  1. Most WIFI cards work best with a Pentium 3 with at least 64 megabytes of memory. I wouldnt want to use WIFI cards on a slow computer less than a Pentium 233mhz cpu because it's so cumbersome. and I've heard certain wifi cards run smoother under WinXP than in Win98se. putting a WIFI card on a P133mhz cpu w/ 48mb RAM laptop is lame and the slow processor and relatively small memory compromises the speed benefits of WIFI cards. so using it on a very old and slow machine is not a good idea.
  2. Yup. the revised OLEUP.EXE worked under WinME and SFP did not restore the older files. You might also want to rework the HHUPD.EXE [unofficial HTML Help 5.20.3790.2453] patch and include the stuff from OLEUP's INF file so that HHUPD.EXE will work properly under ME and SFP will not have the chance to restore older HH files.
  3. your welcome Carrollsue. Norton antivirus [NAV] is a major resource grabber. more than what the latest version of McAfee VirusScan does. as for using older versions of NAV older than 2000, I dont recommend it as they are not compatible with the latest virus definition updates and scan engine updates. better off using Avast or even F-prot antivirus software. F-Prot is not free but it also does not use up much resources like what Avast does.
  4. unless Win98se has built-in drivers for the usb printer, you must run the setup program that comes with the usb printer software that installs the usb printer drivers and follow the directions very carefully on how to properly connect your usb printer to the win98se computer. almawardi has not responded at all to see if he resolved his problem. I'll assume he already did.
  5. three weeks and counting and still no response. has wiSHmaKeR disappeared off the face of the earth? heh, it's a figure of speech.
  6. I did install Nero Infotool 3.07 on my friend's XP SP2 Professional computer and ran it. After I clicked on the Save icon, it crashed with an error message "An error has occured in this application..." He has Nero 6.3 installed. I will help him update the Nero software to v6.6 first and run Nero Infotool 3.07 again to see if the problem goes away. this is a little off topic but Nero CD-DVD Speed app [cdspeed.exe] v4.11 uses gdiplus.dll file. A copy of the gdiplus.dll file is stored in the 'Program Files\Ahead\Nero Toolkit' folder after installing Nero 6.6. I think the latest Nero InfoTool app is bundled in the latest release of Nero 7.
  7. The AMD 750 chipset hardware isnt the problem, 303. It's the AMD Ultra ATA/EIDE drivers. they seem to NOT get along with the Nero 6.x burning rom software. The built-in MS IDE drivers from XP worked well with Nero 6.6 on my brother's XP computer. You could also try upgrading to Nero 7 but upgrading from Nero 6.x to Nero 7.x is NOT free. You must buy a license to use Nero 7. Lucky me, I found a product box containing the Nero 7 software at a local computer electronics store. Perhaps Nero 7 will work OK with the AMD IDE drivers.
  8. eidenk, I like to get your opinion on what Eck said about SFP in ME a few weeks ago. here's the quote: can you respond to this?
  9. I know for a fact that versions 2.0 & higher of the unofficial 98se service pack has v4.10.2224 of the hsflop.pdr file. And versions 1.5 and 1.62 of the pack had v4.10.2223 of that file. Look for the Windows 98 KB891711 Update in Add/Remove programs box. If it is there double-click to remove it and restart the computer. If it's not there run the MSConfig.exe tool from the Run dialog box to open the System Configuration Utility, click on the Startup Tab, look for the KB891711.EXE entry, uncheck the box next to that entry, click OK and reboot. then delete the KB891711.exe and Q891711.dll files from the \Windows\system\kb891711\ folder. About the Hsflop.pdr driver on your Win98se computer; delete it first or restore the original from your Win98se setup CAB files, then apply the Q262232 hsflop.pdr 4.10.2224 patch.
  10. Yeah, it's ridiculous for Rapidshare to charge users to have to resume downloads from their site especially for people who use dial-up internet connections. Note to all downloading the 98se service pack now: AVOID downloading the pack from the Mytempdir.com site. The 98se SP has been removed from that site giving the "The file was removed. Reason: Hosting period expired." error message. Gape might want to remove the link to the Mytempdir.com site off his 98 SE Service Pack page.
  11. yes but you will have to wait until Gape releases it. exact date is unknown; we cant predict when a new version of the 98se service pack will be ready.
