrictions-star/run access) allows me to approve specific programs to run (pdf printer, batch files I use to build my profiles, etc) them. With the settings posted by @XP++ AND the reg files suggested in the first post by you and @modnar (including reboot) I can run supermium fine (I agree in that granting IPC access is a big no, but that is the case running said program without a sandbox, anyway). In my case, the reason why the chrome sandbox remains active is because chrome.exe keeps running after closing the browser, and then two core sandboxie items remain active, even after killing chrome.exe (I do it through a batch file). Cheers!

Thanks for the update notice. I just updated from 1.54 to 1.59 and seems to work fine. I notice though that the option to purge filterlists is gone now... Was gone before? I will make time to check later on. Cheers! EDIT: In my customized profile, I had to uninstall 1.54 and then install 1.59, I couldn't update directly. It may be just my profile, though. You may also try enhanced_h264ify.
