  1. never going to happen, Xenomorph c'mon folks, read this thread as to why Cleartype won't ever be implemented in Win2k: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=6245 not possible for Win2k, I'm afraid. see this: http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/in...php/t74665.html sorry to bring bad news about that but life is sometimes cruel at least it's nice of Tihiy to make a Win2k Revo Pack now that I've migrated my relative's computers from Win98se/WinME to Win2000 and have installed Gurgelmeyer's Unofficial Win2k SP 5.1.2195.24 refresh pack on their machines -erpdude
  2. sort of. DX6 Media includes a few stuff that are not included in DirectX 9.0c such as DirectAnimation (though IE 5.x has newer DirectAnimation files than DX6M), WMP 6.0 and the Intel Indeo codecs. Win98 FE originally has so many outdated components, especially older DX Media files that DX6 Media is pretty much essential under Win98 FE. Unofficial Windows 98 FE SP version 2.3.0 posted here: http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/driv...FESP230EN-R.EXE changes- -replaced MSE (WSH) 5.6 with MSE (WSH) 5.7 -added MDAC 2.1 (from IE 5.x) -added Unofficial MS Paint Graphic Filters pack -added DirectX6 Media "DirectAnimation" fixes -fixed minor installation problem when installing the updated dsound.dll file for DirectX 7 -removed option of installing TTF Font Properties Extension; this release installs it when installing the Win98fe fixes -added option of installing the WinME Defrag, RegEdit and Scandskw tools -added permanent 891711 user*.* 4.10.2003 fix Starting from v2.2.0, the Win98fe SPs are pretty much AIOs (all-in-ones); hence the sizes of the 98fe SPs are quite bigger (hey, the SPs for Win2000/XP/2003 are at least 100Mb in size compared to the size of the 2.2 & 2.3 releases of the 98fe SP)
  3. Gran Paradiso (aka. Firefox 3) is still not in beta phase yet but the alpha 8 release is now available here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.0a8/releasenotes/
  4. and the sad part of Apple Quicktime 7.2 is that is requires at least WinXP SP2. Quicktime 7.2 will NOT install under Win2000 as I've tested this on my cousin's Win2000 machine. CURSE YOU, APPLE Inc. eh, I'm no longer mad about this situation, I got even. found a way to install QT 7.2 under Win2k and it involves editing the QT 7.2 MSI package in the MS Orca tool. Following someone's instructions here: http://www.infosecblog.org/2007/07/got_win..._want_to_r.html Change the LaunchCondition table "VersionNT" entry from "501" [that's XP] to "500" [and that's basically W2K] and save the changes to the MSI file in Orca. Then placed gdiplus.dll file in the \Program Files\Quicktime\ folder and QT 7.2 will run under Win2k. But these 7.0x & 7.1x versions of QT are prone to recent security flaws, Rick
  5. Ok, the 98fe service pack project is now being resumed. Unofficial Win98 standard edition SP version 2.2.0 (no longer available) changes: -added DirectX6 Media -msvbvm60.dll v6.0.9798 from KB930828 -msvcrt.dll v6.1.9848.0 from Win2000 SP4 KB932590 hotfix -OLE Automation 2.40.4530 (KB917423) with oleaut32.dll 2.40.4519 (KB924053/MS07-043) security fix -updated canyon.mid & passport.mid files from Win2000 -flourish.mid, onestop.mid & town.mid files from WinME/XP/Vista -new Root Certificates update -new unofficial Aug. 2007 DST update -updated dhtmled.ocx & triedit.dll files from Windows Server 2003 SP2 -updated Tahoma truetype fonts from Windows Server 2003 SP2 -MSE/Windows Script 5.6 build 8832 from Windows Server 2003 SP2 -updated USP10.DLL file version 1.422.3790.3959 from Windows Server 2003 SP2 known issues: -a reminder that this SP is for English Win98fe systems only. installing this SP on non-English Win98 FE systems may cause unforseen problems. -If unofficial MSE 5.7 is installed under Win98 FE and the unofficial 98fe SP is being installed the SP will overwrite MSE 5.7 with MSE 5.6 build 8832 from the SP. Also the SP may prevent the installation of older releases of unofficial MSE 5.7 under Win98 FE because unofficial MSE 5.7 detects certain versions of some MSE files that may not qualify for the installation of unofficial MSE 5.7. Don't worry, the next scheduled release of the 98fe SP coming later this month will include MSE 5.7. Also, you can download and install a revised version of the unofficial MSE 5.7 addon if you can't wait for the next release of the SP. You will need to re-install Unofficial MSE 5.7 after installing Unofficial 98fe SP v2.2.0.
