  1. This maybe a little off topic, but when I installed the KB916281 under my WinXP SP2 machine and went to the V6 Windows Update site, it STILL offers KB916281. doesnt WU know that I already installed the KB916281 patch for XP? what gives!
  2. bigbadsteve, the Notepad patch wiSHmaKeR made is supposed to make files 64Kb or bigger open in Metapad, NOT Wordpad. If Metapad.exe is not installed in the \WINDOWS\ folder, then you will have that error message. I have the "fixed" Notepad.exe file version 4.10.1999 that will automatically launch Wordpad when trying to open files > 64kb in Notepad. email me or send me a PM [personal message] if you need the modified Notepad.exe file for Win98.
  3. ok. so far Gape has done nothing with the 98fe SP. alright. I've posted up beta 1 of the 98fe SP2 today. I've decided to make only beta releases of the 98fe SP; that way the 98fe SP project wont seem dead. I will NOT make any final & release candidate editions of 98fe SP since I dont have enough time to for those and I want to enjoy my summer vacation. see latest page of the Service Pack for Windows 98 Standard topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...4732&st=135
  4. yea doesnt that suck, Fredledingue? DXN DivX codec doesnt even work under Win98/ME? dump it and find an alternative to that software that is 9x/NT5x compatible or that works under ALL 32bit editions of Windows.
  5. the long wait is over. Beta 1 of the service pack 2.01 for windows 98 first edition is now posted here: <link to it now removed> I will only make betas of this service pack. RC releases will not be made by me and will be done by someone else. next beta of the 98fe SP2 is scheduled to come out in middle of July. enjoy!
  6. The triedit.dll file does NOT get installed into the System folder on my WinME and my WinXP desktop machines as I've checked there. If you install Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x (or Win2000, ME, XP or 2k3) which bundles the the triedit.dll file, IE's setup installer puts it in the \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TRIEDIT\ folder which is where it belongs. and besides, IE uses the triedit.dll file from that location.
  7. Which files are you speaking about ? Do you mean triedit.dll 6.1.0.9227 and mfc42.dll 6.2.4131.0 ? If so, I don't know where I got them from. I regularly install a lot of software and it probably came with one of them. I collect any MS files from those installers whatever the version even if I know I have got a file of such or such version number already as I found out that there are quite a few of those files that are not binary identical. For mfc42.dll - 6.2.4131.0, I have two different files for example : mfc42.dll - 6.2.4131.0 - 1,028,096 bytes - 04 August 2004, 01:57:24 - 6a420038c8f8fde9048a569d1663b908 mfc42.dll - 6.2.4131.0 - 1,028,096 bytes - 09 November 2005, 09:21:22 - 4602907535fd682195dfff9117365826 Differences are quite big as a binary compare finds 29.000 differences or so but I had both running without apparent problem. Certainly the one you install is safer as I know only of one binary of build 6.0.9782.0. As for triedit.dll, as dhtml.ocx is updated, I thought it could be a good idea if triedit.dll was updated as well. I know two versions more recent than the one in IE6SP1, 6.1.0.9211 and 6.1.0.9227 (currently installed on my system). But I don't exactly know where they do come from. There is also a msvcp60.dll more recent than the one in your pack. It is version 6.2.3104.0. I have 4 different binaries of it. For version 6.0.8972.0 (the one you install), I have six different binaries. It is a bit beyond topic but I'd appreciate anyone who's got as little a clue as to what this mess is about with different binaries for the same version number. Also I am currently looking into your previous pack and it seems it seems it is already beta 4 : mesp202en-b4.exe (91e2d0a6943632c574f68f473545844b). So please make your next one to be beta 5 and not beta 4 again. If you want any of the above files, if only to look at them or test them, just PM me with an email and I'll send them to you. TRIEDIT.DLL file gets installed in the \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\TRIEDIT\ folder. AVOID using MFC42.DLL file version 6.2.4131. It may be a UNICODE version, which means it's meant ONLY for Win2k/XP/2k3 systems and NOT for Win9x/ME. sitck with using ver. 6.0.8972 of MFC42.DLL file which is an ANSI version that is compatible with Win9xME. Adobe/Macromedia Shockwave version 10.1c requires Win98/2k/ME/XP. Will NOT install nor run under Win95/NT4. Win95 & NT4 users should get Shockwave 8.5 instead.
  8. Foxit Reader works better with the GDIPLUS.DLL file under Win9x/ME/NT4 but you must install the gdiplus.dll file into the SAME folder as where the Foxit Reader software is installed.
  9. WMP9 works fine under Win98 SE without making ANY registry changes. I installed WMP9 under a clean install of Win98se and it worked great. For Win98 FE, you'll have to do some work in order to make WMP9 run under Win98 FE. here's my quote from the WMP10 in Windows 98 thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...53286&st=30 Media Player 9's setup_wm.exe file uses the information from the control.xml file to install WMP9. I figured if you change the Win98 OS version from 4.10.2222 to 4.10.1998 in the control.xml file, the WMP9 setup installer will install the Media Player 9 files under Win98 version 4.10.1998. thus, a "different" way to install WMP9 under Win98 FE with making NO changes to Windows registry.
  10. CRYPTME has 128SC.DLL file! Remove it and any references to 128SC.DLL as it is NOT needed and outdated for WinME. Revise the CRYPTME.EXE patch. WinME has built-in 128bit SSL encryption for IE.
