  1. And another reason why I want you to post your responses in this forum is so that other people besides me can also help you. try un-installing the Win98 SE service pack to see if the problem goes away. you can remove the 98se SP from Add/Remove programs, then reboot afterwards. could it be that your Sony CD drives have dirty CD lens when trying to read a CD? test them out with different types of CDs [aka. Audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-ROMs, and CD-RWs] buy a CD cleaner [at a computer electronic store] to clean the lens if your Sony CD drives cannot read ANY type of disc. It could be more of a hardware problem instead of a driver problem.
  2. oh grow up, randiroo76073! The Microsoft .NET Framework also includes GDI+ DLL file. Latest .NET Framework download is version 2.0. All versions of .NET Framework have the GDI+ file.
  3. And I also suggest MDGx that he post up the unofficial NT888113 hlink.dll patch. I send this to him a few weeks ago but he has not post it up. What is the bleepin' hold-up? Get it in gear, MDGx! Remove unofficial NT912919 GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 patch and post up unofficial NT888113 hlink.dll 5.20.3790.227 patch.
  4. and if this does not work, re-install Win98 SE from scratch as you might have bad or corrupted registry entries that prevent using TweakUI.
  5. Also, online banking web sites require 128-bit SSL encryption which should be provided in IE 6. try installing MDGx's CRYPT9X package to re-register some of the crypt32 files here: http://www.mdgx.com/files/CRYPT9X.EXE I may suspect bad or corrupted cryp32.dll and softpub.dll files. Install CRYPT9X package, then try the site again. if it works, great. if not, try repairing IE from Add/Remove programs select Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, then select the option Repair Internet Explorer and reboot.
  6. is your Sony CD drives connected to a SCSI card or connected to IDE cables in your computer? Please POST your response here in this forum. Do NOT send any more "personal IMs" to me as I may discard them.
  7. my personal favorite antivirus app is now PC-Cillin Internet Security suite from Trend Micro. it's not only an antivirus program but it's also an anti-spam, anti-spyware & firewall program. all bundled in one app. sweet!
  8. wonderful. in beta 4 or release candidate 1 we should add the un-install confirmation dialog box to the ME service pack. i've figured out how to do it.
  9. If there was going to be a new alpha release of the 98fe SP, it should be posted at the MyTempdir.com site instead of the Rapidshare.de site. the latest beta of WinME SP I'm testing is posted at MyTempdir.com which does allow resuming interrupted downloads with no restrictions.
  10. See Device Manager again to see the model number of the Sony CD drives. check with the Sony web site if they have updated firmware/bios for the cd drives. And what exactly happens when you use the Sony CD drives after installing win98se SP? do they cause blue screen errors or do they act differently? I installed the Win98se service pack on an old P100 mhz PC with 64 megs of RAM and it's using a Lite-On CD drive and the CD drive works properly, even with DMA setting enabled.
  11. I now recommend MDGx that he should remove the unofficial NT912919 GDI32.DLL 4.0.1381.299 patch off his web site as the file contains a seemingly OLDER build of the GDI32.DLL file. The NT4 KB835732, KB840987 and KB891711 updates have much higher builds of gdi32.dll file than that and installing NT912919 may not work under an WinNT4 SP6 system with either KB835732, KB840987 or KB891711 update installed. BTW - KB835732 for NT4 has gdi32.dll v4.0.1381.7263 while KB840987 & KB891711 have gdi32.dll v4.0.1381.7270.
  12. Try downloading the newly revised Root Certificates Update here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe and run it to see if it goes away. If not, you may need to contact the webmaster of the web site that displayed the Security Alert message about certificates. as Petr said, show us precisely what kind of Security Alert you received.
  13. The unofficial Win98 FE service pack 2 is still stuck in alpha 2 stage [since early July 2005] and hardly anyone is ever testing it or even downloading it since it is posted at that #@$*%#)% Rapidshare.de site which I REALLY loathe (aka. HATE). Petr made a poor choice of posting it there since that site does not offer resuming downloads unless you pay them for a "premium" account. a premium account at Rapidshare allows resuming interrupted downloads. UTTERLY RIDICULOUS! DONT ask Petr about the Win98 FE service pack 2.x anymore. Like I said in an earlier post a few months ago, he is no longer managing the SP as he told me back then. Gape is concentrating more on the Win98 SE service pack instead of Win98 FE SP. Right now the Win98 FE service pack is placed on hold but not necessarily discontinued. And I am personally testing out the WinME Service pack which there will be a new beta of it coming out in a few days.
