  1. What he heck does that first line mean? I simply asked a question. I don't have time to go through pages of a thread, just to ask a simple question, so sorry about being "superficial". My lord! EDIT: (and yes I saw the smilies, but I abhore the tone of your comment. I don't need to concern myself with differences between source code and "versions". Pale Moon v29 was apparently a milestone release, and I checked the last builds that Roytam1 submitted. I never saw any 29x issues, so I asked. That's NOT spreading misinformation, and I look upon any inference in the slightest to that with major disdain.
  2. Just curious. Are you guys moving at to any of the new 29x releases? Can this be recompiled for XP/Vista compatibility?
  3. You should (in my mind) leave your original post intact, because now our responses make less sense for someone else stumbling across this in the future.
  4. Well it could be a number of things: Vista had the first implementation of Superfetch, and even with SP2 could be sluggish at relinquishing RAM to apps that called for it. Try disabling it (but keep Prefetch enabled) Is your graphics adapter adept at rendering Aero and transparency? You could try the Windows Basic theme. Do you have a lot of widgets loaded? Perhaps turn those off. There is a registry setting (I think it's EnablePrefetchParameters) that can allow you to disable Superfetch, but keep Prefetch enabled. I'm a bit tired right now, but I'm sure someone can chime in on that one.
  5. But at this point IE 11 is becoming useless. Twitter no longer works and YouTube will be not supported soon (I'm pretty sure of that anyway) I think that Edge will maintain support for somewhat longer, I hope.
  6. I don't THINK that they lock threads here so much. I know on a lot of places that necro-posting is frowned upon, but not so much here.
  7. I don't necessarily think it's unsafe, but I was finding that Vista was showing issues with modern browsers and some software working properly with Server 2008 updates after March 2018. However, the VistaEx/KernelEx add-ons may solve the compatibility issues.
  8. And then just days later ...... He goes to Windows 7 ..................... Bam Bam BAAAAAM (dramatic music and voice ....lol)
  9. Just reading this on Ghacks upcoming for Windows 10. Is anyone hearing rumblings of such updates for Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 in February? https://www.ghacks.net/2021/01/28/microsoft-releases-microcode-updates-for-windows-10-version-1809-and-newer/#comment-4484216
  10. I will likely use Windows 8 until the late spring 2024. During that time (between October 2023 until I pull the plug), I hope that Edge is at least supported, so that some sort of current browser is used. Beyond that, my tentative plan is to migrate to an iPad Pro and Bluetooth keyboard combination. Major strides are taking hold in order to make tablets (well iPads) more productive as a PC replacement. I hope that in three to four years from now, those strides will appreciate and make the iPad a suitable make shift workstation. As time goes by, there is less that I need a dedicated workstation for. If I wanted to, I have an older Windows XP x64 workstation that I could use (disconnected from the Internet of course) as an audio editing workstation. That was my old HP xw8200 PC. Time will tell.
  11. I have to admit - it's a tad weird talking about modern mobile platforms on MSFN. It was the opposite phenomenon I felt in the 1990s, being that I was the only guy still playing vinyl in a CD world. I prefer the simplicity of the LG e-mail app, and I would like to run it on my two Samsung tablets. The app (which i obtained from the APK sites) will install just fine, but is unable to start. I'm running a version that's correct fro the platform I'm on. I tried version 7x on my Oreo tablet, and versions 5x and 6x were both tried on this Nougat tablet. Does anyone know how to possibly make this happen? If you need any more info, just ask away 😁
  12. I use v1.3.5 and it's reliable. In fact it looks more like XP than the 1.4 beta. You may wait a LONG time for the RTM. There is also XP Explorer.
  13. There is Explorer++ that can be used on Vista/7/8 that will give you an "XP-esque" experience, including the "up" button.
  14. Security Only Quality Update is KB4598297. There are no other .NET of Flash updates. There is a special Secure Boot Update for preventing installation of a rootkit - KB4535680
  15. It's been some time since I've posted that. I now use Waterfox G3 quite happily.
  16. Just one lone update from Server 2012 to apply for December 2020: KB4592497 Still going strong with Windows 8.
  17. But the more compatible you make it, the more RAM it will take up. Websites, data sets and scripts are just too large to run in small amounts of RAM. I'm running Windows 8 with the old Vista mail client Windows Mail kludged in. Right now, it occupies 25.5 MB. Notepad, teensy weensy Notepad with a blank page takes 1 MB. What you want is something with the overhead of Windows 95, that yet can browse the modern web - WILL NOT HAPPEN
  18. In Windows 8, I just want to keep the integrated Flash engine (which I believe is ActiveX) for local offline use. I like to play Yeti Sports games. Hopefully that isn't time bombed.
  19. I had used Vista with an HP xw8200 workstation, running with 7 GB off DDR2 RAM, and two Xeon 3.68 GHz CPUs. The system had two 73 GB Fijitsu U320 SCSI disks at 10 K RPM.
  20. I have seen those topics for Vista and other OSs; that's what prompted me to ask for clarification. Well, here goes: I use an HP xw8600 PC (which looks like my old xw8200, but it's a tad beefier), and it contains Two Intel Xeon Core2 Quad 3.2 GHz Processors 16 GB DDR2 800 MHz Memory nVidia Quadro FX 3800 PCI-E Video Adapter Realtek HD Audio Adapter (Integrated) Two Seagate Cheetah 300 GB SAS Disks (15 K RPM) Two CPU Fans and a Larger Case Fan for cooling Two LSI 3000 SAS Adapters Samsung SyncMaster 213T 21" 4x3 Flat Screen (at 1600x1200 resolution) I have my system configured with Classic Shell to, not only provide a Start Menu, but to conceal the Metro Start Screen. For browsing, I use Waterfox G3.0.2 (based on Firefox ESR 78.6) I run Softmaker Office 2016 for productivity. Superfetch is disabled, but Prefetch isn't. I've integrated Windows Mail and Calendar from Vista to be used on Windows 8. In a few weeks, I'm replacing Windows Mail with Interlink Mail and News. I had used Vista x64 SP2 for two years between February 2014 to December 2015. I was going to migrate to Windows 8.1 after installing it and setting it up on a friend's PC. I initially hated Windows 8x because of the common excuses: Metro, flat looks, no Start Menu, yada yada. Except the more I configured his system, the more I really enjoyed using the desktop portion of Windows 8.1 It ran exceptionally smooth. So I decided to move to it. But on my xw8200, the netburst Xeon I was running could not boot Windows 8.1 x64. However, Windows 8 x64 DID boot, so I settled on that instead. I finally settled on a newer machine to run with it, and couldn't be happier. I use Server 2012 security patches to maintain the system with.
  21. Are you talking about hardware configuration? Use? Problems? What exactly are you wanting to hear about? Does it count if I use Windows 8, as opposed to 8.1?
  22. OK cool. Then I guess I should stick to the native release. I'm planning on running the Photonic theme to give a flat, up to date look, so you've answered my question
  23. I'm not. I'm running Windows Mail (originally pulled from Vista) on Windows 8. I'm replacing that once my mail is organized and backed up.
  24. How do you find it better DanR20? I'm moving to Interlink Mail and News in January. I would run Roytam1's version but there is no interest (last that I check) in making an x64 build yet, is there?
  25. I actually forgot that was indeed the original reason I chose Windows 8 x64. I was using an HP xw8200 system with Dual Xeon 3.68 GHz CPUs. They were the Netburst architecture.. At the time, it ran Windows 8 just peachy, but I went back to Vista on that system, before I decommissioned it.
