  1. But you cannot as well say that. It may well be an intermittent problem. You will need anyway to check the hard disk. jaclaz P.S.: You should also check your keyboard, your "!" and "?" keys appear to get stuck... it definitely is an intermittent problem with the hard drive, jaclaz. Here's the specific "unmountable boot volume message" I got on my brother's XP laptop: Stop 0x000000ED (0x85B3BB20 0xC000009C 0x00000000 0x00000000) Notice the second "parameter" of the stop error is "0xC000009C" which seem to indicate a "bad block" or bad cluster/bad sector [do a Google search on 0xC000009C and you can find more info about that] I couldn't reach the XP Recovery Console, even if I booted from either the XP Setup Boot Floppies or the XP CD as I would get a different blue screen error message telling me to run CHKDSK /F or CHKDSK /R to fix the problems, but I couldn't access CHKDSK because the blue screen message appears before I get the chance. But now I got it resolved by loading the Spinrite 6.0 boot disk on the laptop with the faulty hard drive and Spinrite found a bunch of bad clusters and recovered crucial data, even though it took many hours to fix. The "unmountable boot volume" message never appeared again after the XP OS was reloaded. In short, Spinrite saved our butts this time. I suggest buying a copy though it might be a little expensive. Use it on a different machine with a working HD to create a Spinrite boot floppy disk or Spinrite boot CD and load either one into your computer with the faulty hard drive. Spinrite is far better than using CHKDSK or SCANDISK and not only detects bad clusters better than CHKDSK/SCANDISK but also can recover data from those flawed sectors.
  2. Looks like Dell and Gateway are releasing more IDT/Sigmatel audio driver packages. I no longer need the R167846 nor the R171788 packages anymore. Dell posted R171786.exe on June 13, 2008 which includes Sigmatel HD Audio driver 6.10.0.5614 from R171788 and the Array Mic driver from R167846. So the R171786 package replaces/supersedes R171788 & R167846. Worked great on my mom's Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop. Gateway has posted D20184-006-001.exe on June 3, 2008 which has Sigmatel HD Audio driver v6.10.5580.0. Drivers are older than some of the new ones that Gateway posted a few months ago. strange. But this is for some Gateway notebook computers and may not work on the Gateway FX-510S computer. keep 'em coming Dell/Gateway/HP/Sony
  3. Unofficial Windows98 FE Service Pack 2.51- no longer available Changes: -updated MSVBVM60.DLL file to v6.0.98.02 from WinXP SP3 final -updated EXTRAC32.EXE file to v5.10.2600.5512 from WinXP SP3 final -updated DSTUPD.EXE with recent TZ changes -updated OLEAUT32.DLL to v2.40.4520.0 FROM KB946235 -added more True Type fonts and updated several True Type Fonts from WinXP SP3 -updated HTML32.CNV, MSCONV97.DLL & MSWRD832.CNV files from Office 2003 SP3
  4. There are some files listed in the SPUNINST.INF file of the unofficial ME SP that should not be on there and prompts for certain files that are non-existent in the precopy.cab file. It's an "uninstall" problem of the ME SP that can be fixed easily by making the proper changes to the SPUNINST.INF file. It looks like the Unofficial ME Service Pack project is on Stand By until the_guy can make any new comments here.
  5. thanks a lot dencorso. I needed to test out the vnetbios.vxd 4.90.3001 file under Win98 FE & SE.
  6. a few of us have also experienced the "unmountable boot volume" blue screen error message as noted here: http://www.msfn.org/board/Unmountable-boot...me-t118813.html
  7. Three possibilities for desktop "845GV" motherboards, divine_islet: Intel® Desktop Board D845GVAD2 Intel® Desktop Board D845GVFN Intel® Desktop Board D845GVSR The D845GVFN & D845GVSR boards use Realtek AC97 audio drivers while the D845GVAD2 board uses Intel AC97 audio drivers. Intel Integrated Audio Driver [5.10.3686] for WinXP (Intel D845GVAD2 board only): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...on〈=eng Realtek AC97 Audio driver [5.10.0.6020] for WinXP (Intel D845GVFN & D845GVSR boards): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...on〈=eng please try any of the audio drivers I've mentioned. If one of them doesn't work, then use the other one.
