  1. The link you provided is not relavent to this issue, that link is a specific college directory access. Besides, I've never had to change security perms for /etc, its always been system. To add from my op: Problem occurs with applications installed on the C:\ drive. Permissions are there, WIndows is not loading applications as administrator, as they should be by default. Also occurs on applications: itype.exe and many others... in order for them to run correctly they must be run withing win+r with admin privs... shouldn't have to do this for anything, nor select each app and "run as administrator," since the user account is the administrator of the pc! Previous post regarding some applications NOT booting from startup (requested deletion as basically double post): Experiencing some applications not starting up during boot.I use gamma control to correct my old lcd display.http://desktopnerds.com/product-gammacontrolProgram is listed in startup and would not load on boot, so, I then added it within the Run entry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionApplication starts fine when navigating to the startup folder and manually launching it from there.Windows 8.1 Pro.
  2. I've been searcing for the fix, but everything I've tried doesn't resolve the issue. I forget what I had done on Windows 8 to lift this restriction. The account is Administrator, yet I'm still being prompted that I do not have sufficient priveledges. Take for example /system32/drivers/etc directroy. When I right click any file or just on a blank area within explorer, the context menu displays the blue/yellow shield. Also, if I try to edit, (ie: Textpad), any file within the directory it tells me access denied. In order to edit the files I need to either change the editor to run as administrator, or right click and run as admnistrator. Do not use UAC, it's completely disable. secpol.msc ; local policy / security options I'm sure there are other examples, but it's been a long while since I've encountered this issue and resolved it.
  3. Yeah, that may work, but the point is Google is being VERY intrusive on our workstations. Just because there is a EULA and we click accept, doesn't provide them the GODLY right to do what they want and whore our systems with useless junk as Geolocation and other privacy issues. Mobile apps are just as bad. The U.S. senate, obviously, needs to put some s*** into law with very strict penalties.
  4. Sure, it would have been nice to even have the ability to boot into repair mode. The upgrade was done from the desktop via windows store and there was no dvd/usb involved. Find it very silly the devs thought it best to remove safe mode as an option to enter during boot. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I just had to do a complete reimage with windows 8 and upgrade from the store again.

  6. How about adding a modifier to this reg tweak, say ctrl + left click?
  7. Avoiding having to 'install' fresh again. The installation went fine and installed tons of software. The problem happened after adding "Features" ... I should be able to boot into safe mode to disable the features and everything ought to be ok, but I'm unable to because microtarddevs removed safe mode. What are my options people? Thanks.
  8. Unable to boot into Windows. Decided to try Windows 8.1 that was collecting dust on a new ssd drive. Configured the system, install went fine, but after activating Hyper-V in "Features" and upon reboot it was hanging at 30% install. Power went out, due to me renovating, and rebooted the system. Now Windows is stuck on "Working on features 70% complete Don't turn off your computer." ... Unable to access ........ 'Safe Mode' .... Yes, I turned off my puter after about 30 minutes of it just sitting on 70%. Still stuck on 70% ... Need some assistnace. Thanks. why the FUCK did microshit remove safe mode #$%^&*(
  9. Hmmm, not really. He really sounds like another Pesala from the Opera forums. Pesala is a total buffoon. Right, he knows it. Developers moving on to rely on Chromium as the Opera engine are total idiots. Not only that, it proves the fact that these developers are nothing but lazy s***bags. They've dug Opera's fate into the ground, by listening to, single minded drones, Pesala, and not the actual users of the software. Presto is/was awesome, if Opera had listened to the consumers Presto would still be around and BUGS FIXED and full of USABLE features.
  10. I see no reason why anyone would want to rant about an actual... improvement? That's not new information and nothing to do with Windows 8. It's been out there since XP. Its just that MSVP just woke up and decided to change it, and, NOW, it's a huge victory for him and other sheep in his stable, it's like they're all drinking the same cool-aid or something. The 0.0.0.0 information has been out for YEARS! That's why there is DNS, lmhosts Anyway, 127.0.0.1 caused system hang ups, during boot, with large hosts files. The usual fix was to change the loopback to all 0's or slim down your hosts file. Another plus changing the loopback to 0's shrinks the hosts file, too.
  11. Do you know the differences between Presto and Chromium? If not delve in, differnces are quite obvious. Opera hasn't always been present in mobile devices... they were dead last, even in alphas and betas. In short, without specific details, the order of appearance to the world: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, (Forks: Comodo, etc.), Opera. You're also seeing this single-mindedly, Opera developers objective is to streamline NuCrap browser to the mobile world, NOT the desktop world, and piggy back their demise off of the success of the Chromium project instead of continueing to provide a UNIQUE browser to us consumers (By this I mean Opera Developers are lazy and mooching off of other developers successful platform for their pathetic success), Opera Developers could have stuck with Presto and made it BETTER, SLIMMER, MORE RESPONSIVE, but THEY CHOSE NOT TO, rather DITCH PRESTO. There are no touched optimised versions because NuCrap hasn't done s*** to optimise the code until Chromium developers optimise it for them. I guarantee this is exactly what they are waiting for. You're failing to see the point. OR trolling. In fact, I believe you are, blatently spinning my words and suggesting I claimed NuCrap is totally Optimised for tablets, etc... obviously not understanding the point I'm making and know nothing about Presto and Chromium, and yet you bring Internet Explorer (Where the F.... did that come from?) into the discussion. My original post was NOT about tablets, it is about a unique browser platform (Presto) which Opera decided to ditch in a impulsive manner and abandoned desktop/workstation users.

