  1. And again, even though Explorer and other file tools show the space as used, SxS is not actually taking up file space on disk (they're hard links, for almost all SxS files, not actual files themselves). I wish Microsoft would fix this, only because it would stop the complaints of SxS taking up space when it in fact is not. Windows 7 is great compared to Vista... However, SxS, even for hardlinks, DO take up system resources and hard drive space 5000+ shortcuts add up. I've debated this with Microsoft several times and the usual response is Hard drives are cheap... the argument is moot, it's the fact of taking up unessential space. Then again... within the next 4-5 years Microsoft will be deploying yet another OS...

    Bitlocker

Gave that a try... I'll need to play around with it more and see what results I can get; otherwise with the system running, it errors out. As far as someone comparing Ultimate to Professional... 'Bitlocker' is not the only feature. VHD boot, which is NOT available on Professional, is all I needed and care for. All of the other W7U junk I dont care for being installed, nor do I want it on the system/image. I'm disappointed there is no option within Windows Programs/Features (Windows Features) to remove said components... the only practical use for bitlocker is on a notebook.

    Bitlocker

Been searching around for information on how to 'Remove' Bitlocker from the entire system... all I can find seem to be articles on how to disable and 'enabled' bitlocked device. I would like to remove it entirely from a working system.
  4. Anyone have any success removing the MUI Language packs? I've attempted the removal, with other minor adjustments, the installation errors out. Windows 7 Ultimate (32 Bit & 64 Bit) Edit: Just ran the Image file directly in vmware and the installation worked flawlessly again. However, if I attempt to run it from the DVD the following error occurs: Windows cannot install the required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files are required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070017 If I attempt to use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to create a USB image file it not recognized as a valid ISO file.
  5. Hmmm, question is have you ever tried to boot into safe mode... how does it perform there? Have you ran msconfig and ran the diagnostic startup then selective startup? Funny no one has mentioned this. Though a lot of these guys have a lot of experience with these OSs' thought I'd shoot that out there since it be my first attempt in troubleshooting Point in fact... W7 loads everything (process', icons, network connections, gadgets, etc...) in the background during the 'Welcome' screen, unlike previous versions of Windows. It's another one of those flaky features Microsoft claims as an "enhancement" when all they're doing is hiding whats going on in the background, to make it seem .... zippy. However, bigger improvement over Vista.

