What exactly do you mean by aligning the partitions? You aligned them by cylinder, by MB or is it something else? And... why did you do it in the first place? It's better not to do such dangerous things without a serious reason.

I think that at the time that Windows 98 were released there wasn't even the idea of a language pack...

Alternatively you can disable the five scheduled tasks that are included in the Task Scheduler>Windows>Setup folder, it will totally do the job.

For monitoring traffic: NetBalancer (free for monitoring traffic, just a prompt to activate when you open it after the trial period expires). You can see which application communicates with whom, when and how much it uploads/downloads (with Windows 10 we reached the spot where the uploading is more suspicious than the downloading...).

Just don't trust any Microsoft's product from 2015 and afterwards.

A simpler method (ESET independent) is to find the Microsoft patch for this vulnerability (KB4012598) and install it. If you have done it you are protected, if you haven't you are not.

Don't these computers have a restore partition (with the original OS of course)? In the case of Windows 10 someone said that they stop access to the restore partition but it is still there (so you must be able to find and use it somehow). If the PC is from 2012 then it had probably Windows 8 originally installed.

Use Windows 8 fully updated (until the last January 2016 updates) or Windows 8.1 Update 1 with no other updates (except if you have the courage to check if they are related to telemetry and download one by one the past standalone updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog, you can do the same for Windows 8 and the updates for Windows Server 2012 - I don't know if there are any telemetry updates included in this case).

Yes, the updated ones (Windows 8 isn't so updated ). Without the "telemetry" stuff they do communicate with Microsoft's servers but in a rather innocent way (no spying/data files tracking).

O&O Shutup 10 is surely a good program and does a good job but never trust Windows 10 (would you trust a criminal just because he is in prison)?
