  1. maybe in version 2.2 or even 2.5 of 98SE SP Gape might want to include the MS Active Accessibility 2.0 files: msaatext.dll ver. 4.2.5406.0 oleacc.dll ver. 4.2.5406.0 oleaccrc.dll ver. 4.2.5406.0 use the setup.exe, msaa9x.inf, MSAATextA.dll, oleaccA.dll and oleaccrc.dll files to install the MSAA 2.0 files. And another inclusion for the service pack is the wmi9x.exe file, which installs Windows Management Instrumentation version 1.5 for Win98se. let the SESP installer run wmi9x.exe file with the /s switch as this .EXE file is a self-extracting WISE installer. The /s switch installs WMI 1.5 silently. then after running "wmi9x.exe /s" the WMI 1.5 updates Q282949 and Q285895 can be installed on top of WMI 1.5.
  2. the ME fixes I sent to Petr have been sent from him to MDGx. see "New 98 FE + 98 SE + ME patches available" topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=46581 the Q271434 opkfix.cat fix is for some OEM versions of ME only and does not apply to retail versions of ME. The retail (upgrade & full) editions of Windows ME [ones that come from the ME product boxes] dont have the problem and the fix is worthless under those editions.
  3. another good reason why the dsound.dll file (4.07) should either not be included in the 98se SP or the pack should not install that file if DX8 or DX9 is installed under Win98se. I sure like to see vip.386 version 4.10.2227 included in the next release of SE SP. and I would like to see the pack display a dialog box asking whether or not to un-install the 98se SP. Double-clicking on SE SP in Add/Remove programs uninstalls the pack immediately, without prompting the user whether to uninstall the pack or not. that's kinda dangerous since one time I accidently clicked on the uninstall SE SP entry in Add/Remove programs on a Win98se machine. ouch!
  4. at this time, no. maybe in January 2006 if I determine the benefits of Q276602 pci.vxd fix for ME outweigh the risks. Q276602 for WinME has a known problem listed in Microsoft KB article 810447: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810447 however, if WinME users do not use multiple flash storage devices, then the Q276602 patch might be safe to install. the last few weeks of Dec. 2005, I'm going to take a break for the holidays. I wont make any more posts after Dec. 20 until year 2006 begins. see ya after New Year's in 2006! correction: about the "Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE HP Omnibook Portable Computer Docking Error VIP.386" fix. Vip.386 file version for Win98 FE/SP1 is 4.10.2003, not 4.10.2002.
  5. alternate sites to view "Hacking Notepad" page (just in case the Geocities site doesnt work): http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/hack/notepad.htm http://thestarman.pcministry.com/hack/notepad.htm
  6. Nope, it doesn't show up in the Windows Task List window. and it never does show up in the Close Program dialog box when pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del]. you will need a utility like EndItAll (mentioned by the author of U891711) to safely shut down KB891711.exe (by selecting the Close option in EndItAll, not the Kill option) using Coolkill, WinKill or Process Explorer to "kill" KB891711.exe will result in a BSOD.
  7. probably not. you can safely delete the psapi.dll file from the windows\system folder as I dont have it on my ME machine. if you are using a program that depends on the psapi.dll file, better to place it in the program's folder than in the windows\system folder.
  8. the w98 machine I used was a pentium one [100 mhz] w/ 64 megs of ram and the ME machine was a pentium 3 [766mhz] w/ 256 megs of ram this was assuming I did NOT have any antivirus software installed or loaded at startup. firewall & antivirus utilities gobble up more resources than U891711
  9. never mind. I'm not going to download MESP alpha 2 as eidenk said the pack crashed like the alpha 1 version. and the link to get alpha 2 of the me pack is no longer working. the_guy should check very carefully the stuff written in ALL the .INF files included in the ME sevice pack. there could be a problem or problems found in the .INF files and he should make the necessary corrections to any of the .inf files. that could also be the reason why the ME pack keeps on crashing. and I should also suggest to the_guy to post the next release of the me pack to at least two sites, instead of one. if he also needs more ME fixes, get them from Petr as I recently sent most of the ones I have to him.
  10. About the OPKFIX.CAT file from Q271434. Remove it from the ME pack. that file requires ME's sytem file protection feature to be enabled in order for it to be registered and to have any effect. having that file installed [and SFP disabled] will not have any effect on ME [and will be worthless] unless SFP is on. plus most OEMs might have already have it pre-installed on many OEM versions of Windows ME (like with my HP Pavilion computer I got back in early 2001 with pre-installed Winme). I'll try out alpha 2 as soon as I can. next alpha release should exclude the opkfix.cat file.
  11. actually, eidenk, I didnt check very well about the ole files. I had to double-check which versions of the OLE files i had installed. at that time MDGx posted a OLE update 4522 for ME because I feared that OLE update 4526 might break some third party apps (which I think I didn't mention earlier). and I wasnt sure if Help and support center [NOT PC health] would work correctly with build 4526. after further testing and have installed OLE update 4526 on my ME computer, help & support works fine. still have yet to determine if it will or will not cause problems with the third party software I have on my machine. I've sent Petr most of the ME fixes I've obtained for the past several months. at this point I have the ME Q276602 patch but I'm not going to send it because of a known problem. if you need the rest of the ME patches, ask Petr for them.
  12. um, this might not be the right place to make your post, LLXX. look for the main topic about 48-bit LBA support in this forum, then make your post there instead of here. back to the original topic on obtaining MS hotfixes. one can try requesting a hotfix for multiple versions of Windows by using the subject Request for Qnnnnnn hotfix for <specify Windows versions here> [ex. subject: Request for Q237493 hotfix for Windows 95 and Windows 98] MS lists Q237493 fixes for both Win95 & 98 in MS article 237493
  13. My new unzipping tool changes timestamps! OK, I'll fix them soon. swgreed, Petr, any news about DSOUND.DLL problem? the updated dsound.dll file requires DirectX 7. since win98se originally included DirectX 6.1a, the 98se pack should NOT install that file unless DX7 [not DX 6.1 & earlier and not even DX 8 & higher] is installed. they're might be a problem when using certain computer games that depend on the dsound.dll file. havent seen any reports of any problems, yet.