    Recycle Bin

Anyone know how to remove/hide then entries for 'Rename' , 'Create Shortcut' and the spacers from the Recycle bin context menu? HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} I can modify anything and everything but those... well 'Properties' too, but I really have no excuse to remove that entry. I've tried looking at third party applications such as shmnview and shexview, yet neither of these display the entries which need to be removed/hidden.
  7. Great post... lets not forget Host Resolution Priority. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider LocalPriority=(DWORD, recommended: 4, default: 499) - LN cache HostsPriority=(DWORD, recommended: 5, default: 500) - HOSTS file DnsPriority=(DWORD, recommended: 6, default: 2000) - DNS NetbtPriority=(DWORD, recommended: 7, default: 2001) - NetBT name resolution and WINS
  8. Anyone know where and how to enable the Windows logo key? I've search the net all over, digging up registry modificatioins which do not work, gpo entries (which do not exist on vista/7)... reinstalled the keyboard drivers, etc... etc... Just not sure how it became disabled in the first place, nor does my keyboard software have these types of settings to disable/enable such features.
  9. So, I upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit... so far I'm impressed with the speed over Vista. However, during the installation/upgrade process, Windows (as usual) 7... destroyed the permissions on folders and completely locked down some folders on the root drive that should have open privileges as well as my data drives. I resolved the problem with privileges and ownership with the following: takeown /F . /R /A /D Y > NUL icacls . /grant USER:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q That 'should' have taken ownership of ALL files, folders, documents (etc..); However, looking at the ownership it's still set as Administrator...... but now able to access the directories again. But I'm left with this irritating PADLOCK icon on the bottom left of every folder/file/document on the data drives. I've also noticed when creating a NEW FOLDER or NEW (FILE), that file is set automatically to 'READ ONLY' and the 'PADLOCK' appears, but still able to modify the folder. Also, if I completely remove the user privileges and leave the administrator privileges, which the user i'm logged on as is an administrator, I am locked out of the directory... and in order for me to view the contents of the directory I need to add that user back into the privileges. Previously, every single directory/file on the data drives only had 1 permitted user and that was 'Administrators' now... I'm just baffled as to why I can't access them being that this account is an administrator and if I want to read/write/modify (etc..) I need to add this user back into the security profile???!!!
  10. As topic states. Looking for a reliable Audio Loopback Driver for Vista 64... has anyone found one? Rather is be a free application, no trial or demo. Thanks
  11. Anyone know if it's possible to convert Vista 32bit msstyles over to work with Vista 64bit?
  12. Anyone know if it's possible to hide your MSN "Profile" status while online on MSN Live? I've noticed a lot of spam while i'm on msn and people are able to see my status via the profile page; like to be able to disable activity status on that page.
  13. Updated. So many downloads and only two thank you's... selfish people out there
  14. Maybe I should have named the title Vista 'MUI' ... besides
  15. You could RE and find out, if you do you can't use the same code otherwise it would be illegal usage. Also, for those who'll make pokes at stating RE is illegal, RE is no where illegal regardless of what a Program EULA states, as long as the person doing the RE is not writing for the usage of Circumvention and/or copying the exact code, which violates several laws under the DMCA. The sole purpose of legalizing RE is to achieve interoperability. 16. That comment is regarding 'Winsxs' itself... I'm speaking of the additional 'Languages' that Microsoft decided to install without the users approval.
  17. Anyone have suggestions on Removing/Uninstall vista languages from the System32/Winsxs directories? The default language is en-US... all the other (over 50) languages that are taking up diskspace. Regional Settings does not provide any languages to remove but en-US (English).
  18. Created several msstyles however, I'm unable to clean up the corners. I've checked most of the images and stream, but for some reason I'm missing where this is taking place. Could use some assistance with this... Thank you. Image: 1. Top Right (outside / inside), Left (outside / inside). One can see that the corners are still present and the corner border are lighter than they should be. 2. Bottom Right (outside / inside), and Left (outside / inside). You'll noticed a 4x4px block and the same as the top, borders are lighter than normal. Is there even a image number? Location of modified .msstyle http://www.msfn.org/board/Vista-RAW-Glass-msstyle-t123804.html
  19. Vista RAW Glass (includes teal line fix). Note: Top left and right corners display a slight pixel showing the rounded edges.. i'm trying to figure out why they're not completely square, not sure what file is causing this issue. Otherwise it's quite close. So if anyone has any tips what the issue is, please let me know. Readme/Install notes included in download. http://rapidshare.com/files/147884695/Vista_Aero__RAW_GLASS.rar RAW NS S2 GLASS Updated version. -No shadow -Thinned corners and screen edges -Squared the edges of buttons -Some menu buttons/toggles/checkboxes images credit go to Aazarah. Great work Includes VistaGlazz 1.1 Beta3 and DeskHack for Windows Vista - Version 1.1. http://rapidshare.com/files/164934132/AeroRAW_NS_S2_by_epic.rar Enjoy ~e
