  1. I have a problem reading through extended topics to say the truth (which explains that you don't usually see posts from me in them). Anyway since Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have the same requirements for SSE2, PAE end NX as far as I know I wonder what these security components are (you can give me a link to the exact post that they are mentioned if you prefer so).
  2. The processor requirements are the same for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, JodyT as far as I know still uses Windows 8 because he prefers them than Windows 8.1 (as I do).
  3. I see. Well, I have had two HP inkjet printers until now, the Deskjet D3550 until it broke (a model-specific defective component as I have been told by a guy who sells these things) and the Deskjet 4360 that I still have. No problem with installation, I even managed to find in the HP site drivers for Windows 8/8.1 and install the second on Windows 8 when my Pentium III old Windows XP desktop bit the dust recently. Printing quality, speed etc. - no problem. Yet I had a weird problem with the D4360 one. I may still have it, I don't know, I surely had it on my old system (with USB 1 ports only - maybe it played some role?). It would - almost - always cut the photos! A large blank - white in fact - area and then the part of the photo or photos that fitted in the rest of the paper. I had to print four photos on an A4 size photo paper in order to have the two of them printed complete. I made some tests and it was the photo paper - any photo paper. If I printed the photos on common paper or on the wrong side of the photo paper it was alright, if I printed them on the glossy side of the photo paper it did it! It has the option to provide info about the paper you use before you print but this made no difference. Have you ever seen anything like that?
  4. jaclaz, I don't know how much right you are but you really gave me a good laugh.
  5. No Telemetry updates basically, this is the most important. Let me add some stuff: - Compatibility mode for Oses older than Windows Vista - Windows Experience Index - GUI option not only to make backups of your system but also to restore from them (though I use Macrium Reflect Free for this job) - No Libraries in the My Computer folder - Option to monitor the network traffic amount in Charms>Networks - Other details that make Windows 8 feel more complete aesthetically and functionally than Windows 8.1 Not to mention the countless bugs of Windows 8.1 that were corrected with Update 1. I think that Windows 8.1 was in fact a hasty and nervous release in anticipation to the reactions against Windows 8. That's my opinion at least.
  6. The two basic things that I don't like in Windows 10 is the spying by Microsoft itself and the updating system that constantly changes the OS to something "new", different from what you bought and adopted (if you did). As for the best Microsoft Windows OS I vote for Windows 8, anyway Windows 8 and 8.1 are not so much different (the biggest difference is that Windows 8.1 is still "supported" by Microsoft, I don't know if this is a good thing anymore).
  7. Good work! But you had the source code available if I understand correctly? Is Format Factory an open source program? Sorry if I ask to much!
  8. Very good, but with what you replaced them? Also the given link gives the following error:
  9. In fact this was said to be the case with Windows 10 even by Microsoft itself as far as I remember, maybe something has changed from a point of time?
  10. If it isn't clear after the 14 days trial period you can't set priorities/rules/filters but you can go on using the program for monitoring purposes absolutely free (you receive of course a prompt to upgrade when you open the main window but that's all). Have a look here also: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/43713/how-to-monitor-the-bandwidth-consumption-of-individual-applications The program doesn't allow you to set priorities after the trial period anymore but it has "Total" and "Top" tabs added in its later versions:
  11. Wireshark (I don't know about the other two) is very good at capturing and analyzing PPP packets but does it monitor the network traffic as a whole?
  12. It seems there is no much interest on this subject, anyway if somebody is interested he/she can try this free (it has a 14 days trial period for the not-monitoring options) program and post his opinion about it or suggest an alternative one if he/she wants.
  13. https://netbalancer.com In the days of Windows 10, the first Windows Spyware OS version, in addition to tools like O&O Shutup Windows 10, there is this tool that allows you monitor your network traffic. In its paid version it also allows setting priorities, rules and filters for the network traffic but its monitoring capabilities are free. With it you can: - check in real time which applications are connected to internet and to which IPs each one of them - check the total traffic per minute/hour/day (you choose) and which applications contributed to it with their individual download/upload sum - check the 20 or more (you choose) top applications/IPs/countries/protocols that shared your network traffic e.g. today It is a good way to know what's going up and down through your internet connection and check if your anti-windows 10-spyware measures are efficient. I found it recently and I use it although I don't have Windows 10 (so I can know that my Windows 8 aren't too chatty - thanks God).
  14. Thanks for the tutorial, I may consider trying it. (Not that I'm going to stick with Windows 10 anyway, also I don't like the linking to my Microsoft account part, I prefer Microsoft not to know this link).
  15. I don't quiet understand. Is it a "boot from a VHD" kind of thing and if yes how exactly you can do it? I noticed it afterwards. You mean installing Windows 10 to a real drive and not a VHD within e.g. Virtual Box? Can you do it with a partition and will Windows 10 be restrained into that partition (and not delete other partitions - Windows 7/8, recovery etc.)?
  16. Or run the older OS in a VM. Anyway I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 10 even if they paid me the $120 it is said that it will cost to upgrade to it after the 29th of July, but one day I may have to buy a new PC with Windows 10 installed on it... (probably because my current one will be broken). I'll do what I can with the new OS once again (Windows 8 by the way are not so horrible, you just have to replace the missing Start Menu, even the Start Screen isn't that bad - not as good as the Start Menu of course either - and you can skip it when logging in if you want).
  17. No, I put things in the cart and when I open it it is empty! Maybe it detects that the updates aren't meant for my OS? I lowered the security settings of IE 10 to the lowest level but it made no difference.
  18. There is of course the free VMware Player and the also free Virtual Box too.
  19. I found the Windows Server 2012 updates on the Microsoft Update Catalog page, I picked Cumulative Security Update for IE 10 (KB3170106) and Security Update for Adobe Flash Player (KB3174060), it was impossible to add them to the cart so I had to find them from other places in order to download them. I didn't mess with the rest of the updates, they are so many and it would be very helpful if there was a registry hack like the one for Windows XP and Windows POSready 2009 updates so that we could do the job with Windows Update. The Security Update for Adobe Flash Player must be the same with the one for Windows Embedded, it causes the same problem anyway: IE 10 hangs on several web pages and I had to disable the Shockwave Flash Object add-on (Flash.ocx) in order to make it work properly. Of course Flash Player is disabled in this way, I can of course enable it when needed, anyway let's hope that the August's update will fix this.
  20. Thanks for the information. The strange thing is that this update came to me from Windows Update, I didn't even know that there is such thing like Windows 8 Embeded. Well, I just hid it and I'll see what I'll do with the updates issue.
  21. How do you know which ones are for Windows 8? You just install them or you have to use any tricks?
  22. Strange, I don't know if we really talk about the same program but Macrium Reflect's imaging and restoring feature have worked for me flawlessly until now. Commands? Why don't you use the GUI?
  23. "Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows Embedded 8 Standard for x64 systems (KB3174060)" It came along with Windows Malware Removal Tool this patch Tuesday on my Windows 8. I had to uninstall it because it made IE10 almost unusable but... Windows Embedded 8 Standard? From when are they around and can somebody port their updates to Windows 8 as the Windows POSready 2009 ones to Windows XP (although the mentioned update makes me hesitating to do it anyway)?
  24. I suppose you mean Macrium Reflect Free (in which I trust).
