  1. Depends on how paranoid you are. I always recommend one regardless of the router, because of forwarded ports or *shudders* UPnP. Not as much a paranoia , having a software firewall (besides hardware) eliminates potential threats and applications an administrator does not want accessing the net. Hardware firewalls can only block by a series of ports , where as a software firewall blocks on a physical level. For a normal home user a simple firewall will do , and will prevent a significant amount of malicious threats , that some hardware firewalls do not detect. As I mentioned before... I will always support Sygate , regardless of Symantec's involvment , just as long as Symantec does not load it with useless software.
  2. Does anyone have any experience with avast! home edition? The problem I am having is that I connect remotely to this machine with PCanywhere, and now avast is blocking my connection. Where would I set a rule within Avast! to allow the connection? I checked the settings and I see no advanced options to allow specific applications.
  3. Switching from dialup to broadband is a common problem for most applications, as they are setup to look for a dial tone. There are several viable options: 1. Start MSN, do not sign in, and navigate to tools-> options -> connections. Run the tests. Check the Advanced options settings and clear all values out. 2. If the previous does not resolve the issue, uninstall msn messenger and download a copy from http://messenger.msn.com/ 3. Make sure norton is allowing msn messenger to send packets to the server, meaning the application should have an global allow rule set. Your router does not need any settings changed, for using msn messenger.
  4. Forgot to mention... if you register with the site make sure you use the link I provided, you will receive bonus points when you sign up. MSXSecurity Hacks
  5. Well his general question was answered, is it possible with his current configuration, no. However, if he wants to get involved with alternate resources such as VPN or the like he needs to purchase software or use some free software available on the net or just simply use Logmein or gotomypc which already incorporate the features. However, if you both own a linksys router (ie. SX41 or newer (any VPN enhanced router will do)) you can securely setup a lan to lan vpn connection. Then of course you will need to setup an account with a site as www.dyndns.org.
  6. What you should be doing is forwarding the DNS on your server to your ISP's DNS server(s). That way the queries within your network will be forwarded to the internet.
  7. Nope. However, you could use online applications such as LogMeIn, Gotomypc.
  8. I am attempting to setup a secureshell connection with ssh 3.2.0 and attempted Putty both installed on Windows XPPro, the DB server is also on XPPro. I installed the MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver and the following setup: MySQL_DSN MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver DSN localhost root ****** I try and connect with my ssh client and refuses the connection. I changed the settings to tunneling and the same appeared. I also disabled my firewalls and the built in sp2 firewall as well as making an acception rule and still Connection refused.... From what I see it should be working. Not to mention I added a remote user 'user'@'ip', which should allow me access. Any suggestions?
  9. An online Petition to secure the Privacy of internet users. I know the site is a bit associative with American's, more or less the author's point of view and just a bad choice in termonology, but will hopefully help resolve a debate talked for nearly a decade. Privacy is the right of everyone, not just us American's, therefore everyone should sign this petition to establish restrictions and fines for those intruding upon your Private data. http://www.americansdeserveprivacy.com/index.php

    XPize custom command

Just a note for anyone else, if you rigorously use command line networking XPize will slow you down.
  11. Is there any removal tool to remove the custom command prompt? Thanks nm, think I found it.
  12. build 5231 is an illegal distribution. It will not be discussed here until it has been officially released to us MSDN subscribers!
  13. Kinda hard to say from that, as they do not say whether it is or is not. I'll investigate further when I have time. Ummm ok... so who is "my license agreement"? Looks like AOL goofed up on there legal documents. So ya, that's a loophole. AOL can not refer 3rd party as "my" they need to specify the license agreement or refer the definition of "my" in the beginning of the EULA, which I did not see. Anyway, it's improper grammer.. in that sentence alone they refer to the user (you) that any alteration will void "my license agreement".. so who is "my"? However, very nice work.. almost starting to look like my (not refering to AOL) CD
  14. Awww... look at the perrty ferret.. Nice rug!
  15. If you want software... purchase it from a licensed reseller.
  16. It could possibly have something to do with your Phone software installed on your PC. You may want to role back to a later date when the software was not installed and try installing it again. Besides that, remove all the quick startup programs like WinZip, Nero, smtray and the Intel card. They are not needed to function. Do you even use Veritas software (i.e. Backup tools)? IE does not like 3rd party plugin's at times, suggest disabling 3rd party plugins in Tools-Internet Options-Advanced. 17. Use both secpol.msc and compmgmt.msc to efficiently set the policy.
