I can actually use iexpress.exe & wextract.exe from either WinXP SP2 or Win2003 SP1 but I MUST use makecab.exe from IE6 SP1 because that version retains the Modified Dates of files.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
try again for KB817914. maybe it's still available. I've tested MDGx's unofficial MP917734 patch for WMP 7.1. It does NOT work, even with WMP 7.1 installed. I believe most versions of the WMP 7.1 files are version 7.01 instead of 7.10 such as original WMPUI.DLL file which is version 7.01.00.3055 (not 7.10.00.3055; WHOOPS!). KB917734 for WMP 7.1 has WMPUI.DLL version 7.10.00.3078. MDGx will need to redo the MP917734 fix for WMP 7.1 [hint- from its SED file, change TargetFileVersion of WMPUI.DLL from 7.10 to 7.01]. Also there should only be TWO unofficial KB832353 WMP updates for Win95/98/ME instead of three [just Q832353.EXE and MP832353.EXE] WM832353.EXE should be removed as MP832353.EXE does work under Win98FE and Win95 as long as the LaunchWMPInf.exe finds either WMP 7.1 or 9.0 installed and will install the appropriate files. Use Q832353.EXE when updating ONLY the msdxm.ocx file for WMP 6.4. LaunchWMPInf.exe from MP832353.exe and KB832353.exe for ME will NOT update the msdxm.ocx file if either WMP 7.1 or 9.0 is NOT installed and WMP 6.4 is by itself. -
thanks, war59312. Gurgelmeyer can use either v5.1.2600.1271 or v6.1 of Qfecheck.exe in the next release of his service pack for win2k.
-
does this problem happen with older versions of windows installer? or newer ones? or even both? perhaps Win2000 users should install MSI 3.1 first, then install Gurgelmeyer's SP.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
not sure if these IE/XML hotfixes are still available for Win98/ME- KB900732 ieakeng.dll for IE6 SP1/SP2 KB817914 inetcpl.cpl for IE6 SP1 KB909363 msxml3.dll for XML 3.0 SP7 see if you guys can obtain these. -
I used makecab.exe from the IEAK 6 SP1 pack which is version 5.1.2600.1106 dated 8/29/2002 and it also does not have the date-time stamp problem. You might also want to edit your SED file of creating ME SPs and display a message like "This Service Pack is for Windows ME only" when someone tries to run the ME SP under a non-ME version of Windows. I think you have to edit the TargetWin9xVersion line like this: TargetWin9xVersion=4.90.3000:%OSWarn%:0K Then in the [string] section of the SED file, put under it- OSWarn=This Service Pack is for Windows ME only I will make beta 3 of the 98fe sp2.01 to something similar to that.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Beta 2 of the Win98fe SP2.01 is now posted- <link to it now removed> fixes/additions: -ms active accessibility 2.0 -updated dcom config tools for win98 -KB908519, KB918547, Q260710 hotfixes added -unofficial fixes [krnl386.exe, voltrack.vxd] -Q272620 sysdm.cpl fix removed; mis-identifies 98 as 98se installing this beta of the 98fe Sp2.01 now changes the "short date" setting from the [intl] section of the win.ini file from m/d/yy to m/d/yyyy to ensure most programs (like File Manager which uses the date settings from win.ini) display four digits for the year. next beta that will be out in early August will be created from the IExpress tool from IE6 SP1 and will display a different message when attempting to run the 98fe SP2.01 pack under other versions of Windows. -
Petr hit it right on the nose. the XP SP2 versions of iexpress/makecab/wextract do NOT take account of the Modified Dates of the files I used to make the betas of the Win98FE SP2. I've decided to create them by using the iexpress/makecab/wextract EXE files from IE6 SP1 which DO retain the Modified Dates of files. AND the MAKECAB problem also happens when using the Win2000 and Win2003/Vista versions of makecab.exe. Do NOT use any more Win2000 versions of iexpress/makecab/wextract to make future releases of the ME SP, the_guy. Use those 3 files provided from the IEAK 6.0 SP1 pack. I can send them to you if you want or you can extract them from the ieak6.exe file. You will need to download the ieak6.exe file from this site first: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6...EN-US/ieak6.exe then extract the iexpress.exe, makecab.exe and wextract.exe files onto a folder. personally I put those 3 files into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder.

