you can find newer versions of the USB Viewer app [usbview.exe] bundled inside the Windows Server 2003 SP1 DDK and Windows Vista DDK. these versions resolve the problems listed in MS article 838100- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838100/en-us also, can you try out usbview.exe version 5.00.2195.1620 here and see if it works on your Win98se computer.

is there a way to install IE7 in 98se?
erpdude8 replied to notinthisworld's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Even better, use K-Meleon! or use Opera web browser. Opera 9.02 still supports win9xme/win2000 systems unlike IE7 and Opera loads about as fast as K-Meleon. I'm currently beta testing Opera 9.10 from the Opera Desktop Team's blog page: http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/ -
No QFECHECK.EXE in "C:\WINDOWS", Torin? uh-oh the_guy should be able to fix this easily. the ME SP should have installed QFECHECK.EXE in the WINDOWS folder. yup, QFECHECK.EXE, for some reason, was not included in ME Service pack beta 7. if that EXE file was in there, the SPUPDATE.INF file made no reference to install it. The [Machine] section of SPUPDATE.INF file should list QFECHECK.EXE. If it isnt there, then it should be added on there in the next release. files from [Machine] section get installed onto the "Windows" folder this issue also can be fixed easily. remove ALL references to 918547UN.INF from the SPUPDATE.INF file as the 918547UN.INF file no longer exists.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
thanks. please revise unofficial Q918144 fix to include newer MSREPL40.DLL file v4.0.9417 from Q910906 hotfix for WS2003. Note, the_guy and MDGx that we do NOT "register" the MSREPL40.DLL file with REGSVR32. I did this on any 32bit version of Windows and it produced an error message. NONE of the MS Jet 4.0 SPs and hotfixes register the MSREPL40.DLL file. -
At this link is clearly written: I'd not believe in this tool for bigger disks and in general - are you sure that it is 100% compatible with MS-DOS 7.1 and 8.0 and Windows 95/SE/Me?. And do you know it's license? Is it illegal to redistribute it too, I've written to the author and not received the permission to add it to the SESP.As Mr. Loew explained here approx. year ago, according to DMCA it is legal to patch the software to correct its bugs. Yes, to be fully compliant with all licenses, it would be better to distribute just patches, not full programs, but since I have seen that even Microsoft recommends http://www.bootdisk.com/ that contains MS fdisk and format utilities I see no reason for it. Petr great points, Petr. Mr. "patchworks" here doesnt get it. Free FDISK is OUTDATED and cant support HDs beyond 128Gb, hence 48bit LBA support is barely non-existent (or at least buggy) in Free FDISK. And documentation on Free FDISK is kinda lame and does not mention full 48bit LBA support on large HDs.

Last week I told MDGx about the Undelete Plus file recovery tool from this site: http://www.undelete-plus.com/ It's kinda like the old MS Undelete tool from the DOS 6.x days, except Undelete Plus can also work under FAT32 and NTFS volumes. see if you guys can try out this tool and post your results in this thread.

But some people may want and/or need it, PROBLEMCHYLD. It is an update to a component of Windows 98 SE (yes, it's an optional component; but it's a component available to users on the setup disk, who may have chosen a full installation). Come on, think about other users here. i agree it should be optional i don't have webtv on my machine so no need for the update right. bristols and PROBLEMCHYLD, the WEBTV files for Win98se only get updated if the original files were installed. If they were not installed, they do not get updated. therefore, it is optional. Note to PROBLEMCHYLD: are u still using McAfee VirusScan 9.1 and those other mcafee apps you had installed on your machine?

yeah, absolutely right, LLXX! I mean, what's so special for them to make Firefox3/Gecko 1.9 specifically use W2k/XP API/DLL files; a real pain below the waist for w98/me users!

David, please check the Windows 98 version by typing VER at the DOS prompt or by opening the System control panel applet before obtaining the correct SP2 pack. Windows 98 first edition is version 4.10.1998 and Windows 98 second edition is version 4.10.2222.

...and a lot of the stuff in this forum here violates the EULA, but M$ doesn't seem to care...However in this case I do recommend Free FDISK since it has some better features. eh, sure some of the "stuff" here may break MS's EULA, but they no longer apply when Win98/ME are no longer supported by M$. nice work, Petr. will include updated Fdisk.exe & Format.com tools in next release of 98fe SP.

98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
In this curent release I'm afraid the D*ZIP.DLL files are overwritten. But I'll update 98SE2ME to check for newer versions first, and if 4.xx, 5.xx or newer versions are found, they won't be replaced anymore. Yes, D*ZIP dlls come from DynaZip [shareware]. I guess MS licensed some earlier versions [3.00.07, 3.00.08 etc] for use with ZIPDLDR.DLL [all Win9x/ME versions]. ZIPFLDR from WinXP does not need [as far as I know] the D*ZIP dlls. But there are some older apps/tools/etc that install those 2 DLLs. Win95/95B OSR2.0/95C OSR2.5 setup CDs install DUNZIPNT.DLL 2.00.19. Older AOL clients [6.0/7.0/8.0 ?] install some of those DLLs [older versions] too. I have latest versions [as of April 25 2005]: DUNZIP32.DLL 5.00.07 DZIP32.DLL 5.00.07 If anyone wants them, please e-mail me [click the blue E-mail link]: http://www.mdgx.com/form.htm OOOOH, MDGx. can you send me v5.00.07 of DUNZIP32.DLL and DZIP32.DLL files? older versions of DUNZIP32.DLL (from 5.00.03 and earlier) are vulnerable to the dunzip32.dll buffer overflow security problem mentioned at these sites: http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/429361/30/0/threaded http://secunia.com/advisories/19451/ http://www.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Sec...4/msg00000.html -
hmm, weird. Is QFECheck.exe installed in the Windows folder? the ME service pack should have installed that file under there. also, the ROOTSUPD.EXE file needs to be updated. New ROOTSUPD.EXE file I downloaded [234kb] has newer IE certificates than one found in beta 7. should be included in next release.

