137GB limit - ESDI_506.PDR and other limits
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
the WinME version of Fdisk.exe should also work as expected with very large HDs (when using the WinME boot disk). MS fixed the fdisk.exe problem right before they released ME. -
i do not recommened using tweakui's autologin feature as it makes your network very insecure and can allow unauthorized users to mess up your network. i guess a win98 hotfix completely disabled it.

It's a Windows Installer thing, Petr. AR 6.x uses MSI to install the Adobe Reader and it has MSI scripts that prevent the installation under 98fe, 95 & NT4 and will only install under 98se/me/2k/xp. thanks for the AR 6.05 update, rainyd. ok this is off topic, but any chance of making Apple Quicktime 7.x run under Win98/ME (or even the Apple ipod software under 98/me) with KernelXP. I know both of these require win2k/xp.
-
nope. you'll have to search for one at Google or Yahoo. we're not allowed to bookmark any sites in this forum that have the win98se download. sorry.
-
personally I'm currently using Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.x, (w/ 6.04 update installed) under WinME. AR 6.x only supports Win98se, Winme, 2000, xp/2003. the AR6 installer refuses to install under Win95, Win98 FE and NT4.

bad idea LLXX. removing a usb device while it is reading and/or writing isnt really recommended, especially if there are applications that are using the usb device. doing this while an app is accessing a usb device can crash the program, or maybe the windows system. I've had that happen a few times and had to reset the PC to get things back to normal. best to wait until the usb device is finished reading/writing, then shut down the program that uses the usb device and then disconnect the usb device.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
no, PROBLEMCHYLD. Automatic Updates NEVER works under Win98. The ACTUAL Windows Update site does NOT allow automatic updating under ALL 98 systems. Automatic Updates only work under Win2000 SP3/SP4, WinME, XP & 2003. It's up to microsoft to redo their windows update site to make automatic updates work for other versions of windows. about UPNP under Win98. copy the netsetup.exe file from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ folder onto a floppy disk. Put the FD into a Win98 machine and run the netsetup.exe file, which will install some UPNP files onto Win98. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I have read a blog at the MSRC site that the MS06-015 updates for win2k, xp & 2k3 will be re-issued on tuesday, April 25: http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/04/21/425838.aspx Those using win2000, xp or 2003 should download and install the revised MS06-015 updates when they become available at that date. it's unknown if the MS06-015 updates for win98 & me will be ready on april 25. -
currently it's in beta 3 stage, Hussain. beta 3 added the missing Q318307 vmouse.vxd hotfix and fixed several installation & un-installation problems. the next upcoming beta should fix the problem when the installer prompts for the hh.exe and cdfs.vxd files. I've figured out how to fix those. Maybe it is no problem in English version at all, maybe just minor. Petr I tested MetaPad v3.51 and using v5.3x of riched20.dll file on my WinME machine. worked ok. just be sure you have updated most of the font files on your computer.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Why? Petr because Mytempdir.com is better than Rapidshare and I can download files there without restrictions. the ME service pack is posted at Mytempdir.com. never mind. if getting 98 SP alpha is reliable at your Winpack.org site then we should leave it as is. I guess the VIA SP13000 mobo does not like Win98 FE and maybe it was not designed for 9xME and meant only for win2k/xp/2k3/vista versions of windows. -
that's all right Gape. take your time. I have not been feeling well in the last few days [had a cold and a little bit of a fever but I'm well enough to use the net]. I'm feeling better today. just wondering if unofficial updates like update.sys v4.10.1999, voltrack.vxd v4.10.1999, krnl386.exe v4.10.1999 will be included in the next release of your 98se service pack.

D_S, you will need to reset your network connections and re-enable file sharing service in the Network control panel app after installing the 98SE service pack on ALL of your Win98se computers. Also try removing both MS Client for Microsoft Networks and MS Client for Netware Networks from Network control panel, reboot and then re-install the Clients for both MS Networks and Netware Networks and reboot. and also, see MS article 272594 on using WinIpCfg to release DHCP info and to renew it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272594/

Registry error reported after install
erpdude8 replied to firelord77's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
you guys may also want to run Scanreg /fix in DOS outside win98se to fix some problems with the registry files. then run Scandisk in native DOS mode to fix file system errors on your HDs. and after you fix all the problems with the registry and hard drive, then run the 98se service pack installer to see if the registry problems are gone. -
maybe in the next few months. it's up in Gape's hands to release a new version but right now he's currently very busy.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
oh MDGx. Fred Langa of Langa.com site has written an article that mentions about your 98SE2ME pack. here's the link to that article: http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2006/2006-03-27.htm#3 -
the next release of the 98se service pack wont be ready until Gape says so. I havent seen a post from him for several weeks. looks like he's busy. perhaps by May or June or when he is done with his studies he may release a new version.