Enable48BitLBA | Break the 137Gb barrier!
erpdude8 replied to LLXX's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
take your time LLXX. remember that you have to create a 48-bit LBA driver NOT just for Win98se, but also for Win98 FE and WinME. you cant just create a driver just for Win98se and ignore the other versions of Windows. -
AVOID or REMOVE the KB828026 WMP update off your computer, FixitMad. The KB832353 WMP updates fix the URL script problems with the KB828026 patches. See here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832353 Windows Media Player 7.1 Date Time Version Size File name Operating system -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14-Nov-2003 17:24 6.4.9.1129 844,560 Msdxm.ocx Windows 2000 19-Nov-2003 21:07 7.10.0.3076 815,104 Wmpcore.dll Windows 2000 21-Nov-2003 18:40 6.4.7.1129 845,584 Msdxm.ocx Windows Millennium Edition 21-Nov-2003 18:40 7.10.0.3076 815,104 Wmpcore.dll Windows Millennium Edition dang, Microsoft should have posted the KB832353 updates instead of the buggy KB828026 updates at Windows Update. These two updated files are included in IE6 SP1's version of Windows Media Player 6.4, eidenk (it's version 6.4.07.1121) Download the WMP 6.4 CAB file here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6...US/mplayer2.cab and see for yourself. Those two files are on there. Beats having to install those two patches by just installing this updated release of WMP 6.4.

Try moving the SMARTVSD.VXD file from the IOSUBSYS folder into the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder, azagahl. Some SMART apps may work only if the SMARTVSD.VXD file is in the SYSTEM folder while others may want that VXD file in the IOSUBSYS folder. After moving the file there, restart the computer and see what happens.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
MDGx will also need to modify the names of the unofficial KB832353 Media Player updates and I have tested these unofficial WMP 832353 patches on my machines. First of all "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.0/7.1 Patch" should be titled "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.1 Patch" as it will NOT work for WMP 7.0. I've found out that this unofficial WMP patch [WM832353.EXE] will only work if WMP 7.1 is installed. If WMP 6.4 is installed and NOT WMP 7.1, the LaunchWMPInf.exe file in WM832353.EXE will do NOTHING; NO files will be updated. Ditto for "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.0/7.1/9.0 Patch" as that should be changed to "Unofficial WMP 6.4/7.1/9.0 Patch" < for this one [MP832353.EXE] to work, either WMP 7.1 or WMP 9 has to be installed AND should work under ALL versions of Win98, NOT just the SE edition. If WMP 6.4 is installed only and NOT WMP 7.1 or 9.0 use the Q832353.EXE file to update Media Player 6.4 as the WM832353.EXE and MP832353.EXE files will NOT update WMP 6.4 alone. Description of this titled "Unofficial WMP 6.4 Patch for Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2" should be changed to "Unofficial WMP 6.4 Patch for Windows 95/98/98 SE/ME" when updating WMP 6.4 only. -
My recommendation would be just to extract the files from the original packages, e.g. using Total Commander. It is very quick and convenient. I suppose the_guy has all the original packages, then I'd just marked all these files, pressed Alt-F9, checked to overwrite old files - and I'd have all the latest files in one filder. Then I'd remove all .INF and .CAT files and then using the function "Synchronize Dirs" function (VERY useful function) with "by content" and "ignore content" functions I'd test if all files are present and identical byte-by-byte. As a bonus I'd be sure that all files are really coming from the declared source and that they are not damaged. This is V2 of beta4 already. V1 of beta4 was released on May 6th.Petr But Total Commander is NOT free software; it's shareware and you have to pay/register to have full benefits of it and/or to remove any shareware nag messages. Attribute Changer is freeware. guess I'll wait for V3 of beta 4.

i have yet to test out b4 of the me service pack. KB896358 files for ME have wrong date/time stamps. updated SNMP files also have wrong date/time stamps. in fact many (not all) of the files [like jscript.dll] included have incorrect dates and times. Extract the files onto the temp folder, use the program Attribute Changer from this site: http://webplaza.pt.lu/~rpetges/ Install the program, right-click on each of the files and choose Change Attributes. Change the Creation Date/Time on many of the files with Attribute Changer. IExpress/Makecab uses the Created Date/Time [NOT the Modified Date/Time] to date and time files when creating IExpress packages (I just found out about this). This may take some time fixing many of the files' date/time stamps. maybe I'll wait for V2 of beta 4 to be released.

