  1. no problem PROBLEMCHYLD. save the CRYPT9X.EXE patch on your computer just in case you have the problem again, you can run CRYPT9X to fix the problem. oh stop acting like a baby, jroc! grow up. I dont have the problems with java chat even with the latest Sun Java software installed on my computer.
  2. maybe. or maybe not. we shall see. I havent seen or experience any of the memory modules I've used on my computers get any slower. perhaps is US (computer users) are getting faster and have a perception that memory modules are moving a little slower. we do live in a fast changing world today.
  3. I had a similar problem of Windows Update Error a few years ago even before the 98se service pack came out but I found a way to fix that. Go to the 'Windows\System' folder, delete the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll files (if they exist). Then open registry editor and search for any references to either the iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll files and delete the registry entries that point to any of those files. Then run MDGx's CRYPT9X.EXE patch to re-register some of the "crypto" files, then run ROOTSUPD.EXE to update the Root Certificates for IE, reboot and reload IE and visit the Windows Update site. Found an old forum thread that mentions the problem error [0x800C0008] with Windows Update and the solution to register three DLL files with REGSVR32 to make Windows Update work again: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=39697 Better to run MDGX's CRYPT9X.EXE patch which registers those DLL files automatically.
  4. well forget it, winxpi. the KB908531/MS06-015 security updates for Windows 98 & Millennium are NOT yet available for Windows Update and my guess is that Microsoft has NOT even created them yet. Check back at the Windows Update site in the middle of June or even on July 11 to see if they'll be ready by then. perhaps M$ did forget about the 9xME code!
  5. I agree with LLXX on this one. Since it was a CHM file you were using, PROBLEMCHYLD, it might be a faulty CHM help file with bad scripts. so it's microsoft's fault for making a bad CHM Help file.
  6. Nope. have you tested beta 3 of the unofficial Windows ME service pack, Hussain? we have yet to hear from the_guy as to when he'll post up an RC edition of the ME Service Pack. you can try contacting him by email or by sending him a PM and ask him if a release candidate will be available.
  7. I hate to disappoint you folks but the compatibility patches from KB917425 only update the MSHTML.DLL file, NOT the URLMON.DLL file. They no longer contain FLASH8A.OCX file anymore Petr. They NOW have FLASH8B.OCX file dated 3/31/2006.
  8. yeah good one, PROBLEMCHYLD! assuming MS doesnt release the KB908531 patches for win98/me in mid-june they might post it up on july 11. or maybe MS wont release KB908531 for 98/ME at all once they end support for 98/ME on July 11.
  9. so far, riched20.dll version 5.4 works okay under Win95.
  10. maybe, maybe not. replace video card? that may not be possible if the video feature is built-in the motherboard. why cant you replace the modem? replacing the video card is more expensive than replacing the modem, I guarantee that. also replacing the video card 99.99% of the time does NOTHING to resolve the modem problem with 98se service pack installed. that's barely a dumb solution. changing the modem with a newer and a different brand is the more logical, more economic and more intelligent solution since many internal modems cost less than buying new graphics cards.
  11. All 9x versions have a fake Write.exe that instead uses wordpad. The original can be taken from Win 3.10/3.11/WFW. Ditto for Card.cjl Ditto for the Microsoft Paint program. All 9xME versions have the pbrush.exe file that launches the mspaint.exe file which runs Microsoft Paint.
  12. Hey MDGX. I just installed Firefox 1.5 on a Win95 machine and it works! I even installed Firefox 1.0x on a Win95 computer and it also works. Too bad the uninstaller for Firefox 1.5.0.3 does not work at all whether I install FF 1.503 under Win95, 98 or ME. I have reported the "uninstaller" bug to Mozilla corp. and they should be able to fix the problem. I'll wait until a stable firefox 2.0 beta to come out, then I'll test it.
  13. NICE. Now if only you can make a similar URLMONFX package for Win2000 SP4 & XP SP1 systems so that it can overwrite the urlmon.dll file with the one in your URLMONFX package, that'll be great (maybe you can call it URLMON2K). the pack will need to install the urlmon.dll file into the \%windir%\system32\ and \%windir%\system32\dllcache\ folders.