I agree with LLXX, newer versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader are resource hogs unless you disable some of the plugins Acrobat Reader loads. there is an Acrobat Reader 5.1. you can find a copy of AR 5.1 at the Oldversion.com site. AR 5.1 is no longer available for download at the Adobe site.

showhost, it's relatively safe to install the unofficial win98se service pack, even on a win98se machine with all the third party software and hardware drivers installed on a non-fresh 98se machine. but before you actually install the service pack, disable any antivirus programs running, do a Scandisk and Defrag on your computer to fix and optimize your hard drive. also the sp has some security fixes (like the latest msasn1.dll file from KB835732) that MS didnt bother to patch up for win98. MS is only fixing "critical" security issues for Win98 & ME systems and they wont fix security issues that are non-critical.

if Windows users encounter the "Security Alert" message described in this thread in other versions of Windows such as NT4, WinME, Win2000, XP or Win2003, open the MS-DOS Command Window, go to the Windows System folder (\Windows\System\ in Win95, 98 & ME; \WinNT\system32\ in WinNT4 & 2000; \Windows\system32\ in WinXP & 2003) and type in the following commands to re-register the Crypto files: "REGSVR32.EXE CRYPTUI.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE CRYPTDLG.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE MSCAT32.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE MSSIP32.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE RSAENH.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE SCHANNEL.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE SOFTPUB.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE WINTRUST.DLL" "REGSVR32.EXE XENROLL.DLL" one of my aunts told me she encountered the "Security Alert" pop-up message on her WinME computer when visiting a certain web site just like the one wreakhavoc mentioned. I just had to replace those files with clean versions and then re-register them with the REGSVR32 command.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
your very welcome, Milmoor. glad there are at least a few people who really want to test out the 98fe service pack on their Win98fe machines. Petr might also want to upload the 98fe service pack alpha at MyTempdir.com site. -
Maybe the reason is that none of these files is available in any Service Pack or update. This file only can be bought with Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Petr Incidentally, about RICHED32.DLL: the version included in the unofficial RICHED9X.EXE for 9x is 5.0.1461.82. The version that eidenk and Petr were talking about above is 5.0.2134.1, which was (at least) included with Windows 2000. However, there's another RICHED32.DLL included in MDGx's RICHEDNT.EXE (the same build number as the Win2k file, but with a later date: in Win2k it's 1999, while in RICHEDNT.EXE it's 2001). So, the fact that RICHED32.DLL build 5.0.2134.1 is included in RICHEDNT.EXE means that it is distributable, and can be used instead of the older 5.0.2134.1 in RICHED9x... right? I've tested it (98 SE) with no problems so far. I have a different opinion on using v5.0.2134.1 of riched32.dll file under 9xME systems. it has the potential of breaking some older programs and not functioning correctly under Win9xME. Versions 5.0.2134.1 and 5.0.1461.82 of the RICHED32.DLL file have VASTLY different file sizes. If either one of them is stored in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder and some of your programs do not work correctly because of the RICHED32.DLL file, copy that DLL file onto the program's folder to see if the problems go away. if not, try using a different version of RICHED32.DLL file and store that version in the program's folder and NOT the 'WINDOWS\SYSTEM' folder. AND I do NOT recommend using v5.4 and 5.5 of RICHED20.DLL file on a Windows machine without MS Office XP or 2003 installed [Office 97 & 2000 may not work well with riched20.dll v5.4 & higher]. stick with version 5.3.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
bad idea, bristols. using riched32.dll v5.00.2134.1 under W9x/ME systems may BREAK certain apps. plus file size of v5.00.2134.1 of riched32.dll file is 3,856 bytes. File size of riched32.dll v5.00.1461.82 is 203,024 bytes. Also LOOK at v5.00.2134.1 and v5.00.1461.82 of RICHED32.DLL's File "Properties" and look in the Version tab. Looking at Description on v5.0.2134.1 of RICHED32.DLL in the Version tab it says "Wrapper Dll for Richedit 1.0" while v5.0.1461.82 of RICHED32.DLL file has Description that says "Windows 95 Rich Text Edit Control". also looking at Product Name of v5.0.1461.82 of RICHED32.DLL file it says "Microsoft Exchange" while looking at Product Name of v5.0.2134.1 of RICHED32.DLL file it says "Microsoft® Windows ® 2000 Operating System". so v5.0.2134.1 of Riched32.dll may be incompatible with 9XME systems and meant only for NT-based systems. If a program depends on either the older or newer version of Riched32.dll file, better to store that specific version of the Riched32.dll file into the program's folder instead of in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder to avoid problems. -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
maybe. minor correction to my last post. KB888113/MS05-015 was posted on February 2005 (not Jan. 2005) and the KB888113 security updates for windows 98 & ME were posted at Windows Update in March 2005. Microsoft KB article 918165 has been posted to note the problems found in the KB908531 security updates for win2000, xp & server 2003: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 note that MDGx told me last week Microsoft extended support for Windows 98 & ME until July 11, 2006 instead of June 30, 2006. here's the microsoft support site that says this: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean18/ -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
also Milmoor, how big is your actual email account? there are some email accounts out there that are past the 100Mb+ limit like Hotmail (Hotmail email accounts for free are 250Mb in size, paid Hotmail accounts are 1 Gb in size) and Yahoo Mail (Yahoo Mail accounts are up to 1 Gb in size). Nah, it's better if the pack were NOT sent to your email address because your account may limit the size of the attachments you can receive. if they are past the limit, they might get rejected. plus there are some email accounts out there (like Hotmail or even GMail) that reject EXE files. Yahoo Mail I believe can only accept and transmit attachments no greater than 10 Mb [Yahoo Mail Plus accounts can handle up to 20 Mb in attachments]. I may have to ask Petr if he can upload a copy of alpha 2 of the 98fe service pack again on his web site. it's better that way so you can download it from there since his server is more reliable than the Rapidshare site. the 98 sp is just way too big to send by email and it may take too long to upload & download when using a slow dialup connection. HuckFinn said he showed interest in adding some stuff into the 98 service pack. I hope he actually means it. the 98 sp project is not completely abandoned yet. let's see if Huckfinn can keep his promise.