    Context menu icons

So, let me get this straight... Anything within: *\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\*Is considered to be pointing to an ICO within the applications dll? If so, pretty straight-forward from there. What about ICO's that are handled by Windows? (also: paste, cut, copy, etc... Windows context ICO) Though, when removing the entries from the main context menu (ie: above), how can I tell the difference of a sub-menu entry? *like to keep entries as these (ie: below)

    Context menu icons

Thanks for the info. I read through those pages and it seems like a heck of a lot of work. I'm not into customizing Windows anymore, as in the past, just looking for a quick fix to remove unnecessary, if not all, icons from Windows context menus. As for handlers in the applications interface, majority of applications out there don't make available the option to hide/remove the icon or the applications preferences, the only way to remove either is to uninstall the applications entirely.

    Windows 8.2

I suspect with this update, as with 8.1, that users will need to reinstall Windows fresh again and all their personal settings and applications would be wiped. *Great move Microshaft.
  15. Anyone know how, tested-working, to change the color of inactive applications / windows within Windows 8? I've seen many questions about this, but no one has been able to give a clear answer. Changing the registry values does not work, nor is there an entry for Inactive. Older versions of Windows users had the ability to change color state of windows (fully customized).
  16. What annoys me about chrome is googleupdate.exe , remove it from task scheduler, remove it from startup, disabled in chrome preferences, but the minute you launch chrome it adds the entries back into the system without the user authorizing it. there is a specific reason I REMOVE googleupdate.exe from windows startup and the application startup and chrome, google, doesn't reserve any right, even after initially accepting the EULA, to reinstall googleupdate.exe .........
  17. It's quite obvious that they're catering to tablet/touch devices, rather than the standard desktop user. They're also reducing overhead from having two different platforms of Opera and squeezing as much junk as they can into one browser for both mobile and desktop platforms into Chromium. Not to mention so-that-their-miniscuale-fanboy-crowd (couple dozen) could use and download apps from the cloud (that's another bs thing), app devs had to create different versions of their "cloud" apps to operate with the old Opera, and, obviously, the Opera developers couldn't implement those features in the Opera platform so they moved to Chromium. Chromium doesn't even have the ability to facilitate windows within windows, it's an entirely different engine. Opera had it and it was great. "Chromium" is NOT Opera and never will be! Opera is an entirely different platform and the idiotic develoeprs at Opera ditched the platform. Why do you think so? Not that I like the current UI but in my opinion it's very FAR from being optimised for touch. I've used a lot of browsers on touch screen devices (Android and Windows) and the best experience was offered by... Metro IE. It's the only browser that I can say to be fully optimised for touch. You use gestures to navigate, can switch between tiled tabs very easily, etc. All of the other ones feel like modified desktop versions where some elements are bigger, others removed but in the end you still need to click (tap) on very small area to navigate. What I mean is this: 1. Chrome (Android). There are a lot of small elements used for navigation. This isn't something I'd call touch optimised. 2. Firefox (Android). Better than Chrome but still buttons are too small and too close to each other to navigate comfortably with fingers. Now look at Metro IE. This is something that's really nice to be used with touch. All in all, I don't think the changes inside Opera have anything to do with the tablet market...
  18. Personally, I think Opera is going in the wrong direction. Opera held a very unique position in the browser market. Users has the ability to customize tab location (tiles: verticle, horizontal, etc), ability to customize the entire browser look, and the list goes on. No other browser on the market could tile and organize tabs as Opera could. With the release of Opera 15, sadly these features are no more. Thus... forcing users that want those features to use old outdated versions of Opera. My spew... Opera 15/20 is s***. It's hogwash. The Opera development team blatently took code from the Chromium engine and labeled it Opera. Removed features that were VERY useful (tiled tabs, etc.). Seriously... MUTIPLE TABS TILED VERTICAL / HORIZONTAL helped in business... being able to monitor multiple routers and scripts at home from multiple sources all at once, WITHOUT having to tab over to the next tab. Ludicrus! So now, in order to achieve the aforementioned, I'll need to have 6-8+ Opera.exe's open (Hmmm Memory hog!! guess I'll have to get 64gb of memory), instead of the 1 browser and 6-8+ tabs. 1. TILED TABS (Opera 12.16) Very productive browser. When at work... tiled tabs could be reach 16+ on a 46" monitor, monitoring mission critical data. 2. TILED TABS (Opera 12.16) Screencapture doesn't do any justice to show how useful tiled tabs are.More complex setup, better views at higher resolutions and large displays. Res: 1920 x 1200, 2560 x 1600, +Opera Developers were developing a very unique platform 3. Tab Options (Opera 12.16) AWESOME LAYOUTS!Need I say more?! 4. SETTINGS (Opera 12.16) Preference panel was useful. 