  1. Hi guys, I am resurrecting my old box with 98SE on it. I have had this computer operating successfully with puppy linux and the wifi was able to connect to my network after ndiswrapper used the same driver. When I installed the zd1211 wireless driver from http://www.zydas.com.tw/web_driver/ZD1211_USB/Windows/ZD1211USB_Install_4_13_0_0_ALL.zip the computer saw my wireless card successfully, but the packaged wireless tool (ZDWlan) seems to load but then closes for no reason. Does anyone know of a replacement wifi program for 98 se?

  3. I should add that my computer has been thoroughly checked for viruses etc.
  4. ok.. yesterday morning I booted up as usual to find that Vista(home premium SP2) wouldn't load. went to system repair ..it tried to repair but couldn't repair the problem. next went to system restore.. the most recent good boot wouldn't work, so as a fluke I tried yet another earlier restore point and found that one from 4 days ago allowed the system to boot. Once booted I ran SFC/SCANNOW it found corrupt files but was unable to fix them it referred me to the CBSlog file which i attempted to read , but it's above my intelligence level. I am posting the log file in hopes of determining a cau
  5. There's a quick way you can enable or disable this annoying UAC 'feature' from the command line: Disable UAC C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Enable UAC C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f After you enable or disable UAC, you will have to reboot your computer for the changes to take effect.
  6. Steve Balmer gets 'egged' by Vista hating student http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=cf4_1211216723 maybe is too kind? Maybe he should be forced to use Vista 10 hours a day for 1 year.
  7. You probably know by now , that Windows Media Player 11 has lots of bugs that cannot be resolved by doing a system restore. You must begin anew at the 'factory original software point', to fix anything meaningful with the player. there is another way HERES THE FIX TO UNINSTALL WMP11 You have to delete the registry key in local machine....regedit, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then got to software. look for Microsoft, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer.............. DELETE THE WHOLE REGISTRY KEY FOLDER then reboot, it should ask if you want to reinstall it. That's it. It's s
  8. type in 'run box' eventvwr.msc event viewer. It's nice they are so good at keeping track of what goes wrong. hmmm
  9. Another command for checking system files (from command prompt) sfc /scannow

  11. To better utilize the bandwidth of TCP connections in Vista, the Next Generation TCP/IP stack includes Compound TCP (CTCP). CTCP more aggressively increases the send window for connections with large receive window sizes and BDPs. CTCP attempts to maximize throughput on these types of connections by monitoring delay variations and losses. In addition, CTCP ensures that its behavior does not negatively impact other TCP connections. In testing performed internally at Microsoft, large file backup times were reduced by almost half for a 1Gbps connection with a 50ms RTT. Connections with a larg
  12. a new contender: DEFRAGGLER http://www.defraggler.com/ from the people that make CCleaner. it's FREE imho as good if not better than O&O faster , more features - like the option to defrag 'free space' and to defrag just individual files. Works on Win2000 and up
  13. It might be possible, but I would not recommend it. You should do clean install, and you should convert your partitions to NTFS. Cheers Cool. Thats what I was hoping. Thanks
  14. I use it for regular internet surfing - light to medium use. It's 7 years old now and starting to 'get cranky'. It's also getting harder to find 98se compatible software. My concern is that the box is too old and not enough memory to run XP efficiently. Is this correct? Perhaps I'm better off buying a new computer (always ) Can XP install on top of 98se? or would I just be asking for problems?
