and FF 2.0 will use a different setup installer and un-installer than the ones found in FF 1.x versions so installing and removing FF 2.0 should work properly under all 32bit NT-based and 9x-based versions of Windows.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
What, pray tell, Petr, is so strange about that? MS doesn't have a good track record it that department anyways. as that Woody guy would say, "Trustworthy Computing" - see his article about MS06-015 not being offered for Win98/ME: http://www.askwoody.com/newscomments.php?newsid=492 -
nicke85 made a good point. PROBLEMCHYLD forgot to mention what version of IE he used when he had the script error problem. I like Opera web browsers too. I'm currently beta testing Opera 9 and it's in beta 2 (build 8473) stage. some bugs need to be worked out before it reaches final release.

06-015 (Q908531) still not up on WU, but...

Uh the latest shell32.dll patch for WinNT4 SP6a is KB841356 [MS04-037], not Q313829. See security bulletin MS04-037- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS04-037.mspx and MS didnt make KB841356 shell32.dll fixes for Win98/ME. PATHETIC! F***ing shame MS. MOOOOOUUUUU-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Why am I NOT surprised by MS to not offer KB908531 patches for Win98 & ME. Oh well, that's one less patch Win9xME users they dont need to worry about since they'll not make one. -

heh, no kidding someday you'll get it note to the_guy and MDGx: There are problems that come up after installing the KB911567 updates whether official or unofficial. Outlook Express users may have problems opening WAB [Windows Address Book] files after applying the KB911567 update for OE. Problem is noted in Microsoft KB article 917288: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288 MDGx should list the side effect of what KB911567 does to Outlook Express on his IE page. AND the problem with KB911567 is also mentioned on the Askwoody.com web site [hmm, does that Woody guy hate MS or something?] -
you might want to replace your Sis motherboard or sis 2.0 usb card with a different board or usb 2.0 card with ALi or VIA chipsets. At least VIA post their USB 2.0 drivers online, ditto for Adaptec. Orangeware USB 2.0 drivers are not available from the Orangeware web site (at least not directly).

reading the latest post on the Firefox un-installer bug on Win9x systems: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338752 The older Firefox remover can be downloaded here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir...tallFirefox.zip Extract the UninstallFirefox.exe from that ZIP file and run the uninstaller to remove FF 1.5.0.2, 1.5.0.3 or 1.5.0.4 off a machine that has Win95, 98 or ME. the older remover is not needed for win2k/xp/2k3.

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!
erpdude8 replied to whocrazy's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
THANKS, Bigbrit. Will check out Memtest86+ on try it out on all my computers. MDGx, CLASYS and others should try this tool out to see if they have good or bad memory chips on their computers. I'd like to see some testimony from them about Memtest86+. -
yeah I agree with Petr on this one on using the latest beta which is currently beta 3. I have contacted the_guy recently and he told me there will be a beta 4 (NOT a release candidate) coming soon.

The UPnP security patches for Win98se, ME & XP were released in December 2001 so the upnp security fixes ARE included in XP SP1/SP1a and SP2. note that UPNP is NOT included in Win2000. -
98SE WU Ending So How About IE 6 SP1 Updates?
erpdude8 replied to Eck's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
if only somebody can create an EXE installer that will automatically install IE6 SP1 and its updates [if IE6 SP1 can be a selectable option in the SP] all in one stroke while installing the 98se SP, that would be great! -
I may be going out on a limb but it could be "none of the above" or "all of the above". It does NOT matter whether using Format.com or Dskmaint.dll when formatting drives as long as your drives work properly on your computer after they are formatted. FAT12 is used on floppy disks and/or partitions that are 16Mb or less. FAT16/FAT32 is used on hard drives and removable drives such as Jaz/Zip drives. note - dskmaint.dll is not included in w2k/xp; only found in win95/98/me

Tearing my hair out over memory problems!

I did get a chance to test out MemTest-86 horsecharles. Pretty good. A little better than the MS Windows Memory Diagnostic tool. Not sure with RAMExam. The makers of RAMExam have a demo but the demo version is nearly worthless. as for Fredledingue's question, the SP upgrade may support up to 2 Gb of RAM. Win95, 98 & ME can theoretically access up to 2 gigs of RAM and no higher than that. Ah, that MemTest86 memory diagnostic tool is a major keeper. I've tested this tool on all my computers whether they have old or new memory chips. Kudos to horsecharles for introducting me to it. -
well, we all should hope the retail boxed versions of 98se are legit. dont want anybody using a fake copy of win98se.

um this is off topic CLASYS but restart the computer and then run the IE905495 patch as normal; it should be NO big deal as long as the patch does its job as expected. were your IE settings set at medium or low? if so (and the IE912812 update was installed), then run URLMONFX.EXE to replace the urlmon.dll file with the one that should make the Windows Update site work correctly again.
-
GEE, I wonder why you dont like Firefox browsers, HTS-500. Have they been unstable on your computer or something? I use FF 1.5.0.4 on my bro's XP SP2 and my WinME computer and they work fine; haven't received any Firefox crashes on both computers. Did you test the FF 2.0 alpha 3 on a Win9x system, ivanbuto? You didnt say which version of Windows you have tested Firefox 2.0 on.

I dont expect the June IE Cumulative update to fix the URLMON.DLL problem KB912812 (April IE Cumulative update) for IE6 SP1 has. so URLMONFX.EXE will need to be used after installing the upcoming June Internet Explorer update which should come out either June 13 or June 14.

see USBMan's Sis USB page on how to setup USB 1.x and USB 2.0 with SIS USB chipsets: http://www.usbman.com/Guides/SiS%20USB%20T...nd%20Tricks.htm Sis 7001 USB chipsets have problems working properly under XP. there's a patch that fix that problem.

OH MDGX! The Firefox un-installer problem is NOT fixed in FF 1.5.0.4. Still had the problem removing FF 1.5 under Win9x. I think I sent you the old Firefox uninstaller from FF 1.5.0.1 that works under Win95/98/ME. You should post it up on your web site. I'll give you instructions on how Win95/98/ME users should use the older FF un-installer to remove Firefox 1.5.0.2, 1.5.0.3 or 1.5.0.4. I had been told by Mozilla group that FF 2.0 will use a new installer/un-installer that should work properly under all 32bit versions of Windows. so the un-installer problem of Firefox will be fixed in FF 2.0.

You can delete most of these lines from the CONFIG.SYS file, randiroo76073. All I have on the CONFIG.SYS file on MY old Win98 SE computer is the "DOS=HIGH,UMB" line. Everything else you can remove and your Win98se computer should run fine. btw - what is WUPG?

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
well there is no point in installing the MS01-059 UPnP update for Win98 w/out the XP ICS Client. It's useless without the client software. the XP SP1 & SP2 versions of the XP ICS Client EXE package [netsetup.exe] do include the updated files from the MS01-059 update for Win98 though they are dated newer than the ones found in MS01-059. -
and the so-called "Win98 core update" that updates 98fe to 98se may not be reliable and can cause even more problems to Win98. Better to do a FULL upgrade from Win98FE to Win98SE by purchasing the Win98se CD if you can find one online OR find some sites that have the actual W98se setup files and download them from there since MS had retired support for Win98se Microsoft has published a list of resellers and companies who distributed illegal or counterfeit copies of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 at these pages: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/partners/default.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/partners/alerts.mspx AVOID doing business with these people! Look for other vendors who sell those "good" copies of Windows XP instead. Windows 98 SE, on the other hand, is another story -erpdude

That is one question only Microsoft can answer. Anyone heard from Gape as to when a new version of the unofficial 98se service pack will be posted? It has been six months since v2.1a came out.