  14. what kind of computer are u using magnal60? specify how fast your CPU/processor, amount of RAM, and how big your hard drive is. have you tried updating the firmware/bios of your Sony CD drives? what kind of Sony CD drives are they? view these in Device Manager by opening the System control panel app and click on Device Manager tab and expand the CDROM section.
  15. OR better yet download the FULL IE 6.0 SP1 browser at one of these sites: http://tucows.iinet.com.au/pub/microsoft/i...sp1/ie60sp1.exe http://ftp.up.ac.za/pub/windows/microsoft/...sp1/ie60sp1.exe it's an 80 Meg download so if you are using a dialup connection, use a third party download manager to download and resume file transfers. once you get this massive download, extract all the files inside to a temp folder and run the ie6setup.exe file from that folder to install IE 6 SP1.
  16. your welcome CLASYS. The V4 Windows Update site started in early 2002 and only worked for Windows XP systems. then MS added support for Windows 2000 systems a few months later and near the end of year 2002, the V4 site started to work for Windows 98 & Millennium. I long to see all those unofficial Win98/98se updates (such as voltrack.vxd 4.10.1999, update.sys v4.10.2223, krnl386.exe v4.10.1999, ifsmgr.vxd 4.10.2227 < this one is listed at MDGx's web site and unofficial gdi.exe/gdi32.dll v4.10.2226 fix) included in the next release of the Windows 98 SE Service Pack. The ME service pack I am testing has some of the unofficial ME updates included (such as update.sys v4.90.3001, krnl386.exe v4.90.3001 and unofficial gdi.exe/gdi32.dll v4.90.3002 fix).
  17. also the Q318307 Vmouse.vxd file ver. 4.90.3003 should also be added onto the ME service pack. The Q318307 Vmouse.vxd hotfixes for Win98 & ME were packaged inside Microsoft's Intellipoint Mouse v4.12 software, which I have installed on my WinME computer.
  18. the CRYPT9X pack now contains v5.0.2013.1301 of advpack.dll file (GOOD!) which was included in the 128-bit High Encryption packs for older versions of IE. About the Rootsupd.exe file I mentioned earlier: the downside is that while running rootsupd.exe, it does not give users a clue of what it is doing (no dialog boxes and no confirmation boxes of whether or not the installation was successful or if it failed). it just does a "silent" installation.
  19. New version of Nero InfoTool posted is version 4.03 at the CdSpeed2000.com download page: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html also released is Nero CD-DVD Speed version 4.50. The new version of InfoTool (4.03) will NOT resolve the problem of not detecting any "OS patches" installed under Win9x/ME systems. Infotool may detect some patches installed under Win2k/XP/2k3/NT4 systems.
  20. doesnt seem to be a link for the "98 Service Pack 2.1b". does not exist. So far I have no problems installing the Win98se Service pack 2.1a. It is when I UN-install (or remove) the Win98se service pack that I have some doubts. Gape needs to make some changes to the SPUNINST.INF file of the 98se service pack. The current version of the SP (during un-install) will restore the DHTMLED.OCX file with the original one from the Win98se setup files which is a BAD idea for Win98se users who have installed IE 5.01 or better and IE uses that file. Any references to the DHTMLED.OCX file should be removed from the SPUNINST.INF file. that's just one of my main concerns when un-installing the win98se sp. my other concern is that it will restore the MSMOUSE.VXD file with the original version from the Win98se setup files. This may not be a good idea for Win98se users who have installed the Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse software which has it's own version of the MSMOUSE.VXD file. He may also want to remove references to that file from the SPUNINST.INF file.
  21. just be sure to backup your personal data files first onto any removable media (floppies, cd-rw discs, etc.) before you proceed in installing the Win98 SE service pack. same here as HighPingDrifter, installing the Win98se Service pack on this old win98se pc at my next-door neighbor's house (she lets me use her PC) and it worked great.
