  1. Are you sure about that? Or is it the other way around? With 95/98(se)/ME and SMARTDISK not activated your installation is slower; it´s not using the free RAM. But for XP I never saw a message asking me to enable S.M.A.R.T.
  2. I don´t defrag, now I know that there is some thing wrong with me B)
  3. S.M.A.R.T. - Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology But I never saw that Windows XP installs it self slower when it´s not enabled. You can enable it in your computer BIOS .
  4. When you buy a second one let Windows put his Swap-file on the second drive, if you keep it in one partition it will be faster because of bigger blocks. Make it also a fixed Swap-file, then start moving games and multimedia stuff like music, movies etc. You will notice some performance boost .
  5. Then I try to gues; All is set to AUTO isn´t it? Could be that it´s not accepting the DIMMs or the CPU well, try to set the slowest settings first in the BIOS. If you did that, come back here and tell us your specs and if it works now .
  6. Yeah, those K7 1333 and 1400 are the hottest CPUs ever made by AMD. I´m glad that you are happy with it, also that 12cm fan is doing a lot .
  7. Tweaking is always fun . A OCed CPU will defenly win from a non OCed CPU in this case but I didn’t see that angel0104 would like to over clock his system, especially when I see his second post asking if it would be good to switch to a 3GHz P4 .
  8. Then you have to order 3 . So, it isn’t bad PCB... look at the capacitors and see if you can see any thing strange... Did you change the power supplies? It’s the only thing I could think of. Do you use voltage regulators to stabilize power from the power grid? Swap the motherboard with one of a good system to see if it’s the motherboard (or you already did?)
  9. An UPS can also be used to stabilize voltage It could be that you used a too small power supply but still, CPU´s are not taking up more then 85Watts . If you buy a new one now then go for an Antec. What brand did you use before? ps. Did you ground your PC well?
  10. Looks like you have to order a new motherboard . It could be lots of things, for example defect SMD components, defect PCB (broken lines) or most likely some defect capacitors... Don’t start to ask me how things get defect, they just do, nothing is for ever .
  11. Good choice, only I don’t like the thin doors, although I must say that the doors here in my cybercafé still didn’t break after 16 months of use while customers are opening them a lot to use floppy and DVD (Yes, they still live 20 years back here ). The cases I use are the LanBoy I, also from Antec B) with Enermax power supplies (had to use other ones then the original ones, because I imported them from Holland and those ones are only made for 230V .)
  12. What I did before was using double sided tape to tape it on the front of my housing and use the internal connector to connect it. So, that way I realy had wireless . ps, don´t put it iun a metal box, your signal will go bad, just tape it on the front, for example on drive bay fronts that are not used .
  13. The first Sempron CPUs are for socket A, later based on the AMD 64 cpu sockets... okay, to confirm that, it´s model 8 that fit socket A http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Techni...9_11683,00.html Look here: http://www.lejabeach.com/ECS/ez.html To bad, there is no info if a Sempron is supported. But, like other people are telling you, go for a good motherboard this time, go for ASUS or ABIT for example .
  14. Same here in Mexico, but that´s bc they are "new" ( wow! ) 3rd or 2nd world sux when it comes to new and good hardware . @ Ripken, Let me find some info, but your not right when you are saying that there are more AGP cards out then PCI-E when it comes to the last generations... be right back on that.... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-130-222&depa=1 Why not this one? Okay, the prices are higher for the 6800 cards bc they are designed for AGP 8x. This is cool in SLI: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-127-147&depa=1 The 6600 is designed for PCI-E, those ones are cheaper then the AGP8x cards.
  15. Aargg, no way . Got some cash to mutch? Why you want to upgrade? Do you play games?
  16. 40 to 70 bucks? That´s a lot for a power suplly of an old computer . Why not buy the cheapest one of enermax or so, they are like 35 US$.
  17. I have both nVidia and ATI cards here, they work both 100% with ALL games. BUT, you are right when you say that not all ATI cards are supported well, but they are not talking about the new generations e.g. 9xxx series. Transparently for example is not supported on 7xxx and 8xxx series in NFSU2. Still I have to see what a ATI 9600pro can´t and a nVidia 9700SE can
  18. I would not upgrade from a 32bit 3200+ to a 64bit 2800+ CPU, you will not gain much performance. ASRock isn´t bad, it´s the low budget line from ASUS and just makes basic boards .
  19. Nicely said, but don´t b.itch-slap him to hard please . My 2 cents: "hard drive Maxtor 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model 6B250S0, OEM Drive Only 156 zipzoomfly" Euhmm, why not 2* 120GB or 160GB ATA 100 drives and put them in RAID? "video card XFX nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card 419 zipzoomfly" Nice, but for that price you can almost buy 2* 6600 cards in SLI . The XFX cards are one of the worst cards you can find, I know that they are 10% cheaper but still. Go for a ASUS or so... EDIT: WHAT? PCI-E is more expensive then a AGP card? What the ... AGP sould be mor expensive because of the PCI-E to AGP bridge chip... Are you sure?
  20. And at this link too: http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=245
  21. So, what mobo is it? So we can check were to put those 4 (or 5) pins So, there are any connectors that look like this? 0 0 - +VCC 0 0 - -D 0 0 - +D 0 0 - Ground 0 . - Ground
  22. I see you talking about a "$199 - GeCube ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB"? Why not go for a 6600GT and you´re ready . http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/47338/V...8X_HDTV_DVI.asp Edit: Crap, taht one it out of your budget I think... New (cheap) graphics card? Try to look for a 128MB 9600Pro or a 128MB 9550 (the 128bit version, so no LE / SE or other crap (PRO is always good )) http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/42403/V...MB_TV_DVI-I.asp http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/38767/V..._TV-Out_DVI.asp http://www.pcbudget.com.au/ClientSide/Prod...iCategoryID=112 To bad this card isn´t AGP http://www.pcbudget.com.au/ClientSide/Prod...iCategoryID=112
  23. The 6800 is more expensive then a 6600GT .
  24. It will not work, that card is a GF FX 5200 with TV in / out and a remote control. They are mostly used for home entertainment systems . Also watch out! They don´t run on every system (no post, black screen). I have 3 of them here, they are one of the best 5200 cards if the system can work with them. I would have bought the 6600GT with a Hauppage TV card. Together like 275 US$ I think. Try to change the 5700LE if you can... I know it´s a bit late, but any way .
  25. LOL, Okay, listen; do you know why the put slower RAM on a 256MB card? It’s to keep the price down. To tell you the truth, it’s just a hyped marketing trick to get those cards sold. The 128MB card will perform better in most cases then the 256MB version with slower clock speeds. If you over clock them you will get about 800MHz out of the 128MB version and 700-733 out of the 256MB version. So, please don’t throw away your money and get a 128MB version. Tip: Also look at the 6600GT, that one is almost as fast as the 6800, although I have 6800 cards too and enabled all pipelines with Riva tuner... check it out!