  6. I would keep the 4.10.2233 USER*.* files [Q891711] because they fix the .ANI exploit.HTH MDGx, I may try to test the user*.* v4.10.2233 files under Win98 FE and will let you know if they work correctly. I may be dumping the "temporary" kb891711 files and use the "permanent" user*.* files. It's a shame that the anonymous person hasn't made "permanent" 891711 fixes for Win95 sr2/WinME and I'm pretty sure BenoitRen is disappointed there is no "permanent" user*.* fix made for Win95 SR2
  7. have you contacted Woody Leonard about the "javascript" exploit, eidenk? at least Woody (the self-proclaimed MS software victim) could get Microsoft's attention about it. Contact him here: http://www.askwoody.com/contactus.php also try explaining about the JS exploit to the folks at Secunia or US-Cert even. make it well known about the problem note to MDGx: can you revise your OLE automation update to include these files- asycfilt.dll 2.40.4530 > from Win2k KB917423 oleaut32.dll 2.40.4519 > from VB6 KB924053 (oant4.dll) v2.40.4531 (oa2k.dll) doesn't work correctly under Win9x/NT4 - fixes security problems in security bulletin MS07-043 olepro32.dll 5.0.4530 > from Win2k KB917423 stdole2.tlb 2.40.4530 > from Win2k KB917423
  8. what version of Win98 do you have installed on your machine, bloo? Is it Win98 first edition (4.10.1998) or Win98 second edition (4.10.2222)? right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties to display the version of Win98.
  9. Again, same here. The file wmp.dll has a version number 9.0.0.3354 where 9.0.0.3349 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled. you need to re-register the WMP.DLL file after updating it, bristols and noguru. Run unregmp2.exe with the /updatewmp switch. otherwise, you won't be able to use the newer wmp.dll file with WMP9. you'll find the UNREGMP2.EXE file in the \WINDOWS\INF\ folder. Type in the Run dialog box the following: "C:\WINDOWS\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UPDATEWMP" and you should be able to use Windows Media Player 9 with the newer WMP.DLL file. The unofficial MSE 5.7 download for Win98/ME is definitely FLAWED and should NOT check for previous MSE version of the files. I will say that the unofficial MSE 5.7 download for WinNT4 should be REMOVED as the MSE 5.7 files do NOT work correctly under NT4 as I've confirmed they don't work under NT4 (but at least the MSE 5.7 files do run okay under Win98/ME). AND when I extracted and installed the unofficial MSE 5.7 files under Win98se, the cscript.exe and wscript.exe files are installed in the WRONG folder. CSCRIPT.EXE should go into the \WINDOWS\COMMAND\ folder while WSCRIPT.EXE should be installed in the \WINDOWS\ folder, just like in MSE 5.6. So I demand the removal of the unofficial MSE 5.7 download for NT4 off MDGx's web site and the revising of the unofficial MSE 5.7 download for Win98/ME.
  10. I believe Ad-Aware 2007 version 7.0.2.1 is the first version to be fully Vista compatible. The Majorgeeks site says so. I'll have to test this version on my mom's Vista Home Basic laptop today and find out. Before I had to use Ad-Aware SE 1.06r1 under Vista since previous releases of Ad-Aware 2007 did not work under Windows Vista. all right. Lavasoft has now confirmed Vista compatibility with v7.0.2.1 of the Ad-Aware 2007 software here: http://www.lavasoft.com/company/blog/?p=257
  11. wow, dencorso, you have VIP.386 version 4.10.2228? GREAT! I believe that is found in the KB329128 hotfix for Win98. I think it is now available if Win98se users can ask for it now since it wasn't available a few years ago. See my latest post on how to request hotfixes from Microsoft here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...31579&st=80 all you have to do is fill out the Microsoft Hotfix Request Form mentioned at the link from my latest post and voila, you'll instantly get a response from MS support with a "secret" link to get the hotfix and the password to extract its contents. Gape, if you need some more Win98se hotfixes, just go to the Microsoft Hotfix Request page, fill out the required info there and MS may give them to you.
  12. msvcrt.dll v6.1.9847.0 works on BOTH Win98 SE AND WinME, dencorso. I know this because that file works fine under WinME and even under Win95. I've used that file on other 9x versions of Windows and found no problems with that file. Thanks for the feedback, erpdude8! I've now gotten a NEWER msvcrt.dll file. it's version 6.1.9848.0!!! you guys won't believe where I got this newer msvcrt.dll file (take a wild guess) this one fixes a daylight saving bug as mentioned in ms kb article 932590 Please download my OSR2 Update Rollup pack again, bristols. It's now beta 6 and you can get it here: http://www.usaupload.net/d/9axq0j28l15
  13. And why not you? I've tried oa2k.dll from VB6-KB924053-x86-ENU.exe (update for 2000) and it seems to work. I'm no longer using any Win9x OSes on any of my home PCs, Tihiy. they all have WinXP. and my cousin's PC now has Win2k instead of Win98se [he wanted W2K in the first place anyway]. soon I'll be upgrading my aunt's Dell PC from Win98 SE to Win2000 SP4. try surfing the net with IE6 with oa2k.dll on your computer Tihiy and check if things work all right. OK. I'm fully recovered from a bad cold I caught last week and I did test the newer oleaut32.dll files on my next door neighbor's Win98se machine. oleaut32.dll v2.40.4519 from VS6 KB924053 update is good. a little different story with oleaut32.dll v2.40.4531 as I DO get some scripting errors when loading certain HTML pages in IE. Once I switched the OS from Win98 SE to WinME I re-tested builds 4519 and 4531 with WinME Help & Support Center. Help and Support will load as expected using oleaut32.dll 4519 in WinME. After I replaced the file with build 4531 and reloaded WinME and rerun Help and Support Center I get a "cannot display error" message and ME Help and Support Center will not continue on. I switched back to build 4519 and the WinME Help and Support problems went away for good. At least I got to test oleaut32.dll file builds 4519 and 4531 more thoroughly and more broadly, unlike what Tihiy did. so oleaut32.dll file v2.40.4519 to me is the winner - I'll scrap build 4531
  14. and I find Quicktime 7.2 to be somewhat buggy and conflicts with certain programs [yeah, nice going Apple Inc.] I'm dumping QT 7.2 and installing QT Lite (and the K-Lite Codec pack) on my Win2k/XP machines. QT 7.2 for both Mac and PC is flawed
  15. there's always sites like Open Drivers and Driverguide.com to obtain printer drivers for Win9x Oses
