NO, winxpi! I've said this before in old threads concerning hibernation and 98se; You will NEVER get the Hibernation option on your 98se machine UNLESS you are using a LAPTOP computer and the laptop maker has turned on the hibernation feature!!! Hibernation was NOT an OS feature until Win2000, ME, XP and Vista OSes came out and using the ME power management drivers under 98se could put a Win98 SE out of commission for good or make things worse. FORGET IT AND MOVE ON! Many Win98se users don't have a use for the hibernation feature anyway and don't really need it. If you have a real urgent need for the hibernation power management feature, upgrade your operating system to at least Win2000. No, Bobkat. come back in a few months and we'll tell you when a 3.0 beta is ready. From now on, Dblake1, get the latest alpha or beta release of uSP 3.0 for Win98se at MDGx's web site. Good thing MDGx has made it available there.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)

dencorso, if you want the actual Q329128 hotfixes for other 9x systems like 98fe and ME you could try phoning Microsoft support for them since they may not offer them by email. Give MS a call and see what you can get from them. Tips on how to call Microsoft support mentioned here: http://jasonpearce.com/blog/2006/06/26/how...crosoft-hotfix/ -
You may want to consider switching to Win98 SE. I have given up use of WinME in the summer due to lack of the user*.* 891711 fix for WinME and upgraded to WinXP. And I've also switched the OS on my aunt's computer from WinME to Win2000. This is one of the reasons why I no longer use WinME and have switched to XP. hope the Anonymous author understands my disappointment and doesn't mind me switching from ME to XP.

Yes. No. It still stores our files fine. They have no place at all on a home computer. They belong on business computers where there is an administration/support team, and users. My sentiments exactly! NT 4.0 was targeted FOR business users AND makes a LOUSY OS for the consumers/home users. 9X OSes were tailor made for consumers and home users. So you can't please everyone with a "one size fits all" OS! And some more things about NT4: LACK of TRUE Plug and Play code [notice I used the word "TRUE"] and NO Add New Hardware Wizard to help ease the installation of hardware. If you want to setup hardware under NT4, you'll have to do it the old fashion way, install the drivers and run the setup program to configure system resources like IRQs, I/O address, etc. I'd prefer the Add New Hardware Wizard and Plug & Play anyday to simplify things. And setting up different types of hardware under NT 4.0 is also gonna make some people's blood pressure rise! If you want to setup a video card under NT4, use Display control panel app To setup sound cards, joysticks, or other multimedia stuff use the MultiMedia control panel app For setting up modems, use the Modem control panel app For setting up SCSI or IDE hardware use SCSI Devices app man, do we have to go all over the place to setup different kinds of hardware under NT4? Also, setting up and installing the actual NT4 OS itself is more challenging than installing 9xME OSes. First time I had to setup NT4, I was forced to create three NT4 setup disks and have to boot with the NT4 setup disks to continue setup. AND when it comes to multitasking, 9x OSes rule since 9x OSes use less system resources than NT4 and I can switch between programs easily and quickly with ANY 9x OS. Oh NT4 has some DirectX support. Only DX 3.0a included in NT4 SP3-SP6. When Windows NT 4.0 was first released, it was unstable and almost unusable. It took Microsoft at least THREE service packs to fix most of the major problems with NT4 and make it right. MS released NT4 SP3 NINE MONTHS after NT4 was released. At least many of the weaknesses of NT4 were fixed in NT5 (Win2000). -End of Story-

sorry, galahs. WMP9 does NOT work at all under Win95. tried the registry hacks myself a few months ago on a 95 machine and got some cryptic error messages during WMP9 setup. WMP9 is totally incompatible with 95. It sure kinda sucks for Winamp 5.5x to kill 9X support. I still like using that old CDPLAYER.EXE app in Win98. The WinME version of CDPLAYER.EXE launches Windows Media Player 7.x or 9.x.

Where can I find Windows Movie Maker (ME Version) for Windows 98
erpdude8 replied to computerwizkid's topic in Windows 9x/ME
NO, computerwizkid. Windows Movie Maker 2.x requires XP and WMM2 is already included in XP SP2 and the WMM2 files are dependent on some XP system files. so forget about it and consider buying third party video editing software instead. -
Please be careful when installing KB936357 V2 for XP SP2. The original KB936357 patch for XP SP2 caused XP machines to be UNBOOTABLE, crashing with a BSOD at startup with certain CPUs. Not sure if KB936357 V2 is reliable enough now that MS article 936357 acknowledges that the patch is NOT supported on machines with Intel Family 5 (perhaps pentium 3) and older CPUs. See this article here. I'm not letting ANY of my XP and Vista computers touch KB936357, following the advice of a certain Windows critic to avoid KB936357. period! nuff said. -erpdude

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
not just buggy, blackwire. Usp10.dll version 1.0626.5756.0 from Vista is more likely incompatible with Win9x/ME/NT4 OSes and users should revert to using v1.04x of usp10.dll sure thing, the_guy. I've uploaded the revised unofficial WMP9 URPs for Win98se/ME and Win2k at the Usaupload site; email me for the links but I'm only going to keep the URPs up at USAUpload until this Friday. Hopefully MDGx has gotten my message last week about the updated WMP9 URPs and has gotten them. -
No. it's simple as that.

