This topic should probably be moved to the Vista section. At the moment, I am trying to use PE Maker to force the installer to work on Windows Vista, but I still get the error that it's Windows 7 or later. I changed only the SubSysVersion to 6.0. So far, I got NETFramework 4.8 to install on Windows Vista and applied the provided patch. I tried to launch a portable 4.2.12 version and the darn thing has an artificial blocker. Now, I am trying to modify paintNET to install on Vista. I honestly need a tutorial for this or something. 1) Get the paint.net 4.0 beta file 2) Force convert to MSI with BWC's KDW??? 3) Change minimum required version with PEMaker??? Could a hex editor help remove the block as well?

In theory, we could try backporting WPA_SUPPLICANT to Windows 98. It launches on Windows 98, but does not work. I recall another user tried making a wireless client, but it apparently didn't work (detect wireless adapters) properly. He disappeared and MSFN crashed, so we lost the software...

I recall having this issue a month or two ago. I would recall boingo would work, but would immediately disconnect if connecting to the web with a web browser. I believe I fixed this by using odyssey client instead??? I can't quite remember...

I just looked back at the topic a bit more...looks like Paint.NET 4.1.6 is a "no-go..." I will try to use version 4.0 and beta 4.0 versions to see if this will work later.

Hey MSFN! PaintNET has become my preferred art program because of the many wonderful plugins available! I was wondering if it was possible to do a simple tweak to get version 4.0 and later working on XP or at least Vista. I am hoping to get this working on a vanilla machine over an extended kernel for best stability. If we could get it working on XP, perhaps even 2000 with extended kernel could run it as well. The main issues are the program contains an official OS blocker. I believe I need to use Orca to fix that issue? I checked the dependencies and Windows XP is missing the IESHIMS.dll and WER.dll. Vista is missing the GPSVC.dll, and modules in IEFRAME.dll and SHLWAPI.dll. Would it be easy to patch these issues? I have no experience with dll dependencies and only had mixed experiences with placing Windows 2000/XP dlls in Windows ME to get programs working. My other experience with attempting to place Windows 7 files into Vista for Chromium lead to an endless loop of dependencies and files that would not connect to each other.

I personally prefer hjsuffolk14's service pack the best to use. I preserved it on my website. His service pack is honestly the least fussy in my opinion and includes main system updates.

Hey MSFN! I'm trying to get back into retro computing and Windows ME was giving me problems on my Precision M70, so I'm doing Windows 2000 on my Dell at the moment. It's such a great, solid OS that only needs some new software to keep up with its younger siblings! As the title says, what are the media players you would use on a vanilla Windows 2000 installation? I can't find information on the last version of KMPlayer, PotPlayer, MP-HC, etc. for Windows 2000. All help is appreciated! What do I exactly need to do with BWC's drivers? I extracted the .cab and tried to integrate with nlite, but the inf file does not appear to work once the file is created? Is there any bootable usb creator you could recommend as well? Rufus, WinUSBtoBoot, and ISO to USB aren't working for me. I used to just burn CD's and install that way, but my main PC's CD drive is broken.

Hello, I am trying to install Windows 2000 fresh with an SATA driver. I obtained one of BWC's drivers and found NLite did not appear to accept the driver? I tried extracting the .cab file and using both single driver and multiple driver folder, but neither appear to be effective. I need a bit of help with SATA drivers on Windows 2000. Should I use the universal ATA driver, BWC's, or Fernando's? Thank you for your time!

Hello, Installing the unofficial Windows Media Player 10 for Windows 9x ended up breaking my Windows ME installation, so I am wondering if it is possible to simply run rloew's ram patch through a live boot of FreeDOS (if there is one) or something similar. I am hoping I do not have to get my hands dirty opening the laptop to remove a stick of ram. Also, I do not have a floppy disk and my laptop does not appear to have a slot either. This is a very interesting concept. You mean something like VMWare Client Login (vmware horizon client)? In theory some sort of streaming Windows 10 might be possible to NT 4.0. I am trying to recall the title of one youtube video that ran Windows XP a very ancient machine, then streamed Windows 7 to the machine. But, NT 4.0 computers are gonna be very slow if they can achieve this.

So far... **BBFrance has attempted to backport Chromium 74 at least five times and the thing failed to work. **Obtaining the tools to even compile earlier versions of Chrome were very difficult. Though thanks to him, it's easier now. **Backporting Chromium 76 to Windows XP has been very difficult due to many new things dependent on Windows 7 or later API. **The Advanced Chromium Developer once released a Chromium 69 version for XP (link is dead), but had to remove hardware acceleration and web assembly. Apparently, a DirectX version included was too new for XP. **DoaJC_Blogger is still working on fixing the biggest issue: removal of GDI write. Chromium now uses DirectWrite 1.1, which requires Windows 7 or later. Vista uses 1.0. You can join his discord here. The main goal of porting Chromium to XP is so our data is not sent back to China. It would be somewhat annoying to have to dual-boot with Linux or Windows 7 or later, just to browse the web.

DoaJC_Blogger seems close to on this issue, but appears to just require restoration of GDI because Chromium requires DirectWrite 1.1. Maybe in theory, his version could have DirectWrite downgraded to 1.0 (Vista's version)? EDIT: WHOOPS! I did NOT see the post was from last year!

Which version? I recall Torch dropped XP/Vista support a while back. Also, there is the one-core-api project for XP for KernelEx

That is my site. However, you'll need to talk to DoaJC_Blogger because it's his project. Unfortunately, I do not believe we can make Chromium compatible with a Vanilla Windows 2000. The main issue I believe is the tools used for Chrome work for Windows XP or later (the archived one DoaJC_Blogger uses). The main issue he is attempting to solve is restoring GDI write to Chromium. I advise using the Chrome 69 version of 360 Browser because later Chinese browsers might be too new to even work on Windows 2000 w/ KernelEx at that point.

I believe I tested version 1.5. I do not recall if 2.0 works on Windows ME. 99.9% of the time, I test Windows 9x with a physical laptop. Both use Pentium M 7xx's. I just find virtualization too buggy and slow.

I found that camstudio works. Unfortunately, it seems my Windows 9x PC is just too weak to record the screen at a proper framerate though.

Has anyone figured out how to get WMP10 working on Windows 9x? I just upgraded to Media Player 9 from version 7, and Windows Media Player 10 by MGX causes the system to be stuck at the screen of configuring files (I let it go for at least 8 hours...).