suggestion for the next beta is to include ALL unofficial updates in the ME pack as part of Main Hotfixes & Updates instead of having Unofficial Updates as an option (and remove the Unofficial Updates option). the upcoming beta 2 of the 98fe SP 2.01 pack I made will install both official and unofficial fixes for win98 when Main Hotfixes & Updates is selected. and maybe you give a copy of beta 4 of the ME service pack to MDGx so that he can post it up on his site. Mytempdir seems to download slow, even with broadband connections and MDGx's server is much faster. The /QN switch does NOT work for Windows Installer 2.0. That switch is valid starting from MSI 3.0 & higher. Use /Q switch instead.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
sure MDGx. can you also ask the_guy if he can post his ME service pack at your site? he has just released beta 4 of the ME SP. beta 1 of the unofficial win98fe sp has been removed from Mytempdir site. beta 2 should be up by either this friday or next monday. -
Actually galahs, Firefox 2.0 will be based on Gecko version 1.81, NOT 1.8. Beta 1 of FF 2.0 is mentioned here: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=10874

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Like I told MDGx, NO security patches released on July 11 for Win98/98se/ME because Microsoft ended support for Windows 98/ME on July 11 (probably at 12am midnight). -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Hate to say this MDGx but there are NO July 11 security updates for Win98/ME. MS has officially dropped all support for Win98/ME. Wonder if you would like to make a "Win2000 updates + patches + hotfixes" thread in the Hotstream forum? -
MS patch (mspatcha.dll) - how to use?
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
bad news about the WTL Patcher application is that it only works properly under windows 2000, xp, server 2003 or vista. Run the WTL patcher tool under windows 95, 98 or me and the patcher's functions will do nothing even with the windows installer 2.0 and the mspatcha.dll file installed under W9XME. -
When a new & latest Service Pack 2.5 ?
erpdude8 replied to bestofcomputer's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
AND there are also some problems that have gone UNnoticed (that I have found) especially when removing/un-installing Gape's 98se SP. for example, removing the 98se SP restores the dhtmled.ocx file from original 98se setup files, which it should NOT do if IE 5.01 or higher is installed. it also removes the "Show File Attributes in Detail View" during un-install which it should NOT do too. so there are more issues to deal with the 98se SP. I think I can fix many of those. if I have time, maybe I can make a beta of the next release of the 98se SP if it is ok with Gape. I wont do it without Gape's approval. -
well easier said than done, LLXX. until I see an actual shell32.dll fix that fixes the 4Gb problem I dont think there will be one. "actions speak louder than words" good luck with the esdi_506.pdr 48bit LBA fix. you'll have to make patches for BOTH Win98 and WinME. you have a lot to prove, LLXX.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
Alright Petr. The steps they mention are not accurate. Here's how I got the XP version of Notepad to choke on that bug- 1. Right-click on an empty area on the Desktop, select New, then choose Text Document (just leave the newly created TXT file named New Text Document.txt). 2. Open Notepad by double-clicking on the New Text Document.txt file and type in "AAAA BBB CCC DDDDD" (without the quotes) and Close Notepad & Save your changes. 3. Now double-click on New Text Document.txt. Notepad should just display "□□□□□□□□□" instead of the letters I mentioned earlier. Again, a reminder that ONLY the Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 & Vista editions of Notepad have this problem. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
almost forgot to mention the changes included in beta 1 of 98fe SP: fixed several install and removal problems with the pack; updates included > Q269388, KB917344 (Jscript.dll), U891711, U912919 and OLE Automation v2.40.4528 fix. also included is an updated version of Metapad. the next beta will have the other missing updates like KB908519, U249824, Krnl386.exe fix and U918547. It will also have MS active accessibility 2.0 and updated Dcom 98 config tools. it should be ready by the start of the third week of july. -
that's because the_guy did NOT actually post up beta 4 of the ME SP yet. I'll contact him immediately and have him post it up whenever he is ready. I've emailed the_guy and he said he just needs one more thing and it will be online soon. Note to Tareek: NATIVE unicode support in Windows ME is NOT possible because unicode support for Win9xME systems is LIMITED. If you want FULL Unicode support, use Windows 2000, XP or Vista. Win2k/XP/Vista are fully unicode compliant.
