  1. thanks phoenix.. I registered. Wish I could figure out my original mail account info... made the password and secret Q too hard for even myself to figure it out, heh.
  2. Well, in some countries it's done in tradition, sign of respect to kiss a man on the lips. But then again... weird people taken it way tooo far and need to locked up in a nut ward.
  3. Richard Pryer "The man who started it all!" No one is as great as he is and never will be. and George Carlin Robin Williams
  4. Thanks, SovereignScorn! Heh, never even tried that. I zipped it to make a backup, but never bothered renaming it. Of all the stupid things Microsoft does.
  5. Question for you guys... How would I replace the uxtheme.dll on Windows which is currently installed? I tried safe mode and through the prompt but continue to get a error that it is currently being used while overwritting it. ?
  6. Should always disconnect an internet connection, reboot then run your antivirus program with NO connection to the net. Reboot, the clean again at the boot prompt. If that doesnt work... consider doing a low format and reinstall windows.
  7. Hmpff.. beat me to it. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
  8. Hmm, that's a tricky one... would it be the cable for the mouse?
  9. Well, it's probably Norton (if you have updated everything). Go figure. Norton stinks... Actually, 65,554. However, some ports are not ever used- there just there. But here is good list to work with to get a general idea. http://www.networksorcery.com/enp/protocol/ip/ports00000.htm
  10. It's PPPoE, but the gerneral idea of PPPoE is to regulate service between the service provider and the end user and mainly based for DSL not Cable internet. It's not commonly used and many companies still use it. It really depends on where you live. I know for a fact that Charter, MediaCom and Time Warner do not use PPPoE, well Time Warner is trying to get rid of it for its DSL customers.
  11. and faily illegal if you go over the US FCC rating of 32DBi, which by default most WiFi's are set to 18-24DBi (i think).
  12. lvlolvlo- that firmware is only for Broadcom based routers. The BEFSR41 is nearly 4years old and is not equiped with a Broadcom chip. It will kill the flashrom . firmware version 1.50.9 was never released but fixed major flaws with both BEFSR41 & BEFSX41 with traceroute and ping killing the router along with adding unexplained reboots . Firmware version 1.45.7 has been the most stable version for both of these routers. I would give that a shot and see what happens. However, reseting the modem like Astalavista noted may do the trick. Let it sit for about 3-5minutes with no power after you set the reset pin in. If not try the 1.45.7 firmware and see what happens.
  13. Get a photoshot of your cable modem signals or copy and paste them here. TX (Transmit) RX (Receive) type: 192.168.100.1 in your browser to bring up the cable modem interface. However, it could quite possibly be the firmware of that router. BEFSX41 & BEFSR41 have had problems with the last 2 versions of firmware. There is a fix in a unreleased copy, but I need to look for that.
  14. To disable telnet / http (80): Go to Start -> Run -> services.msc /s -> Enter Scroll down until you see a listing for Telnet and stop/disable the service. Scroll down until you see a listing for IIS (Internet Information Services) and stop/disable the service. Here is a good resource to follow up with, there should be a link there for services. I have not checked it out for ages. http://www.blackviper.com/
  15. This is better... http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
  16. Personally, I have used a few anti-viral software on the market; to name a few: Norton, Panda, AVG, TDS, and Mcafee. I use to be a BIG Mcafee skeptic, until after I used it. They all have had pro's and con's but Mcafee has done wonders and usually picks up on new virus' before any of the other markets, other markets always seem to fall behind Mcafee. Norton I really do not like as the program installs a lot of junk and has caused a lot of network issues and missed several virus' even in safe mode. Mcafee caught them and cleaned them. As for firewalls, I would not recommend ZoneAlarm nor Nortons version. They are a hinderance to your system a false positive. if you are looking for software firewall either go with Mcafee or Sygate. However, when I purchase my AV and firewall protection I usually go out for the enterprise product line. I have used home versions and never had a problem with them. Just seems to me now days all the added features are mostly marketing gimics to purchase there software. Cant really say they do not work... *cough* norton.
  17. 802.11b will reach more than 100 metres (300 feet) however it cannot be achieved with 2.4GHz over congested obstructed paths. So due to signal degradation the reliable distance through air is only 50%; 50 metres (150 feet). Also, if using a 2.4GHz WiFi router keep in mind it's best to use a 900MHz portable phone. The frequencies between a 2.4MHz WiFi and 2.4MHz portable phone will collide with each other, since they operate on the same radio frequencies.
  18. What model of Linksys? What type of service do you subscribe to DSL/Cable/Dialup/ISDN?
  19. That would be my thought as well. Change the passphrase and create multiple admin accounts with specific privileges assigned to each individual who needs that specific access. No need to have 1 admin account to globaly do changes. There should only be 1 superadmin. Btw... always use 8-12 characters with symbols (i.e. o12fr@nce^$k)
  20. The "better" browser? Depends on what your surfing usage and computer literacy rounds to. Both browsers & mail clients have Pro's & Con's between them. Firefox has a multitude of extensions & themes (i.e. adblocker*****, Sage feed reader, and other great tools). What I like about Firefox is that these extensions are integrated into the shell; unlike IE. Tabed browing is the best feature. prathapml is right about Firefox being a _crippled_ application. No community is really out to strike it down as fast as Microsoft products, therefore flaws are not as noticeable and is not discredited as often. It's a very SIMPLE application as more or less dumbyfied. I like the simplicity of it. However the issue with IE is that most hot headed users want to bring MSFT down and discredit them for their technology & constructive critisim. IE is a very useful application and is the most secure browser on the market when used correctly. It's the people that say something is better 'fan_boys' when in fact the reason they are fans is that they are too **** lazy to set security settings on a windows machine and expect everything to work at default settings. IE is not id*** proof no computer or application is. I still believe you need a license to operate. My analogy is if comparing Windows vs G5 for photo and video editing and tell me that windows does a better job... you better buy a G5 and find out yourself. No matter how much you tweak windows it will never display photos and video as crisp and clear as a G5 (or any apple). It's comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I stick with Firefox/IE & Outlook 2003 @ home and IE & Outlook 2003 @ work. I switch between browsers at home since some sites actually display better with IE. On a side note, just move to a Mac and your problems will disappear. I have used my girlfriends mac for 3years and no application has ever crashed since it came out of the retail box.