  14. new link to get FESP v2.01 alpha (NO longer available): [the Winpack.org url was working at the time I posted it and is no longer working anymore...sorry]. I've been told by Petr that 98fe SP will now be managed by Gape. so it will be Gape that will be releasing beta & RC releases of FESP.
  15. U891711 is better than both MS's KB891711 and TI891711 fixes as U891711 has more thorough protection than the two patches.
  16. true that TI891711 doesnt load a startup but TI891711 has weaker protection than U891711. Quote from author of U891711: ---- "Tihiy's TI891711 is a nice piece of work, but, unfortunately, is no real replacement since it offers only limited protection. 16-bit programs including USER.EXE (!) can load animated cursor files, etc, and they bypass TI891711.DLL completely, that is, there is zero protection." ---- The U891711 patch only slowed down my Win98 & ME computers slightly. So I didnt noticed much of a performance drop with U891711.
  17. good thing I had tested the ME service pack on two ME machines (one slow and one fast). alpha 1 of the ME pack is a DUD! after I clicked on OK to install the Main hotfixes from the ME pack, the pack crashed with a RUNDLL32 error message. and many of the updated files did NOT install. what a bummer! It kept on crashing each time it tried to install the fixes, even when ME's SFP feature was disabled completely [on BOTH computers]. I noticed the ME pack was created with version 5.0.2920.0000 of the Wextract. Try creating the ME pack with version 6.0.2800.1106 of Wextract instead. The 98FE and 98SE packs were created from version 6.00.2800.1106 of Wextract.
  18. Abiword is more of a Microsoft Word replacement - not notepad. Abiword might be a good replacement for Wordpad or MS Word when working frequently with .DOC [Word Document] files. if Abiword can open Word documents created from Word 97/2000/2002/2003 then it can be a great alternative to using MS Word or Wordpad. the WinXP version of Wordpad can properly open Word 97/2000 documents. I also see no problem in patching Notepad. but change the version build number to reflect the minor changes made to Notepad [ex. Win98 has Notepad.exe 4.10.1998 w/out any changes/modifications to it]. after making a few changes or improvements to Notepad, change the version number of Notepad from build 1998 to 1999 > 4.10.1999.
  19. whoops. spoke too soon! I take it back. wiSHmaKeR's Notepad patch does NOT work under win98 1st edition as I have tested it on a 98fe computer. it only worked under 98se and not 98fe. pathetic!! I'd better ask MDGx to make an unofficial Win98 Notepad.exe v4.10.1999 patch.
  20. Noted, will add a warning. Please do send me Q278368, I don't have it. Many thanks in advance. sure MDGx. Also you can remove the OLE update 4522 for ME. I tested the OLE update 4526 on my ME system [with oleaut32.dll file build 4522, others build 4526] and it worked ok. so OLE update 4526 should work for ME as well.
  21. I like to reiterate that the Hibernation power management option is only available to laptop users (like me and my brother) who have installed Win98se and should not concern users who dont own a laptop. and dont even look for Gape's 98se SP to add the hibernation feature. again, suspend/standby is good enough for non-laptop Win98se users.
  22. what version of the Nero program [not the Nero aspi driver] are you using, Petr. I believe the latest releases for Nero 6.6 and Nero 7 contain the latest nero aspi drivers. I have Nero v6.3.1.25 installed on my WinME computer and it bundled v2.0.1.68 of the wnaspi32.dll file. speaking of Nero, un-install IAA [intel Application Accelerator] if using Nero 6 or later. IAA conflicts with Nero which caused those "unspecified target drive" errors when I tried to burn a CD or reformat a cd-rw disc. Nero 5.5 didn't have that problem with IAA installed.
  23. Why would you do this ? Everyone says (me included) that 4.60 performs better. uh yeah, everyone except me. The Adaptec ASPI v4.71 drivers worked fine on my WinME system. I even installed them on my brother's XP laptop machine and they worked fine. and the v4.71 drivers are more compatible with ME/XP/2k3 systems than the v4.60 drivers. go for it, the_guy. other inclusions for the WinME pack I like to see: -unofficial winme krnl386.exe 4.90.3001 patch [fixes a bug that microsoft forgot to patch] -unofficial winme update.sys 4.90.3001 patch -Metapad 3.51 [new release] BTW - Win2000, XP & 2003 hotfixes also use .CAT files. some but not all Win98se hotfixes also contain .CAT files to digitally sign updated files.
  24. BTW, Microsoft uses often also "Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition" spelling, with one "n" only, especially in the MS Knowledgebase it is confusing. Petr the word "millennium" is commonly misspelled the first time, Petr. I looked at most of the MS KB articles and MS does spell it with two n's instead of one. I think they made the corrections.
  25. thanks. I found that out in the morning. Good thing I downloaded the 2.1a pack at Freeware Files.com site and then I checked back at the Majorgeeks.com site in the afternoon and they did post up the 2.1a pack there. Better late and never, I guess. Inclusions I like to see in the next release of the 98se pack: -unofficial win98 Krnl386.exe 4.10.1999 patch [fixes a bug in that file that microsoft forgot to patch] -unofficial win98 voltrack.vxd 4.10.1999 patch [fixes a bug in that file that microsoft could not fix] -unofficial win98se update.sys 4.10.2223 patch -Metapad version 3.51 (now latest version)