  8. I'm also having the same exact problem as wildbill411. I'm starting to get the Unmountable_boot_volume BSOD message on my brother's mitac 8080 notebook computer everytime XP boots. Looks like the hard drive on there is almost dead. One might try Partition Table Doctor to repair/recover an "unmountable" hard drive partition: http://www.ptdd.com/
  9. I sent MDGx a PM yesterday in this regard... but he has not been around since May 17... I suspect MDGx is away on holiday... ok, tested downloading some stuff from MDGx's web site. most of them worked. however, "Unofficial Windows 98 SE Networking Errors VNETBIOS.VXD 4.90.3001 Fix" link is not working; get 404 File Not Found error message. looks like this patch has been removed from his web site. And I have uploaded the Unofficial Windows Media Player 9.0 (WMP9) Update Rollup Packs (URP) for Windows 98, 2000 & ME [June 2008 Releases] here: http://www.usaupload.net/d/91td72ov7a0 I've fixed a major installation problem with the Unofficial WMP9 URP pack for Win98/ME and updated the WMP9 files to the ones from XP SP3 in both WMP9 URP packs for Win98/ME and Win2000. these are newer than the ones posted at MDGx's WMP page.
  10. doesn't bother me. if you're bothered by it, ignore my future posts and move on with your life, Benoit-dude! starting to get on my nerves Looks like Mozilla is just about ready to release the final version of Firefox 3 on June 17: http://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/index...17th-firefox-3/
  11. You can try out the latest Opera 9.5x beta builds here: http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/
  12. why do you guys need that bloated crappy Adobe Reader 8.1? you need Win2000 or better to use that, so forget using that bloated Adobe app under Win98 and each major version of Adobe Reader is starting to get more bloated and require newer versions of Windows and MSI Windows Installer 3.x will NEVER work under Win98, even with KernelEx Consider using either Sumatra PDF or FoxIt Reader to view PDF files. These lightweight PDF programs work under Win98/ME and take up much less disk space & use less memory.
  13. Firefox 3.0 Release Candidate 2 now available: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html getting warmer...
  14. Maybe mdgx or any of the other W9x/Me gurus can comment/confirm? jaclaz what about Win98 FE? That Steven guy did not mention Win98 first edition on his page and did not make an IO.SYS patch for Win98 FE. anyway, I've figured out how to patch the IO.SYS file under Win98 FE thanks to the changes mentioned in his page.
  15. Latest version of HTML32.CNV seems to be 2003.1100.8165 from KB923618 Office 2003 SP3 for MSCONV97.DLL & MSWRD832.CNV it's version 2003.1100.8166 from KB923618 Office 2003 SP3. MDGx may also want to obtain those three files and the updated graphics filter files from Office 2003 SP3 (KB923618). Use the MSIX - Patch Files Extractor app to extract the files from the Mainsp3.MSP file of KB923618. Also can anyone attempt to download EXE files that are posted directly from MDGx's web site? Right now I seem to be getting "403 Forbidden" error messages when attempting to download any EXE files posted on his web site.
  16. wow lexonex. thanks. You may want to download and run the AUD_allOS_5790.3x_5713.7v_PV_IDTGUI_v83.exe file from Intel's web site which has version 6.10.5713.7 of the IDT/Sigmatel Audio drivers released May 22, 2008. Fully compatible with your IDT hardware ID "7682" as I've checked myself. IDT fixed the version number "blunder" in this new IDT 92xx audio package from Intel. Now includes the IDT Audio control panel program. I won't let this topic die until IDT releases more new IDT/Sigmatel audio drivers made in 2008 to computer manufacturers like Dell/Gateway/HP/Sony and that Vista users can obtain SP1 through Windows Update with the latest available IDT/Sigmatel audio drivers installed on their machines.