  12. just wondering, is the FP4AWEC.DLL file included in the ME service pack? The Q282132 security patch for WinME has 4.0.2.4715 of that file and is installed in the 'Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\40\bin' folder. Fp4awec.dll file is also included in the Web Folders KB892211 update. Those who have MS Frontpage 2000 installed can install the FP2000 version of the Q282132 patch instead of the Windows ME version or they can install the KB892211 update. I've found a FP2k hotfix mentioning a newer version of the Fp4awec.dll file which has version 4.0.2.9010. I will request this Frontpage 2000 hotfix from MS that has the newer build of the fp4awec.dll file. If ever the ME service pack reaches RC [release candidate], that should be posted at least TWO sites, maybe Softpedia and Majorgeeks. you could try uploading the ME SP beta at Mytempdir.com and Freeware Files.com as RapidUpload cant allow resuming partially downloaded files.
  13. PACLF, can you tell us what kind of computer are you using? Run the Win98 System Information tool [msinfo32.exe] to gather details about your PC such as type & speed of CPU, amount of RAM installed, how big your hard drive is and what kind of BIOS your PC uses. The blue screen of death [bSOD] error might be a problem with older versions of KB891711.exe and Q891711.dll files. these files were first included in version 2.0 of the SP and are part of the Win98 KB891711 security update and the unofficial U891711 patch. Try un-installing the KB891711 or U891711 patch to see if the BSOD problem goes away. can you also tell us which versions of the 98se service pack fixed your floppy drive problem. I think you had a bad or corrupted hsflop.pdr driver and needed to replace it with either a clean one or an updated one.
  14. And I highly recommend downloading the 98se SP from Softpedia as well. Majorgeeks and Softpedia allow resuming partially downloaded file transfers w/ download managers & no restrictions. NEVER get any large size files from Rapidshare unless you have a broadband internet connection like cable, DSL or LAN. let's tell mamas6667 to NEVER, EVER EVER download the latest version of the 98se service pack from Rapidshare,,,NEVER AGAIN. download only from Majorgeeks and Softpedia sites when using a dial-up connection. appp is right. ivman is wrong! sure, RJARRRPCGP, the Wintop powertoy is listed on a Win95 page but Wintop works on all Win9xME systems. I ran Wintop under Win98, 98se & ME and it worked just fine on those 9x versions of Windows. I'm serious!
  15. This might be a little off topic but on MDGx's NT4 Essentials page lists the unofficial GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 security fix for NT4. I now recommend this unofficial NT912919 patch be removed off MDGx's web site. The NT4 KB891711 patch has GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.7270 while NT4 KB835732 has 4.0.1381.7263 of GDI32.DLL. So the unofficial NT912919 patch has a seemingly OLDER version of the gdi32.dll file.
  16. PACLF here are some search phrases to look for when finding older releases of the 98se SP: {type the following in the Yahoo search page} sesp162en.exe (this one is version 1.62 of 98se SP; few sites actually have this but this version causes problems when trying to access the Windows Update site) sesp202en.exe (this one is version 2.02; again few sites still have it) you can also try searching for "sesp20en.exe" or "sesp201en.exe" Dont be surprised if the links to older releases of the 98se SP do not work anymore. most of the "mirror" sites have pulled the older builds off their sites. that is why I will NOT bookmark directly to the sites that have the older builds because they may have worked a long time ago but have now stop working. only a few of them might still work but many of them will give you a 404 not found message.
  17. ok. just to let you know there is nothing wrong with the video drivers you are using. it's just that the user.exe and user32.dll files from ME are "designed" that way not to display a shutdown screen. bottom line, it's no big deal.
  18. I used to have problems with STIMON under ME but not anymore. un-installed my HP scanner software, deleted the HP scanner registry entries that were left over and re-installed the software. have not had a problem since then. Microsoft has noted a problem with STIMON causing an invalid page fault in support KB article 306393: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306393/
  19. thanks. MDGx has posted a revised U891711 patch that has v4.10.2225 of KB891711.exe file with a date of 2/11/2006 instead of 10/4/2005, the same date as v4.10.2224 of KB891711.exe. Are the MS active accessibility 2.0 files included in ME SP?