  20. The Teal border around the active windows is very annoying and doesn't reflect what TRUE glass looks like. Just from that border alone I've lost concentration and it also gave me headaches having to see this odd image in the corner of my eye. The same as what a pin hole (air pocket) in glass would do... So, I decided the FIX the problem, and make Aero (Microsofts default Vista visual style) look like what GLASS truely looks like. Someone at Microsoft needs to get out more and look at REAL glass. How do I know what REAL GLASS looks like? Several years ago I had the opportunity to work at one of the largest Glass manufacturing plants in the nation for nearly 3 yrs. Personally, I worked on the assembly line unloading and inspecting completed glass. Cathode production, silkscreen; REAL 52%+ Gold, Silver, Bronze, Titanium, etc... seeing these cathode bricks laying around was amazing, plus holding a real gold cathode bar in your hand worth tens of thousands of dollars was mind blowing, or a standard tint which is boring to look at. I've worked with raw, tempered and plate glass physically (probably one of most 50 dangerous jobs). I can tell you it's the best cardiovascular workout anyone could ever receive. Since you were probably asking... I'm sharing the fix with everyone. Feel free to share it! If you do share, please use the link I supplied in this post. Before & After pics. Readme/Install notes included in download. http://rapidshare.com/files/147869783/Vista_Aero__Real_Glass_.rar Cheers, ~e .
  21. Create a DWORD type as AutoShareWks with a value of 0. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters Name: AutoShareWks Data Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0 This will disable Vista automatically sharing ADMIN shares upon restart. Any shares that were personally created will no longer be deleted.
  22. Not sure what you mean by this, but I've checked the Policy settings and everything seem to be at their respective settings. This is a clean installation of Vista, no tweaks or anything, UAC is turned off.
  23. Could anyone provide me a solution as to why the network shares I create (compmgt.msc > Shared Folders > Shares) disappear and those that I stop sharing (administrative shares #$) are re-enabled after a reboot? Every time I reboot I need to re-share and disable the administrative shares.
  24. Not too sure, Vista is a bit slower even with a high end system. I'm currently trying Vista again and is definitely something someone will need to acquire a taste / feel to, this eye candy GUI and the new start menu program scroll is too lacking... Ok, so let's boot up. Select your profile and enter your password. Little Circle spinning stating Preparing Desktop, 5-10seconds, ok Microsofts way of stating "Oh your desktop loads faster". Well sure, after all the applications load in the background, mind you the "Preparing Desktop" screensaver is still displaying, then after those few seconds pass then pop your desktop is there. "Ooooo Ahhhh...." XP loaded much much faster without that "Preparing Desktop" gimmick. Heck, lets' just place the "Preparing Desktop" on XP SP4, XP will then load as fast as you can turn on the light switch!! Still several visual defects in the GLASS UI bottom and right borders of each window. I've heard stories from some stating "it's suppose to look like glass," Well, quite frankly "GLASS" doesn't have that affect, if you ever worked in a GLASS FACTORY and actually seen glass you would know this. However, glass does give off a slight HUE or TINT on the edges displaying the coat (color) applied to it, but it's a DARK abstract of the glass color... NOT a "BRIGHT TURQUOISE BLUE." With VISTA, regardless of what color you change it to it's this "BRIGHT TURQUOISE BLUE!" Someone at Microsoft needs to get out more, instead of feeding their idealistic taste of what GLASS looks like. Hmmm BRIGHT TURQUOISE on BLACK or GOLD tinted glass?! Don't think so... /EndRant A couple other issues I've discovered so far is the sequence at which VISTA restarts... Orb > Arrow > Restart ... Windows flickers to the login screen then back to the desktop, flickers a bit more... then finally states "Shutting Down"... didn't I just chose "RESTART"?! Soo, how about network sharing... wow what a knockoff... this is not what Microsoft "Claims" to be the simplest OS yet. Network sharing took me 15minutes to figure out and I'm very displeased by the friendliness, in order for me to share a folder from Vista to XP, I have to create the share > set everyone to the share permissions > THEN set everyone to the security perms, THEN make sure that directory is OWNED by the system administrator. Such a headache and a home user wouldn't have the slightest clue of what I just did. Secondly about Network sharing is after rebooting the system... the shares you removed (root$ shares) are back and the shares you've personally created are now missing. Plus side of VISTA is there is Tiize (XPero & Vertigosity). I'm a big Tango fan and used Tango Patcher heavily on XP. Strong dislikes of Microsofts so called artistic ability. So, I get a taste of a Real Desktop. For now I vote XP!
  25. Looking for a script or a application that will allow me to enter a UNC path of an application to install/upgrade. Ideally, I would like to enter the workstations name (ie. GRUB) then select an application (preconfigured) which this application will enter into the 'RUNONCE' registry. Once that user with administrative or power user rights logs on it will automatically run the application via the UNC path. Would also like to add / remove / modify UNC paths to those applications (if they change). Otherwise looking for some help to start me off with creating an application that will inject a UNC path into the 'runonce' registry upon request. Quick sample of what I'm looking for: User enters Hostname: GRUB -> User selects preconfigured installer / msi / exe to install run (ie. spybot search & destroy). -> Application / Script enters the selected preconfigured UNC path into the 'runonce' registry field. -> User logs onto computer with administrative privs. -> Preconfigured application (entered into runonce) runs before all services and applications are started. Questions or clarification, please ask.