  17. and you did, lexonex. Before May 13, the IDT HD Audio Codec 1.0.5713.6 Vista driver was still available from Windows Update since late April. Once May 13th came, Windows Update/Microsoft Update stopped offering it and a lot of angry Dell users who use IDT/Sigmatel audio on their systems lost their sound after installing the IDT HD Audio Codec from Windows Update. They had to use Vista's "roll-back" driver feature to restore the working IDT/Sigmatel audio drivers on their Dell computers. I've found new IDT/Sigmatel HD Audio drivers but these are for Hewlett-Packard laptops only. sp39330.exe [iDT ID92HD71B7 Audio Driver version 6.10.5929.0 released 5-6-2008]
  18. or upgrade to Vista Service Pack 1, which has a "bug fixed" edition of Media Player 11 (version 11.0.6001.7000). some of the problems I had with WMP 11 were fixed in Vista SP1.
  19. Can you tell me the direct download link to the IDT HD Audio Codec 1.0.5713.6 Vista driver from Windows Update, lexonex? The actual download location is recorded in the WindowsUpdate.Log file from the C:\Windows\ folder when Windows Update downloads the IDT driver. It begins something like http://www.download.windowsupdate.com And the driver package is a CAB file. 20. Firefox 3.0 Release Candidate 1 now available: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html getting real close to the final product.
  21. at least...not in the full version of the service pack. I may have plans to develop two editions of the SP, one full and one lite. Media Player 6.1 will most likely be included in the "lite" edition of the osr2 service pack while the "full" edition will have Media Player 6.4. planned schedule for upcoming releases of the unofficial osr2 service pack [you guys can figure this out]: -beta releases - middle/late summer 2008 (like mid-July to late September) -RC releases - fall 2008 (like from early October to early December) -final release - end of 2008 or start of 2009
  22. unfortunately, lexonex, it may be removed from Windows Update also. Some Vista users who have tried the IDT HD Audio Vista driver 1.0.5713.6 on some Dell computers (not Gateway computers) from Windows Update had their audio hardware disabled w/ no sound [ouch!]. It looks like the driver you got from Windows Update is for your Gateway machine and not for other name brand computers such as Dell/HP/Sony. Please note, those drivers are NOT generic. IDT is so reluctant to make generic audio drivers and since IDT doesn't want to provide Vista "end users" with any updated drivers, they suggest getting them from PC Manufacturers like Dell/Gateway/HP/Sony/Toshiba which make things pretty challenging for Vista users to find new drivers. Read here, lexonex: http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums...thread.id=83043 quote from DSL_Steve: When he says "MS Update" he means Microsoft Update/Windows Update. And Microsoft Update Catalog is for everyone, including home users. I'm a home user too and I sometimes use Microsoft Update Catalog to search for and download some drivers. You can also find version 1.0.5713.6 of the IDT 92XX Vista Audio Drivers from the AUD_allOS_5762x_5713.6v_PV_IDTGUI_v68.exe file: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...32〈=eng Dell has just released a new Sigmatel HD Audio Driver for Dell Optiplex 740 and perhaps other Dell desktop computers (maybe even the Dimension E520 machine PeaceByJesus is using). Get the SIGMATEL_STAC-92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe file to update the Sigmatel HD Audio drivers to version 6.10.5866. Note that the SIGMATEL_STAC-92XX-C-Major-H_A06_R182475.exe file is for Dell desktop computers and will not work for Dell laptops and non-Dell computers such as Gateway/HP/Sony/Toshiba.
  23. yea, I'm scratching my head on this one, kiyotaka. your existing XP Home OEM key should work with slipstreamed SP3. not sure why it didn't. I have two XP Home CDs, one XP Home upgrade (retail) and the other XP Home SP1 (OEM). the existng product key from the old XP Home Retail upgrade CD now Slipstreamed with SP3 still worked on one of my XP machines. I'll try slipstreaming SP3 on the XP Home SP1 (OEM) cd later today to see if the product key on there still works on my brother's XP laptop.
  24. hey zedox. is your XP disc a "retail" or "OEM"? my "slipstreamed" XP SP3 Home Edition retail upgrade CD I made worked. the existing product key I have still works.
  25. whenever the NTLDR missing error message occurs, it could be the boot sector is messed up or the boot.ini file is messed up. Doing a "repair" install of WinXP seems to fix some NTLDR missing errors.