you may want to discuss about the problem with RP and scandisk/chkdsk in the Revolutions Pack Lite thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=58357 BTW - Win9xME/DOS CHKDSK command can only check FAT12/FAT16 volumes for problems. Win9xME CHKDSK can detect FAT32 volumes BUT will not scan them for problems. SCANDISK must be used to check and fix FAT32 partitions.

MDGx, does unofficial Jet 4.0 KB918144 fix also work under Win2000? you wrote on your page that it's for Win9x/ME/NT4 -
Part of the reason why Firefox 2.0 crashes under Windows 95 is that it doesn't understand Unicode. It can help, though I would have to test my theory. WRONG, BenoitRen! You have NOT been paying attention as to why FF2 doesnt work under Win95: LOOK HERE! https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353537 even if the unicows.dll file is installed on a Win95 system, FF 2.0 STILL crashes when attempting to run FF2 perhaps I wasnt clear on that earlier, sorry for the inconvienience BTW - I'm beta testing the latest nightly build of Seamonkey 1.1b under WinME/XP - stable same with K-Meleon browser found here: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/

The complete list of hotfixes & updates for Windows 98se
erpdude8 replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x/ME
where on the WinME CD? do u have a copy of the updated Wpnpins file? Wpnpins addon is already included in Win2000/XP also, PROBLEMCHYLD, are u still using McAfee VirusScan 9.1 or not? see my latest posts in the "unofficial & mcafee" thread -
not possible, BenoitRen. Firefox 2.0, both the RC and final releases, crash under Win95. so forget about using Unicows under Win95, use it under Win98 or WinME instead to run Firefox 2.0 or 3.0 BTW - final release of FF 2.0 posted here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ well, ivanbuto, there hasnt been much of talk about Firefox 3 and Gecko 1.9 stuff because nobody, I mean NOBODY has done some ACTUAL testing of FF 3.0 and have mentioned how well FF 3 does on a Win9xME system! perhaps you should start testing out FF 3.0 in your spare time and tell us how FF 3 runs on your Win9xME machines. Go here and start testing the latest "nightly" build of FF 3.0 alpha 1: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir...y/latest-trunk/ personally, I'll hold off until Mozilla releases a public beta of Firefox 3.0 which may happen either near the end of 2006 or in early 2007

the user must click Yes every time to continue running HTML Help [%windir%\HH.EXE], otherwise nothing happens.I have recreated RUNHELP.CAB [contains RUNHELP.INF] without the expired certificate. Running HTMLHELP.HTM now properly runs HTML Help. File size is now smaller: reduced from 6325 to 192 bytes. RUNHELP.CAB [right-click to save the CAB file] HTH MDGx, I am wondering if Win98 FE [first edition] may also have RUNHELP.CAB file that has the expired certificate. If so, can you re-create the one for Win98fe too? ok, I have also tested this problem under WinME and running HTMLHELP.HTM under ME also produces the "expired certificate" error. so can you also re-create the RUNHELP.CAB file for WinME?

Thanks, Petr. the MS06-061 security patch was revised for Windows 2000 SP4 only. other MS06-061 patches remain the same. noted in Win2k Hotstream forum also MDGx, the final release of IE7 has been posted at the Microsoft IE site -
the MS06-061 security update for Windows 2000 SP4 has been revised. see here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-061.mspx wonder if this security patch will make it into the next release of the unofficial Win2k SP5.02 pack

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
AH, CRUD the BROWSE98.EXE "BROWSELC.DLL + BROWSEUI.DLL" patch that updates the BROWSEUI.DLL file MADE the unofficial OE911567 patch [OE911567.EXE] for Outlook Express 6.0 SP1 useless, erroneously saying that IE6.0 SP1 has to be installed BUT I have BOTH IE 6.0 SP1 and OE 6.0 SP1 installed. I looked at the contents of the OE911567.exe file and that patch does check for the browseui.dll file. perhaps a version range should be specified in the SED file for browseui.dll like 6.00.2800.1106-6.00.2800.9999 OE911567.exe should be revised to fix this problem AND should include a dialog box saying "Do you want to install this update?" Running OE911567.exe performs an "immediate" install of files with no prompt to install the update or not [oh, I HATE that!] Q911567.exe for Outlook Express 5.5 SP2 should also be revised if newer 5.5 SP2 builds of BROWSEUI.DLL prevent the installation of the OE 911567 patch for OE 5.5 SP2. I got word that the OE911567.exe and Q911567.exe patches (and the IE905495 msieftp.dll fixes) were made from the_guy. note to the_guy: revise these patches that I have noted above and include the "Do you want to install this update?" prompt in these patches.