  16. Firefox from version 1.0 to version 1.5.0.12 do run under Win95 as I've confirmed this a few months ago.
  17. improving the i810 drivers alone won't be good enough to add more color depth or resolutions. the i810 chipset hardware itself will also have to be modified to also support higher color depths and screen resolutions. Even the XP drivers for i810 hardware only support up to 24bit true color mode
  18. Go with NOD32 if you can afford it. for those who want freeware AV, get Avast or AVG. At least these three antivirus apps still support Win9x OSes unlike the more popular and commercial softwares like Mcafee and Norton which they've dropped 9x support
  19. and the sad part of Apple Quicktime 7.2 is that is requires at least WinXP SP2. Quicktime 7.2 will NOT install under Win2000 as I've tested this on my cousin's Win2000 machine. CURSE YOU, APPLE Inc. why Quicktime 7.2 had to drop Win2k support is beyond me well Rick, that's cold hard reality nowadays for Win9x users anyway I hardly encounter QT files on the web
  20. my sentiments exactly, marxo. Intel GMA 900 series graphics chipsets require a minimum of Win2000; see here: http://www.intel.com/design/graphics/gma900/ not all of the i800 series graphics chips are POS, marxo. The Intel i830 to i865 chips can handle 32bit high color modes perfectly in BOTH 2D and 3D graphics. My brother's XP based laptop uses i852/i855 chips that can use 32bit color mode quite well. I will say the i81x/82x chips are definitely POC since they have inferior color quality options and i830 to i865 chips are much better at handling more colors.
  21. Thank you very much. I will try to reproduce it. I also should check that if there are other CDVSD.VXD versions such as 2225, 2224 etc. I have CDVSD.VXD 4.10.2224 from KB265314. Get it here :Download site Hope this helps weird, I don't have the problem Xeno86 is having on my next door neighbor's Win98 SE computer with cdvsd.vxd 4.10.2226 [this version is from Q274370 and the Q274370 patches are bundled inside the Intel Application Accelerator software). Xeno86 may have bad or outdated firmware for his CD drives. I just hope his own KernelEx software didn't cause the CD problems on his Win98se machines. Q265405 has cdvsd.vxd 4.10.2225 {KB article no longer available from MS support}
  22. sorry, SU182, not going to happen. if that were possible, there would be a bunch of 3rd party drivers that would add more bloat to the SP the_guy, I've found the reason why SU182 wanted so badly to get his device to run under WinME but was unsuccessful. See here: http://help.lockergnome.com/windows2/ENX-2...pict484746.html reading one of Mike's post-- well Mike, SU182 IS out of luck. Sony has not made any WinME drivers for the device SU182 was trying to use and only made XP drivers for it. So, SU182 has no other choice but to use WinXP and install the XP drivers for the device.
  23. well anyways, you should NOT mention anything about RP in this thread in the future, gtrz, as this is already going off topic. from now on post your concerns/problems about RP right here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=58357
  24. I could not find the source, where are they from ? Any idea ? From Windows Server 2003 SP1. DO NOT USE THESE HTML HELP FILES!!! They cause some CHM files not to work correctly under Win98 SE. Just use the HTML Help files from MDGx's unofficial HTML Help package: http://www.mdgx.com/files/HHUPD.EXE Just use version 5.2.3790.309 of the hh.exe, hhsetup.dll, itircl.dll & itss.dll files from KB896358 for Win98 and hhctrl.ocx v5.2.3790.2748 from KB935448. All five of these files are also included in MDGx's Html Help pack and work properly with the CHM files under Win98 SE. I modded this one, Gape. explorer.exe build 1710 is no different from 1700 except for very minor tweaks that I'll keep quiet about. btw - welcome back!
  25. KB936357 update can cause some XP systems to crash with a BSOD on startup. See this page on how to recover from the BSOD after installing KB936357: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=785521 Also look here and determine whether your system with certain cpus really needs the KB936357 patch or not: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=159050#159050Microsoft KB936357 is definitely flawed. I'd stay away from this until MS fixes the problem with it.
