I tried to install R.Loews "NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD SIZE PATCH" (PTCHNVSZ.zip) for a GF7950GT 512MB. I got "cannot open source file" on prompt "PATCHNVC NVCORE.BAK NVCORE.VXD". What am I doing wrong or does anyone have an idea?

First test was OK - without blue screen. Swap file set to max 1000 on RamDrive.

I always remove the flash drive before shutting down. On start the flash drive messes up my partition order, so that my desktop partition shortcuts no longer work. I can't remember, if there where other start problems. The bootlog should be directly in partition C.

I've tried it and it works. My RAMDisk is a bit small with a size of 1.99GB FAT. I used a stored board P5B (up to 8 GB RAM) from the basement and put a 450 Conroe-L single core on it. Nero 8 is probably untested with (latest) KernelEx, so there is no workaround.

KernelEx 4.5.2: It is suitable for end users. It allows to run Firefox 3.6.28 or 9.0.1. For issues and solutions see KernelEx Wiki on WaybackMachine. The nss updates by RoyTam are also required for these Firefox versions. Javascript is too old for modern websites. It's usually better to turn it off to ensure stability. Little history: KernelEx 4.5.2016.16 was the first version with the possibility to start Firfox 24+ or a Firefox 24+ based browser (fork). Kex Update 18 brought improvements with regard to Firefox profile creation. As defuser already said, Roytam's browsers, based on Palemoon 28 or Firefox 52, generally display most sites fairly correctly. You should install latest KernelEx, but it's still in development and test phase - not really ready for end users.

Acer aspire 5630: how get some Windows 98\ME drivers?
schwups replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows 9x/ME
My black screen is apparently caused by old FritzDSL (2005) software in combination with a Geforce G71/72/73. -

Ok, you have set compatible mode in BIOS. 8GB RAM - then you can also test R Loew's RAMDSK32/64 or SweetLow's ramdrv4m. Is DMA enabled in DeviceManager/DiskDrives/Drive Properties/Settings? 2TB HDD: Make sure, that RLoew's HIGH CAPACITY DISK PATCH and TERABYTE PLUS PACKAGE is included (in Patchmem CAB files?) to avoid data loss. -
Yes, I still have it, but I hardly use it. (Java 1.8.0.292 (Azul Zulu 8.54.0.21)) I just tried jdownloader-portable-17334 2024-05-24. I think it's still running fine. Good to know.

I'm surprised. Well then, congratulations. Can you give us a picture of your DeviceManager/HardDiskControllers. In case that something goes wrong you also have the possibility to reset the registry with scanreg.exe. Boot DOS - at Prompt (F5) change direction from A: to C: Type: C:\windows\Command\scanreg /restore. Select the previous registry you want to restore. Yes, you should backup 98 to be on the safe side. -
The question arises whether it is theoretically possible to add (hardcode) such a security update into KernelEx.

Primary and secondary IDE controllers conflicting

First of all, there is probably no guarantee that everything will work the way you want. I don't use the AHCI or SATA patch anywhere. I tried to install the SATA Patch once, but without success. Other members can help you better here. I did a lot of things simply by trial and error. Without SATA Patch: Normally, "Compatible Mode" also means, that only two SATA slots are enabled. These slots often differ from those in the instructions. So you must try it out. WinME/98 can't handle all three controllers, SATA,PATA (Marvell IDE) and Marvell SATA by default (without SATA Patch). So you have to give up one or two of it. After a failed driver installation, it is recommended to delete the SATA/PATA devices (bad configuration) in the registry (e.g. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF) or from the device manager in SafeMode F8. Or there is the possibility to reset the complete registry. I've always enabled "PCI IDE Busmaster". -

The problem has been discussed here many times. You will definitely get information here https://msfn.org/board/topic/97588-modern-motherboards-which-are-working-with-windows-98-discussion/. Of course there are more matching topics on this board. Search in the bios for SATA and IDE settings - something like "compatible mode". And maybe you can disable one SATA controller (4 port or 2 port). It should reduce the Controllers. Or you can try R. Loew's SATA Patch. How many and which devices do you want to use (Pata or/ and Sata)? -
Yes, here it hangs on folder details request. I did a few tests, without a result. The look of the download page has changed. It's a new problem on ME/98, because it worked until recently. Maybe it has something to do with API "RaiseException" somehow or indirectly. Anyway, I have no idea at the moment.

K-Meleon 1.5.4 is from 2010. Javascript and css haven't been updated. So it isn't surprising that most pages are displayed very poorly. RoyTam1 has updated the nss (Network Security Services) files. With TLS 1.2/1.3 support the pages are accessible, but as I said they are poorly displayed. Otherwise the only options are a newer operating system or latest KernelEx (But it's still in development and test phase - not really ready for end users). You will not be successful with an "e-mail login" in such old browser like KM 1.5.4. eMail program: I can still use OutlookExpress6 with the help of WinSSL (TLS 1.2 support). This should also work with Thunderbird 2.0.0.24. https://msfn.org/board/topic/174247-windows-9x-ssl-protocol-winsslwrap-117-rev-08/ Antivirus: Yes, ClamWin is probably the last one with the possibility to get latest definitions. Spybot 1.6.2 (adware, Spyware, trojans) has still definitions updates, too.

I think the driver 82.69 isn't 100% compatible with G71 / G72 chips. Maybe you can find something about GF 7300 here on Msfn board 9x/ME, if you search. I've a 7900GS (G71) and yes there is a black screen on ME start for a second that doesn't really bother me. This doesn't happen with the G70. -

The KernelEx Wiki is no longer accessible since the php update last year. I don't know, if the admin will fix the code one day in the future. As a reminder, the Wiki is available on archive.org up to July last year. If you miss specific pages or information, I can probably provide the text upon request here. https://web.archive.org/web/20230710195349/https://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page https://web.archive.org/web/20230506001046/https://kernelex.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/index.php?title=Category:Compatible_applications&redirect=no

Jumper described the problem. I was stuck with testing in October and couldn't get any further. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181424-firefox-24-52-for-me-and-98/?do=findComment&comment=1252539 https://msfn.org/board/topic/181424-firefox-24-52-for-me-and-98/?do=findComment&comment=1254003

I am not aware, that versions 12-23 work usable at all with KernelEx. Those are freezing after a few seconds. With later versions, it depends on the hardware (i.e. CPU) whether Firefox is slow. With a Intel Prescott it runs noticeably slower than with a Core2Duo Wolfsdale. With the last mentioned it does not run slower than on XP or maybe minimally. There is no need to measure the loading times for comparison. That's not worth it. Yes I've XP, Vista and Win7, too.