  22. Yup, you hit it right on the nose, PsycoUnc. I like to see IE 5.5 SP2 or IE 6.0 SP1 included in the 98se SP as install options. The IE 5 version Chozo4 is keeping is SO FLAWED that I have experienced bugs/crashes with it on a Win98 SE computer. And has NO "Print Preview" feature which is even more appalling. The long overdue Print Preview option (which was first included in many non-IE browsers like Netscape) was added into IE 5.5 & higher browsers and saved me lots of computer paper [hey, I sometimes like to Print out certain web pages in IE but I surely want to know how many pages it will take to Print a web page]. That's why I use IE 5.5 SP2 on slow win98se machines. and if a win98se computer cant quite handle ie 5.5 sp2, I'll put on there IE 5.01 SP2. the embedded IE 5 (v5.00.2614.3500) from Win98se is no longer fit for today's world and there are some web sites out there that refuse to work with older versions of IE. about the comment PsycoUnc made about dialup users used to waiting for downloads, those users better find and use a third party download manager or download accelerator to download and resume/continue incomplete downloads. Download managers/acclerators are a major help to dialup users who want to download part of a very large file, stop and then continue downloading the rest of the file at a later time. DONT download a large file without a download manager!
  23. IE 5.00 has plenty of bugs that are fixed in IE 5.01 SP2. Best to upgrade to IE 5.01 SP2 if you dont like using IE 5.5 or IE 6. And some web sites like the Excite Email site do NOT work with IE browsers less than IE 5.5. no more new IE 5.5 SP2 security updates will be made. MS security bulletin MS06-004 notes that support for IE 5.5 SP2 under WinME has ended. The KB905915 update for IE 5.5 SP2 is the last security update. MS will continue to make new security patches for IE 6.0 SP1.
  24. SHEESH randiroo76073! what's your problem man! I just found that direct download link at MDGx's web site. Go there from now on if you want to download MS updates and addons quickly and easily.
  25. And in the last few days I've found even more problems with the ME service pack. good thing I took the liberty AND the time to edit and proofread most of the INF files inside the ME pack. The UNOFFUPD.INF file needs some more tweaking. What I did was add the "SmartReboot = N" string in the [DefaultInstall] section and changed the "wininet.log" string in the [Del.Machine] section to "wininit.log". Without the SmartReboot = N string, the ME pack will display the Restart Computer dialog box before the ME service pack is almost finished installing the updated files. Un-installing the ME service pack did not work as expected as many of the system files were not restored to their original ME versions. I gave the SPUNINST.INF file a MAJOR makeover, changing most of the files that end in ,,,32 to either ,,,1028 or ,,,4. that will make WinME setup overwrite the updated files with the older & original ones from the ME setup files. I also removed the [Copy.Install] and [Copy.Options] sections from the SPUNINST.INF file because copying the original system files to those sections is UNnecessary (and wastes some disk space). Now the SPUNINST.INF file is a little smaller. Also removed the "SmartReboot = N" string in the SPUNINST.INF file so that the Restart Computer dialog box WILL show up after un-installing the ME service pack. I removed references to some system files in the SPUNINST.INF file because some of them do NOT exist in the original WinME setup files (such as hhsetup.dll, unicows.dll and vmm.vxd < those files are not found in the WinME setup files). About these lines in the SPUNINST.INF file: --- "RunDll32.exe %11%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %17%\Preserve.inf,DefaultUninstall" "RunDll32.exe %11%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %17%\Wuinfo.inf,DefaultUninstall" "RunDll32.exe %11%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %17%\Tweaks.inf,DefaultUninstall" "RunDll32.exe %11%\AdvPack.Dll,LaunchINFSection %17%\Qfe.inf,DefaultUninstall" --- I transferred them from the [RunPostCommands.Section] to the [RunPreCommands.Section]. It was like that in the spuninst.inf file of Gape's Win98se service pack. These commands needed to be executed before those 4 INF files get deleted. When these lines were placed in [RunPostCommands.Section], they dont execute and I get error messages saying it can not find those INF files, probably because they were deleted before the ME pack got a chance to execute them. So those lines should really belong in the [RunPreCommands.Section]. I've also modified SPUPDATE.INF file to make a copy of the NIRCMD.EXE file and store it into the WINDOWS\INF folder so that we need it later when we un-install the ME service pack. Without copying the NIRCMD file, the NIRCMD commands in the SPUNINST.INF file will not work because it can not find the NIRCMD file. I also modified the the SPUNINST.INF file so that it will execute the NIRCMD file found in the Windows\Inf folder. I will send the modified INF files to the_guy later this week. what would he do without me!