and I totally agree on using a "fixed" size swap file to minimize performance loss, though I'd set it to the amount of physical RAM installed (1.7Gb) if you run very large programs. just be sure you have a large enough hard drive to hold the fixed size page file. If you already have a superfast PC, eidenk, then ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 is not really needed, especially if you use a superfast hard drive with very high RPM

S.O.S. Internet Explorer 7.0 soon Required? S.O.S.

and you may want to direct your complaints to the creator of the site that has the "bad" scripts -
If you are using a firewall or DSL/cable internet connection, Passive FTP should be enabled you may also want to check your firewall settings if you installed a firewall and enable inbound and outbound FTP connections with your firewall program
-
The "Enable FTP folder view" needs to be disabled from the Internet Options control panel app. This option whether enabled or disabled should work correctly with Win98 + IE 5.x. For Win98 + IE6.x, this option does not work correctly. Those using IE6 under Win98/ME/NT4 should look for the MSIEFTP.DLL file in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder and rename or delete that file to disable FTP Folder View and retry the FTP site in IE.

NT 4.0 uses NTFS4, while 2000 and XP use NTFS5. NT4 can use NTFS5 if you install NT4 Service pack 4 or later. that's a fact. 888 should get over this thread and move on with his life. he's not going to win an argument with Benoitren and other 9x defenders. NT OSes are MORE memory and cpu intensive than 9x OSes. I've used both 9x and NT based systems to back my claim. I will say that NT OSes crash LESS than 9x OSes (when installing the appropriate patches) also lacking in NT4 was built in power management (hey, at least I like using power management provided by Windows OSes like Win95/98/2k/XP/Vista). If I wanted to use an NT-based OS on a laptop I better get at least Win2k and avoid NT4.

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
try using an older version of the usp10.dll file, bristols. And store a copy of the usp10.dll in the Miranda program's folder to ensure full compatibility. the updated riched9x.exe patch installs the usp10.dll file featured from WinServ2003 SP2. Note to MDGx: The Exception Error Cmapieng.vxd fix for WinME is no longer available from the NAI web site. MS article 275003 still mentions the "broken" download link but I have removed references to the cmapieng.vxd patch from my Win98/ME updates page. also, I have revised the unofficial WMP9 update rollup pack for Win98se/ME and made an unofficial WMP9 update rollup pack for Win2k; both include the recent wmp.dll ms07-047 security fix. Let me know if you need them. -
Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I was supposed to release v2.4.0 of the english 98fe SP on Halloween but I'm postponing it until MDGx creates unofficial DST 943000 update for Win9xME. I'm removing the user*.* 4.10.2003 files from the 98fe SP and reverting back to putting the kb891711.exe and q891711.dll files and the user*.* 4.10.2001 files due to software conflicts with Tihiy's RP pack. -
Q265405 was pulled after Q274370 was made. BTW - Beta 9 of the ME service pack is ready (which the_guy should have mentioned) and is posted at MDGx's web site. and thanks for the info about the recall of Q329128, fastlanephil

so will there be a Lite version of Acrobat Reader 8.1.1 coming soon? hopefully Mr. Shark can find a way to provide it.
-
Forget it, Tihiy. KB934602 is another hotfix that has been "shortlived" and is no longer available from MS support anymore. I've tried requesting KB934602 myself a few weeks ago and MS doesn't have it anymore as what I've been told. Consider using KB930828 which should be mentioned at MDGx's web site.

Service pack for Windows 98 Standard (First, Gold)
erpdude8 replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
MS article Q230791 has been removed from MS support site, ditto with the Q230791 hotfix. I won't bother retrying my requests for hotfixes Q254087, Q265528 & Q329128. I'll assume MS support scrapped these fixes for good, even though their KB articles are still posted. -
also, the_guy, the DST reg entries from intl.inf of unofficial WinME SP beta 8 messed things up under WinME, unexpectedly changing the current Time Zone from US to Casablanca (OH NOOOO!!) consider replacing it with MDGx's unofficial Q933360.exe fix. Just install Q933360 silently (I have it named DSTUPD.EXE in my unofficial packs) as in the latest releases of my unofficial 98fe SP and my unpublicized unofficial Win95 OSR2 Update Rollup. unfortunately, the Q329128 hotfixes for Win98/ME are no longer available AT ALL anymore from MS support, dencorso. MS pulled these fixes from their hotfix server several years ago and won't post them back up. Q329128 is one that is "shortlived", perhaps available for a very brief time and then MS decided to recall it. So you can forget about Q329128 altogether. same thing with Q296773. tried to request that a few years ago but it's no longer available from MS support. luckily, I found Q296773 inside a Dell OS update pack for certain Dell laptops. Also MS article 296773 has been removed from the MS support site.

Version 5.40.11.2220 of riched20.dll is featured in the Office XP post-SP3 MS07-013 security update. Version 5.30.23.1221 of riched20.dll is prone to security flaws mentioned in security bulletin MS07-013. Replace it with version 5.30.23.1227 which I have for my Office 2000 suite. 98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
I may consider dropping the user.exe/user32.dll v4.10.2003 files from the next release of the unofficial Win98 FE SP since it can cause problems with Tihiy's RP pack. And I'll restore the kb891711.exe & q8917111.dll files as well. Where the heck did you get v1.0471.4030.0 of the usp10.dll file, Drugwash? That's what I'm more worried about.