  18. First you need to understand the principles of usage. Read up about it here and the correct functions being used.
  19. Quite possibly your PC is full of clutter. Try cleaning it up with software that trashes unused temp files and dead registry keys. The first move I would make. If you have installed / uninstalled, deleted, downloaded files from the internet or media the files are still present on your PC. Personally, I use Evidence Eliminator as it's the only software I know that detects and cleans every single registry key and tmp file, it's by far an advanced piece of software, but I would recommend looking for something more subtle as one wrong move with this software will destroy your hard disk drive. If anyone know's of a piece of software that may be less brutal and easier for a novice please let me know and the poster. You can do this while you search for a program that will efficiently clean your PC of that crap: 1. Check your PC thoroughly. 2. Download / Run a file sweaper (explained above) 3. Download / Run HiJackThis, 4. Doanlowd / Run SpyBotSearch&Destroy and spyware blaster, 5. I would also recommend installing SpywareGuard and keep it running as a resident service. 6. If you have more questions, run on over to http://www.wilderssecurity.com/, us Professionals hide out there Ummm, no I'm not advertising, just referring to the correct source. You may want to read this: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/cleansweep.mspx If non of the above improves, then I would reinstall your network card driverss. If all else fails contact your ISP.
  20. I would strongly encourage VMware over VirtualPC, not because VMWare is not Microsoft, it just functions better and manages resources better. However, there is an abundence of sandbox partition guides on the net. You may be interested in viewing some White Papers too. I hate to sound rude, but no reason explaining how to configure it when it's widely available.
  21. I wouldn't be too worried about it, unless you are infected with potential viruses or spyware. Check your PC thoroughly. Run HiJackThis, run SpyBotSearch&Destroy and spyware blaster, I would also recommend installing SpywareGuard and keep it running as a resident service. If you have more questions, run on over to http://www.wilderssecurity.com/ A virus can not install itself on your PC unless you tell it to. Some viruses (i.e. worms) use exploits such as a known buffer overflow to crash systems not infect them. Home users "generally" do not need to worry about this, most of these viruses (i.e. worms) are generated towards medium to large corporate domains.
  22. Sygate is by far the most advanced software firewall on the net for a reasonable price. Sygate has all the advanced settings and is always up to date, but not as efficient as a Cisco series (hardware) firewalls. "Professional" software do not need eye candy or a step-by-step walk-through. They serve there purpose. Zone Alarm and software like Outpost and Kiero have unnecessary features and are extremely bulky. They may be user friendly, but defeat the purpose of a firewall. Software firewalls should use no more than 25mb of memory, which is 1.5x the amount of a standard hardware firewall. If your a Professional or a savvy tech use Sygate. If you’re a basic computer user and need additional help on what features help protect your system and do not mind the extra memory, needed to operate, then I would suggest Zone Alarm or Outpost. However, Zone Alarm has been known to manipulate its own settings. Btw... a PIX-501e you just need to understand the logic
  23. This is exactly what they are saying. They need to trap light in order for the crystal to return. In this case they are using lasers. Lasers travel faster than light traveling through our atmosphere. They need a special component to slow down the speed of light, which in this case is a rare substance praseodymium, and who knows a cheaper substance just may be usable after several years of research. Question comes to mind... what if these scientists slow down light too much, would it create a vacuum? Regarding the 3million GHz CPU, doubt it will come to that, even for silicon cores, just imagine the heat radiating from it, beef pot roast anyone? Now, if someone were to build a computer that could trap, harness the energy of, light and reflect it in such a way that it never fades to efficiently conduct a charge, we just may have a quantum computer. In theory, there would be no need for memory, hard disk drives, a cpu or even fans to cool the machines, but I am not saying it would happen overnight either. The PC would ultimately be running forever and faster than modern pc’s until something breaks. Theoretically a PC running strictly on the consumption of light is possible, but when; is the question. Electricity is also governed by the same principles of light. The only difference is that electricity travels much slower than light. Metals contain different structures of atoms, which causes a flux in density (charge) as for conducting through copper wire is much slower than through a vacuum, but I am no numbers guy like you Hyper People also said we could not fly or even go to the moon and was scientifically impossible! Tell them, “Here’s an egg…. Be creative!”
