Running Windows XP Sp3/4 on off the shelf computers?
HarryTri replied to Roffen's topic in Windows XP
I had a look into XP Mode myself some time ago and I have the impression that it is installable right away on the appropriate versions of Windows 7 - no need for Virtual PC. -
XP Pro 32bit on X99 with 16GB of Ram, only 912MB of RAM available, why?
HarryTri replied to ruthan's topic in Windows XP
There must be a mistake here. Also how much memory does the Windows XP detect totally? -
A simpler method (ESET independent) is to find the Microsoft patch for this vulnerability (KB4012598) and install it. If you have done it you are protected, if you haven't you are not.

Well, the question is why it says only 3.5 GB instead of 7.5 (maybe it can't say more for some reason - a kind of 4 GB limit?).

GDI+ is a Microsoft graphics api.

Yes but there is always a way to access and use it in order to restore your computer to the factory settings (varying from vendor to vendor).
-
It may sound silly, but maybe Windows 7 consumes more power and the battery is inadequate for it? Did this thing always happened with this laptop since it had Windows 7 installed or it started happening recently? Also is the battery installed properly in Windows 7?
-
I think that I am reffering to what you call "partition for the recovery image".
-
Don't these computers have a restore partition (with the original OS of course)? In the case of Windows 10 someone said that they stop access to the restore partition but it is still there (so you must be able to find and use it somehow). If the PC is from 2012 then it had probably Windows 8 originally installed.

I have read so but don't remember where, you can find something in Google (e.g. search for "SSDs trim necessary").
-
As far as I know modern SSDs manage this issue by themselves and don't need any external "trimming".

Avast's Firewall is blocking the access to my printer (wi-fi)
HarryTri replied to ctthuhuong's topic in Windows 7
Maybe you must add the printer's Wi-Fi to the trusted networks of Avast (I speculate it must have something like that)? -
There is a patch for the WannaCry issue for Windows 8 (even for Windows XP!) even if it isn't offered by Windows Update (not to me at least): KB4012598 (This is for 64 bit Windows, for 32 bit Windows just change the id number in the URL from 55249 to 55246).

Even if it exists Microsoft can always add more...

NVDIA telemetry is probably innocent (performance data) but Windows 10 telemetry surely isn't.
-
Use Windows 8 fully updated (until the last January 2016 updates) or Windows 8.1 Update 1 with no other updates (except if you have the courage to check if they are related to telemetry and download one by one the past standalone updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog, you can do the same for Windows 8 and the updates for Windows Server 2012 - I don't know if there are any telemetry updates included in this case).

Repacking Updates so I can have a turd free experience.
HarryTri replied to NsaFarm's topic in Windows 10
Yes, the updated ones (Windows 8 isn't so updated ). Without the "telemetry" stuff they do communicate with Microsoft's servers but in a rather innocent way (no spying/data files tracking). -

O&O Shutup 10 is surely a good program and does a good job but never trust Windows 10 (would you trust a criminal just because he is in prison)? -
If they depend on registry entries to work you can find and backup them and reimport them to registry in such an occasion. Also check if there are related folders in the Program Data folder (note however that they won't appear in the installed programs and you will have to uninstall them manually if you want to).

I had the impression that IE 11 is supported on Windows 8 too. Supported on Windows 7 and not on Windows 8? Not anymore perhaps but I have stored the last version of IE 11 supported on Windows 8 (even if I don't use it at the moment) from Microsoft's site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17621/internet-explorer-downloads Now it says that IE 11 is not supported on Windows 8 but this is the page from where I downloaded IE 11 some time ago. Now that I check it the file that I downloaded has the same name with the one for Windows 7 and it is version 11.0.0.7, so if you find version 11.0.0.7 for Windows 7 it must work on Windows 8 too. (You may say that the version reported in the file details has one more zero; I suppose 11.0.0.7 and 11.0.7 is the same).

I use IE 10 on Windows 8 and I have never seen this tab.

The GWX related telemetry is rather innocent (compatibility stuff) but updated Windows 7 and 8.1 have the same telemetry with Windows 10 (not at all innocent of course). Only Windows 8 are unaffected (in the base of their official updates that Windows Update offers) due to the premature ceasing of support for them. Support was a good thing BGR (before Gates retired), AGR (after Gates retired) isn't trustworthy anymore (and so isn't Microsoft in general).
-
I'm not enthusiastic about Windows 10 but everything in this life can be changed or tolerated. Windows 10 are still Windows and you can do your job with them. The real problem is "telemetry", we must not forget it in favor of minor issues. That's my point of view at least and the reason I'll avoid to use Windows 10 as much as possible.

Do you know the paragraph sign in Word's toolbar? If you click on it, it will show all the invisible stuff (paragraph changing marks, line changing marks etc.). Check if there is something different in the area with the O's. As for the second page, it must exist in Word filled only with spaces. Find it, put the cursor as down and right as it goes, and press the Del button until the whole page extincts.