  11. dont add the files from CRYPTME. some ME files are original versions. however, be sure to REGSVR32 the CRYPTUI.DLL, CRYPTDLG.DLL, MSCAT32.DLL, MSSIP32.DLL, RSAENH.DLL, SCHANNEL.DLL, SOFTPUB.DLL & WINTRUST.DLL files. Include lines to register these DLL files in the SPUPDATE.INF file to fix the IE Crypto problem.
  12. alright, I've decided to take matters into my own hands. I have made a beta of the 98fe SP; fixed several installation and removal problems with the pack. Few files have been removed as they have caused install problems. Several files (such as GDI.EXE & GDI32.DLL) have been updated. No new files were added. Just need to test it on a Win98fe PC for a few days. so beta 1 of the 98fe SP2 should be available at the end of June or the start of July.
  13. pjmelect, UNINSTALL KB912812 and install KB916281 and test out the Windows Update site with IE6 SP1. The KB916281 patch fixes the “administrators only” problem caused by KB912812. GOSH DARN IT, Big Monstro and nicke85, CANT YOU GUYS JUST FREAKIN' WAIT? Gape is very busy right now.
  14. Not so fast, galahs!!! I GOT WMP9 to work under Win98 FE! I made a post about it in another thread. Let me know if you want to know how to install WMP9 under Win98fe.
  15. I believe 98se is identified as WinME v4.90.3001 A because of some WinME files installed from the 98SE2ME pack (such as kernel32.dll and sysdm.cpl). Beta 3 of ME SP has been removed due to "expired hosting period". Looks like nobody downloaded it for a while and they decided to pull it off the site. Is beta 4 almost ready, the_guy?
  16. thanks Petr & the_guy. BTW - the_guy, the link to ME Service Pack 2 beta 3 is now dead. Are you almost ready to post up beta 4 of ME SP?
  17. sorry eGo®Z. that link is now a dead one. from http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/in...fb2d300.xml.asp : "INF Size Limits A Windows 9x/Me INF file cannot be larger than 64 kilobytes. There is no practical limit to the size of an INF file for NT-based systems. Unless otherwise restricted in this documentation, the maximum length of any INF file field is 512 characters (including a terminating NULL character). Note, however, that Plug and Play may impose a more restrictive limit for certain INF file fields that it recognizes or uses, such as device description, driver provider, and device manufacturer." HTH Andreas The MSDN link is now dead. New MSDN link to Creating INF files: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default....fb2d300.xml.asp BTW - how do the slayout.inf, slayout1.inf, slayout2.inf files from the 98se SP work? how are they created? I like to learn because I may be willing to update the 98FE SP2 pack just this one time. I may post up a beta of the 98fe SP2 since nobody seems to be doing anything about it right now.
  18. anyone care to make an unofficial U908531 fix for Win98/ME?
  19. Gape, please include RICHED20.DLL version 5.4 in the next version of the 98SE Service Pack 2.x. It's stable enough to be used on all 9x versions of Windows.
  20. You can also change the folder attributes within the File Manager [winfile.exe] applet. Just be sure to set File Manager to view Hidden & System files/folders. Attribute Changer does work on all 9x and NT-based versions of Windows. it's too bad the author did not list the full Windows requirements for that program on his web site. I'll make that suggestion to post that up on his site.
  21. XP_2600, what version of Windows is installed on the Toshiba Portege 3480CT laptop computer? The sound card drivers might be bad or not installed correctly. Go to the following Toshiba support site: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su...kceghdgngdgnj.0 and look for the Sound Drivers for the Portege 3480CT notebook PC. Then download and install the correct sound card drivers. see if this helps your problem. -EP
  22. Another reason why I disagree with Chozo4 keeping IE 5.00; some Win98 patches do NOT work unless IE 5.5 or better is installed such has KB888113 and the newly release KB918547. Some Win98 patches DO check the version of IE installed. Run the KB888113 or the KB918547 update under Win98+IE5.0 and the patches will say "This update is not designed for your version of Internet Explorer. Press OK to Exit". Only Win98+IE5.5 or Win98+IE6 configs those patches should work as expected.
  23. Apparently the KB918547 updates DO care what version of IE is installed. I've tested the KB918547 updates under Win98/ME. They will NOT work unless IE 5.5 SP2 or higher is installed. Looked at the contents of the KB918547 Win98/ME updates in Wordpad and they check the version of SHDOCVW.DLL file installed. It has to be version 5.50.4807.2300 or better. Otherwise the KB918547 patches refuse to install the files.
  24. it might be the arm mechanism that moves the cd lens and some other internal parts of the UJ-811 drive that might be slightly off alignment (perhaps off by a few millimeters); I have that kind of problem. I may have to dis-assemble the drive and clean the internal parts with a paper towel [or even with sandpaper] and attempt to move the parts back into correct alignment. That might not be the prettiest solution and it is NOT a cure-all but it can work for some people. I DO agree that Mash-ta drives are PIECES OF CRAP, especially when they do NOT even provide "generic" firmware upgrades for the UJ-811 and some other Mash-ta drives. I may consider getting the NEC CD-2100A drive for the laptop if the UJ-811 drive stops working altogether.
  25. Here's the site for Notepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm may be better than the patched Notepad.