  20. it's because of the user.exe and user32.dll files from WinME. If you use these files under Win98/98se, you wont have a "shutdown" screen when you shut down your computer and will have a black screen w/ a blinking cursor. It's like that in WinME (and installing 98SE2ME under Win98se); in MS's words, it is "by design." if you put back the user.exe and user32.dll files from Win98se (or from the latest 98se USER hotfix such as Q291362), I bet you will have the normal Win98se shutdown screen back.
  21. Seeing he is posting in the 'Unoffical Win98 SE Service Pack' Section what do you think? you're such a jerk, codejunkie PACLF, if you're looking for previous releases of the 98se SP, try searching for them at Google or Yahoo. As far as I'm concerned there's no need to use older builds of the 98se service pack as the latest release fixes problems found in previous releases. so it's best to use the latest version of the 98se service pack.
  22. Gape, can you hold off in releasing the next release of the 98se SP? See my topic about "CacheWriteDelay" registry value: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67785 I mentioned there that the REG files delay2.reg, delay4.reg, delay8.reg and nodelay.reg should be added into the next release of the 98se service pack. The Q273017 update for Win98 SE installs those four REG files into the 'WINDOWS\INF\QFE\273017' folder. Installing the Win98se service pack creates the "CacheWriteDelay" registry value and sets it to 2000, which may not be for all Win98se users out there. Some Win98se users will need to change this value after installing the Win98se SP to something more appropriate for the size of the HD. Those using small HDs should set "CacheWriteDelay" to 0. Those using very large HDs [137Gb or higher] should set it to 4000 or 8000. The newer U891711 fix for Win98/ME now has KB891711.exe version 4.10.2225 but is dated 10/4/2005, the SAME EXACT date as version 4.10.2224 of the KB891711.exe file from the previous release of U891711. Looks like the author of U891711 forgot to change the date of the newer build of KB891711.exe. I had to make the change so that version 4.10.2225 of the KB891711.exe file is dated 2/11/2006 instead of the older date from the previous build. that guy needs to do a better job dating and versioning files so that Win98/ME users can easily distinguish between newer and older builds of files.
  23. Yes it is entirely removed. I have used Beta10 Oppcom for Windows ME. http://www.beta10.com/oppcomme.htm Protected files are listed in Filelist.xml I think.http://www.snapfiles.com/get/xmlnotepad.html SEE, Eck! eidenk doesnt have SFP on his ME computer. Npdsplay.dll is NOT protected by ME's SFP feature. If it aint listed in the "sfpdb.sfp" file (this file is stored in the 'WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SFP' folder) then it is not protected and thus can be overwritten. BTW - Filelist.xml is placed in the 'WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE' folder. ME hotfix Q297958 has latest filelist.xml file available. and no, the npdsplay.dll file is not listed in the filelist.xml file either. See my topic about the "CacheWriteDelay" registry value: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67785 I recommend adding the REG files delay2.reg, delay4.reg, delay8.reg and nodelay.reg file into the next beta release of the ME service pack. The Q273017 updates for 98se/ME install these 4 REG files into the 'WINDOWS\INF\QFE\273017' folder. Because installing the ME service pack creates the "CacheWriteDelay" registry value and sets it to 2000, this setting may not be suitable for all ME users. Some ME users will have to use the REG files to change the "CacheWriteDelay" value to 8000, 4000 or even 0 after installing the ME service pack.
  24. still, I highly recommend that these four REG files be included in the 98se and ME service packs. those using HDs from last decade (those 8Gb drives and smaller) should set "CacheWriteDelay" to 0.
  25. ok. I've done enough complaining about version 4.10.2225 of the KB891711.exe file having the same exact date as version 4.10.2224 of the KB891711.exe file [both builds 2224 and 2225 of KB891711.exe file were dated 10/4/2005 which is an abomination]. I've changed the date of build 2225 of the KB891711.exe file so it should now be dated 2/11/2006 with 10:25pm as the time. I've sent the revised U891711 fix to MDGx (the KB891711.exe file should be dated 2/11/2006 instead of 10/4/2005) but has not posted it up yet. Seems that the author of the U891711 fix forgot to change the date of the KB891711.exe file after he changed the build number from 2224 to 2225. It's barely inexcusable for newer builds of the U891711 files to have the same exact date as older builds.