  14. nope. you may want to send Gape an email or PM (personal message) of when he will release a newer 2.x beta of the 98se service pack.
  15. UPDATE: Tihiy's modified Regedit.exe file DOES work on ALL versions of Win95, 98 & ME. However, regedit will NOT display the Favorites keys you have bookmarked when used under Win95. That means Tihiy's regedit files work properly under Win98 and ME.
  16. Check out MDGx's site for BOTH official and unofficial 891711 updates for win98 & winme-
  17. SHLWAPI.DLL v6.00 from IE6 can work for both 9x and NT-based Windows OSes. some functions will be available for certain versions of Windows, others will not. BTW - Still testing v5.4 of RICHED20.DLL file under a Win95 machine. I'll post up the results in a few days.
  18. Well, how long "should" a computer be living? I don't like if someone tells me that my computer shouldn't live anymore, just because it's seven years old, and just because I don't see the point of having a throw away and replace mentality.Additionally, the problem is that this "should be living" is determined by all kinds of factors, some of them having to do with politics and money. (See for example the reason why Adobe 7 or MSN Messenger 7.5 won't run on Windows 98.) That being said, I don't think anyone is disputing some of the limitations of Win9x here. Agreed!well said ivanbuto. I had my cousin's old Compudyne Pentium one computer from a decade ago and it still runs good, even though I changed most of the parts (faster CPU, more RAM, faster video card, faster CD drive & bigger hard drive). I'm not gonna get rid of that ol' PC. Nice to hear that Firefox 2.0 will work on Win98/ME systems. But right after Mozilla Corp. releases a major version of Firefox, the older major version becomes obsolete and they retire support for it (when FF 1.5 was released, FF 1.0x is no longer supported).
  19. maybe, maybe not. replace video card? that may not be possible if the video feature is built-in the motherboard. why cant you replace the modem? replacing the video card is more expensive than replacing the modem, I guarantee that. try disabling one of the serial or COM ports in BIOS setup but un-install the modem drivers first then reboot. If internal modem is connected to COM1 or COM3, disable COM1 in BIOS setup. if internal modem is connected to COM2 or COM4 or higher, disable COM2 in BIOS setup. now reboot to win98se and let windows redetect the modem and it'll install the modem using the COM resources that were disabled in BIOS setup. That seem to work on one of my old 98SE computers, even with the 98se service pack installed. Also Fennco, check the actual internal modem itself. If the modem still does not work then it might have been damaged by a power spike RJARRRPCGP described in his post and should be replaced because the power spike can cause modems to malfunction.
  20. It is part of IE 6.0 SP1. Petr the newer hhctrlui.dll file should be included in the next release of 98se SP 2.x. the hhctrlui.dll is NOT included in the KB896358 updates. note that the KB811630 update for NT4 is no longer listed in MS KB article 811630. NT4 users can obtain the updated HTML Help module here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/c...d3623/HHUPD.EXE It's been almost 6 months since the 2.1a release of the 98se service pack.
  21. automatic updates make sense when using broadband connection like DSL, cable or T1 or higher LAN connection. AU seems lame to use with dialup. another reminder to foothills that there is NO release candidate for the ME service pack yet as he has asked about this three times already and asking about it again would be bothersome (kinda like the kid repeatedly asking the question "are we there yet?")
  22. yeah no duh I already mentioned about the Flash Player KB913433 update at the "98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes" topic. part of my quote from one of my recent posts at the 98fe/98se/ME updates topic: sorry, no KB908531 MS06-015 updates for Win98/ME posted at WU yet. check back in mid-June or even on July 11 to see if they're available.
  23. nah dont bother. it's now safe to use U891711 (instead of MS's KB891711) as it did not cause any problems on any of my Win98/ME machines.
  24. what kind of notebook computer is it?
  25. See my quote, emarkay, for the links to "official" KB891711 V2 updates for Win98/ME:
