  1. I've never took the time to even consider disabling it. However, much like the previous version's you still the ability to disable it, hardcoded, maybe. Have you attempted to check the loader for a wav (or similar dat file) string ?
  2. Umm, Ok. So you're complaining about how much half a Terabyte costs, compared to, lets say 5 years ago?!
  3. Have you played around with the privacy settings? Set them back to defaults, If not try adding the sites to your trusted internet sites.
  4. Let's restate: GET ETHEREAL. These guys are helping you out, listen, Ethereal or any packet sniffer, that requires the install of WinPCAP, will give you the ability to track packets WITHIN a LAN; regardless of how you are connected (hardwired network device or wireless wireless allows portability and a larger range to scan).
  5. So, whats the point in calling the beginning of development Alpha? You young pups think you can change the rules... RC has NEVER been considered a full fledged beta... it's always been considered the final stage before production. It could take 2-3 releases until the final RC is even available. Besides, a Release Candidate is tweaking the small bugs and renduring issues, not fixing big issues that 'should' have been resolved during beta such as UNC / UAC; let alone the huge domain issues. Where are you getting your idea's from? I work with Top Breed developers and we have always submitted bugs to Microsoft, not just us but hundreds of thousands, but Microsoft has their own idea's and never listens completely. I'm starting to think my time has gone to waste (hell, that's every month I deal with Microsoft), the linux community works and listens better than Microsoft does, besides we're speaking about a Corporation that plagiarizes and copies idea's from other developers claiming it as their own. Please...
  6. To set things a bit straight... RC1 (Release Candidate) is the FINAL beta release before it's put into production, technically it's no longer beta it's RC! A Release Candidate is 'suppose' to have every known major bug resolved, before it's release. Does Microsoft play the game? Nope... Microsoft think they can change the rules and make the ignorant even more dumber. UAC and UNC Paths 'should' be recognizeable well before RC1's release, Yet, it's still broken. This is a Big problem and it seems Microsoft overlooked one of the most obvious issues. Heck Vista doesnt even recognize my Domain Trusts and forests even when it's specificly enforced. Though I have to admitt... Vista has a luring feel; even for a net admin.
  7. Looking for some input regarding beta 3 to disable some of the extensive security features. I just installed the new release this week (haven't spent much time analyzing it) and noticed that some applications will not load unless I manually select "run" from the dialog box, maybe it has something to do with file signatures. Has anyone located the setting within explorer to disable this option? Another annoyance with this is the security banner loading above the header of a webpage along with the blank page displaying "Your security setting level puts your computer at risk" (same as header). A large annoyance when you set the browser to a custom security level. Any way to supress this banner and startup page, besidse supressing it for downloading of files and activex files? Just noticed a forum specifically for IE beta... please move.
  8. nope... it's just a conspiracy There is no such thing as a 110% fool proof system... and never will be. Every OS has it's flaws, linux is not even a worth while application, if installed on ANY production server or workstation developers need to recompile the kernal for their general use, which can take days and years to maintain, unlike a managed system like a base unix and windows system. Tooo much overhead for a linux system... you can throw around the bias statements stating its the best and faster, which is completely false.
  9. To be honest internet was created well before 1968. Inline topic, Vista is a huge change from the current Windows OS's. Just seems the poster has no clue what a beta release entitles to an official release. Say the least... if everything was free you wouldnt have the techonology you can place in your pocket nor the programers to haveing enough ambition. Linux is Open source and the overhead is greater than UNIX and Windows placed together in a production environment... It's no where near a UNIX base system and UNIX systems overhead is just as great as a Windows base system. There is no proven documentation stating LINUX is faster or more reliable than a Windows product.
  10. A colleague of mine sent this to me, thought I would share. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5943582546148919558
  11. I tend to stress to consumers not to involve themselves with Ad-Aware... the software is known to flag legitimate applications as viruses and spyware. As you stated you use MS AntiSpyWare, Spybot SD, I would recommend using SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard with Microsofts antifpsyware and SpyBot.
  12. If this is for a business, large or small, I would recommend Cisco's Pix 500 series. I have not heard many comments regarding sonicwall, but for the few that I have, said they were robust. Recently, for the past year, I have been looking at Sygates Professional services (On demand, specifically). You're not going to find a cheap and reliable firewall application.
