Event IDs 15 and 16 Happening Now and Then On Windows 8
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 8
No - I do not. The machine never reboots or anything like that. I only get it on every few reboots or logins (of my own doing - I mean) -
Well it hasn't affected me, so I'll just update again. Can I just install KB4517302? I was doing some experimentation with with the Disk Cleanup "sageset" commands, so my uninstaller might be already removed. I'll have to chack when I arrive home.

Event IDs 15 and 16 Happening Now and Then On Windows 8
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Windows 8
By the way - here's the link to the similar problem that someone else experienced. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/event-16-kernel-general/2c7ccff7-7b91-4e16-9d6c-8a16a83393b1 -
**** FULL DISCLOSURE **** (I also posted this on this DM Eight Forums) Refer to this link, which gives and indication of what I experience now and then in the Event Viewer. Only the first two events are what I get: Event 16, Kernel-General Now it's important to note that I have had no Event 18 show up in Event Viewer, nor have I had sudden reboots. In fact, everything runs fine and seems normal. The last time when this appeared was when I looged out of my workstation, and back in again within a few minutes. I did not restart my system. I only received the first two events for amcache.hve and the reorganization of NTUSER.DAT. Could there be any reason OTHER THAN a hardware failure, that causes this message to appear? Thanks for all of your help.

Yesterday's Security-Only Update (KB4512482) and the IE 10 update (KB4511872) are installed. No apparent performance impacts. :)

Latest Version of Software Running on XP
Jody Thornton replied to pointertovoid's topic in Windows XP
You should never feel you cannot say that (or even have to qualify it). A reality check is healthy. For example, I was very big on extending Vista's longevity, but it seems to be experiencing just enough issues or concerns with the latest Server 2008 updates, that it has now become a less attractive option for me. And with Windows 8 running SO well, I can feel good about letting go of past OS releases. I will miss Windows 2000 and Windows XP x64 Edition, but they had their time, and I was fond of it. -
@erpdude8 I am darned sure that at any given point, you only need to install the latest Flash update for Windows 8. That's all I do on a new installation.

While it makes sense, I never knew that was the case.

Like I did for Basilisk way back when - me thinks you're right

My Browser Builds (Part 1)
Jody Thornton replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Plus, I tired running the x64 build of InterLink on Windows 8. It threw an error (I'll have to go fetch it). Apparently, the x64 version requires the AVX instruction set. I'm sure that would cause problems on older x64 versions of XP on older hardware, no? -
Thanks Jaclaz. I'll look into that when I get home

I DON"T THINK it's related, but just keeping my wits about me ....lol I downloaded and unzipped the x64 version of Matty Tobin's InterLink Mail and News on my system. The x64 version gave an error saying: The application was unable to start correctly(0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application. Hmmmmm..... the x86 version runs. Now Matt says on his site that if your x64 processor lacks the AVX instruction set, that you'd get a similar error sating: The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000001d). Maybe it's the same thing, but I was concerned that one of the Windows Updates I applied might have been the culprit. Anyway, just putting it out there. If anyone thinks to chime in with anything relevant, by all means do so.

Or that there are only x86 builds of MailNews. Are there any x64 builds? -

How does this compare to Thunderbird? Is it like earlier 1x and 2x versions? Or even like SeaMonkey Mail? How is it different than Matt Tobin's Interlink application? -
OK - so we're all up to date (by my own set criteria anyway.) So far, the system is still running awesome. So a few things: I intentionally skipped the March 2018 Security-Only Update (KB4088880), since it houses mitigations for Spectre and Meltdown. I was concerned that skipping it MIGHT introduce performance issues because later updates required it to be present. So far, that has not happened. Now remember that I started updating the system with the July 2019 update first, and worked backwards to installing the final update from December 2017. Three updates were not installed: December 2018 (KB4471326), February 2018 (KB4074589) and January 2018 (KB4056899) all reported that they were not required for this system, and I'm guessing that these three updates were superseded by later ones. I shall keep you all posted, and I'm hopeful that I can just continue updating from here on in.

OK so, I'm about to do just what I described above (starting with the Security-Only Update from July 2019). Let's see what happens. If everything decreases performance-wise, I just have to remove today's updates.

Microsoft Edge Canary Builds For Windows 8
Jody Thornton replied to Jody Thornton's topic in Web Browsers
Rounded Tabs? Ewwwww! This is really becoming more like Chrome now. Unless there is a way to customize the browser tab placement, or the cache settings, I'll be sticking with Firefox. C'mon Microsoft! Show me what you can do! -

Yeppers! She works. You have to rename the SHA file name that downloads, but it works. -
I don't know why you'd say that. Quantum can still be customized MORE than Chrome. And rendering flow can be customized too. Quantum is a terrific browser.

I still am, but I'm taking the cue from @NoelCand holding off on updates. So right now, I have my Windows 8 installation updated to November 2017, and I have the IE 10 engine (the browser is removed), and the built in Flash updated to current. Come the new year, I will try installing all of the updates from 2018 and 2019, minus the Spectre/Meltdown month from Spring 2018. I will work backwards and install the December 2019 Security-Only update, and then November, and then October.... and so forth, until I get to the December 2017 update.. Some will likely not install because they have been since superseded by a newer update. Then I will run my system for a month, rigorously testing it out to see if there are any performance or operational issues. And before you ask, "Jody, why don't you just install the latest rollup?"; that's because I hear on good authority that more telemetry patches are worked into the rollups. Mind you, even though I don't like not installing updates, I have to say that my system performs splendidly as it is.

@Roytam I wouldn't think your New Moon v27 builds would be affected by this at all, no? https://www.ghacks.net/2019/07/11/pale-moons-archive-server-hacked-and-used-to-spread-malware/ -