5. Opera 18.0 (Opera 15, original Chromium release) Notice the waste of monitor space (white space)... no need to have settings horribly spread out. Very poor project management.Tabs are the same as every other browser out there. No Windows within Windows... no tiles... no cascading... 6. TAB OPTIONS (Opera 18.0) No options to tile tabs.Create folders for tabs.Customize tabs.Etc, etc.. etc..... 7. SETTINGS (Opera 18.0) Notice the waste of monitor space (white space)... no need to have settings horribly spread out. Very poor project management.Officially talking about LAZY OPERA DEVELOERS. Certainly Opera is catering to the Tablet market and, again, ignoring the business and home user who use browsers entirely different than a tablet user ever would. The same concept Microsoft has done when implementing Metro and removing the Start Menu from the Operating System. Metro is useless in the business Market and has no value what-so-ever, the same for the home user (IMO), Metro is a tablet feature only and should have been introduced and developed that way only and packaged as a feature that users could add or remove from the system. Anyway, this thread isn't a Windows 8/8.1 rant. Opera is done in my book. IMHO. Guess I'll have to use the last version before this terrible upgrade, unless Opera developers decide to clean up the interface and implement useful features into newer versions. Edit: Typos
  19. My head will explode ranting about W8. Where is the rant thread about Opera 18/20? No more tiled browser tabs, the new engine is a blatent ripoff of chrome!!
  20. Great work. I'll give this a shot, though, I'm not a fan of Windows Vista/7 "Glass" cough ... ps. Microsofts idea of "glass" (imaginary glass - someone at Microsoft never visited a glass manufacturer to see what real glass looks like - glass doens't have "rounded" corners, glass is tempered which then is shaped to have round edges due to the laminate and heat added to the product which adds strength properties, but then as all glass manufacturers will say its not "glass" it is "tempered glass" ... there is a ginormous difference!! "glass" is raw and has very sharp defined edges. You can cut an artery on that!)
  21. I tried Windows 8 during beta and wasn't impressed with the fact that Microsoft removed the Start Menu completely from the system. Seriously. There is a Start Menu in most every OS on the market and it's by far one of the most heavily used tools for an OS, and for a NON-TABLET / NON-TOUCHSCREEN device... it's tedious to navigate without it. But, then, I discovered Stardocks Start8 and coughed up the $6 for unlimited updates to a seemless replication of the Start Menu and still have doubts about Windows 8 though, I have noticed that vmware seems to run very sluggish and often hangs the host computer in Windows 8 compared to Windows 7. In Windows 7 I was capabale of running 4 vm's simutaniously, but in Windows 8 I can only run 1 vm, not to mention I had dwm.exe disabled on Windows 7, but you can't disable it in Windows 8 and I've seen dwm.exe spike to over 2gigs of mem in 8. Personally, I think Windows 7 is faster in some areas, granted that UAC, dwm.exe and a few other services are disabled. I tried 8.1 and wasn't impressed with the so-called "Start Menu" is back, useless Metro (ought to be a feature to turn on/off) a blatent ripoff of Apples menu, useless and annoying apps that are forced fullscreen and no option to resize them (ought to be a feature to turn on/off, and/or COMPLETELY remove them), So I'm still using Windows 8 with Start8 until Microsoft gets their heads out of their sundontshine. In all I'd give Windows 8/8.1 a 6 out of 10. Despite the fact that they blatently ignored the dominant market, home / office desktop users. Absolutely see no way how anyone can be productive with business applications and me heavily using Revit for work , school and my other apps without the desktop and start menu. Seriously, what were they thinking when they wanted to do away with the "Desktop" and "Start Menu" ... I'd say Microsoft has the most unaware project manager ever.
  22. neato.... looks similar to my recycle bin context menus.
  23. Anyone know where in the registry someone can remove icons for items in the context menu? I see no ico listings under: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DirectoryHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\
  24. The Atom system is what I built to replace the dell system. The XP COA is still on the dell system. As for going from IDE to SATA, that's not an terrible issue especially with Acronis cloning and if I had hardware compatibility issues one can always download and update the drivers. I guess I could re-clone the drive and run the repair module from the CD.