  13. Really now... Quite interesting from someone who does not even know who I am. Hmm... You must have missed the point where I stated "If this is a Microsoft keyboard, do you use the office functions? If not disable them from startup." Definition (Common language for administrators) sus·pi·cious Pronunciation (s-spshs) adj. 1. Arousing or apt to arouse suspicion; questionable: suspicious behavior. 2. Tending to suspect; distrustful: a suspicious nature. 3. Expressing suspicion: a suspicious look. Apparently you are not aware that there are viruses (freely available) which copycat these exact files. Besides, disabling, if not all, 3rd party applications (that includes startup applications!!!) while detecting for viruses is the most crucial part of administration, which is why it's suggested 100% of the time to scan virus' in safe mode, hence no 3rd party applications load. If you're at all a professional you would have already known that. Heh. So, please step down from your self appointed professional status. It's people like you that give REAL administrators a bad name. I also assumed DL knew this information and assume most people do, but since your laying out the most obvious information, i'll just let it be. If you have any insightful information, post it, which you have not. My appologies DL.
  14. Is there a reason for the IP address set in the hosts file? I see no point in having an IP set in host unless the user uses it as a simple name resolution to an outside source, but from you're saying it's not. Try removing it and see what happens in a few days. Well, windows task manager does not show everything and not a very useful tool. Most all virus' hide themselves from the system task manager and are undetectable by simple applications. Sysinternals have devleloped advanced tools that all admins should have. Autoruns, PMon, Handle, PsList, Portmon, check the description on their site for more detail (Processes & Threads). You also stated the user notices an installer running or an msi installer. The only way you can detect it is by monitoring file access to the drive(s). Diskmon, Filemon, PsFile, located under (File and Disk). Security Task Manager is also a great tool.
  15. I believe DU Meter offers a simular function.
  16. First things first... get rid of AVG, very unreliable software. Alternative's: Nod32 (ESET), has a free 30 day trial of there product and fully functional. However, you will need to uninstall and install it, every 30 days, to continue to use it. Avast, also has a free version, basic, you need to register the product twice in the first year and once every year after, to continue using the product. Secondly, I noticed several applications running at startup, which are suspicious files. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [POINTER] point32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliType] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Keyboard\type32.exe" What mouse and keyboard are you using? If this is a Microsoft keyboard, do you use the office functions? If not disable them from startup. O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{550C92A7-A0C2-4D7A-A08C-08F01513D868}: NameServer = 65.199.236.17,65.199.236.10 What is this ip address? This could possibly be one of your problems (O17=domain hijackers). Besides these mentioned I see nothing wrong. However, there are a few other items I would remove, besides the ones listed. I also noticed you have several anti virus products, AVG and Kaspersky, installed on the same machine. Very bad... if you have doubts about a virus scanner not detecting malicious software, then uninstall the application and install an alternative. Finally, if you are unable to detect malicious software, under the standard configurations, then you need to start the pc in safe mode and detect for the malicious threats. Rootkits are made for safe mode only, but do work under standard configurations (sometimes). Also, disconnect the infected pc from the network before scanning for malicious software. Use, software (ie. McAfee S.t.i.n.g.e.r.) that load only into memory and scan for virus if you know in fact your pc is infected.
  17. Replace the manufacturers driver with a generic cdrom driver and you will be fine.
  18. Did you have service before you purchased the router? If so, there is the possibility the router is faulty. What I would do is upgrade the firmware (check the manufacturers website), and double check the physical connections and configuration settings. If the router persists with disconnects, it's faulty, I would return it for the same brand or something else. When you refer to the length of the cable being 10m, what type of cable are you speaking about? Is there a cable laying on the floor or stapled to your wall? Is this the cable coming from your house (CPE) to the node?
  19. Nope, it's required to install the AOL software to dial into their network. However, you can minimize AOL and use 3rd party applications as, IE, Mozilla, etc. etc.. You can also try AOL Connect.
  20. Your hosts file should not be blocking any sites, unless, if someone or a virus changed the settings. open in notepad C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc (XP) C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc (2k)
  21. Dyndns.org is a great option. You may also want to look into no-ip.com... If any of these machines are unix base, you could create a cron job to email you the updated ip.
  22. This is caused by malware, which has installed itself on your pc, run hijackthis, check for invalid entries and suspicious files (google them if needed, research). Install antivirus software and spyware applications on your pc as well. Scan your pc for antivirus' and spyware and remove the invalid entries, also run a registry cleaner. Requirment for all Home user's: SpywareGuard (Resident Protection) SpywareBlaster Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware Registry Cleaner
  23. Sounds like your tcp stack is corrupt. Uninstall and reinstall, should solve your issue.
  24. Hi all , I have been attempting to disable WFP on 5.1.2600.2180 , but with no success. I changed the offset values in SFC.dll , sfo_os.dll and changed SFCDisable to ffffff9d , which *should* have disabled WFP. I know there was a thread about WFP on the forums and a tool was available to disable it without having to change anything , but unable to locate it. Besides , I would not think that it's up to date. Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian
